Kenny is a certified sleep science coach and staff writer at Mattress Clarity, where he reviews mattresses, bedding, and sleep accessories to help you skip the guesswork and enjoy a restful nightโs sleep. Heโs been featured as a sleep expert in publications such as Livingetc and U.S. News & World Report. As a natural tinkerer, he enjoys getting hands-on with each product to determine if it truly makes a difference in sleep quality. When heโs not testing out mattresses and other sleep products, you can find him hiking, biking, or trying out new local eats.
Caitlin has more than 15 years of experience writing about sleep and fitness. After getting an M.A. in journalism from the University of Missouri, she spent nearly a decade as a staff writer and editor at Runnerโs World and Bicycling magazines.
Caitlinโs work has focused primarily on health, the outdoors, and parentingโand taken the form of everything from running shoe reviews to long, weepy personal essays about biking across the country. You can find her writing in Outside, Wirecutter, Lonely Planet, Menโs Health, ELLE, Popular Mechanics, Menโs Journal, Sierra Club Magazine, and more.
A side sleeper, lifelong sleepwalker (itโs a problem), and newly hardcore sleepmaxxer, when sheโs not editing and writing about health and gear, she likes to ride bikes, run trails, and be under the covers by 9:30 p.m.
Melanie has been writing and editing sleep-related content for more than four years. After creating a comprehensive guide to sleep hygiene for a sleep tracker app, she became fascinated by the science behind getting good rest. Since then, sheโs immersed herself in the complicated world of mattresses and bedroom accessories, marrying her sleep expertise with a wealth of product knowledge.
After Sosha began writing sleep-related content, she knew she wanted to learn more about this important (yet often elusive!) aspect of human health and well-being. She became a Certified Sleep Science Coach to better understand what goes into getting a good nightโs restโincluding oneโs choice of mattress. Sosha now calls upon this training when she tests and writes about beds and sleep accessories, and when sheโs consulted for recommendations by publications such as Livingetc.

The Helix Midnight is our pick for the best mattress made in the USA. This high-quality hybrid mattress has supportive coils alongside a plush pillow top, providing excellent pressure relief. It all comes in at an attractive price point. The mattress also caters to side sleepers, for whom it was designed, but its medium-firm feel can accommodate a variety of sleeper types.
Naturally, we double-checked the U.S.-made bonafides of each mattress on this list to ensure they meet the mark. Every bed on this list is assembled on American soilโmost even ship straight from the factory to your door.
Beyond that, we also favored mattresses made with high-quality materials, whether constructed with foam or coils. Regardless of price point, every mattress we recommend is durable, comfortable, and of the highest craftsmanship.
It isnโt enough to simply be built in the USA; we wanted these beds to offer real quality comfort for folks who are looking to support American businesses. We test everything from a bedโs pressure relief to its cooling ability, rating each out of 5. For this list, we sought to find mattresses that earned 4 and above in multiple categories, a sign of a well-rounded mattress that can elevate your sleep experience.
We also considered beds that cater to a wide range of sleeper types, including preferred sleeping positions, body types, and any conditions that can be addressed by the right mattress. Youโll see a range of options, but most will fall around the medium-firm mark (6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale), as this is one of the most versatile firmnesses out there.
Of course, we have some beds we picked especially for certain folks, like those who sleep on their side or those who weigh over 230 pounds.
An elevated warranty (typically 15 years or more) and sleep trial period (100 to 365 nights) are typical of a mattress made in the USA, and our roundup exemplifies this. We made sure to look for mattresses that come with generous company policies so you can get the most bang for your buck with your investment.
Take a closer look at our customer service score for each bed, which is an average of the warranty and sleep trial scoresโalongside any data we have for the unboxing process, in which we rate things like off-gassing and how long the bed takes to fully expand.
For reference, lifetime warranties and year-long sleep trials will earn a 5 out of 5. All of the mattresses on this list actually come with at least a limited lifetime warranty, while the length of their sleep trials may vary.
Our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches selected the best beds made in the USA by looking for top performers in these categories: certified American-made, overall performance, and company policies.
But our full process involves testing numerous aspects of a bedโs performance, including cooling, pressure relief, edge support, and more. We evaluate and score these factors using specialized technology as well as firsthand accounts of how a bed feels to testers with different body types.
Once we have all those scores, we calculate the bedโs overall score using a weighted formula. This overall score is a good indicator of a mattressโs general quality, and is always a number out of 5.
As we decide which mattresses to feature on any roundup, we only include beds with an overall score of 3.5 out of 5 or higher. Even if a mattress does certain things well, we wonโt point you towards it if it falls below this baseline.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a premium medium-firm mattress that offers a hotel-like feel for a relatively affordable price. The only element in which it scored below average was responsiveness, so if you like a super bouncy bed or youโre a restless combination sleeper, consider another model.
The Sunset Luxe is one of Helixโs softest options in its luxury hybrid collection. However, it provides plush pressure-relieving comfort while maintaining optimal spinal support for a variety of sleeper types. The Titan Plus Luxe is a medium-firm hybrid intended for heavyweight sleepers. We found its responsiveness a good match for combination sleepers, though back and stomach sleepers should also fare well, thanks to a notably lifted feel. We werenโt terribly impressed with the bedโs edge support or pressure relief, and weโd steer most side sleepers to models with more contouring. Those who prefer a firm feel and want a mattress engineered to support more weight should fare well.

Couples
This bed absorbs motion well for a hybrid mattress, so couples shouldnโt notice their partnerโs movements.
Pros of the Helix Midnight Mattress
The Helix Midnight mattress is a fantastic choice for back and side sleepers. Itโs a perfect medium-firm mattress that offers a lot of comfort from the foam at the top with supportive coils at the bottom.
This mattress shouldnโt trap too much heat thanks to the coils, which allow for airflow. You also have the option to add a specialized cooling cover.
Hybrid mattresses can be bouncy and disturb others who are in bed, but the Helix Midnight absorbs motion very well for this type of mattress.
Cons of the Helix Midnight Mattress
This mattress is too soft to support stomach sleepers. The hips will dip into this bed over time, which can cause strain on the lower back.
While this bed absorbs motion well, itโs still a hybrid. If you donโt want that bouncy, coil feeling to your mattress, you should look for an all-foam bed.

The Helix Midnight is Helixโs most popular model because of its medium-firmness and works well for back and side sleepers. The top layers of foam provide good pressure relief, but the coils offer a good amount of support. It wonโt trap heat thanks to those coils, and you can even opt for a cooling cover. Be sure to watch our video review to learn more about the Helix Midnight.
Helix mattresses are proudly manufactured in an Arizona factory, and the Midnight is the brandโs most popular line. This medium-firm hybrid is meant for side sleepers, but its versatile profile offers support and pressure relief in equal measure across all sleeping positions and body types. It earned a 4.3/5 in our pressure relief tests, as well as 4.4/5 in edge support, and a number of 4/5 scores. It also comes with a 100-night trial and a generous lifetime warranty.

Our testers rated the firmness of this mattress at 6.5/10, smack-dab in the medium-firm range on our scale. Physical therapist Dr. Hannah Habeeb immediately noticed how the bed was โfabulous for side sleeping,โ in her own words. โItโs soft and offers tons of cushioning and sinkage at the hips and shoulders.โ But she also found the mattress had enough support for stomach sleeping. โThe springs help provide lift at the hips, and the foam allows cushioning at the hip bones,โ she said, adding that she really liked it in this position.
Why the Helix Midnight Stands Out
Among our testers, the Helix Midnight was a particular hit for back sleeping. โI feel great on my back,โ said our heavyweight tester. โThe top layer is super cushiony on my spine, I donโt feel any pressure in my shoulders, and I feel really great overall.โ He added that he thought it would work โnicelyโ for a lot of different sleepers.
Thanks to the Helix Midnightโs sturdy edge support, the sleepers it should work for includes older adults and those with mobility concerns. Our in-house tester noticed a bit of sinkage when he sat on the edge of the mattress, but said he โwould feel comfortable sitting there for a while.โ
Lying down, he barely encountered any dipping or sagging. โI wouldnโt be able to tell I was lying on the edge of the bed, and I didnโt feel like I was going to roll off in the middle of the night,โ he said. This level of security on the edge can not only help folks spread out, but also make it easier to get in and out of bed.
The Helix Midnightโs hybrid construction also effortlessly blended response and motion isolation, two areas in which it earned a 4/5 score. The coils made it easier for our tester to move around and switch positions, while the pillow top stifled movements before they traveled across the surface during our partnered motion transfer test.
Where the Helix Midnight Falls Short
This bed lagged behind in our cooling test, producing just average results. โI wouldnโt say it was a hot mattress,โ our tester said after lying down on it for a few minutes, โbut a warmer sleeper may want to consider something with a bit more cooling and airflow.โ If youโre looking for a super-cool bed, check out the aptly named Leesa Sapira Chill.

The Bear Original is a memory foam mattress with broad appeal. It provides good support and pressure relief for side and back sleepers who weigh less than 230 lbs and comes with plenty of cooling features. Below average. The firmer feel of this foam mattress makes it a bit more responsive, but it still canโt rival beds with coils.
The Bear Original mattress has a slightly firmer feel, earning a 7/10 on our firmness scale, rather than the slow-moving sinkage of most soft foam beds. This makes it better suited to sleeping positions that prioritize support, such as sleeping on your stomach or back.
Why the Bear Original Stands Out
During testing, Dr. Habeeb, our chief medical product tester, preferred the bed on her back. โMy lower back actually feels really supported, and the foam is contouring this area,โ she said. โThis bed is pretty firm, so Iโd recommend it to back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel for sure.โ Our heavyweight tester echoed her sentiment: โI do feel pressure is evenly distributed and Iโm supported in this position.โ
Usually, softer foam beds are better for motion isolation because they allow more sinkage, but my colleague Melanie Kassel found that the Bear stifled motion rather well. She hopped into bed with another tester to find out what it would be like to sleep with a partner. โI could feel my fellow tester get into bed and switch positions, but this was solely due to a faint โpullingโ sensation on the bedโs cover,โ she said. โ
Melanie was also able to move around on the surface of the bed without feeling โstuck.โ She wouldnโt call the bed particularly bouncy, but it could be a good compromise for combination sleepers or sexually active folks who donโt want to part with memory foam.
Where the Bear Original Falls Short
Though the Bear Original earned a high edge support score, this was mostly due to our weighted edge support test. We placed varying weights on the edge of the bed to represent different sleeper types, and each time the bed sank only a few inches under them. But when Melanie sat down on the edge of the bed, she felt it squished down far too easily for her liking. โIt felt like I could slide off while seated,โ she said.
If you have mobility concerns or just love edge support that wonโt quit, check out the Saatva Classic, which has a rock-solid perimeter. You can read more about this bed in our Bear Original review.

Hybrid mattresses are the pinnacle of balance, combining the cushy comfort of memory foam with the sturdy support of steel coils. The WinkBed mattress comes in three different firmness options, as well as a Plus model made for sleepers over 230 pounds. We tried out the mid-range Luxury Firm model and rated it at 6.5/10, a true medium-firm feel.
Why the WinkBed Stands Out
During testing, our mattress experts appreciated the WinkBedโs โon-top-of-the-mattressโ feel. โIt is somehow firm with a light touch,โ said average-weight tester Sosha Lewis, who loved the mattress on her back. โIโve never even slept on my back, but it feels really good on the WinkBed.โ
Our chief medical product tester and licensed physical therapist, Dr. Hannah Habeeb, agreed with Sosha, also finding that position the most comfortable. But she also added that the WinkBedโs balanced feel offered the perfect setup for those with back pain. โIt makes you feel very neutral and supports the spine while still providing some slight cushioning,โ she said. โI think people with back pain can enjoy the support system that keeps the spine very straight.โ
The edges of the WinkBed also possess the same sturdy feel. Mattress tester Melanie Kassel was able to sit on the edge of the mattress without sinking, but lying down is where she felt really secure. โThe WinkBed had really stellar edge support in all three sleeping positions,โ she said. โIf my eyes had been closed, I would not have been able to tell you I was near the edge.โ
Where the WinkBed Falls Short
Unfortunately, Melanie didnโt have the same spectacular experience during the response test. โI thought the WinkBed would be bouncier, given its status as a high-quality hybrid,โ she said. โIt doesnโt trap me or leave me sunken into the surface, but itโs a lot less responsive than I expected.โ She believed the pillow top was a bit too thick and plush, which may have dampened the effect of the springs below.

It also earned three perfect scores in the edge support, response, and customer service categories. Where Saatva really excels is its policies; the Classic comes with a 365-night sleep trial, a lifetime warranty, and free white glove delivery.
Why the Saatva Stands Out
I rated the Saatva Classic at a 7/10 on our scale, which is just a bit firmer than your typical medium-firm. While I donโt often deal with back pain, I canโt say Iโve ever woken up on the Saatva with many aches and pains. Mattress Clarityโs chief medical product tester, Dr. Hannah Habeeb, thought the mattress had โenough support to keep the spine aligned,โ but cautioned against some folks finding it too soft if theyโre of a larger size.
But that wasnโt a problem for our heavyweight tester, who loved this mattress on his side and back. On his side, he noted, โI actually physically felt the pressure relief on my lower back, which is rare.โ Back sleeping seemed to be even better. โOn my back, I immediately felt the alignment,โ he said. โIt feels like a stretch when you havenโt stretched in a while.โ Based on these results, the Saatva Classic unsurprisingly earned a 4.5/5 for pressure relief overall.
Aside from how comfy it feels, my second favorite thing about the Saatva Classic is its bounce. Iโm a particularly rowdy combination sleeper and often wake up upside down on the other side of the bed. The Saatva launches you across the mattress like youโre on the moon. When coupled with its sturdy edge support, combination sleepers or sexually active couples will love this mattress because itโs so easy to move around without fear of falling off the bed.
Where the Saatva Falls Short
Where the Saatva drops the ball for me is in motion isolation. Iโm a pretty light sleeper, so I usually judge this area quite harshly, but itโs also something my fellow tester noted in the studio immediately. The bouncy nature of this bed seems to amplify movement rather than stifle it. I can feel when my bedmate so much as breathes wrong, let alone tosses and turns. If you want to sleep soundly without interruption, check out the Nolah Evolutionโthis mattress earned a perfect score for motion isolation.

Back sleepers require a balanced sleep surface, and thatโs just what the Leesa Sapira Chill provides. This American-made hybrid mattress has zoned support in its coil unit, providing more lift in the center to contour to the lower back in this sleeping position. Below average. Though itโs a hybrid mattress, the Leesa Sapira Chill has a doughy pillow top that makes it harder to move around on.
The Medium-Firm model of Leesa Sapira Chill came in at a 6/10 in our studio, which is a touch softer than advertised. It still provided plenty of support for our back-sleeping testers. During testing, one of our heavyweight testers was most impressed by the pressure relief in this position.
Why the Leesa Sapira Chill Stands Out
The Leesa Sapira Chill earned high marks for the side-sleeping position. Our heavyweight tester called it โspinalicious,โ adding, โI feel relief in my shoulder, which is usually a pain point for meโI usually donโt feel a lot of pressure relief there.โ
Dr. Hannah Habeeb, our chief medical product tester, also praised the Sapira Chillโs performance for back sleeping. โItโs a bit softer, so you do sink in a little on your back, but I donโt feel like Iโm bottoming out,โ said Dr. Habeeb. โThat said, heavier sleepers may not be able to stay in a very neutral position on this mattress. However, other sleepers should be very comfortable.โ
And if you switch between back sleeping and another position, it should be relatively easy on the Leesa Sapira Chill. While my colleague Melanie Kassel noticed a bit of pushback from the pillow topโs contoured shape, she was able to move around with only a bit of effort. With a response score of 4/5, it might be a good choice for combination sleepers who still love a mattress they can sink into. Hot sleepers will also appreciate the breathable, cool-to-the-touch cover swaddling them.
Where the Leesa Sapira Chill Falls Short
Unfortunately, sharing the bed on the Leesa Sapira Chill could pose a problem. Melanie tested this mattress out with a fellow tester to see if she could feel their movements from the other side of the bed. The pillow top did its best to absorb motion, but she could ultimately sense her company. โI felt the most movement when the other tester switched positions next to meโmy own body moved side to side a bit when that happened,โ she said.

The Signature Hybrid is a simple but sweet bed. It performed well in our tests, earning a 4/5 or higher in many categories, with a highlight in pressure relief (4.8/5). The mattress also comes with a 120-night trial and lifetime warranty.
Our team tested the mid-range Medium model of this mattress and rated it 6.5/10 on our firmness scale. The Signature Hybrid is a little firmer than true medium-firm, thanks to the bedโs more lifted feel.
Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Stands Out
During testing, pressure relief was the primary reason for praise, leading to a rating of 4.8/5 for this category. โI think this bed is a great match for side sleepers,โ our in-house tester said. โThereโs enough cushioning to cradle the hip and shoulder joints without being too plush.โ
The Signature Hybridโs firmer feel also gave it a leg up for the edge support test. Our testers were able to cycle through each sleeping position and feel comfortable and secure in each, so thereโll be no sliding or slipping off the bed.
โI felt secure sleeping near the edge,โ said one tester. โI didnโt feel like I was going to roll off. I felt like I was tilting maybe a tiny bit towards the edge of the bed, but this went away once I scooted an inch or two inwards.โ
Based on their experience, I recommend it to older adults or those with mobility concerns.
Where the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Falls Short
The only area where the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid faltered was cooling. Our experts gave it a 3.5/5 in this category, meaning its performance is about average, but nothing mind-blowing. During testing, we used a thermal gun to measure its surface temperature before and after lying on it for seven minutes. After lying in one place for 7 minutes, our in-house team found a surprising 9.2-degree temperature increase.
โDespite its higher-than-average temperature increase, I thought this mattress had a very nice initial coolness to it,โ one tester said. โThe cover is smooth and sleek, and I really like how I can feel the cooling effects, even through my sweatshirt. As I lay there, I felt myself warming up ever so slightly, but I never felt overly warm or uncomfortable.โ

Why the Bear Elite Hybrid Stands Out
Along with a supportive, highly responsive coil layer, the plush pillow top provides ample pressure relief for sleepers of various body types, making it a versatile choice for many. With three different firmness options, you and your partner can also customize the Bear Elite to your specific needs.
We tested the medium model of the Bear Elite Hybrid and rated it 6/10 on our firmness scale, which is a bit softer than a true medium-firm mattress. The plush top allows for a bit of sink and contouring, but youโre still supported by the coils.
It lends itself to a very balanced feel, especially while sleeping on your back, earning it a 4.3/5 for pressure relief.
โThis mattress is really comfortable on my side,โ said chief medical product tester, Dr. Hannah Habeeb. โNothing is hurting, and thereโs no pressure. My hips and shoulders are sinking in nicely. It fits your body really well. My spine feels neutral and comfortable.โ
Even with the slight sinkage from the pillow top, the Bear Elite proves very responsive, so we rate the response a perfect 5/5. Combination sleepers will find this easy to shift around on, no matter if youโre sleeping on your side, stomach, or back. โThe bouncy core of the mattress made it a breeze to launch myself in and out of bed or roll around,โ added another in-house tester.
Where the Bear Elite Hybrid Falls Short
The one category in which the Bear Elite Hybrid scored below-average was cooling. After lying on the mattress for a few minutes, our tester measured a 12.6-degree temperature rise with the thermal gun. She didnโt notice the temperature change while on the mattress, but she also added that she typically isnโt a hot sleeper. Couples who tend to sleep hot may need an option with better cooling features, such as the Nolah Evolution.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.
The Titan Plus Core is a hybrid mattress. This means it has coils at the bottom and foam on top.
Firmness
The Titan Plus Core mattress is firm. On a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest, we rated it a 7.5/10.

The Titan Plus Core mattress works well for many heavyweight back and stomach sleepers. Itโs quite firm, coming in at 9/10 on our firmness scale. This means that many side sleepers wonโt get the pressure relief they need along their shoulders and hips.
Sleepers over 230 pounds need a bed thatโs built to support them, and thatโs exactly where the Titan Plus Core comes in. This is another mattress from Brooklyn Bedding, a USA-manufactured mattress brand, and it was designed specifically for plus-size sleepers.

Our testers found this mattress to have a firmer feel, ending up at a 7.5/10 on our firmness scale.
Why the Titan Plus Core Stands Out
While our lightweight and average-weight testers had trouble finding pressure relief on this bed, Dr. Hannah Habeeb, an average-weight tester herself, found it plenty comfortable despite the lack of super-soft foams. โOn my side, I donโt feel pressure on my hip or shoulder,โ she said. โLying on your back, thereโs just the right amount of sinkage to cushion the lower back and fill in any gapping.โ
Our heavyweight tester found alignment on both his side and back, but enjoyed more pressure relief in the latter position. โIt feels more pressure-relieving on my back than my side,โ he said. โIt feels like itโs contouring my back better than it did on my side, too.โ
Regardless of which sleeping position you prefer, or if you prefer multiple, switching between them should be a breeze. One tester found that the highly responsive Titan mattress essentially turned into a springboard whenever she needed to move around, making it incredibly easy to get in and out of the bed and flip into various sleeping positions.
And if you often sit or sleep on the edge of the mattress, thereโs more good news. Our in-house tester felt secure in both instances. โNo matter how close I got to the edge of the bedโeven when I dangled off the side to reach my phone on the floorโthe bed supported me with no dipping or sagging,โ she said. Getting in and out of bed was also made easy by the combination of solid support and springy response, which can benefit folks who require mobility assistance.
Where the Titan Plus Core Falls Short
The Titan Plus Core has many wins for plus-size sleepers, but those who sleep extra-hot may encounter an issue with this bed. While our tester found the mattress didnโt heat up while she was lying on it, our thermal gun had different thoughts. After napping on the bed for about seven minutes, she noticed that the surface temperature went up by a whopping 10.2 degrees, well above our 7.1-degree average.
That said, our tester still recommended it for the typical hot sleeper, but if youโre particularly worried about night sweats like myself, you might want to opt for a cooler bed like the Leesa Sapira Chill mattress.
Didnโt find what you were looking for in the list above? Here are some other beds we love that are also made in the USA:
Plank Firm โ The Plank Firm mattress is manufactured by Brooklyn Bedding, which makes all of its mattresses in its Arizona factory. This flippable all-foam bed brings excellent support to the table, offering maximum lift for stomach sleepers and those over 230 pounds. Itโs usually our top pick for the best firm mattress. However, even for firm mattress lovers, the Plank may be too extreme. For context, the โsoftโ side comes in at 8/10 on our firmness scale, and the firm side at 9/10.
DLX Classic โ DLX has been handcrafting mattresses in the US since the 19th century, based out of New Jersey. The Classic mattress is a two-sided bed that comes in three firmness options. This neat trick gives it added longevityโsimply flip it to keep away body indentations. As a hybrid, though, it has a super-bouncy feel, which seemed to amplify motion across the bed in our couples test.
How We Tested the Mattresses Made in the USA
To find the best mattresses made in the USA, we obviously started with mattresses manufactured in the United States. This automatically cut out a lot of the competition. We also looked at how each bed performed in our testing, seeking out high performance and customer service scores to back up the U.S.-made label.
Hereโs a bit more about the factors we focused on for this article:
American-Made
All of the brands on this list proudly advertise U.S.-based factories on their site. I will note that this doesnโt always mean every material within the mattress is also USA-made or sourced, but you can rest assured that the final product is always designed and assembled on American soil.
Mattresses made in the USA have to go through a stricter process than beds made in other countries to ensure there arenโt harmful chemicals (such as formaldehyde or heavy metals) used in their construction or during the manufacturing process. Many beds made in the USA are also fiberglass-free, for example. Many also boast certifications such as GREENGUARD GOLD or are CertiPur-US Certified for lower volatile organic compound (VOC) emissionsโalthough weโd consider some of these the bare minimum for a high-quality, safe mattress.
Read more about what we think of each certification if you want to be certain youโre getting a truly sustainable or eco-friendly mattress.
Versatile Performance
As youโve likely noticed, our testing methodology encompasses several mattress performance features. Shoppers seeking a USA-made mattress come in all shapes, sizes, and preferences, so we didnโt want to narrow the field too far. Thatโs why we looked for mattresses that generally scored well across the board. We didnโt want one-trick ponies on this list, so youโll notice that every bed here scores 4 or higher in at least two or three performance categories.
Firmness
You might also notice that these beds fall around a similar firmness spectrum (unless they come in multiple firmness levels). Many sleepers consider medium-firm mattresses (about a 6.5 out of 10 on our scale) ideal for balancing pressure relief and spinal alignment and preventing pain and discomfort.
Some beds skew slightly softer or firmer depending on who we recommend them for, but this overall versatility allows them to accommodate a wide range of sleepers.
Edge Support
Edge support refers to how sturdy a mattress feels around its perimeter. Strong edges make it easier to sit, stand, and sleep near the side without feeling like you might slide off.
To assess this, our testers sit and move along the edge to observe sinkage and stability. We then lie near the perimeter in different sleeping positions to assess security. Finally, we use weighted plates to measure edge compression under pressure. Less sinkage (typically under 5 inches) indicates more reliable support.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief refers to how effectively a mattress cushions the body and reduces tension in sensitive areas like the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
We evaluate this using both hands-on testing and specialized technology. Multiple testers of different body types and sleep preferences assess how well the mattress cradles their joints.
We also use a pressure-mapping mat that creates a color-coded image of where pressure builds. Cooler colors (blue and green) on the map indicate better relief, while warmer tones (yellow and red) suggest more strain. The system also measures PSI, providing us with a numerical representation of how evenly the mattress distributes weight across its surface.
Company Policies
Many USA-made mattress brands sweeten the deal even further with generous policies. You might see waived fees or even free white glove delivery, as is the case with Saatva.
Since all of these mattresses are sold online, sleep trials are a common add-on. These allow you to try out the mattress at home for a period of time. If you decide the mattress isnโt for you, you can get a full refund so long as you initiate a return during this trial period. Trial periods can last anywhere from a month to multiple months to a full year. We include the trial period in our customer service score, with a full year-long trial earning a 5/5 score.
We also like to look at the warranty a mattress comes with. A typical mattress will last you anywhere from seven to ten years, so most warranties fall around the 10-year mark. However, some brands are more generous, offering 15-year warranties, 25-year warranties, or even those that last a lifetime. A lifetime warranty without any limitations earns a 5/5 score from us. Be sure to read the fine print, however, to make sure you donโt accidentally void it.
Long sleep trials and warranties speak to a confidence in the product. The brand gives you plenty of time to get a return on your investment, assuming youโll fall in love with the mattress long before you consider returning it or encountering a defect. This is why we consider long warranties a sign of durability, which is also a plus for buying a new mattress.
What Else Is Important When Buying a USA-Made Mattress?
Mattresses are as variable as snowflakes. If youโre still struggling to make a final decision, here are some of the most common considerations that shoppers often overlook.
Type of Mattress
The type of mattress that you buy can determine a number of performance factors, as well as the overall feel of the bed. Some are better suited to certain sleep styles than others.
Foam Mattress
This mattress type is made up of layers of foam, whether that be traditional memory foam or other synthetic foams. The result is a bed thatโs cushy, pressure-relieving, and often slow-moving. These are great beds for couples as they tend to excel in isolating motion. Theyโre also often more affordable options. However, they can be more prone to sagging, and the dense nature of foam may trap too much heat for hot sleepers.
Innerspring Mattress
This is the most traditional mattress type. The bulk of innerspring mattresses are made up of an interconnected coil layer. This gives the bed a springy, super-supportive feel. The coils also allow for plenty of airflow throughout the bed, which can make them fine cooling mattresses. Comfort layers on this mattress are rather thin, though, so theyโre not the best beds for pressure relief or deep contouring.
Hybrid Mattress
This mattress type features a coil layer and thick comfort layers. Unlike innerspring beds, these usually feature individually wrapped coils which are often encased in fabric pockets to move independently of one another. This allows for the same bounce but less motion transfer. The feel of these beds can differ greatly between models because of their variable construction. Comfort layers can be made of foam, latex, wool, etc. This can drive up the price, so some hybrids may not be the best for budget shoppers.
Latex Mattress
This final mattress type includes the natural material latex, which is derived from rubber trees, and prized for its sustainability. Latex gives beds a uniquely buoyant feel. It can also offer pressure relief like memory foam, but it may not have the same level of super-sinkage. However, it runs cooler than foam. Latex beds are a popular choice for the eco-conscious shopper, as well as those with allergies. Their organic nature does mean a higher price point, though.
Sleeping Position and Body Type
Weโve tried to drive home the point that medium-firm beds are a great place to start. However, per Dr. Raj Dasgupta, โthe ideal firmness for your needs will depend on your sleeping position as well as your body weight.โ
Side sleepersmay need a softer mattress for better sinkage around their hips and shoulders, as well as relief around these pressure points. They might also like a bed with contouring memory foam or latex.
Back sleeperscan do well on a medium or medium-firm mattress, so long as it offers the right balance of softness and support. Look for a bed that fills in the gap at your lower back.
Stomach sleepersshould have a mattress thatโs firm enough to support them and keep their hips from sinking out of alignment. They might prefer a firm or even extra-firm mattress.
If you switch between two or all of these positions, youโre something called a combination sleeper. These sleepers may want a responsive mattress that makes moving around on the surface of the bed easier to do so, such as one with coils and latex.
How much you weigh can also affect how supportive or firm a mattress feels to you, so you may want to adjust accordingly. Lightweight sleepers may find it hard to sink into the surface of a mattress, and therefore might experience beds as firmer than expected. They may want to go for something softer. On the flipside, sleepers over 230 pounds may sink further into beds than expected. They might want a firmer mattress for better support so they donโt โbottom outโ on the support layers.
It can be difficult to take all this into account when purchasing a mattress, but doing so will ensure you get better sleep from your new mattress.
Price
Buying an American-made mattress can help keep costs low, but mattresses are still a big investment. They can cost anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars, depending on if youโre looking at budget options or luxury mattresses.
To find out if a mattress is worth the money, I always first recommend taking a look at any user reviews on and off the brandโs site. Donโt be afraid to take full advantage of the brandโs sleep trial to get a feel for how the bed will perform long-term. I also recommend purchasing sleep products around major retail holidays like Labor Day, July 4th, or Black Friday.
For the beds we chose, though, you can rest assured that all have been vetted for quality and comfort. All should offer plenty of bang for their buck.
Our pick for the best mattress made in the USA is the Helix Midnight, a medium-firm hybrid that has a balanced feel, offering both support and softness. But the best mattress for your needs may look a little different. Thankfully, all of the beds above are made in the USA, and any of them could be your new favorite.
Which mattress brands are made in the USA?
Some of the most common domestic brands are Serta, Sealy, and Tempur-Pedic, which are popular in-store mattress options. Youโll notice that this list includes more online mattress brands that specialize in bed-in-a-box mattresses.
Are Saatva mattresses made in the USA?
Yes, all Saatva mattresses are made in factories located within the USA.
