I have personally reviewed almost all of the best bed-in-a-box mattresses and narrowed down to the top eight that impressed me quite a bit. These mattresses really differ in terms of price, design, and feel, so there should be something for most bed-in-a-box shoppers – to find the absolute best mattress in a box, read on for our full buying guide!

The Best Bed-in-a-Box Mattresses

  • Best Firm Bed in a Box – Layla
  • Best Bed in a Box for Combination Sleepers – Casper
  • Best Bed in a Box for Side Sleepers – Nolah
  • Best Foam Bed in a Box Mattress – Leesa
  • Best Customizable Mattress – Helix
  • Best Hybrid Bed in a Box Mattress – Bear Hybrid
  • Best Value Bed in a Box – Allswell
  • Best Memory Foam Mattress – Amerisleep

I cannot recommend one best bed in a box mattress for everyone, but one of these eight should be a good fit for most types of sleepers:

Best Firm Bed in a Box Mattress

The Layla is one of the most popular bed in a box mattresses and for good reason – it features a very innovative flippable design. Now, most old school innerspring mattresses are flippable, but this is different because the Layla is a memory foam mattress, and each side has a different firmness. It is always a gamble finding the exact right firmness with a bed in a box mattress, and this takes out some of the guesswork.

The soft side of the Layla mattress is softer-than-average and features a thick layer of copper-infused memory foam – this side of the mattress relieves pressure extremely well and is a great match for side sleeping and, at the same time, it could be supportive enough for many back sleepers. Stomach sleepers and those who need something firmer and more supportive can simply flip the mattress over!

While this is a memory foam mattress, it should not trap a significant amount of heat, a major issue with many memory foam mattresses. The Layla features copper in its memory foam which will draw heat away from the body, and the Thermogel in the cover will also help dissipate body heat.

Finally, the Layla is simply one of the most comfortable bed in a box mattresses I have ever slept on!

What Makes The Layla Stand Out?

  • The Layla is a flippable mattress that offers two firmness options in one.
  • The soft side is extremely comfortable and a particularly good match for side sleepers and some back sleepers.
  • The firm side of the Layla should be a good fit for both back sleeping and stomach sleeping.
  • The Layla’s copper-infused memory foam is anti-microbial and cooling, making this a clean option for hot sleepers.

Best For Combination Sleepers

The Casper is another innovative mattress but for a different reason; it features a proprietary Zoned Support system that should be a fantastic match for all three sleeping positions. Basically, the center of the mattress is firmer than the head and foot, and this design makes the mattress feel firmer and more supportive when people are back sleeping and stomach sleeping and softer and more comfortable when they are side sleeping.

The Casper also boasts a fantastic balanced foam feel; it mixes the slow-moving feel of memory foam but also the quick response of latex. This means that sleepers will sink into the Casper mattress a fair amount, but they should not feel stuck, and it should be easy to switch positions at night.

The mattress also features open-celled foams so that it won’t trap a great amount of heat, and the majority of people should be sleeping cool on the Casper mattress. Hot sleepers and combination sleepers who need comfort and support for multiple positions should definitely check out the Casper.

What Makes The Casper Stand Out?

  • The Casper features a proprietary zoned construction that varies the firmness across the mattress.
  • The Casper should be an exceptional match for all three sleeping positions.
  • The mattress should be a good fit for sleepers who don’t want to overheat during the night.

Best Bed in a Box for Side Sleepers

The Nolah is an all-foam mattress that features an interesting alternative to memory foam called AirFoam – it is designed to relieve pressure even better than soft memory foam. This is a bold claim, so I put the Nolah through our pressure map test, and I saw barely any pressure on my shoulders and hips!

These pressure map results and the comfortable feel of the Nolah let me know that the mattress should be an excellent choice for many side sleepers, specifically those who are light- and medium-weight. I weigh 160 lbs, and I personally get all the pressure relief I need on my shoulders and hips, but someone who is much larger might press through the AirFoam layer and experience more pressure in those areas – these heavier sleepers might want to consider the thicker Nolah 12″ mattress.

The AirFoam is also more cooling and responsive than standard memory foam. The AirFoam is designed to dissipate heat and it will also make it easier to move around on the Nolah mattress.

What Makes The Nolah Stand Out?

  • The Nolah mattress is a particularly good match for lightweight and medium-weight side sleepers.
  • The AirFoam is responsive so sleepers should not be getting stuck when they change positions on the Nolah at night.
  • The AirFoam is quite breathable and shouldn’t trap heat the way memory foam is often known to do.

Best Foam Mattress

There’s a lot to love about foam mattresses – they can be extremely comfortable and they are often more affordable than hybrid and innerspring mattresses – at the same time, foam mattresses can cause people to feel stuck and sometimes overheat.

Those who want the benefits of a foam mattress with few of the drawbacks are going to love the Leesa mattress. It is an all-foam mattress that features memory foam as well as a proprietary LSA200 foam; it is cooler than memory foam, and it is also much more responsive, making it easy to switch positions on the mattress.

At the same time, the Leesa features many of the common benefits of an all-foam mattress; it is very comfortable and provides excellent pressure relief and it is also under $1000 for a Queen-size mattress. In addition, back sleepers should also find the Leesa to be a fantastic match.

What Makes The Leesa Stand Out?

  • The Leesa mattress offers the benefits of a foam mattress with almost none of the drawbacks such as getting stuck.
  • The Leesa mattress features a proprietary LSA200 foam which is both comfortable and responsive, making it easy to move around on the mattress.
  • The mattress should be both a fantastic option for both back sleepers and side sleepers.
  • The Leesa should sleep particularly cool for a foam mattress, so it should be an excellent fit for hot sleepers.

Best Customizable Mattress

Just looking at all of the bed in a box mattresses out there, many customers could feel overwhelmed and confused, so those who just don’t know what they want should consider the Helix mattresses. They take the guesswork out of the mattress buying process and make it very easy for shoppers to find the perfect mattress for them.

With Helix, customers can select from one of the company’s numerous bed in a box mattresses; these range in terms of firmness, feel, and sleep temperature. They have soft mattresses built for side sleepers, mattresses for stomach sleepers, and even a mattress made just for larger people, the Helix Plus.

Helix goes one step further in helping people find the ideal mattress – they offer a sleep quiz that will allow the company to recommend the right mattress. Shoppers will answer questions regarding their weight, sleeping position, and firmness preferences, and then Helix will use that data to select the correct mattress for that customer.

The Helix mattresses are great for couples because each side of the mattress can be customized; the mattress will be split down the middle so each partner can get the firmness and feel they require on their side of the mattress. What’s more, shoppers who want to splurge on luxury can opt for one Helix’s Luxe upgrades which adds more quality components and cooling features to the mattress.

What Makes The Helix Stand Out?

  • Helix offers many mattress models, so all types of sleepers should be able to find what they need.
  • The company’s “sleep quiz” takes all the confusion out of online mattress shopping and makes it easy to choose the ideal mattress.
  • These mattresses are an excellent choice for couples because each side can be customized.

Best Hybrid Bed in a Box

Bear Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses are a great option for those who want a balance of comfort and support and, out of the numerous bed in a box hybrids I have reviewed, the Bear Hybrid really stands out. It features supportive coils and then a premium comfort foam atop that, and the Bear Hybrid offers some of the best balance of comfort and support I have ever felt on a bed in a box mattress.

This balance is really ideal for back sleepers, and they should feel their hips sinking into the comfort foam just the right amount while the coils hold up their body. Even heavier back sleepers should feel excellent support when lying on the Bear Hybrid.

At the same time, the Bear Hybrid should offer fantastic pressure relief for side sleepers of many sizes because the comfort foam performed quite well on our pressure map test, and I saw almost no pressure on my shoulders and hips. Science aside, it was just extremely comfortable!

What Makes The Bear Hybrid Stand Out?

  • The Bear Hybrid mattress offers an excellent balance of comfort and support.
  • The Bear Hybrid is a medium-firm mattress that should be a great fit for back sleeping.
  • Side sleepers should get fantastic pressure relief on this mattress.
  • The mattress features a cooling Celliant cover and airflow-promoting coils; the Bear Hybrid should not be sleeping hot.

Best Value Mattress

One of the main reasons people shop for a bed in a box mattress is because they want to avoid the exorbitant prices and upselling of the mattress store. While all of these mattresses are a good value, the Allswell mattress is a great pick for those who want something extremely affordable. The Allswell is currently priced at under $350 for a Queen size; it comes from Walmart so, with its thinner profit margins, the company is able to price the mattress significantly lower than competitors.

This isn’t some cheap bed in a box mattress, however – it is a high-quality hybrid mattress that features some very high-quality materials. In its support layer, the Allswell sports individually-wrapped coils that should be able to handle even much heavier weights and, in its comfort layer, the mattress features comfortable, open-celled memory foam.

This design and materials make this one of the firmest mattresses on this list; it should be a great match for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who require extra support. Larger sleepers who need a firmer mattress should also take a look at the value Allswell mattress.

What Makes The Allswell Stand Out?

  • The Allswell is a very affordable bed in a box mattress that also features a high-quality design and materials.
  • The mattress is firmer-than-average and an excellent fit for back sleepers and stomach sleepers.
  • The Allswell is a very breathable mattress and should be a cooling option for hot sleepers.

Best Memory Foam Bed in a Box

Choosing a mattress with the right firmness is so important – it can mean the difference between a great night of sleep and one filled with tossing and turning. Amerisleep gives customers five firmness options to choose from, making it easy to sleep comfortably through the night.

The Amerisleep mattresses range from the AS1, their firmest model, all the way to the AS5, their softest model. I am personally an enormous fan of the Amerisleep AS4 because it is such a comfortable option for side sleepers; it really lets me sink in and just melts that pressure away.

While many memory foam mattresses can sleep hot, that should not be an issue with the Amerisleep mattresses. They feature bio-based memory foams that are more breathable than standard memory foam and a Celliant cover which can also help with heat dissipation. What’s more, the Celliant cover can also improve blood flow and speed up muscle recovery!

What Makes Amerisleep Stand Out?

  • Amerisleep offers five memory foam models and hybrid models with varying firmnesses.
  • Fans of the slow-moving feel of memory foam will love any one of the Amerisleep mattresses.
  • The Amerisleep mattresses should work for hot sleepers who still want memory foam.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 250 lbs

Shopping for a bed in a box mattress, it is important to take one’s size and weight into account – because I am 5’9” and 160 lbs, I wanted to get the perspective of a heavier sleeper. So, I asked Marten, who weighs 250 lbs, to try out these five mattresses and talk about his experience with them.

Out of these eight bed in a box mattresses, five are an excellent match for larger sleepers like myself. First off, the Casper is a great match for both back and side sleeping; the proprietary Zoned Support supports my lumbar area when I am back sleeping and relieves the majority of pressure on my shoulders when I am side sleeping.

The Layla mattress is awesome because of its flippable design; the soft side is soft and pressure-relieving for side sleeping, and the firm side is supportive enough for me while I am back sleeping.

The Bear Hybrid mattress is great because of its supportive coils, and support is something larger people should be focusing on. The mattress also has a nice balance of comfort and support because of that premium foam layer on top, so I feel great when I am back sleeping, and I am also getting just enough pressure relief when I am side sleeping.

I really love the Amerisleep AS4 mattress for side sleeping because its comfort layer is particularly thick – I sink into the mattress without bottoming out, and I am feeling fantastic pressure relief on my shoulders and hips.

Finally, Helix is great because they offer a mattress made just for larger people – the Helix Plus is very supportive and also features premium foam on top for some nice comfort. See our list of the best mattresses for heavy people for more like the Helix Plus.

What is a Bed in a Box Mattress?

A bed in a box is exactly what it sounds like: a mattress that comes delivered in a box. In recent years, bed in a box mattresses have become more popular in the mattress industry. Instead of going into a retail storefront and sampling a limited selection of beds, you can now shop for your mattress completely online and have it delivered to your front door. The Internet truly is one of the best places to buy a mattress.

Bed in a box mattresses are compressed and rolled up into a smaller and more convenient box. Once you receive your bed in a box mattress, you simply cut the plastic, unroll the mattress, and watch it fully expand.

Roll packing the mattress doesn’t cause any damage to the bed. These bed in a box mattresses are highly resilient! Within 48-72 hours, your mattress should be fully expanded.

Who is a Bed in a Box Mattress Good For?

Bed in a box mattresses pose many benefits, making them a great choice for many types of people including:

  • Budget shoppers. Shopping online and purchasing a direct to consumer (DTC) mattress cuts the cost of the middleman. Plus, you can find coupons and promo codes.
  • Comparison shoppers. Online, you can compare an unlimited number of options from various brands and retailers.
  • Convenience shoppers. College students, people who are moving, seniors, and more looking for a convenient shopping experience can benefit from buying a mattress online and having it delivered to your door.
  • People with specific preferences. Shopping online makes it easy to narrow your options and find something that fits your particular set of needs. Whether you’re looking for pain relief, cooling, a certain firmness level, or advanced technology, you can find what you need in a bed in a box mattress.

Some people may be hesitant to purchase a mattress online without sampling it in a store. In fact, online mattress companies are aware of this and have policies in place to work around it.

Many online mattress companies offer generous sleep trial periods around 100 days. In this time, if you find the mattress isn’t for you, you can typically return it for a full refund (most companies even send representatives to come remove the mattress for you). With a trial period, you get a much better sense of if a mattress is right for you than you do by testing a mattress for a few minutes in a store.

Additionally, many online mattresses come with at least 10 year warranties to cover any potential manufacturing defects so you can feel protected with your purchase.

How To Find The Best Mattress In A Box

When looking for a bed in a box mattress on Amazon or elsewhere, there are some things to think about before hitting the “Place Order” button – shoppers can’t usually test a bed in a box mattress before ordering, so it is important to consider the following:

  • Firmness and sleeping position. As I stated above, firmness should pretty much be the first thing that mattress shoppers think when they begin to look for mattresses in a box. Some people might just like a firmer mattress or a softer mattress but, most of the time, it depends on their sleeping position – side sleepers are usually going to want to find a soft mattress, back sleepers should be looking for a medium-firm mattress, and those who need the best mattress for stomach sleepers should get something on the firmer end of the spectrum to properly support their hips.
  • Feel and materials. This really comes down to personal preference, but shoppers should think about what feel is best for them – if they like something soft and slow-moving, a mattress with memory foam in the comfort layer should be the best choice but, on the other hand, if someone wants a mattress with more bounce, they should consider a latex mattress and/or something with coils.
  • Sleep temperature. Sleeping hot is no fun, so it is an exceptional idea to find a mattress with cooling features or materials – in general, innerspring and hybrid mattresses are better for hot sleepers because the coils allow for air to flow through the mattress, and latex is also a naturally breathable material. While memory foam can trap heat, many companies infuse their memory foam with gel, graphite, or another cooling material like copper or include features like Phase Change Material and Celliant covers.
  • A partner’s preferences. If someone sleeps with a partner, motion transfer can be a big issue – this happens when one partner repositions, and that movement travels across the mattress and disturbs the other partner. Memory foam is usually the best at cutting down on motion transfer, but keep in mind that it isn’t always the best with cooling. In the end, finding a mattress for couples may mean each partner has to compromise on firmness and feel.
  • Trial periods and warranties. Again, it is impossible to try out many mattresses in a box before purchasing, so it’s an excellent idea to choose a mattress with a longer trial period. Some mattresses come with a year-long trial, so owners can have a significant amount of time to decide whether the mattress is really working for them, and many come with a longer warranty in case there are any defects or other issues.

How to Buy a Bed in a Box Mattress

Buying a mattress online is simple! Here are the most important steps:

  1. Research. Start by learning about the different types of bed in a box mattresses (i.e. memory foam, hybrid, latex, innerspring), special features to look out for (i.e. cooling gel, copper-infused foam, pocket coils), and understanding some of the top brands (i.e. Casper, Nectar, Saatva, Tuft & Needle, Brooklyn Bedding).
  2. Narrow your options. Figure out what’s best for your needs and preferences. Take mattress quizzes, read guides, and learn what will be best for you.
  3. Read reviews. >Compare user reviews and expert reviews from places like to confirm which mattress will be best.
  4. Find coupons and promo codes. Since you’re shopping online, take advantage of coupons, promotional codes, and holiday sales to save a couple hundred bucks.
  5. Buy the mattress. Once you’re confident in your purchase, just buy the mattress and it will show up at your door within 5-7 business days typically.

Voila! Once your mattress arrives, all you have to do is unbox it by cutting through the plastic layers and unrolling it. Don’t forget to support your mattress with great bedding like a mattress foundation, sheets, pillows, and more!
