How We Picked the Best Sateen Sheets
Sateen is a weave, referring to how tightly the threads in a certain fabric are woven. Therefore, sateen sheets can be made from different materials, although cotton and bamboo are most common. The sheets on this list are made from either.
Our team evaluates the quality and durability of a sheet’s construction in their testing, with many even taking them home for multiple nights to see how they hold up. We rate durability out of 5, which indicates how sturdy the sheets feel and how many years they’re likely to last.
This is a more subjective metric, but it’s essential for maintaining comfort. Sateen weaves are associated with a soft, smooth feel, almost silky at times. It’s a close cousin to satin, if you will.
We give every sheet set a score out of 5 for feel. This is based in part on the tester’s experience and preferences, but we’re always sure to describe the sheets’ feel in detail and note who will enjoy them. How We Tested These Sateen Sheets
Our team of certified sleep science coaches has reviewed hundreds of bed sheets with the sateen weave, using proprietary methodology and hands-on testing. When creating the list of the best sateen sheets, I paid close attention to durability and material quality.
Materials
As I’ve mentioned, it’s technically incorrect to call it “sateen fabric,” since sateen is a weave, not a material. Sateen sheets are typically made from bamboo or cotton, most often the latter. Cotton is further divided into multiple types. Some popular “long-staple” kinds, meaning the fibers used are longer, include Egyptian cotton, pima cotton, and supima cotton (the latter of which is guaranteed higher quality).
Either bamboo or cotton makes for soft, breathable sheets, and their comfort is only amplified by a sateen weave. We offer a mix of both in our top picks, and we’ve seen plenty of either throughout multiple testing rounds.
When we’re evaluating a set of sheets, we consider the quality of the materials themselves. Ideally, these should be fairly thick and sturdy enough to resist even the strongest tug-of-war. We also review any certifications these sheets may have to meet standards for organic products or for products made safely and sustainably. Many of the sheets we recommend are OEKO-Tex certified or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified.
Durability
With good care, the best sateen sheets can last a good while. Most of the sheets I put on this list have a one-year warranty or more. So they should last at least that long, if not more. However, sateen sheets tend to pill more than percale sheets. This can limit a set’s lifespan, depending on how quickly pilling occurs.
Thread Count
Most folks equate a high thread count to better quality and more luxurious offerings. It’s not so simple, as different fabrics and weaves have certain standards and limits on their thread counts. Thread count has little to do with thickness or quality and more to do with feel, thanks to how tightly the threads are woven.
If our list is any indicator, thread count varies significantly. With sateen weaves, the higher the thread count, the softer a set of sheets will typically feel. While there’s no “one size fits all” answer to the question of “what’s the best,” a general range for quality sateen sheets is a 300 to 600 thread count.
Feel
Sateen sheets feel soft, smooth, and similar to satin, but as we mentioned, the feel can vary depending on the material used. Both bamboo and cotton have their benefits, and either can provide a very soft and luxurious sensation. I’d say that bamboo feels silkier and cool to the touch, while cotton is a bit sturdier.
Feel is a subjective metric because everyone’s preferences differ. However, our testers make an effort to assign a feel rating to every sheet set out of 5. This reflects whether their comfort would appeal to the average sleeper. Sheets that are scratchy, cheap-feeling, or too thin or thick may result in a lower rating.

Value
Price is often at the forefront of shoppers’ minds when purchasing anything, let alone a sleep product. You can find sheets for as low as $20 at retailers like Target or Amazon, or find some fancy-schmancy pure silk sheets for hundreds. For us, the number on the price tag isn’t the end-all, be-all. The experience should be worth its weight in gold.
While we’d never recommend a product we don’t think you should buy, the value rating is a marker for both the price range and whether you receive an experience that’s well above what you’d expect. Many luxury sheets have lower value scores because most folks won’t drop $300 on a set. But some cheap sheets are just that—cheap—and let you down, making you wish you sprung for something a bit extra.
I recommend spending no less than $80 on a set of queen-size sheets. This ensures you’re getting a quality product that won’t fall apart within a few months of use. You’ll find plenty of options for multiple price points in our best-of list above.
What Else Is Important When Buying Sateen Sheets?
Aside from the categories mentioned above, there are some other areas you may want to consider—especially if you’re still waffling between multiple options.
Cooling
Sateen sheets trap heat more than percale sheets. Even with a looser weave, these sheets’ thicker threads mean they aren’t as breathable. This is also where thread count comes into play: The lower the thread count, the more opportunity there is for air to flow through the sheets with ease. Sheets with higher thread counts tend to trap more heat.
Temperature regulation is one of the categories we test and rate when evaluating sheets. It’s more than simply cooling; it can be whether a set feels as described. Many sheets are designed to feel warm and cozy, but most sateen sheets are fairly breathable than their thicker counterparts, like flannel sheets. You’ll notice that most sets on this list scored at least 4/5 for temperature regulation.
Fit
Fit is exactly how it sounds: how well a set of sheets fits on your mattress. Of course, choosing the corresponding size is paramount, but you’ll also want to think about whether the fitted sheet is snug to the corners of your bed or the top sheet drapes the proper amount over your frame. Many sheets come with elasticized straps to address the former issue, providing an extra layer of protection to keep everything flush.
You’ll also want to consider the height of your mattress, which is what we call “depth” when referring to sheets. Most beds are around 12″ tall, and therefore most standard sheets are designed to fit them. If your bed is taller than this, you’ll need deep-pocket sheets. These are larger or have more give to ensure they can fit properly on a bed. But keep in mind that if your mattress is smaller than 12″ tall, deep-pocket sheets may be too large and cumbersome.
Care
The best sateen sheets have very simple and easy care instructions. All of the sheets on this list are machine-washable! This ease of care makes them very accessible to most sheet shoppers. However, care instructions can vary, so it’s important that you fully read what the manufacturer recommends.

How long do sateen sheets last?
All of the sheets on this list have a minimum warranty of one year. More durable materials like long-staple cotton should last you at least two years. Bamboo sheets are very durable and should last you at least five.
These sheets also have relatively simple and easy care instructions, so with good care, they should last you a while!
Do sateen sheets wrinkle?
Sateen sheets are a great option if you’re not a fan of visually unappealing wrinkles. These sheets are more resistant to wrinkling over percale sheets. However, they tend to pill more often than percale sheets.
Are sateen sheets good quality?
The short answer is yes!
All the sheets on our list are made with high-quality materials. I’ve tested all of them and can attest to that. Sateen sheets are a great option if you don’t love that crisp feel to sheets and are looking for something similar to softer, satin-like sheets.
