30-60 Min Nap With the Nectar Serenity Weighted Blanket

As a hot sleeper, weighted blankets are something I really only need or prefer to use during the cold winter months. So, here in Texas anyway, I only really need them from about the end of December to late February. But blankets like the Serenity weighted blanket might be a good choice for those who want something year round.

Even with a double sided cover, some might be skeptical if the cooling side actually works. Let’s face it: weighted blankets are going to add some warmth. But when I pulled the cooling side of the blanket up against my skin, and waited about 10 minutes for my body temperature to even out, I felt quite comfortable.

Yes, I noticed some added warmth, but the blanket never felt uncomfortable or like I was going to overheat with it. This is a huge plus for me because I tend to run pretty hot and will kick off layers if they’re making me too hot.

Flipping the blanket around, I was curious to see how warm the warming side would feel. For me, there was a noticeable difference. I think if I were testing this blanket in the middle of the summer, I wouldn’t have been able to keep the warming side on me for long. But it was a cool, gray, wet day outside when I tested this side. So the warm side of the blanket was actually quite welcome.

How Much Does the Nectar Serenity Weighted Blanket Weigh?

For this review, I received a large size (80” x 87”) 25 lb Serenity weighted blanket. This blanket is offered in three different weight options–15, 20, and 25 lb–and two sizes–standard and large. The standard is your typical throw-size while the large is roughly a king-size blanket.

If you’re not sure which weight option is the best for you, the general rule of thumb is something I like to call the “10% rule.” When looking through weight options, a good place to start is taking 10% of your body weight (divide your body weight by 10). This number, give or take a pound or two, should help guide you to select a weight option that works for you.

RELATED: Weighted Blanket Calculator

To put it into practice, if you weigh around 220 lb, 10% of that is 22 lb. So picking a 20 lb or 25 lb weighted blanket is what you should look for. Now, this is just a suggestion. Ultimately, what weight feels good will vary from person to person. But a simple way to select a weight is starting with the 10% rule.

How Does the Nectar Serenity Weighted Blanket Feel?

Weighted blankets are going to have two distinct feels to them: what the texture feels like and how they feel while you’re using them. The Nectar Serenity weighted blanket has two different feelings thanks to its dual sided cover. The warming side is slightly fuzzy and minky while the cooling side is soft and smooth.

As for the weight, weighted blankets are known for “feeling like a hug,” which is why so many enjoy them. For me, the 25 lb option is a good choice because I’m a heavier guy around 280 lb. so I was able to really feel the weight all around me.

Nectar Serenity Weighted Blanket Performance

Let’s go over a few more key considerations for the Nectar Serenity weighted blanket.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

With a double-sided cover, the Serenity weighted blanket will sleep either relatively cool or cozy depending on which side you have on your skin.

During my testing, when I had the cooling side on me, I only noticed a slight amount of coziness from the blanket and after about 30 minutes, I didn’t notice any hot spots develop. Flipping it over to the warming side, I felt decently cozy and comfortable. I will say – when I tested this side of the blanket, it was a cool gray day outside. If this were in the middle of summer (and especially in Texas, where I live) I can see myself overheating with this side.

All this to say, both the cooling and warming sides should do what they are intended to do. So if you run hot, keep the cooling side on your body. If you’re someone who gets cold quickly, keep the warming side on you.

Care Instructions

There are two pieces to the Serenity weighted blanket: the weighted insert and the outer cover. Only the outer cover is machine-washable. Nectar doesn’t mention any specific instructions, but I would recommend washing the cover in a cold water cycle with a mild detergent. From there, tumble dry on low heat until fully dry.

Allergies/Allergens?

Nectar mentions that the outer cover of the Serenity blanket has antimicrobial properties. This is because of the bamboo side of the blanket, which is a naturally hypoallergenic material. The outer cover won’t attract allergens in your sleep environment, and it should prevent the growth or build up of mold.

And, as mentioned above, this outer cover is machine-washable, so you’ll be able to eliminate allergens or bacteria that do end up on the blanket.

Nectar Serenity Weighted Blanket Construction

There are only two main materials that make up the Serenity weighted blanket: bamboo rayon and polyester. The outer cover is double-sided: one side being intended for warming and one side intended for cooling.

The cooling side of the blanket is made from the bamboo rayon fabric. Bamboo is a good material for the cooling side because it’s a material that is both breathable and moisture-wicking. This just means you shouldn’t feel too hot and sweaty while this side of the blanket is on your skin.

The warming side and the cover of the weighted insert use 100% polyester fabric. The warming side of the cover feels slightly minky and fuzzy, which makes it ideal for the warming side to keep you nice and cozy. The weighted insert is sewn through in a square grid to keep the fill evenly distributed. The fill is made from tiny microbeads.

Company Policies

Let’s take a look at what company policies Nectar offers on purchases.

Warranty

Nectar offers an impressive five-year warranty on the Serenity weighted blanket. This warranty will cover defects from the manufacturing process or workmanship errors, and won’t cover general wear and tear or intentional damage to the blanket.

Trial Period

From the day the Serenity weighted blanket arrives on your doorstep, you’ll have 50 days to issue returns or exchanges.

Return Policy

If, during that 50-day trial period, you decide that the Nectar Serenity weighted blanket isn’t for you, you can issue a return or exchange. Nectar offers free shipping on all orders, and will also offer free shipping on returns as well.

How does Nectar Serenity Weighted Blanket Compare To Other Blankets

Not everyone will prefer a reversible weighted blanket like the Serenity blanket. So, let’s see how this blanket compares to two different blankets from Bearaby and Saatva.

Nectar vs Bearaby

Unlike Nectar, Bearaby is a company that makes nothing but weighted blankets that have a chunky knit design to them. Bearaby uses various fabrics, like cotton, TENCEL™, and velvet, but the unique thing about these blankets is that they don’t use glass beads to get their weight. The fabric is doubled up in thick ropes that are then each hand-knit into a blanket.

Sleeping with the Bearaby Tree Napper Weighted Blanket

Because of the knit design, any Bearaby blanket will work well for hot sleepers and even extremely hot sleepers because it can open up and let airflow through. The Nectar Serenity blanket is still a good choice for hot sleepers with its cooling side. But, if you’re the type of person who prefers a traditional blanket look and feel, and want something to keep you cozy and warm, the Serenity blanket is the way to go.

Nectar vs Saatva

The Nectar Serenity weighted blanket and the Saatva weighted blanket may look similar, but one only needs to flip over the Serenity weighted blanket to start seeing some differences. Both blankets have outer covers that have a soft, slightly fuzzy feeling to them. But Nectar’s blanket only has that on one side, whereas Saatva’s blanket has it all over.

Saatva weighted blanket

Because of this, the Saatva blanket is going to feel overall much warmer and cozier, making it ideal for cool climates or sleepers who get cold quickly. Hot sleepers should be able to enjoy the cooling side of the Nectar Serenity blanket in order to prevent overheating.

There’s also one more difference in the covers: Nectar’s is removable. If you notice the cover getting dirty or spill something on it, you can remove the cover and machine-wash it for easy care. Saatva’s blanket is recommended to be spot-clean only.

Nectar Serenity Weighted Blanket FAQs

Do weighted blankets boost melatonin?

It’s possible, yes. It’s been agreed by experts that weighted blankets seem to help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer. It does this by stimulating something called Deep Pressure Touch (DPT), which is that hugging sensation people get when they use weighted blankets.

One of the byproducts of DPT is the potential for an increased release of melatonin in your brain, which is how it helps you fall asleep faster.

How long will my Nectar Serenity weighted blanket last?

Around five years. With good care, this blanket should last the length of the five-year warranty Nectar provides for its blanket.

What if I don’t like my Nectar Serenity weighted blanket?

From the day the blanket arrives, you’ll have 50 days to make return or exchange decisions. Nectar offers free shipping on returns.
