GhostBed Mattress Topper Review

If you love the feeling of slow-moving memory foam, the GhostBed topper might be a good choice for you. This mattress topper, made with CertiPUR-US® certified foam, is not only high quality—it offers lots of pressure relief, too.

That said, this topper may not meet everyone’s sleep needs. I personally tested the GhostBed mattress topper and assessed its comfort, pressure relief, ease of use, price point and more. Read my full GhostBed mattress topper review for the full scoop.

GhostBed Mattress Topper Firmness & Feel

Mattress Clarity’s firmness scale ranges from 1-10, with 6.5/10 representing the industry standard for medium-firm. When we test mattress toppers, we don’t assess the product’s firmness level on its own. Instead, we measure how much it changes the firmness and feel of an existing mattress.

What’s the GhostBed Topper’s Firmness?

The GhostBed mattress topper feels quite plush. When I placed it on top of a medium-firm mattress (6.5/10 on our firmness scale), it made the bed feel 1.5 points softer. The Ghostbed topper could be beneficial for people who rest on particularly firm mattresses, but if you need more support, you may want to consider getting one of the best firm mattress toppers

What does the GhostBed Topper Feel Like?

The GhostBed mattress topper has a traditional slow-moving memory foam feel. When I rested on top of it, I felt my body sink into the thick foam layer. It’s a bit difficult to move around on top of this mattress topper, so if you prefer a more responsive feel, you may want to get the Saatva latex mattress topper instead.

Sleeping on the GhostBed Topper

When I rested on my back, the GhostBed mattress topper conformed to my hips and hugged my lower back. Because I placed this topper on a medium-firm mattress, I didn’t get the spinal support that I needed. If you place this topper on a firmer mattress, it could be a good match for most back sleepers.

The GhostBed mattress topper works really well for side sleepers. The thick 3” layer of memory foam cushions shoulders and hips and offers plenty of pressure relief.

I wouldn’t recommend this topper for stomach sleepers. This plush topper will soften your mattress by 1.5 points, which could cause your hips to sink out of alignment when you’re on your stomach. This can lead to lower back pain over time. For some better options, take a look at our list of the best mattress toppers for stomach sleepers

30-60 Min Nap

One of the perks of being a professional mattress and accessories tester is that I get to take naps on all of the products I review. I’m a combination sleeper, so when I slept on the GhostBed topper, I switched between my back and my side. I woke up once when I was on my back because I felt like the foam was a little too soft and I needed more support. When I rested on my side, I felt very comfortable.

The thick foam layers cradled my pressure points and didn’t create any joint pain. It was a bit difficult for me to switch sleeping positions because the thick foam has a slow-moving feel. If you want something that feels more responsive, you may want to consider the Avocado Latex mattress topper.

Even though the Ghostbed topper has a cooling cover and gel-infused memory foam, I still felt a little hot and stuffy during my nap. I sank into the 3” foam layer quite a bit, which trapped some body heat. If you’re a particularly hot sleeper, like myself, you may want to take a look at our list of the best cooling mattress toppers

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

The GhostBed topper works well for most average weight back and side sleepers, especially if they currently rest on a firm mattress. The thick foam layer offers an extra boost of pressure relief, which could be beneficial for people who rest in these sleeping positions.

This topper isn’t a great choice for average weight stomach sleepers. In this sleeping position, people will likely feel their hips sink out of alignment. This can put extra pressure on the lower back and cause pain down the line.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavier people will compress the GhostBed topper quite a bit, so it may not feel as soft to people in this weight category. For that reason, the GhostBed topper could work well for back and side sleepers who weigh more than 230 lb. However, if you need a significant amount of pressure relief, you may want to get a topper that’s more dense, like the Saatva graphite

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lb

Lightweight back and side sleepers should feel comfortable on the GhostBed mattress topper, if they currently rest on a firm mattress. Lightweight stomach sleepers will need a thinner topper, such as the Helix. The GhostBed topper is too plush for stomach sleeping and could cause back pain.

GhostBed Topper Construction

Now, let’s see what this topper is made out of. Here’s a closer look at its construction:

Cover

The GhostBed topper comes with a machine-washable cover that stretches over the entire mattress. The outer fabric is waterproof, and it has a 2” elastic band around the corners. When I placed the cover over the topper and the mattress and rolled around on top of the bed a few times, I was happy to see that the cover and topper stayed firmly in place.

GhostBed Topper Cover

Comfort Layer

The topper itself is made from a 3” layer of memory foam. The topper has five zones with different textures and patterns. This is meant to offer targeted support where sleepers need it most. I could feel a difference between the sections when I rested on the topper itself, but when I placed the cover around it, the sections felt more subtle.

GhostBed Topper

The memory foam is infused with gel, which is meant to help dissipate body heat. In my experience, the gel infusion isn’t particularly helpful. If you tend to run hot at night, you may want to look elsewhere.

One perk about the GhostBed topper is that it’s CertiPUR-US® certified, which means it’s made without the use of harmful chemicals.

Topper Height

The GhostBed mattress topper is 3” tall.

GhostBed Topper Performance

I don’t just take naps on the products I review—I also run them through a number of tests to assess cooling, durability and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Even though the GhostBed topper is marketed as a cooling product, I wouldn’t recommend it for people who run hot at night. The gel-infusion doesn’t dissipate body heat as well as many other toppers I’ve tried, and because it’s made with a thick piece of memory foam, sleepers will sink into the material and trap body heat around them.

Durability

If you keep the cover around the topper at all times, as the product is intended, I expect the GhostBed topper to last about three years. Please note: If you decide to sleep directly on top of the foam, you might tear the material.

Off-Gassing

“Off-gassing” is the mattress industry term for the chemical smell often emitted after unboxing a bed-in-a-box mattress. Because the GhostBed topper is also compressed into a cardboard box, it does have a short off-gassing period. It took about two days for the smell to fade away.

Cleaning

The outer cover is machine-washable. For the best results, wash it on the gentle cycle in cool water. You can tumble dry it on low.

The topper itself can be spot cleaned with warm water and mild detergent, but it should not be completely submerged in water.

Allergens

The GhostBed topper’s cover is hypoallergenic, so as long as you use the product as intended, it should not trigger an allergic reaction.

Company Policies

It’s always a good idea to understand the company policies before buying a new bedding product. Here’s what you can expect if you order from GhostBed:

Warranty

The GhostBed mattress topper is backed by a five-year warranty

Sleep Trial

GhostBed does not offer sleep trial periods for their accessories, including the GhostBed topper.

Return Policy

The GhostBed mattress topper is not returnable.

How Does the GhostBed Topper Compare to Other Toppers?

There are so many options when it comes to mattress toppers. Before making a final purchasing decision, it’s important to see how the GhostBed topper compares to others.

GhostBed vs Saatva

Saatva makes one of the most luxurious mattress toppers on the market. There are several different options to choose from, including the latex topper and micro coil topper. For this comparison, I’ll focus specifically on the Saatva graphite. This topper fuses memory foam and graphite, which helps keep sleepers cool at night. It has an organic cotton cover and it softens mattresses by 2.5 points

Saatva mattress topper

While the GhostBed topper has a removable and machine-washable cover, the Saatva graphite does not. However, the Saatva graphite contains high-quality materials and strong corner straps, so I expect it to last longer than the GhostBed topper.

GhostBed vs Nolah

Instead of traditional memory foam, the Nolah mattress topper contains AirFoam. This responsive material is special to Nolah, and it has tiny air holes throughout that makes it feel particularly breathable and cool.

A man rests on his back while on top of the Nolah Mattress Topper.

The Nolah mattress topper is available in two firmness levels: Plush and Luxury Fim. I tested the Plush version and found that it softens mattresses by two points. If you’re a hot sleeper who needs a bit more pressure relief, the Nolah topper might be the best option.

FAQs

What’s the best mattress topper?

Like many things in the bedding industry, “best” is subjective. If you’re a hot sleeper, you may need a cooling mattress topper. Stomach sleepers will need more support and should consider getting a firm mattress topper.

How long will the GhostBed topper last?

Because the GhostBed topper is made with thick memory foam and a durable cover, I expect it to last about three years. This is about one year longer than most budget-friendly mattress toppers.

What if I don’t like my GhostBed topper?

The GhostBed mattress topper is not returnable, so if you don’t like it, you may need to donate it or throw it away.
