When it comes to bed-in-a-box mattresses, many of them have similar constructions. You’ll generally find foam and coils in some combination. But, what if you’re looking for something unique? If that’s the case, I always recommend checking out one of the Purple mattresses.

As a fan of the Purple mattresses, I was excited to try out the Purple RestorePlus. This mattress is thicker than the original Purple mattress and feels more luxurious. It also has a zoned support system, which may help people with back pain maintain a neutral spinal alignment throughout the night. But is this the best option for you? Read my unbiased Purple RestorePlus mattress review to find out.

Editor’s Note: The Purple RestorePlus mattress is available in two firmness levels: Soft and Firm. We reviewed the Soft model.

Purple RestorePlus Mattress Video Review

Purple RestorePlus Mattress Review: General Overview

Purple is one of the most popular online mattress brands, but what makes it so special? Well, it’s all about Purple’s proprietary GelFlex Grid. This comfort material is unlike any other mattress material and offers support, comfort and great breathability.

The Purple RestorePlus is part of the brand’s new Premium line and contains a moisture-wicking cover, a thick layer of the GelFlex Grid over and zoned, supportive coils. There’s a lot to love about this Purple mattress, but it is going to work better for certain types of sleepers.

Pros of the Purple RestorePlus Mattress

  • It works well for back sleepers, because it offers a good balance of comfort and support.
  • Side sleepers should get the pressure relief they need, thanks to the squishy gel grid.
  • It’s a breathable mattress that doesn’t trap body heat. The gel grid and support coils allow plenty of room for airflow.

Cons of the Purple RestorePlus Mattress

  • Stomach sleepers won’t get the hip support they need on the soft model of this mattress. If you rest in this sleeping position, you should opt for the firm model instead.
  • Some people may not like the squishy feel of the Purple gel grid. If you’re looking for a traditional mattress, you may want to consider getting a memory foam bed or an innerspring.

Purple RestorePlus Firmness and Feel

When you’re looking for a new mattress, firmness and feel are so important. These things will let you know if a mattress is going to match your sleep preferences. That’s why, when I’m reviewing a mattress, I always start by testing out the firmness and feel.

How Firm Is The Purple RestorePlus?

First off, I’ll note that the Purple RestorePlus comes in two different firmnesses—Soft and Firm. I personally reviewed the Soft model

For me, the Purple RestorePlus Soft felt close to a 6/10, which is a bit softer than 6.5/10, the industry standard for a medium-firm mattress. When I rested on the Purple, it cradled my body, and I did not feel too much pressure anywhere.

However, I am a heavier person—I weigh 270 lb. The Purple GelFlex Grid is unique in that it takes a bit of weight and pressure to really activate it. So, if you are a lighter person, the Purple might feel firmer to you than it did to me.

In addition, the Purple RestorePlus is zoned, so the mattress feels firmer toward the center of the mattress and softer toward the head and foot. This is intended to provide additional lumbar support and to give you the support and pressure relief where you need it in all three sleeping positions. Because of this, it might feel firmer or softer, depending on your sleeping position.

Sleeping On The Purple RestorePlus Mattress

I started out lying on my back on the Purple RestorePlus. In this position, the mattress was a perfect match for me. The GelFlex Grid collapsed slightly under my hips, but the rest of the mattress stayed flat and supportive. Again, if you are a very lightweight sleeper, the mattress might not collapse as much under your hips, which means it could feel firmer.

Side sleeping was also a dream on this mattress. When I rested on my side, the GelFlex Grid cradled my shoulders and hips. I almost felt weightless, and there was no pressure buildup in those areas.

A man sleeps on his side on the Purple RestorePlus mattress

However, when I moved to my stomach, I wasn’t getting enough support under my hips. Even with the zoning, I felt my hips dipping down into the mattress, and this caused some lower back strain. I would suggest stomach sleepers consider the Purple RestorePlus Firm model or another mattress for stomach sleepers

What Does The Purple RestorePlus Feel Like?

The Purple RestorePlus has a very unique feel that you really only get with a Purple mattress. The gel grid gives it a squishy feel that is also bouncy and responsive. It makes it very easy to move around on the mattress.

The Purple feels firm at first, but it will collapse under the heavier parts of your body. In addition, you may feel the grid design through your sheets. I didn’t find this uncomfortable, but it is something to note.

Lightweight (Under 130 lb)GoodFairExcellent
Average (130 – 230 lb)ExcellentExcellentFair
Heavyweight (Over 230 lb)GoodGoodBad

Is the Purple RestorePlus Mattress Good For Lightweight People (Under 130 lb)?

  • It works well for lightweight back sleepers. The supportive coils help promote the proper spinal alignment.
  • Lightweight people won’t compress the gel grid very much, which can make the Purple RestorePlus feel firmer. Many lightweight side sleepers won’t get the pressure relief they need on this mattress.
  • This mattress is a great choice for lightweight stomach sleepers. Because smaller people won’t sink into the gel grid very much, they will get the hip support necessary to maintain the correct spinal alignment.

Is the Purple RestorePlus Mattress Good For Average Weight People (130 – 230 lb)?

  • This mattress is great for average weight back sleepers. The thick coils offer plenty of support, while the gel grid offers body contouring and pressure relief.
  • It’s also a great match for average weight side sleepers. People who weigh between 130 and 230 lb will compress the gel grid enough to feel both comfort and support.
  • Average weight stomach sleepers won’t get the hip support they need on this mattress. People in this category will likely feel their backs craning out of alignment, which can cause pain and tension.

Is the Purple RestorePlus Mattress Good For Heavyweight People (Over 230 lb)?

  • It’s a good option for back sleepers who weigh between 230 and 300 lb. However, heavier people may need more lumbar support and should consider getting one of the best mattresses for heavy people.
  • Side sleepers who weigh between 230 and 300 lb should feel plenty of support and pressure relief on this mattress. But heavier people may “bottom out” and feel pressure along their shoulders and hips.
  • It’s not a good match for heavyweight stomach sleepers. People in this category will sink into the top layer quite a bit, making it hard to maintain the correct spinal alignment.

Purple RestorePlus Mattress Construction

I always like to get inside the mattress and see what’s going on. Now, I’ll go through the materials I found in the Purple RestorePlus and explain what they do for the mattress.

Cover

Right on top of the Purple RestorePlus, there is a SoftFlex cover. This is thin and breathable and allows for air to flow through the top of the mattress. Purple also treats the cover with antimicrobial and moisture-wicking materials. These help fight the buildup of dust and allergens and also keep you from overheating at night.

Comfort Layers

The first layer contains Purple’s proprietary GelFlex Grid. This is one of the most unique materials you will find in an online mattress. It is a grid that is made from a hyperelastic gel polymer. This creates a squishy feel that is supportive and pressure-relieving at the same time.

An inside shot of the Purple RestorePlus's gel grid

A thin layer of foam surrounds this layer to create more firmness toward the edge of the mattress. This promotes edge support and makes it easier to lie down and sleep toward the edge of the mattress.

Below this, there is a layer of comfort foam. This adds even more pressure relief to the mattress and also acts as a transition layer to prevent you from bottoming out on the mattress.

Support Layer

The comfort layers rest on a layer of zoned, individually-wrapped coils. The zoning means the mattress is firmer toward the center of the mattress and will provide additional lumbar support.

Mattress Height

The Purple RestorePlus is 13” tall.

Purple RestorePlus Mattress Performance

There are plenty of other things you want to think about when buying a mattress. For instance, how cooling is it? How does it work for couples? I conducted the following tests to answer these and other questions.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

I was impressed by the cooling capabilities of the Purple RestorePlus mattress. The gel grid left an incredible amount of room for airflow and, together with coils, kept the mattress nice and breathable.

When I rolled around on the mattress, I felt air passing through the mattress, and I never felt like I was overheating. See our best cooling mattresses for more options.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is something that all couples should think about when buying a mattress. If your partner rolls around on their side of the mattress, will it disturb you on your side?

While bouncy mattresses usually aren’t the best with handling motion transfer, this was not the case with the Purple RestorePlus. Its unique GelFlex Grid isolates motion to each area of the mattress, so there was little transfer. This is a huge boon for couples. See our Best Mattresses for Couples for more options.

Edge Support

Edge support is also important for couples as it will allow you to sleep toward the edge without feeling like you are going to roll off.

The Purple RestorePlus had fantastic edge support. I sat and rested near the edge, and it did not collapse too much. As a bigger guy, I’m usually worried about falling off the edge, but it wasn’t an issue with the Purple. This also makes it a good mattress for couples.

Durability

One of the great things about Purple’s GelFlex Grid is its durability. It is designed to stand up to years of use. While I didn’t try the Purple RestorePlus mattress for years, I have seen other Purple mattresses last for a long while. Based on its construction, this mattress should last for between seven and 10 years.

Off-gassing

The Purple RestorePlus came to my testing space in a thick plastic covering. When I unrolled it and took away the plastic, I didn’t notice too much of the off-gassing I usually get with bed-in-a-box mattresses

Still, it is always a good idea to leave your new mattress for a few days before sleeping on it. This will get rid of any odors and allow it to completely expand.

Noise

The Purple RestorePlus made no noise when I rolled around on it. The GelFlex Grid and coils were very quiet, so you shouldn’t hear anything when you get in and out of bed.

However, these coils might start to squeak after you’ve had the mattress for a number of years. As coils start to weaken, they can make noise.

Sex

The Purple RestorePlus should be a fantastic mattress for sex. It is bouncy and should never make you feel like you are stuck in the bed. This will make it easy for sexual partners to move around and change positions.

Purple RestorePlus Company Policies

Let’s take a gander at Purple’s fine print.

Warranty

You get a 10-night warranty with this mattress. It’s important to note that the warranty may become void if you place the mattress an unsupportive surface.

Sleep Trial

Purple offers a 100-night sleep trial with all its mattresses.

Return Policy

The Purple mattresses come with free shipping and returns. Purple does ask customers to try out the mattress for 21 days before issuing a return. After that, and before the end of the trial period, you can return the product and get a full refund.

Common Purple Mattress Complaints

Most of the online complaints I came across had to do with the return policy. Some customers found it difficult to return and some had issues exchanging their mattress for a different model.

How Does The Purple RestorePlus Compare To Others

I always like to do some comparison shopping when I’m looking for a new mattress. Let’s see how the Purple RestorePlus stacks up.

The Purple Original mattress is a much simpler mattress than the RestorePlus. It features less of the gel grid, and it does not have coils. In addition, its cover does not contain the special treatments found in the RestorePlus.

The extra features in the RestorePlus make it a more durable, cooling and pressure-relieving mattress. However, this means you are going to spend more.

The Helix Midnight Elite is another luxurious mattress, but its construction is quite different from the Purple RestorePlus. Instead of a GelFlex Grid, it features multiple layers of foam and microcoils that give it a bouncy, pillow top feel. However, both mattresses have a similar firmness and they are not too far off in price.

The main differences will be feel and breathability. The Helix Midnight Elite has more of a pillow top feel, and the Purple RestorePlus has a squishy, gel-like feel. The Purple RestorePlus also leaves a lot more room for airflow, so it shouldn’t trap as much heat as the Helix.

The Takeaway

The Purple RestorePlus is going to be a great fit for back sleepers, side sleepers and hot sleepers. However, stomach sleepers and fans of firm mattresses should consider the Firm model or another firm mattress altogether. And, if you like a memory foam feel, you might want to keep looking.
