Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress Review

Helix sells six different hybrid mattresses in a wide range of firmness levels. Each of these six mattresses are available in the Core, Luxe and Elite lines. If you’re unsure which mattress is best, you can always take Helix’s mattress quiz. After answering a few easy questions about your sleeping position and body type, Helix will match you to the ideal mattress.

The Helix Dusk Luxe is one of the brand’s medium-firm options and, like the rest of the Helix Luxe line, it features luxury materials that are both comfortable and supportive.

Pros of the Helix Dusk Luxe

  • The Helix Dusk Luxe is great for people who tend to overheat at night, because the coils promote airflow. You also have the option to upgrade and get the cooling GlacioTex™ cover.
  • This mattress has zoned support, which means it feels firmer in the center of the mattress and softer near the head and the foot. This is particularly helpful for people who deal with back pain.
  • It’s a luxurious mattress that’s particularly durable. The Helix Dusk Luxe is 2″ taller than the Core model, and it contains a premium pillow top.

Cons of the Helix Dusk Luxe

  • Fans of very firm or very soft mattresses won’t like the Helix Dusk Luxe.
  • Side sleepers may not get enough pressure relief on the Helix Dusk Luxe and may want to consider the Helix Sunset Luxe instead.
  • It’s not the most affordable mattress on the market, because it contains high-quality and luxurious materials.

Helix Dusk Luxe Firmness and Feel

When you’re shopping for a new mattress, it’s always good to consider firmness and feel. This will give you a good idea of whether or not a mattress will work for you.

How Firm Is The Helix Dusk Luxe?

On a firmness scale of 1-10, the Helix Dusk Luxe scored a 6.5/10, which is the industry standard for medium-firm. The top pillow top and foams offer a good bit of comfort, while the coils feel firmer and more supportive.

Sleeping On The Helix Dusk Luxe

Back sleeping on the Helix Dusk Luxe was a dream. Medium-firm mattresses are usually a great match for back sleepers, and the Helix Dusk Luxe was no exception. I felt great lumbar support, and my hips sank in just the right amount. This should be a great mattress for back sleepers.

Side sleeping, I felt decent pressure relief on the Helix Dusk Luxe. The pillow top cushioned my shoulders and hips, and I did not ‘bottom out’ on the mattress. That said, if you just sleep on your side, take a look at the Helix Sunset Luxe and Helix Moonlight Luxe, the two softest models, as they provide more cushioning for the hips and shoulders.

When I slept on my stomach, I didn’t get enough hip support. I could feel my center mass dipping into the mattress, and this put some strain in my lower back. If you want a mattress for stomach sleepers, consider the Helix Dawn Luxe or Helix Twilight Luxe, the two firmest Luxe models.

What Does The Helix Dusk Luxe Feel Like?

The Helix Dusk Luxe has a responsive hybrid feel. The coils and responsive foam layers make the mattress feel particularly bouncy, which makes it easy to move around and change positions.

You also get some of that soft pillow top feel right on top of the mattress. This lets you sink in a bit, but you won’t feel stuck.

Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress Construction

Let’s see exactly what’s inside the Helix Dusk Luxe mattress.

Cover

The Helix Dusk Luxe has two available covers. You can choose the standard Tencel cover, which feels breathable and soft. You can also upgrade to the GlacioTex™ cooling cover for an $250. This proprietary material feels cool to the touch and helps draw heat away from the body.

Comfort Layers

The Helix Dusk Luxe has a pillow top as its main comfort layer, which feels plush and comfortable. The next layer is made with Helix Responsive Foam, a bouncy foam with a medium feel. It is responsive and makes it easy to move around on the mattress. It rests on a layer of Helix Dynamic Foam, which is also bouncy and medium-firm. Below that, there is a layer of Memory Plus Foam, which adds some softer comfort to the top layers. It also has a bit of that classic memory foam feel.

Support Layers

The Helix Dusk Luxe has supportive, pocketed coils in its support layer. The coils are zoned so that the center of the mattress is firmer than the rest of the mattress. This is meant to provide additional lumbar support and keep your spine neutrally aligned.

The coil layer rests on a thin base layer of Helix’s DuraDense foam. This supports the layers above and prevents the coils from poking into your foundation or bed frame.

Mattress Height

The Helix Dusk Luxe is 14” tall, which is 2″ taller than the Core model.

Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress Performance

I tested the Helix Dusk Luxe’s cooling features, motion transfer, edge support and more. Let’s see how it did.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

If you are a hot sleeper, the Helix Dusk Luxe could be a good choice. I reviewed the model with the cooling cover, and it is truly cool to the touch. I could feel it keeping me cool during the night. The coils also allow for a good deal of airflow, so the Dusk Luxe shouldn’t trap heat deeper in the mattress.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer occurs when a sleeping partner moves around one side of the mattress and disturbs their partner on the other side of the mattress. This is a major issue for couples, but some mattresses cut down on motion transfer quite well.

During my tests, the Helix Dusk Luxe isolated motion very well. When my coworker moved around on the other side of the mattress, I did not feel his movements on my side of the bed. If you need one of the best mattresses for couples, consider the Helix Dusk Luxe.

Edge Support

Edge support is also important for couples to consider. If your mattress has good edge support, you and your partner will be able to sleep toward the edges of the mattress. This will give you and your partner the most room to stretch out and utilize the full surface area of the mattress.

The Helix Dusk Luxe has excellent edge support, and I felt very secure while sitting and lying down near the edge. You and your partner should be able to sleep comfortably near the edges of the Helix Dusk Luxe.

Durability

When you buy a new mattress, you’ll want to make sure it’s going to last for a good amount of time. You’re spending hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars, and you don’t want your mattress sagging or breaking down in just a few years.

The Helix Dusk Luxe is a very durable mattress. It features high-density foams, supportive coils and an overall luxurious design. Based on this, I would say the mattress will last for at least 10 years.

Off-gassing

Off-gassing is a common occurrence with bed-in-a-box mattresses. When you unbox most bed-in-a-box mattresses, they will initially emit a slight chemical smell. This is completely normal.

I experienced some off-gassing when I unboxed the Helix Dusk Luxe, but the smell completely went away after 48 hours. Just make sure to leave the mattress in a ventilated room, and your new Helix mattress will be ready to go after two days.

Noise

A noisy mattress can be another distraction for sleeping partners. If your bed creaks and squeaks, you could be disturbed and wake up.

When I moved around on the Helix Dusk Luxe, it made no real noise. I changed positions and rolled around and didn’t hear anything. Just note that hybrid mattresses might start to squeak after you use them for a number of years.

Sex

If you and your partner want a good mattress for sex, a hybrid is usually going to be a good fit. Hybrid mattresses are bouncy and make it easy for you to move around and change positions. The Helix Dusk Luxe is indeed bouncy and should be a good mattress for sexual partners.

If you’ve narrowed down your choice to the Helix Dusk, you now need to decide between the Standard Helix and Luxe models. There are some major differences that should make it easy to choose.

A cross-section of the Helix Dusk

The Helix Dusk Luxe features a plush pillow top, but the Helix Dusk does not. This gives the Helix Dusk Luxe a plusher feel than the Helix Dusk. The coils are also zoned in the Dusk Luxe, but not in the Dusk. You get a lot more with the Dusk Luxe, so it does cost significantly more than the Dusk.

Final Thoughts

The Helix Dusk Luxe mattress is a high-end hybrid mattress with a medium-firm feel. It has zoned support, which means the center of the mattress feels firmer than the rest of the bed. This can be beneficial for people with back pain, because it helps people maintain the proper spinal alignment. The Helix Dusk Luxe mattress works well for average weight back and side sleepers, but it’s not supportive enough for heavy people.
