The Helix Midnight Luxe is a favorite at Mattress Clarity, an oft-recommended luxury hybrid that provides plenty of cushioning, comfort, and support. It scored 4s and above across the board in our testing, and I awarded its highest ratings in edge support (4.8/5) and cooling (4.5/5). I also gave it a 5/5 score on our adjustable base test; the bed only showed minor gapping at the center, which is fairly typical and no cause for concern. If I had the room for it, Iโd consider getting this mattress-and-base combo myself!
I rated this Helix mattress at 6/10 on our firmness scale, which is just a touch softer than medium-firm. I most enjoyed the mattress on my side and back, finding the pillow top to be contoured to my hips, shoulders, and lower back, providing nice cushioning comfort.
My favorite part about this mattress is that it fills in your lower back. The quilted top is plush, but the coils underneath offer great support for my back. I do like this mattress for back sleeping, but I am typically a side and stomach sleeper. I can see this working for combination sleepers of the average weight category.

You like a super-bouncy hybrid with no sinkage. As a rowdy combination sleeper, I didnโt find the Helix Midnight Luxe as bouncy as Iโd have liked. The thick pillow top effectively canceled out the springs below, and I noticed it was more difficult to roll over from my stomach onto my back or side.
Budget shoppers. Since itโs a luxury mattress, you can expect to pay upwards of $1,500 for a queen-size Helix Midnight Luxe. While worth every penny, it may be a bit hard to justify for folks after a cheaper bed.

It has that typical memory-foam sink despite the coils underneath providing good lift, earning a 4/5 rating for pressure relief overall. Our testers came to a consensus that back sleeping was the most comfortable on this bed, including yours truly.
The foams on top really conform to my body, filling in the gap near my lower back and relieving pressure where my shoulders and lower half really start to sink into the bed. I think the coils are doing their work better on my back than on my side. However, it may be a bit too soft for some, especially if you weigh a bit more.

Light sleepers. The Nectar Classic Hybrid absorbs motion extremely well for a hybrid; as a light sleeper, I wasnโt jostled by any of my fellow testersโ movements on the other side of the bed.
Folks who want a cool bed with a memory foam feel. Hybrid beds are typically breathable because they have coils that allow for airflow, but I thought the dense foam on top would trap more heat than the coils could offset. However, the bed is swaddled in a cooling cover that has a slightly cool-to-the-touch feel.
Combination sleepers. I was able to move around on the surface of the mattress with more ease than on a traditional foam bed. Still, Iโll note that the cushy pillow top had a doughier feel that required some extra effort to navigate.

The Saatva Zenhaven is one such bed, a latex mattress that performed well in terms of pressure relief (earning 4.5/5) and in our adjustable base test. My colleague Kenny Timper also quite enjoyed the mattress when lying on his side, calling it โsoft and comfortableโ in this position.
He further noted that the latex โbends and flopsโ when you maneuver the mattress on an adjustable base, and itโs this malleability that also makes it a great mattress for side sleepers. Although it doesnโt contour to your body like memory foam, it brings plenty of cushioning and allows your hips and shoulders to sink in just right.

Didnโt see what you were looking for? Here are some other beds that we often recommend that didnโt make the cut. These are solid beds, but they just missed the cut by requiring some extra finagling to get them to bend and stick to an adjustable frame. Theyโre all plenty comfortable and supportive.
WinkBed โ The WinkBed mattress offers three firmness options (Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer) to provide a comfortable and supportive mattress for sleepers of almost all body types and sleep positions. Its pillow top provides cushioning while its durable coil unit brings lift to keep your spine aligned. However, though itโs marketed as adjustable-base compatible, we noticed it didnโt perform as well as weโd liked in our studio; there was a noticeable gap between us and the floor.
Nectar Classic Memory Foamโ This memory foam mattress provides ample cushioning and a firm, yet slow-moving feel that strikes a nice balance for most sleepers. But I put this mattress on an adjustable base and found it really didnโt want to smush down. How We Tested the Mattresses for Adjustable Beds
A mattress for an adjustable base should work seamlessly with the base, providing the necessary support and comfort for the sleeper. Hereโs how we gauged each category in our testing and decided which beds would make our final list.
Adjustable Base Compatibility
For a mattress to work effectively with an adjustable base, it must fit snugly on the frame and move smoothly with it, without slipping off. Some beds that have trouble conforming with the shape of the base may leave gaps between the bed and the base. To see if this is an issue with a mattress, weโll try it out on an adjustable base while weโre testing it in our studio.
We cycle through some common positions, raising the head and foot of the bed independently to contort the bed into every possible configuration a sleeper might want. Two testers will get on top of the mattress to get the best results, as the more weight is on a bed, the better it will fit the base. We focus on the most common: zero gravity (which involves slightly adjusting the head and feet to achieve less pressure on the spine) and TV-watching (sitting up straight, as if to read or watch television). If the bed performs well in these categories, we consider it adjustable-base compatible.
Support
While a mattress for an adjustable bed should be flexible enough to bend, it should also be sturdy enough to support whoever sleeps on it. A supportive mattress will keep the spine aligned and oriented in its proper position, following the natural S-curve. Many mattresses even come with something called zoned support, which means the bed feels firmer in the center to keep the hips elevated to create that curve.
We judge support by lying down on the bed in each sleeping position: back, side, and stomach. If we feel like everything is in line, nothing is feeling too elevated or dipping too far, we would consider a bed to have great support.
Under the umbrella of support is edge support, which refers to how well the mattressโs perimeter holds up when bearing weight. We test a bedโs edge support by sitting and lying down along the edgeโas well as stacking weighted plates to mimic different body types doing the same.
Robust perimeter support means you can spread out without feeling unstable on the bedโs surface. You can also bear down on the edges to assist with transferring in and out of bed. We even consider strong edge support a marker of durability, which Iโll dive deeper into below.

A mattress may do poorly in edge support if itโs softer, made entirely of foam, or has easily compressed upper layers (like the Nectar Classic Hybrid). However, this doesnโt mean itโs a low-quality bed by any means.
Also important to consider alongside support is pressure relief. โPressure points occur when parts of your body dig into the mattress, such as areas like your shoulders, hips, or other sensitive joints,โ explains Dr. Raj Dasgupta. A mattress with good pressure relief will cradle these areas to ensure pressure doesnโt build up, which can cause discomfort or even pain. โThis is usually achieved through the use of softer, cushioning memory foam or latex,โ Dr. Dasgupta adds.
We test a bedโs pressure-relieving ability using a specialized mat. This mat is rolled out over the surface of the bed before a tester hops in. The mat records where pressure builds up along their body, creating a color-coded map to show areas of high and low pressure.
We generally want to see more low pressure, as this means less strain on the testerโs body. We try to ensure a tester of each weight category gets on the bed on both their back and side to get a feel for how pressure will be relieved for a variety of sleepers in each position. Based on the results of the pressure map and feedback from our testers, we rate a bedโs ability to relieve pressure out of 5.

Certain mattress types fare better on adjustable bases than others. Iโll go over the most common types and how well theyโll work for an adjustable bed.

Foam
Memory foam mattresses are a great match for adjustable bases because they are so flexible. Without coils, they stay flush against the adjustable base as you raise and lower it. Just make sure that your memory foam mattress features durable, high-density foam. Low-quality memory foam mattresses might start to lose their shape if you use an adjustable base.
Foam mattresses are also great for motion isolation and cushioning because of their dense, slow-moving nature. Theyโre also less expensive than other mattress types. They may not be the bounciest, though, and some traditional foam beds are notorious for trapping heat.
Innerspring
Innerspring mattresses are made of a continuous coil unit and a very thin comfort layer on top. These coils are all interconnected, making the mattress less flexible. Therefore, they arenโt the best for adjustable bases. That being said, some innerspring mattresses are compatible with adjustable bases. Just do your research before buying.
Innerspring beds are best for folks who want support above all. They tend to be super bouncy and on the firmer side. Theyโre not great if you want cradling, cushioning, or to sink deeply into your mattress surface.
Hybrid
Hybrid mattresses can also work well with adjustable bases, but pay attention to what type of coils are in the mattress. Most hybrid mattresses feature pocketed coils that are flexible and work with adjustable beds.
Hybrid beds are some of the most varied, since their comfort layers can be made up of just about anything. This makes them a versatile mattress type if youโre looking for something super specific.
