Saatva vs Saatva Memory Foam Mattress Overview

Saatva is a mattress brand that really needs no introduction. For years, the brand has offered a line of high-quality luxury mattresses that ship right to your door. Saatva first found popularity with the Saatva Classic mattress, a traditional innerspring mattress featuring a luxurious pillow top. The brand quickly expanded to offer mattresses like the Saatva Latex Hybrid, Zenhaven, and Loom & Leaf.

Saatva now offers the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, a mattress with the support of coils and the soft comfort of memory foam. But, how does it stack up against the mattress that started it all?

Please note that I will be focusing on the Luxury Firm version of the Saatva Classic (it also comes in a Plush Soft and Firm version, which I’ll briefly describe below).

Who Should Choose the Saatva Classic? Who Should Choose the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid?

Similarities And Differences Between The Saatva And Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

Let’s take a look at the major differences between the Saatva and Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid.

Similarities Differences
Both feature coils with soft layers on top. The Saatva Classic comes in multiple firmness levels and heights.
Both come from Saatva and have the same warranty and sleep trial. They feature some different materials.
They are both breathable mattresses. The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is softer than the Saatva Classic in Luxury Firm.
They are both supportive mattresses. They have slightly different feels.
The Saatva Classic costs more.

Firmness and Feel Differences

Let’s take a look at how firm the two Saatva mattresses are and how that affects their performance for different sleeping positions.

How Firm Are The Saatva And Saatva Memory Foam?

The Saatva Classic is available in three firmnesses, but today we are focusing on the Luxury Firm, the most popular model. On a firmness scale of 1-10, the Saatva Classic scores a 7/10, just a bit firmer than average. The pillow top is very soft, but you will really feel the support of two sets of coils.

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is closer to a 6.5/10, which is exactly medium-firm. The combination of coils and soft memory foam provides a perfect balance of comfort and support.

Sleeping On the Saatva And Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

Saatva Classic

When I slept on my back on the Saatva mattress, I felt both comfort and support. The mattress’s zoning provided extra lumbar support, and my hips sank in just the right amount. Overall, the Saatva Luxury Firm is a great mattress for back sleepers and should prevent back pain.

man sleeping on his back on the Saatva mattress

Sleeping on my side, I felt some build up in pressure around my shoulders and hips. If you just sleep on your side, you might want to opt for the softer model of the Saatva.

Stomach sleeping, I experienced decent support under my hips, and I did not feel like I was getting out of neutral spinal alignment. However, strict stomach sleepers should consider the firmer model for the best support possible.

Saatva Memory Foam

Back sleeping on the Saatva Memory Foam, I also experienced a balance of comfort and support. The Saatva Memory Foam is also zoned, so I felt extra support under my lower back. Also, with thick memory foam on top, the Saatva Memory Foam offered some nice contouring as well.

Side sleeping, I felt better cushioning around my pressure points than I felt on the Saatva Classic. I still felt some pressure on my shoulders and hips, but I am a larger person and weigh 270 lb. Average weight sleepers should feel better pressure relief than I did.

Stomach sleeping, the Saatva Memory Foam was just decently supportive. I felt better support on the Saatva Classic when I was on my stomach.

What Do The Saatva Classic And Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Feel Like?

Both Saatva mattresses feature coils and are quite responsive. You shouldn’t have trouble moving around on either mattress.

However, they do feel slightly different. The Saatva Classic features more of a plush pillow top feel, and the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid exhibits a soft memory foam feel right on top.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight sleepers should have a similar experience with the Saatva Classic and Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid. Back sleeping, they will get a balance of comfort and support, and side sleeping, they should feel nice pressure relief. However, strict stomach sleepers still might want to consider the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid or the Softer Saatva Classic.

Stomach sleepers under 200 lb should get enough support on both mattresses, but if you weigh more than this, take a look at the Saatva Classic mattress in the Firm option.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavyweight back sleepers who weigh closer to 230 lb should get the support they require on both mattresses. However, if you weigh 300 lb or more, you should take a look at the Saatva HD, the brand’s mattress made just for heavy people.

Heavier side sleepers who weigh closer to 230 should feel decent pressure relief on the Saatva and Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid. Some larger people could compress the Saatva’s coils more and feel like it is even softer. However, if you weigh more than 300 lb, you’ll want to consider the Saatva HD.

Stomach sleepers in this weight range should also find a firmer more supportive mattress. The Saatva Classic and Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid won’t offer enough support under your hips. For more options, check out our best mattress for heavy people roundup.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Both mattresses should work for lightweight combination sleepers. Whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach, you should get the comfort and support that you require.

Saatva And Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Performance Differences

I ran both mattresses through a gauntlet of tests with regard to cooling, motion transfer, and other criteria. I’ll go over how they performed.

Sleeping Hot Or Cold

The Saatva and Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid both feature coils that are going to allow for a good amount of airflow.

However, the Saatva should still be the more breathable mattress. It boasts two sets of coils and does not contain as much memory foam as the Memory Foam Hybrid. So, it should trap less heat and be a better mattress for hot sleepers.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is important for couples to consider. If you sleep with a partner, you don’t want them to disturb you when they move around at night.

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid performs better at motion transfer than the Saatva Classic. Its thick layer of memory foam on top cuts offers better motion isolation than the top layers of the Saatva Classic. The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid might be a better mattress for couples in this respect.

Edge Support

Edge support is also important for couples as it will allow each partner to sleep toward the edge of the mattress. This means you will get to use the full surface area of your mattress without rolling off and onto the floor.

Both of these Saatva mattresses feature nice edge support. Sitting and lying down near the edge of both mattresses, I felt secure and supported.

Durability

Based on their construction, both mattresses should be equally durable. They both feature coils as well as high-density foam. They should both last for at least 10 years.

Off-gassing

Off-gassing occurs when you unbox a new bed-in-a-box online mattress. The great thing about Saatva mattresses is that they don’t come in a box! The Saatva mattresses arrive fully expanded, so you don’t have to worry about off-gassing.

Noise

I heard no noise when I rolled around on the Saatva and Saatva Memory Foam. However, I would note that mattresses with coils might start to make noise after you have had them for a number of years.

Sex

The Saatva Classic should be the better mattress for sex. Sexual partners need a mattress that is bouncy and allows them to move around. While the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid has some bounce, but it doesn’t boast the responsiveness of the Saatva Classic.

Company Policies

Now, let’s take a look at Saatva’s fine print.

Warranty Info

The Saatva and Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid both come with a lifetime warranty.

Sleep Trial

You get a 365-night sleep trial period with both mattresses.
