Brooklyn Bedding Mattress Firmness and Feel

It wouldn’t be a customizable mattress if it only had one firmness level! To really make this bed your own, you can choose what kind of comfort layer you like. Let’s walk through all of the different possibilities.

How Firm is the Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress?

Mattress Clarity’s firmness scale ranges from 1-10, with 6.5/10 representing medium-firm.

Brooklyn Bedding offers three different firmness levels: soft, medium, and firm. I personally tested the medium firm option, which feels like a classic 6.5/10.

Sleeping On The Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress

Because I’m an average weight combination sleeper, I chose the medium firmness level. I also ordered the luxe memory foam for extra pressure relief.

Brooklyn Bedding Custom - back sleeping

This combination works exceptionally well for me. When back sleeping, I feel plenty of support from the coils underneath. The slow-moving memory foam gently contours my body and cushions my pressure points. This combination isn’t a great pick for stomach sleepers. If you fall in this category, opt for a firm mattress with either TitanFlex or latex foam.

What Does the Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress Feel Like?

My custom mattress has a classic hybrid feel. There’s a bit of bounciness from the coils and some slow-moving foam on top. However, if you’re a fan of responsive mattresses, opt for their latex foam comfort layer. Latex immediately snaps back into place after you apply pressure, so you won’t feel yourself sinking into the bed too much.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs

Average weight back and side sleepers will want to opt for the medium firm mattress. This option creates a great balance of comfort and support, which you need in both sleeping positions.

Average weight stomach sleepers, however, will want to get a firm mattress with either TitanFlex or Latex foam. If a mattress feels too soft and slow-moving, stomach sleepers could feel their hips sink out of alignment. This can lead to lower back pain over time, so it’s essential to choose the right configuration.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs

Most heavyweight sleepers will want to opt for Brooklyn Bedding’s firmest option. This should create ample support for the lower back and hips. If you’re a heavier side sleeper, you may want to choose Brooklyn Bedding’s Luxe Memory Foam. The slow-moving foam will really help alleviate pressure on joints.

If you’re a heavier stomach sleeper, I recommend getting the latex foam comfort layer. Because this material feels naturally responsive, it won’t make you feel like you’re ‘bottoming out’ on the mattress.

Folks who weigh more than 300lbs, though, may find the Brooklyn Bedding custom isn’t supportive enough. Anyone in this category may want to consider getting the Brooklyn Bedding Titan mattress, one of the best mattresses for heavy people.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs

Lightweight sleepers could choose between the soft or medium firmness options. Ultimately, it boils down to your personal preference. The soft model creates a bit more plushness and body contouring, while the medium model offers more support.

If you weigh less than 130lbs, any of the comfort layers should work well. Ultimately, it boils down to personal preference. Fans of a responsive and breathable feel should choose the latex. Love that slow-moving memory foam? The Luxe Memory foam will do the trick. Of course, you can never go wrong with Brooklyn Bedding’s proprietary TitanFlex material.

Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress Construction

Don’t get overwhelmed! Yes, there are tons of options here, but we’ll walk you through each element to help you craft the bed of your dreams.

Cover

Brooklyn Bedding has three different covers to choose from. Their baseline option, made of organic cotton, feels soft and breathable.

Brooklyn Bedding Custom Construction

But if you want an upgrade, you can spend a bit more to get the luxury cooling cover. This is the option I chose, and as a hot sleeper, I really appreciate its cooling qualities. It really does feel cool to the touch!

Athletes may want to upgrade to the recovery fabric. This high-quality material helps turn body heat into energy, which is especially beneficial for runners.

Comfort Layers

You can also choose between three different comfort layers. If you need lots of extra body contouring, but prefer responsive materials, opt for the TitanFlex foam.

If you like to gently sink into your mattress, the luxe memory foam will do the trick.

Hot sleepers may want to pick the latex foam layer. This naturally breathable material feels super responsive, so you won’t sink into it and trap body heat. Plus, it’s an all-natural material!

Support Layer

All Brooklyn Bedding custom mattresses have a support layer made from 8” of individually encased coils. To help you maintain the correct spinal alignment, the coils have a zoned support system. This is a fancy way of saying that it feels firmer toward the center and softer near the head and foot.

While you can’t change the support layer, you can pick your mattress’s firmness level. If you share a bed with a partner who has a different preference, you can get a split comfort mattress. That’s right! Brooklyn Bedding can make one side of the bed feel soft and the other firm. That way, each person gets the support and contouring they need. Important note: This option is only available for king and split king mattresses.

Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress Size Options and Price

Even though you have lots of options to choose from, Brooklyn Bedding ensures their pricing is transparent and easy to understand. Here’s a quick breakdown of the price points and size options available.

Note: The luxury cooling and recovery cover costs an additional $100.

Brooklyn Bedding Mattress Performance

Now that we understand how the customization process works, let’s check out the mattress’s performance features. Keep scrolling to learn about its cooling features, edge support, motion isolation, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

All Brooklyn Bedding Custom mattresses contain an 8” coil support layer, which provides plenty of room for airflow. If you’re an especially hot sleeper, though, you may also want to get the latex comfort layer. In our experience, these materials help sleepers stay cool all night long.

Motion Transfer

Because this mattress has bouncy innersprings, it doesn’t isolate motion exceptionally well. When we tested it out, we felt a great deal of motion coming from the other side of the bed. This could be a deterrent for many couples, especially if one person is a light sleeper. If this is a dealbreaker, check out our list of the best mattresses for couples.

Edge Support

The strong coil system creates decent edge support. If you order a mattress with slow-moving Luxe foam, you’ll feel yourself sink into the top layers quite a bit. However, the innersprings at the bottom prevent you from bottoming out.

Brooklyn Bedding Custom edge support

Overall, you shouldn’t feel like you’ll fall off the bed when resting or sitting near the side.

Durability

Thanks to its high-quality comfort layers and strong support coils, we expect the Brooklyn Bedding mattress to last about 10 years.

Off-Gassing

All Brooklyn Bedding Custom mattresses arrive compressed inside a box, so it’s common to notice a slight chemical smell at first. This is a totally normal occurrence, however, and the scent should dissipate after 48 hours.

Noise

When we tested the Brooklyn Bedding Custom mattress, we didn’t notice any squeaky sounds. It’s possible the coils could create noise as time goes on, but because the springs are individually-encased, we don’t think this will become a significant issue.

Sex

Typically, when people look for one of the best mattresses for sex, they search for something that’s easy to move around on. Thanks to its springy coil system, the Brooklyn Bedding Custom should fit the bill. Partners should have no issue switching positions on top of this bed.

Company Policies

So, maybe you’re thinking about purchasing your very own custom mattress. Before you click ‘add to cart,’ make sure you fully understand Brooklyn Bedding’s company policies. We’ve outlined the most important elements below.

Warranty Info

Brooklyn Bedding Custom mattresses are backed by 10-year warranties.

Sleep Trial

Brooklyn Bedding gives customers a 120-night sleep trial period, so they have plenty of time to test it out within the comfort of their bedroom.

Return Policy

Not happy with your new mattress? You can easily return it during the trial period and receive a full refund.

Common Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress Complaints

Most people love their Brooklyn Brooklyn Bedding custom mattress, but a few people complained about its motion isolation. Because it’s a hybrid bed, it tends to transfer motion easily.

How Does The Brooklyn Bedding Custom Compare To Other Mattresses?

As you may know, there are tons of mattress companies out there. To help make your purchasing decision easier, we’ll compare Brooklyn Bedding to two other well-loved mattress brands: Helix and Saatva.

Brooklyn Bedding Vs. Helix

Helix doesn’t create custom mattresses, but they do have a unique tool. When you visit their website, you’ll reach their mattress quiz. After answering questions about your body type, sleeping position, and personal preferences, Helix will direct you to your best-suited mattress.

Helix Midnight Mattress - Back Sleeping

Both companies have extra add-ons for hot sleepers, so they’re great choices if you overheat at night. When it comes to pricing, they differ quite a bit. Some baseline Helix models cost less than the Brooklyn Bedding Custom, and others cost more.

Who Should Get The Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress?

  • People who want to choose each element of their mattress
  • Folks looking for a bed with split comfort options

Who Should Get a Helix Mattress?

  • Those who don’t want to craft a mattress from scratch
  • Shoppers looking for a twin, twin XL, or full mattress

Read our Helix mattress review and check out our Helix mattress comparisons.

Brooklyn Bedding Vs. Saatva

These two brands have many distinct differences. Most notably, Saatva does not sell bed-in-a-box mattresses. All of their beds arrive fully expanded and ready to rest on.

The Saatva Classic mattress, however, does come in three different firmness levels – just like the Brooklyn Bedding Custom. Both beds also contain springy coils and plush comfort layers.

Saatva Mattress - Back Sleeping

Besides its firmness level, Saatva doesn’t have many customization options. Their mattress also costs a little bit more than Brooklyn Bedding’s. However, you have more size options with Saatva than you do with a Brooklyn Bedding Custom mattress.

Who Should Get a Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress?

  • People who want to choose every aspect of their bed
  • Folks who want a bed-in-a-box mattress
  • Those who want to save some money

Who Should Get a Saatva?

  • People who want more size options
  • Those who do not want to wait for their beds to off-gas and expand
  • Shoppers looking for an especially durable mattress

Read our Saatva Classic mattress review and check out our Saatva mattress comparisons.
