Like Saatva’s other products, its weighted blanket is designed to be luxurious and durable. And it’s made to provide gentle, even pressure for users to enjoy restorative sleep. Here’s a quick overview of who would enjoy this weighted blanket the most and who might need to consider something else:

Who Might Like the Saatva Weighted Blanket?Who Might Not Like Saatva Weighted Blanket?
People looking for excellent weight distributionHot sleepers or people that live in hot environments
Fans of a velvety feelThose looking for a machine-washable blanket
Environmentally-conscious sleepers looking for organic materialsAverage and heavyweight sleepers who need a heavier blanket

30-60 Min Nap with the Saatva Weighted Blanket

When I first unboxed the Saatva weighted blanket, one thing grabbed my attention immediately. Typically, weighted blankets do not need to off gas, but the Saatva weighted blanket had a slight chemical smell right out of the box. I let the blanket air out for about 24 hours before testing it and the smell was gone after this time. If you are sensitive to strong smells, this is something to be aware of.

The first standout quality of the Saatva weighted blanket is its unique cover. It’s made from 100% organic cotton velvet, which is a higher quality material than you’ll find in most fuzzy weighted blankets, which are made with synthetic polyester. The slightly fuzzy texture is luxurious and cozy while still feeling lightweight and breathable.

Within a few minutes of being under the blanket, I felt a sensation called deep touch pressure. This is also known as deep pressure stimulation, and is the phenomenon when gentle pressure from being held or squeezed relaxes the nervous system, releasing serotonin and dopamine. I could feel my body relax and my stress melt away resting under this blanket.

What makes the Saatva weighted blanket so calming and luxurious, for me, is its top-tier weight distribution. Its weight is evenly dispersed with slightly less filling near the edges and corners. After an hour, I didn’t want to leave my bed because I was so comfortable and cozy under the weight.

How Much Does the Saatva Weighted Blanket Weigh?

The Saatva weighted blanket comes in two weight options. The first is a 12 lb throw blanket size and the second is a 20 lb blanket made for queen and king-size mattresses. For this review, I received the 12 lb throw blanket in the taupe color. I found the blanket to be the perfect size for solo sleepers or for lounging on the couch.

How heavy a weighted blanket should be for you depends on your body weight. To find your recommended weighted blanket size, check out Mattress Clarity’s weighted blanket calculator. The general rule of thumb for determining the best weight option for you is to take your weight and divide it by 10. This gives you 10% of your body weight, which is give or take what you should aim for when choosing a weighted blanket size.

I am a lightweight person, and 12 lbs is around 10% of my body weight. I found this blanket just heavy enough to receive deep touch pressure, but this will not be the case for everyone. If you weigh over 150 lbs, this blanket will almost certainly not be heavy enough to feel the soothing effect weighted blankets should provide.

How Does the Saatva Weighted Blanket Feel?

This weighted blanket’s outer cover is made from 100% organic cotton velvet. The feel is somewhat similar to fuzzy velvet, but cotton velvet is made from natural fibers and is more lightweight than velvet. The blanket is filled with all-natural micro glass beads that are so small you won’t feel them between your fingers.

For me, this throw blanket is the perfect weight because it is around 10% of my body weight. Its weight concentration gave me the calming feeling I was hoping to experience.

Saatva Weighted Blanket Performance

Let’s go over how the Saatva weighted blanket performs in other categories.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Weighted blankets will generally sleep warm because their weight traps heat and constricts airflow. This blanket does not come with cooling features, which is perfectly fine for people that live in colder climates. Saatva recommends if you get too hot sleeping with a weighted blanket to only use it on the coldest nights to experience warm and cozy comfort.

As a lightweight person, I go between sleeping cold and sleeping hot throughout the seasons. But I also live in Texas where nighttime temperatures can be uncomfortably hot. I definitely felt warm under the blanket, but not warm enough to feel overheated until about an hour with my fan off. Having the fan on made me feel more comfortable than having it off. The blanket delivers the sensation of being wrapped in a warm hug, which might feel too warm for some.

Care Instructions

According to its tag, this blanket should be spot-cleaned and cannot be put in a dryer or cleaned with bleach. Its product page also mentions the blanket can be dry cleaned as needed.

Allergies/Allergens?

The Saatva weighted blanket is not labeled as hypoallergenic, but Saatva’s quality materials should not trigger any allergies. Its organic cotton velvet cover is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified, which means it passed third-party testing to be free of harmful chemicals or other unhealthy materials.

Saatva Weighted Blanket Construction

According to its care tag, the Saatva weighted blanket is made from 67% all-natural glass beads and 33% organic cotton velvet. The cotton velvet cover features a quilted diamond pattern with each diamond filled with glass beads. These diamonds are roughly 3”x3” each, which makes for great weight distribution. Looking up close, you can see the attention to detail and high-quality construction that Saatva is known for.

How Does the Saatva Weighted Blankets Compare To Other Blankets

The Saatva weighted blanket is a luxurious product that makes for a worthwhile bedding investment. But it might not be for everyone—other weighted blankets come with different features that might appeal to certain sleepers more. Let’s compare the Saatva weighted blanket to weighted blankets from Bearaby and Luxome.

Saatva vs Bearaby

The Bearaby blanket uses a chunky knit construction that makes it unlike standard weighted blanket designs. And what makes it unique is that it has no filling. The weight comes from the fabric itself. With no filling, you get exceptional weight distribution and even pressure throughout, just like with the Saatva blanket.

Weighted blankets tend to sleep warm because their weight traps heat between you and your mattress. But the Tree Napper’s knit construction has large loops that allow considerable airflow, preventing hot sleepers from overheating. The Saatva weighted blanket was not too hot for me, but it is not designed for hot sleepers the way that the Tree Napper is.

The Bearaby Tree Napper Weighted Blanket's Open Knit Loops

The Bearaby Tree Napper comes in a wider array of neutral colors with some fun color options while the Saatva blanket comes in taupe and graphite. The Saatva weighted blanket comes in 12 lb and 20 lb weight options and the Bearaby weighted blanket comes in 15 lb, 20 lb and 25 lb weight options. For the most benefits, choose a weighted blanket that is around 10% of your body weight.

Saatva vs Luxome

Like Saatva, Luxome produces a range of high-quality bedding products like their adjustable LAYR pillow. The Luxome Cooling weighted blanket and the Saatva weighted blanket are both luxury products made from quality materials like organic fabrics and micro glass beads.

The Luxome weighted blanket comes in two cover options: a dual-sided bamboo lyocell and minky cover or an entirely plush minky cover. There is also an option to purchase an integrated cover or a removable duvet cover with more color and style options than the Saatva weighted blanket. And the entire Luxome weighted blanket is machine-washable, no matter which option you choose.

Luxome Weighted Blanket Construction

The Luxome Cooling weighted blanket lives up to its namesake—it’s great for hot sleepers. Its bamboo lyocell is breathable, moisture-wicking and is responsibly sourced without harmful chemicals. However, the bamboo lyocell won’t feel as warm and cozy as Saatva’s organic cotton velvet cover. If you are looking for a warm and cozy option from Luxome, consider choosing their plush minky cover option which retains more heat.

Finally, the Luxome Cooling weighted blanket comes in four weight and size options: 8 lb, 15 lb, 18 lb, and 30 lb. The 30 lb weight option is ideal for couples sharing queen or king size mattresses. Comparatively, the sharable queen/king size option from Saatva only weighs 20 lb.
