The Helix Sunset Luxe is a super-soft yet supportive hybrid mattress that is a great choice for fans of a plush-feeling bed who donโ€™t want to compromise orthopedic support. Our testers found it highly versatile and a great pick for combination sleepers. Furthermore, it demonstrated excellent cooling performance, making it an ideal pick for hot sleepers.

For years now, Iโ€™ve been reviewing mattresses to help sleepers navigate the massive sleep product market and find the right bed based on their lifestyle needs. At Mattress Clarity, weโ€™ve reviewed over 500 mattresses in our seven years of operation and helped over 43,000 people find a bed for their home. Every mattress we review undergoes a strict testing process to deliver unbiased, in-person results to our readers.

Furthermore, we consult with medical experts, including quadruple board certified sleep expert Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, and Dr. Hannah Habeeb, our chief medical product tester, to ensure we continue conducting up-to-date, medically informed testing and review processes.

Notably, the Helix Sunset Luxe is also a great choice for couples, scoring well for responsiveness and motion isolation while consistently demonstrating its accessibility to different types of sleepers.

Our Helix Sunset Luxe Review in a Nutshell

Fans of softer-feeling beds who still want sturdy coil-based spinal and joint support should definitely consider the Helix Sunset Luxe hybrid mattress. It received excellent scores for responsiveness, cooling, and pressure relief, making it a great choice for couples, hot sleepers, and those who change positions throughout the night. However, people who struggle to get in and out of bed may find the bedโ€™s edge support inadequate compared to some other hybrids.

How Firm is the Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress?

A graphic showing a firmness score of 5 out of 10

The Helix Sunset Luxe is softer than the average. However, our heavyweight tester liked the amount of support he received on his back. A soft hybrid that can keep larger bodies alignned, is a bit of a mattress unicorn.

We use a firmness scale of 1 to 10 to determine a bedโ€™s firmness level, with 1 being feather-soft and 10 being rock-hard. Notably, 6.5 out of 10 is often the most accessible firmness, being medium-firm, and is considered the โ€œindustry standardโ€ by many.

However, I want to stress that firmness is subjective; a personโ€™s desired firmness depends heavily on their size and sleep patterns, so Iโ€™d also suggest taking a look at our firmness guide to get a more in-depth understanding of this.

We had an in-house tester, who was average weight (130 to 230 pounds), try out the Helix Sunset Luxe in all sleeping positions to help determine the bedโ€™s firmness. They determined that all sleepers should expect a 5/10 firmness, which is decidedly soft. However, they still found it surprisingly supportive.

Our tester found this one of the most comfortable mattresses they tried on their side, adding, โ€œI felt really good on my side. I love a plush mattress, and my hips and spine feel really aligned.โ€

Stomach sleeping on the Helix Sunset Luxe mattress

They were similarly impressed with the Sunset Luxe on their back, saying, โ€œI feel amazing as well on my back on this mattress. Itโ€™s so soft and yet supportive. The topper is really comfortable and good at conforming in the right areas.โ€

Our tester alsoโ€‹ found it great on their stomach, which is unusual for such a soft mattress, and attests to the bedโ€™s overall versatile design, saying, โ€œI feel a great, enjoyable pressure on my chest when lying on this mattress. I donโ€™t feel my lower back hurting like it normally does.โ€

Despite its super plush feel, the Sunset Luxe provided exceptional support for our tester in all sleeping positions. This isnโ€™t a common testing result for such a soft bed, which has me really suggesting the Sunset Luxe to combination sleepers and stomach sleepers in particular who want a softer bed without compromising orthopedic support.

How Does the Helix Sunset Luxe Feel for Different Body Types and Sleeping Positions?

Three icons show different sleeping positions

A 5/10 firmness rating is quite soft compared to the industry-standard medium-firm (6.5/10), but our testing found that its unique hybrid design makes it accessible to many folks who might otherwise find mattresses like the Sunset Luxe too soft

Your desired firmness reflects your sleeping position preferences and body size. For example, side sleepers will prefer a softer bed that cushions their weight and relieves pressure, while heavier back sleepers may want a firmer mattress that helps keep their spines more aligned.

Below, I estimate what each type of sleeper in each weight category may expect on the Sunset Luxe based on our testing and my research.

Heavyweight Tester โ€“ 6โ€™4โ€, 245 lbs

Despite being so soft, our heavier tester found they still had enough comfort and spinal alignment support, saying, โ€œThis mattress isnโ€™t very firm, but feels good.โ€

Average-weight Tester โ€“ 5โ€™4โ€, 165 lbs

Our average-weight tester and sleep expert, Sosha Lewis, tried out the Sunset Luxe and was quite impressed, saying, โ€œThis mattress feels really good. My shoulders feel like they are floating in a good way. I feel very balanced and supported. This mattress is prime time, and I love it.โ€

Lightweight Tester โ€“ 5โ€™5โ€, 125 lbs

โ€œThis feels amazing on my back. It provides a really nice balance between cushioning, comfort, and spinal support. I can feel the springs working together to lift my body into the correct position.โ€ โ€“ In-house tester

Helix Sunset Luxe In-Depth Test Results

Pressure Relief

Pressure Relief โ€“ 4.2

To achieve optimal sleep, itโ€™s important to choose a mattress that provides high-quality pressure relief while maintaining optimal spine and joint support. This is why we test the pressure-relieving qualities of every mattress we review. Especially given Dr. Raj Dasguptaโ€™s point, that โ€œAn unsuitable mattress can make your pressure point discomfort worse if it doesnโ€™t offer the proper support.โ€

The Helix Sunset Luxe received a slightly above-average 4.2/5 score for pressure relief after our testing. We had multiple in-house testers from different weight categories conduct an objective pressure map test and a subjective โ€œfeel testโ€ to arrive at this score.

For our testing, we place a specialized mat on the surface of a mattress to measure pressure buildup in the body, in pounds per square inch (PSI). The lower the PSI, the better; for reference, a PSI of 14.58 or lower for side sleepers, or 12.43 or lower for back sleepers, is considered good.

Each tester lies on the pressure map and switches sleeping positions. While doing this, we can observe how much pressure relief they experience in each position, as shown on the map, and note how each tester personally feels in each position.

Our lightweight tester had excellent pressure map readings of 9.36 on their side and 8.14 on their back. On their side, they said, โ€œMy spine feels really aligned, I could stay in this position all night and feel great.โ€ When they switched to their back, their feeling matched the pressure map score, saying, โ€œThis feels amazing on my back. It provides a nice balance of cushioning, comfort, and spinal support.โ€

Our average-weight tester and certified sleep science coach, Sosha Lewis, also showed great pressure map scores when testing the Helix Sunset Luxe: 10.67 on their side and 9.43 on their back.

Sosha explained how she felt, saying, โ€œI like this mattress a lot when I am on my side. This is a great blend of comfort and support. The top is really plush, and I donโ€™t feel like I am sinking down too much.โ€ She did deduct half a point from her score because of a small dip around her hip.

On her back, Sosha was also really impressed, saying, โ€œThis mattress is prime time, and I love it.โ€ She appreciated how well it filled in and cushioned her lumbar region in particular.

When our heavier tester got on the Sunset Luxe, they had a slightly elevated side-sleeping PSI score of 15.06 and a top-notch back-sleeping PSI score of 11.07. This suggests this is a solid mattress for heavier back sleepers in particular, who may struggle with back pain.

On their side, they felt really cushioned, but felt some potentially problematic sinkage, saying, โ€œThe longer I lie here, I feel like I am sinking more. It feels good, but over time it might be too soft for me.โ€ They were more impressed when they switched to their back, explaining, โ€œI like this a lot better than the side position.โ€

The Helix Sunset Luxeโ€™s PSI scores indicate that this mattress could be a great pressure-relieving choice for a variety of sleeper types of varying sizes. However, Iโ€™d recommend that heavier sleepers consider firmer mattresses, especially if they sleep on their side or stomach.

Edge Support

Edge Support โ€“ 3.6

When we test for edge support, we assess how sturdy the sides of the bed are. This may seem trivial, but edge support is actually important for couples and people who may have difficulty getting in and out of bed. A sturdy perimeter means you can expect reliable support across a bedโ€™s sleeping surface for two people, plus people who need extra help when getting in and out of bed will find edge support really helpful.

Furthermore, edge support can be a sign of a bedโ€™s long-term durability, as Dr. Dasgupta has explained: it is a key component that can โ€œoffer long-lasting comfort and support, withstanding wear and maintaining its structural integrity over time.โ€

The Helix Sunset Luxe earned a 3.6/5 for its edge support. To get this score, we had one of our testers sit on the edge of the bed to feel how sturdy it was and how easy it was to get in and out of bed. Then we had them lie on the edge of the bed and change positions to see if its sides offer the same support youโ€™d expect in the center of the surface (good for couples to know when sharing a bed).

When our testers sat on the edge of the Helix Sunset and got in and out of bed, they warned it may not be stable enough for seniors, saying, โ€œThis bed did have a rising feeling when getting off of it, but there was a lot of sinkage, and I felt I might slip off of it.โ€ Then, when they rested on the Sunset Luxeโ€™s edge, they also felt some stability issues, saying, โ€œIn every position, I felt a slope feeling and that I might fall out.โ€ They gave each test a low 2/5.

After this, we placed three sets of weighted plates along the bedโ€™s edge to assess the sinkage sleepers in each weight category may experience. This demonstrated better results: the lightweight plate set sank 2 inches (5/5), the average-weight plate set sank 3 inches (5/5), and the heavier-weight plate set sank 4 inches (4/5).

The minimal sagging from the weighted-plate test suggests some people may experience better edge support than our tester did. But overall, if edge support is really important to you, Iโ€™d consider checking out some other options in our top choices for the best mattresses that offer good edge support.

Cooling

Cooling โ€“ 4.5

Mattresses should not retain your body heat but rather dissipate it, helping keep you cool. People who always feel hot and clammy in bed should look for a mattress that promotes airflow and breathability. The Helix Sunset Luxeโ€™s construction and use of coils are designed to offer foam-based cushioning while stimulating airflow through the bedโ€™s coiled core, helping keep you cooler on its surface.

After testing the Sunset Luxe for cooling, our testers gave the mattress an above-average 4.5/5 rating.

To get this score, we use a thermal gun that measures an objectโ€™s temperature when you point it at it. With this, we had one of our testers rest on the Helix Sunset Luxe for about 5 minutes and measure the bedโ€™s core temperature before and after to see how much of their body heat the bed retained.

The bedโ€™s starting temperature was 61.4 degrees, and after they rested on the mattress, it rose to 66.4 degrees. Thatโ€™s a 5-degree increase, which is nearly excellent (the graph below highlights how we judge temperature changes).

Our tester also offered some feedback on the cooling they experienced, saying, โ€œThe mattress felt really cool, and I did not notice it heating up at all. It felt really breathable for a plush mattress topper. I felt like it actually remained cooler than most mattresses Iโ€™ve tried.โ€

Iโ€™d suggest the Helix Sunset Luxe for hot sleepers, especially those who enjoy a softer mattress. Moreover, its cooling capabilities really highlight the benefits of its hybrid construction.

Motion Isolation

Motion Isolation โ€“ 4

If youโ€™ve shared a bed with a fussy sleeper whose movements woke you up during the night, youโ€™ll appreciate quality motion isolation. A bed with good motion isolation can help prevent disruptive motion transfer between two sleepers on the same bed, which is particularly important for couples.

The Helix Sunset Luxe had above-average motion isolation, earning a 4/5 from our testers in the category. We did a few tests to determine this score, which Iโ€™ll break down below.

Ripple Test

First, we place a large, clear container of water on one side of the bed, and have a tester get in and out of bed and switch sleeping positions next to it, all while observing how much the water splashes or moves.

When our tester got in and out of bed, they observed almost no movement in the tub, saying, โ€œI was struggling to find a spot for the glass to rest and not feel like it would topple over. The pillow top is very plush. However, once I found a stable place for the glass to sit, I was surprised how little the water moved.โ€ They gave this test a 5/5.

When they switched sleeping positions next to it, they deducted one point (4/5) on the test after noticing the water moved a little, but also said, โ€œI didnโ€™t feel like the water would exit the container.โ€

Coupleโ€™s Test

Here, two testers rest on the bed, with one moving around and the other feeling for any disruptive movements. The tester who was feeling for motion transference gave this test a 3/5, saying, โ€œI barely noticed the motion when my partner was getting in and out of bed; however, I did feel noticeable movement when they changed positions.โ€

While all-foam mattresses tend to isolate motion the best, they quite often donโ€™t offer the versatility of hybrid mattresses. The Helix Sunset Luxe really did a great job of delivering plush, soft memory foam cushioning while still providing support from its innerspring layer and good motion isolation. I would definitely suggest this mattress for couples.

Response

Response โ€“ 5

According to Dr. Raj Dasgupta, โ€œA hybrid mattress features pocketed coils for targeted support and versatility. They generally provide a responsive feel and cater to various sleep positions, making them a comfortable and supportive choice for many sleepers.โ€

By responsive feel, Dr. Dasgupta means hybrids can deliver reliable bounce-back support, where the mattress reliably supports you as you move on the bed. This is particularly important if you tend to change sleeping positions or when couples are moving on a mattress.

Despite its soft feel, the Helix Sunset Luxeโ€™s hybrid build demonstrated great responsiveness during our testing, earning a perfect 5/5.

Our tester explained their score, saying, โ€œI thought it was very easy to switch positions on this mattress. The topper springs you out of each position and conforms nicely to your body. I wouldnโ€™t see anyone having an issue with moving on this bed.โ€

If youโ€™re a combination sleeper, or you and your partner are seeking a better bed for sex, cuddling, or just general lounging, the Helix Sunset Luxe is likely going to be a great choice.

Sinkage: Moderate

Our testers placed a 44-pound kettlebell on the Sunset Luxe and used a ruler to measure how much it sank into the bedโ€™s surface. They measured 3.5 inches of sinkage, which weโ€™d deem moderate.

Kettlebell sinkage test on the Helix Sunset Luxe mattress
Light Sinkage0-2.5โ€
Moderate Sinkage2.6-4โ€
Deep Sinkage4+โ€

Bounce: High

Bounce reflects how responsive a mattress is, so we always test for it. So, we dropped a ball on the Helix Sunset Luxe from a ladder and recorded how high it bounced back up.

Our testers measured a 26.5-inch bounce for the ball, which, as you can see in our graph below, suggests this is a super-bouncy bed with great responsiveness. We gave the Sunset Luxe a 5/5 for this test.

Low Bounce12โ€ or less
Moderate Bounce12โ€-18โ€
High Bounce18โ€ or more

Noise

Noise  โ€“ 5

If you ever slept on a cheap innerspring mattress that creaks at even the slightest movement, you can understand how problematic a noisy mattress can be. To assess how noisy the Helix Sunset Luxe is, we had one of our testers move around on it and listen for any noise. They reported โ€œno noise at all,โ€ and gave the mattress a 5/5 for the test.

Sex

Sex โ€“ 4.5

We average the results of our responsiveness (how easy it is to move around on the bed), edge support (consistent full-perimeter support), and noise (privacy) scores to determine how well a bed is for sexually active couples. The Helix Sunset Luxe received a 4.5/5 rating, making it a great choice for couples.

Adjustable Base Compatibility

Our tester did not recommend using the Helix Sunset Luxe with an adjustable base. After trying it out, they gave the mattress a low 1/5 score for its adjustable base compatibility, saying, โ€œThis mattress did really poorly on the adjustable base. The mattressโ€™s thickness prevents it from conforming well. Without me on the mattress, it would pop up instantly.โ€

If youโ€™re seeking a better mattress option to match with an adjustable base or bed frame, consider checking out our top choices for the best mattresses to use with an adjustable base.

Helix Sunset Luxe Customer Experience Scores

Below, Iโ€™ll go through all of Helixโ€™s fine print and customer experience scores for its Sunset Luxe mattress.

Trial Period

Trial Period โ€“ 4

Helix offers the Sunset Luxe mattress with a 120-night risk-free sleep trial. We gave this a 4/5 score, deducting a point only because some similar mattresses offer a more generous 365-night trial.

Warranty

Warranty โ€“ 4.5

Your purchase of the Helix Sunset Luxe includes a limited lifetime warranty, which we scored a 4.5/5. This covers essentially any materials or manufacturing issues Helix may be responsible for, but not normal โ€œwear and tear.โ€

Notably, over 90% of warranty claims were fulfilled in 2025, according to Helix, but we deducted half a point for this category due to reduced compensation for warranty claims on mattresses older than 16 years (60% of the original price, and 75% of the original price after 21 years).

However, Iโ€™d suggest replacing your mattress every 10 years and taking a look at our article on how often you should consider getting a new mattress.

Unboxing and Moving

Unboxing and Moving โ€“ 3

The Helix Sunset Luxe is shipped for free directly from its Arizona-based factory to your home via standard delivery, compressed in a box. The queen-size model weighs roughly 120 pounds, so Iโ€™d suggest having someone help you move it into place when it arrives.

Unboxing the Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress

However, our tester found the mattress โ€œdifficult to unbox,โ€ warning that โ€œI did need to get help from a friend to hold it while I got the plastic off, and it was heavier than I was used to with unboxing mattresses.โ€ As a result, they gave this category a 3/5.

If youโ€™re worried about moving the Sunset Luxe into place in your home, Helix offers white-glove delivery for an additional $219, which includes arranging a crew to unbox and move the mattress exactly where youโ€™d like it.

Readiness After Unboxing

According to Helix, you can sleep on the Sunset Luxe the same night it arrives, but you should give the mattress 24-48 hours to fully decompress so its coils and foam layers can take their โ€œfinal form.โ€ Additionally, Helix recommends allowing the mattress to decompress for at least 2 hours before sleeping on it.

Off-gassing

Off-gassing โ€“ 4

When we took the Helix Sunset Luxe out of its box in our testing studio, our tester did notice a considerable amount of off-gassing, saying, โ€œThis mattress did have a strong chemical odor that gave me a headache when unboxing. But, when I returned 24 hours later, the smell had fully dissipated.โ€

Some mattresses weโ€™ve tested have arrived with little to no off-gassing smell, so we deducted a point in this category, giving the Sunset Luxe a 4/5. However, given that many companies suggest waiting 72 hours (or longer for cheaper, more toxic mattresses) for any off-gassing smell to dissipate, this is a reasonable off-gassing time frame.

Helix Sunset Luxe Construction

The Helix Sunset Luxe is a softer feeling hybrid mattress that uses both foam and coils in its construction. Iโ€™ll go through its build and break down the mattress layer by layer below, so you know exactly what youโ€™re getting.

Mattress Height & Weight

The Helix Sunset Luxe stands 13.5 inches tall and weighs between 83 (twin) and 145 pounds (king), depending on the model you choose. Its queen-size model, which we tested, weighs 120 pounds.

Materials

The Sunset Luxe has seven layers, primarily consisting of various cushioning and supportive foams that are all CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they are produced without toxic chemicals or heavy metals. The mattress also has a massive steel coil layer for enhanced support and airflow.

Layers

Construction of the Helix Sunset Luxe mattress

On the surface, the Sunset Luxe features a super-plush Tencel cooling cover made from eco-friendly eucalyptus fibers. Then there is a comfort-focused gel memory foam top layer and a denser memory foam support layer for enhanced cushioning.

Then there are two responsive and transitional layers designed specifically to support side and combination sleepers with reliable and responsive cushioning.

Under this is the Sunset Luxeโ€™s innerspring layer, designed with zoned support, consisting of up to 1000 individually encased coils that provide support toward the surface while helping create the bedโ€™s foundation. Adding to this foundation, and acting as the final layer and base of the bed is a high-density foam layer that offers durable full-perimeter support.

How To Try and Buy The Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress

Helixโ€™s Sunset Luxe can be tried in person at a variety of showrooms across the US. You can easily find a store near you by typing in your zip code on the Helix websiteโ€™s official store locator. The Sunset Luxe is also available specifically on Amazon.

Based on my research, youโ€™ll usually get the best price by ordering the Sunset Luxe directly from Helix on their website. The downside is you wonโ€™t be able to try it in person as you would at a brick-and-mortar store, but given their 120-night sleep trial with a free return, I would suggest this route for the best deal. The mattress is also often heavily discounted on Helixโ€™s official site.

Helix Sunset Luxe vs. Nectar Classic Memory Foam

The Nectar Classic memory foam is an all-foam mattress, unlike the Sunset Luxe, which includes a layer of coils. The Nectar is more affordable ($699-$1,798, depending on the size and before any discounts) than the Sunset Luxe, but both are often seriously discounted. The Nectar also offers a more generous 365-night sleep trial period. When tested, the Classic only outperformed the Sunset Luxe in motion isolation (4.7/5) and cooling (5/5).

Despite being made of foam, the Nectar Classic is much firmer than the Sunset Luxe, with a 7/10 on our firmness scale. Overall, the mattress may be better for couples and hot sleepers, but only slightly. I would recommend the Nectar Classic for budget-minded shoppers and people who prefer a firmer mattress.

Thermal imaging of the Nectar Classic Memory Foam Mattress

Helix Sunset Luxe vs. Helix Midnight Luxe

The Midnight Luxe is another hybrid mattress among Helixโ€™s luxe models offered by the company. The biggest difference between the two is that the Midnight Luxe is firmer than the Sunset Luxe. Notably, the beds are the exact same price.

In our testing, the Sunset Luxe outperformed the Midnight Luxe in almost every category, except edge support. The Midnight Luxeโ€™s better edge support (4.8/5) may make it a better option for seniors or people with mobility issues, and suggest a more durable design. Both mattresses are quite similar, but I would suggest the Sunset Luxe for sleepers who prefer a softer firmness, in particular, and couples who really prioritize responsiveness in a bed.

Helix Sunset Luxe vs. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is also a hybrid mattress, but is available in three firmness options (soft, medium, firm), making it more accessible to different sleeper types. Both are similarly priced and often discounted.

The only testing category where the Aurora Luxe outperformed the Sunset Luxe in our studio was edge support (4.4/5). Otherwise, the mattresses demonstrated similar quality and versatility, with both being great for couples and combination sleepers (both scored a 5/5 for responsiveness). I think the multiple firmness options are the most standout feature of the Aurora Luxe when compared to the Sunset Luxe. If you want a firmer hybrid option, the Aurora may be right for you. However, if you prefer a softer mattress, Iโ€™d go with the Sunset Luxe based on our testing results.

Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress FAQs

Is the Helix Sunset Luxe good for side sleepers?

Yes, the Sunset Luxeโ€™s balance of soft cushioning polyfoams and innerspring support makes it a great option for side sleepers. However, some heavier side sleepers may experience problematic sinkage, though this will likely vary by person.

If youโ€™re still unsure if the Helix Sunset Luxe is right for you, I would suggest taking our sleep quiz to help figure out the best match based on how you sleep.

Does the Helix Sunset Luxe sleep cool?

The Helix Sunset Luxe is a great, softer, hybrid choice for hot sleepers with an eco-friendly breathable Tencel cover. The mattress scored an above-average 4.5/5 for temperature regulation, or its ability to dissipate body heat.

Furthermore, you can add Helixโ€™s GlacioTex Cooling Pillow Top for additional cooling for a fee ($249.33 before discounts).

Is the Helix Sunset Luxe good for back sleepers?

Yes, based on our testing, despite its softer feel, the Sunset Luxe provides excellent spinal support for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers (as does the Helix Moonlight).

Again, some heavier back sleepers may sink too much into its upper comfort layers, but likely this will also vary depending on the personโ€™s body weight.

Does the Helix Sunset Luxe have strong edge support?

The Sunset Luxeโ€™s edge support was not one of its standout features during our testing. The mattress scored a below-average 3.6/5 for the category. This is by no means a bad grade for the Helix mattress, but given the price, if edge support is really important to you, Iโ€™d look into other options.

Is the Helix Sunset Luxe responsive or bouncy?

Yes, the Helix Sunset Luxe scored a perfect 5/5 for responsiveness. The mattress is a great softer choice for couples or combination sleepers who really appreciate responsive support when moving on top of their bed.
