The Plank Firm Luxe is a more affordable hybrid choice for sleepers seeking a firmer bed. What really stands out is its firmness and versatility, as it can be used on either side, with each side offering a different firmness level. It is a great choice for stomach or heavier sleepers who need a firmer-than-average bed, as well as hot sleepers and couples. Iโll examine in depth how it performed during all our testing in this Plank Firm Luxe mattress review, so you know exactly what youโre getting, and how it compares to other mattresses weโve tested.
Since our beginning, weโve tested over 500 mattresses at Mattress Clarity, helping over 40,000 people find a new mattress for their home. Our Plank Firm Luxe Review in a Nutshell
The Plank Firm Luxe is a hybrid mattress designed for people who prefer a firm feel, such as heavier sleepers or stomach sleepers. It is flippable, meaning it can be used on both sides. Offering a firm 7.5/10 firmness on one side, and an extra-firm 8/10 on the other. The mattress has a โcool to the touchโ sleeping surface, making it great for hot sleepers seeking a firmer bed. While the Plank runs firmer than normal, it still offers quality pressure relief due to its comfort-based foam layers, making it a potentially great solution for some side sleepers who prefer firmer support. Furthermore, it is quite affordable compared to similar hybrids and endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association.
The Plank Firm Luxe is an affordable hybrid option for sleepers seeking a firmer feel. The mattress offers great cooling, making it ideal for hot sleepers. Couples can appreciate the bedโs top-notch motion isolation and supportive bounce for moving around on its surface. The mattress also offers impressive pressure relief despite its firmness, making it a strong choice for side sleepers, especially heavier side sleepers, who want a firmer bed that still delivers some contouring and cushioning.

I Recommend the Plank Firm Luxe Forโฆ
- Average and heavyweight side sleepers. Average and heavyweight side sleepers who want firmer support without sacrificing comfort foam cushioning should appreciate the Plankโs hybrid design.
- Couples. Couples who want a bed with quality motion isolation and bounce.
- Budget-minded shoppers. The Plank Firm Luxe is fairly affordable given its quality, versatility, and hybrid construction.

I Donโt Recommend the Plank Firm Luxe Forโฆ
- Seniors or people with mobility issues. The Plank has decent edge support, but not excellent. Some people may find that the edges sag too much when they get in and out of bed and prefer a bed with better edge support.
- Fans of memory foam. The Plank is meant as an extra-firm mattress option that offers pressure relief. However, if you are a fan of the memory-foam โquicksandโ feeling, youโd probably want to consider other options.
- Lightweight side sleepers. Lightweight side sleepers in particular will likely find the Plank too firm and prefer a softer mattress.

How Firm is the Plank Firm Luxe Mattress?
The Plank Firm Luxe is a flippable mattress that offers a different firmness on each side. We use a firmness guide ranging from 1 to 10 to grade all the mattresses we test, with 1 being marshmallowy soft and 10 being hard as a rock. On the โsofter sideโ of the Plank, I gave it a 7.5/10 firmness rating, and on the harder side, an 8/10. For context, the industry standard is a medium-firm 6.5/10 on our firmness scale.
โThe Plank Firm Luxe is designed to stand out as a firmer option while still offering pressure-relieving comfort. So, stomach sleepers and heavyweight sleepers should find this mattress a great option. Moreover, having two firmness options in one bed makes it ideal for sleepers who want versatility or canโt make up their mind.
How Does the Plank Firm Luxe Feel for Different Body Types and Sleeping Positions?
With a 7.5/10 firmness on one side and an 8/10 on the other, both sides of this mattress are firmer than most beds. The Plank uses multiple comfort layers in its hybrid design to make it accessible to average-weight side and back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel and donโt want to compromise foam-based cushioning. Iโd say this mattress is an excellent choice for stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers. I believe most lightweight side and back sleepers will find the mattress too firm.
In this table, I outline what each weight category and sleeper type should likely expect from the Plank Firm Luxe.
| Sleeper Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
| Light (under 130 lbs) | Unpleasant | Good | Good |
| Average (130-230 lbs) | Good | Excellent | Excellent |
| Heavy (over 230 lbs) | Good | Excellent | Excellent |
Average-weight Tester โ 5โ4โ, 170 lbs
โI am a side sleeper, and when I was testing the firm side of this bed, I wanted to stay on it and nap. While resting on my back on the extra-firm side, I liked how it felt around my lower back a lot, and it was even and balanced under my shoulders. However, any way you slice it, this is a pretty firm bed.โ โ Sosha Lewis
Plank Firm Luxe In-Depth Test Results
Pressure Relief
According to Dr. Raj Dasupta, โAn unsuitable mattress can make your pressure point discomfort worse if it doesnโt offer the proper support.โ Sosha Lewis, our expert tester and certified sleep science coach, tried the Plank Firm Luxe to get a feel for its pressure-relieving abilities and rated it 4.3/5 on the firm side and 4.5/5 on the extra-firm side in this category.
Both sides are firmer than most beds, but use layers of foam for cushioning to relieve pressure buildup in your joints and back. On the firm side, Sosha tried resting on her side and said, โThe foam did a great job contouring around my shoulders and hips, as the pocketed coils kept me supported and elevated. I didnโt feel any pressure, and Iโm not normally a fan of the Plankโs firmness.โ

Then she switched to her back and said, โIt felt great around the shoulders. I did feel like my hips sank into the foam a little too much, which caused some pressure on my lower back. But it wasnโt a deal breaker as the springs caught me pretty quickly.โ Overall, she gave a 4.5/5 for side sleeping and a 4/5 for back sleeping.

On the extra-firm side, Sosha conducted the same feel tests. On her side, she said, โThe foam did a good job contouring, and the springs kept me aligned.โ She gave side-sleeping on the extra-firm side a 4/5. On her back, she gave the experience a perfect 5/5, citing that sheโs not a back sleeper, but โIt was enjoyable and pleasantโฆparticularly around my lower back.โ

Edge Support
An easy way to understand edge support is to think about how secure you feel sitting or sleeping on a bedโs perimeter. Youโre going to want the same support youโd get at the center of the bed on its edges, especially if youโre sharing the bed with someone.
This is important not only for couples who want to use as much surface area as possible, or for those of us who put on our shoes while sitting on the edge of our mattress, but also for seniors or people who struggle to get in and out of bed. The Plank Firm Luxe had decent but below-average edge support during our studio testing. Sosha rated the bed 3.2/5 on the firm side and 3/5 on the extra-firm side.
She first tried sitting on the Plankโs edges and reported, โI wouldnโt recommend either side of this bed for those with mobility issues, but anyone else should be fine.โ
This falls in line with the guidance Dr. Dasgupta gave us, โOlder adults often need a mattress thatโs easy to get in and out of, with extra cushioning for joint pain, but enough support to prevent sinking. Edge support is an important feature for this group of sleepers,โ he said.
Then she tried resting on the Plankโs edges and found decent support, but โstill wasnโt wild about it.โ

After this feel test, Sosha placed three different sets of weights on the Plankโs edges (firm side) and measured how much the edge sank. With the lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight sets, she measured 4, 5, and 6.5 inches, respectively.
For context, five inches or more is when we would start to consider unsound edge support in a bed. So, petite sleepers can expect decent edge support, but those weighing more than 130 pounds will probably find the Plankโs edges subpar.
Overall, Iโd suggest people who really need quality edge support in their bed consider an alternative to the Plank with more durable edges.
Cooling
Despite multiple dense foam layers, the Plank Firm Luxe was โcool as a cucumberโ according to Sosha. Likely in part due to its airy innerspring core and cooling features, Sosha rated the mattress 4/5 for cooling.
When we tested the Plankโs cooling ability, Sosha used a thermal gun that measures the bedโs temperature. In this test, Sosha first measured the bedโs resting room temperature. Then she rested on it for about 5 minutes and got off the bed to check how much the bedโs temperature had risen, which let us know how well it dissipates body heat. Considering the Plank Luxe is basically two beds in one, she did this test on both sides.

She measured the bedโs initial temperature on the firm side at 67 degrees, and after resting on it for seven minutes, it was 73.8 degrees (6.8 degree increase). On the extra-firm side, the readings were 64.6 degrees, then 71.9 degrees after another brief siesta (7.3 degree increase). We consider a mattress to have great cooling capabilities if it shows less than an 8-degree increase in this test.
In addition to the thermal gun test, Sosha also described how she felt lying on the bed. She found both sides were โvery cool to the touch,โ and was surprised by the temperature increase read by the thermal gun, saying, โThe cover is one of the coolest Iโve ever felt, and I think that the temperature increase is more a reflection of my body heat in a super cold studio.โ
Considering this, the reading may have been even more impressive. But overall, based on the tests, I think hot sleepers will find the Plank Luxe a helpful mattress for falling asleep. Dr. Dasgupta reminds us that a cooling mattress is important because, โIn general, your body likes to cool down when you lie down and warm up when you wake up. Having a mattress and sheets that help you efficiently dissipate heat can help regulate your circadian rhythm and body temperature, which can lead to better sleep.โ
Although this one should do a great job at regulating your temperature, if youโre looking for a 5/5 cooling mattress to keep you from overheating, you can check our top mattresses for hot sleepers round-up.
Motion Isolation
If youโre a light sleeper sharing a bed with someone who moves around and wakes you up through the night, a bedโs ability to prevent motion transfer (motion isolation) will be important. We assess the quality of motion isolation by how well a bed absorbs sleepersโ movements on its surface, and found the Plank Firm Luxe was excellent. Our tester, Sosha, gave the bedโs firm side a 4.7/5 and the extra-firm side a perfect 5/5 when testing the Plankโs motion-isolating abilities.
Sosha tested out both sides using two types of tests. First, Sosha conducted what we call a โripple testโ. This includes placing a tub of water on one side of the bed and observing how much the water moves as she gets in and out of the bed and changes sleeping positions.
On the firm side, when Sosha got in and out of the bed or changed sleeping positions, she noticed โvery little ripplingโ in the water tub, and said, โThe thicker foam absorbed the motion really well.โ When doing the same test on the extra-firm side, she noticed almost no rippling and, put simply, said, โExcellent motion isolation, very little motion in the water.โ

The next test is pretty straightforward: two testers take turns moving around next to each other on the mattress (while blindfolded) and record how much each feels the otherโs movements. Sosha did the test with her fellow sleep science coach, Riley Otis.
On the less firm side, Sosha said, โI could feel the slightest movement when Riley got in and out of bed, but it was not anything that would give me pause, and I am a very light sleeper.โ And on the firmer side, Sosha said, โI only felt the slightest of motion when Riley got in bed and when she rolled around.โ Based on Soshaโs tests, I would absolutely recommend the Plank Firm Luxe for couples sharing a bed.
Response
We assess a bedโs responsiveness by how easy it is to move around on it while receiving consistent, responsive support. For example, I often fall asleep on my back and wake up on my side, and I find that a bedโs responsiveness is really important to consider to ensure my spine is contoured and supported whichever way I end up sleeping.
Sosha conducted a switch test on the Plank Firm Luxe, where someone changes positions and notes how well the bed follows them in terms of support and bounce. Sosha gave the Plank a 4.5/5 for the bedโs firm sideโs responsiveness, saying, โI didnโt feel stuck at all.โ Then she tried the extra-firm side and gave it a perfect 5/5, adding, โVery easy to switch positions.โ

Iโd definitely recommend the Plank Firm Luxe for combination sleepers who want a firmer bed. But Iโd also say the mattress is a good choice for couples seeking a bed that is easy to โmove aroundโ on.
Sinkage: Moderate
Sinking into a bedโs comfort layers can offer awesome relief, but too much can lead to a lack of spinal alignment support while you sleep. Thatโs why we placed a 44-pound kettlebell on each side of the Plank Firm Luxeโs surface to measure its sinkage depth and determine if there is a healthy balance of cradling comfort and firm support (healthy sinkage).

On the firm side, Sosha measured 2.75 inches of sinkage, and on the extra-firm side, Riley measured 2.25 inches. This would be considered moderate sinkage, but less than the average 3 inches demonstrated by most beds we test. Given the Plankโs firmness, Iโd consider these to be great measurements.
Bounce: High
Bounce can indicate how well a mattress returns to its original shape, reflecting ease of movement and the efficiency of its support layers. We judge a bedโs bounce by dropping a weighted ball on it and recording how high it bounces back up.
Sosha dropped the ball on each side of the Plank Firm Luxe and recorded roughly a 28-inch bounce by the ball on both sides. Weโd classify this as high bounce, well above the average 18-inch bounce we see in most beds during this test.
Noise
Sosha moved around on the Plank Firm Luxe in order to get a feel for how noisy the mattress would be when moving on it. She didnโt hear any creaking or noticeable noisiness on either side, giving the bed a 5/5 for noise. This is impressive considering the thick layer of steel coils in the Plank and should stand out to couples sharing the bed or light sleepers.
Sex
When it comes to sex, the Plank Firm Luxe scored a 4.3/5. I came to this score by averaging its response, edge support, and noise scores. The Plank offers great bounce for moving around on and is pretty quiet when you do, but its edge support was lacking. So you may feel a lack of support the further you move away from the bedโs center. However, you do have two sides to the bed to try out, which is a nice perk of the Plank.
I would say the Plank is a good pick for couples. But if its edge support still has you wondering whether thereโs something better for you and your partner, you can check out our best mattresses for couples or best mattresses for sex roundup articles for potential alternatives to find a better fit.
Adjustable Base Compatibility
According to Brooklyn Bedding, the manufacturer of the Plank Firm Luxe, its mattresses are compatible with most solid wood or metal foundations. However, we tried the mattress out on an adjustable bed ourselves. Sosha tested it and said it โdid an okay job conforming to the base.โ She gave it a 3/5 for its base compatibility, citing a noticeable gap โwhere the bed and base didnโt quite meet.โ
Plank Firm Luxe Customer Experience Scores
Our customer experience score reflects the ease of getting and setting up your bed, as well as its policies and fine print. Below, I take a closer look at what you can expect with the Plank Firm Luxe.
Trial Period
Trial periods give people buying a bed online the chance to make sure itโs the right choice for the long term. The Plank Firm Luxe offers a 120-night trial period, which isnโt as generous as some other luxury brandsโ 365-night trials. However, this should give you plenty of time to know if the Plank is right for you.
I should note that there is a $99 return fee. Otherwise, you should be able to return the Plank hassle-free during the trial period.
Warranty
Many brands offer a 10-year warranty, but the Plank includes a lifetime warranty, which is as good as it gets. While most beds will likely need to be replaced after 10 years anyway, a lifetime warranty reflects a companyโs confidence in the long-term durability of its product. The only reason it didnโt get a 5/5? That $99 return fee.
Unboxing and Moving

Like most online mattresses, the Plank Firm Luxe arrives compressed in a box. According to Sosha, the box that it comes in is a little tough to open, so itโs good to have a box cutter when it arrives. More importantly, the mattress is not light. As I noted before, the queen-size model weighs around 110 pounds. So Iโd definitely recommend having someone else around to help with moving the mattress into place.
Readiness After Unboxing
Most online mattresses arrive compressed and take some time to expand to their proper shape. When Sosha took the Plank out of its delivery box, it expanded almost immediately.
Off-gassing
New mattresses or sleep products, especially those that contain foam, can take some time to lose their โnew bedโ smell, which is called โoff-gassing.โ However, Sosha didnโt detect any noticeable off-gassing after setting up the Plank. In most cases, Brooklyn Bedding recommends waiting 24 to 72 hours for the smell to dissipate, but our Plank was ready to go.
Plank Firm Luxe Construction
The Plank Firm Luxe has a hybrid design that offers dual-sided firmness and leverages both foam and coiled layers to deliver versatility. Below, Iโll go through its ins and outs to let you know exactly what youโre getting.
Mattress Height & Weight
The Plank Firm Luxe is a 13-inch hybrid mattress, which is a bit taller than the average mattress. This is no surprise considering the Plank offers essentially two beds in one.
The Luxe is delivered compressed in a box, with the queen-size model weighing roughly 110 pounds. Considering its large size and weight, Iโd suggest having your partner, family, or a friend on standby when it arrives to help unbox and move it into place.
Materials
The Plank Firm Luxe is a hybrid with multiple layers, GREENGUARD Gold- and CertiPUR-US-certified foams, 6-inch coils, and cooling fibers.
Layers
On each side, the top layer is a quilted surface of tightly stitched, breathable fibers (.75 inches thick on the firmer side and 1.5 inches thick on the other). The quilted surface layer is quite breathable, but the Plank offers a specialized cooling polyester cover called GlacioTex for extra-hot sleepers. The cover adds an additional $100 to the bedโs cost, but according to Sosha, โThe cooling cover is impressive! It felt legit cold when I first touched it.โ
Under the firmer side of the mattress is a layer of 2-inch high-density support foam. On the less firm side is an additional layer of high-density foam and a 1-inch responsive foam layer for some additional soft comfort. At its core, there is a six-inch layer of individually encased steel coils (roughly 961 according to the Plank) to help with airflow, bounce, and stable support.
How To Try and Buy The Plank Firm Luxe Mattress
There are partner showrooms across the country that sell the Plank Firm Luxe. The easiest way to find out if one is near you is by visiting their showroom locator on Brooklyn Beddingโs official site. If you canโt find one near you, you can easily purchase the Plank online, either by visiting its official site or by visiting Amazon. I should note that if you purchase a Plank through a partner showroom, you will have to deal directly with the showroom for any returns or general issues that may arise.

How The Plank Firm Luxe Compares
The Plank Firm Luxe is a very firm mattress with a flippable design, making it unique and versatile compared to many other hybrids. However, if it still doesnโt seem right for you, I compared it to some of the other mattresses weโve tested in our studio.
- Helix Dawn Luxe Mattress โ Better edge support
- DreamCloud Original Mattress โ More affordable
- Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid โ Three firmness options
| Rating | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firmness | Multiple firmness options | Firm: 7.5/10 | Medium-firm: 6.5/10 | Multiple firmness options |
| Material | Hybrid | Hybrid | Hybrid | Hybrid |
| Cooling | โ | |||
| Best For | Side Sleepers, Back Sleepers, Stomach Sleepers | Back Sleepers, Stomach Sleepers, Hot Sleepers | Back Sleepers, Stomach Sleepers, Hot Sleepers | Side Sleepers, Back Sleepers, Stomach Sleepers |
Plank Firm Luxe vs. Helix Dawn Luxe
The Helix Dawn Luxe is also a hybrid that caters to fans of firmer mattresses. The Dawn comes in a 7.5/10 firmness. However, unlike the Plank, the Dawn is not flippable. Both are quality hybrids designed and distributed by Brooklyn Bedding, which means they both include limited lifetime warranties and 120-night sleep trials with your purchase.
The Helix Dawn Luxe is considerably more expensive, at $2,398 for a queen, without any discounts. That said, in our tests, the Dawn Luxe demonstrated considerably better edge support (5/5) than the Plank, making it likely more durable and potentially a better choice for seniors and couples. Although couples, especially those shopping on a budget, may appreciate that the Plank had slightly better motion-isolation scores in our tests.
Despite lacking the Plankโs versatile design, the Dawn Luxe is likely a more durable, better-cooling mattress than the Plank. But given the difference in pricing, I would say the Dawn is only a better choice if budget isnโt a priority when youโre shopping for a bed.

Plank Firm Luxe vs. DreamCloud Classic Hybrid
The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid also runs firmer than the industry-standard, at 7.5/10. The mattress had similar performance scores to the Plank across the board. With the exception of edge support, where the DreamCloud scored slightly higher at 4.4/5. However, on the customer experience front, the DreamCloud really stood out. Unlike the Plank, the DreamCloud offers completely free returns and a longer, 365-night sleep trial.
Despite similar scores when we tested the DreamCloud, it is actually more affordable than the Plank, at $699 for a queen, at the time of writing. Iโd say that if the Plankโs flippability doesnโt motivate you to get it, the DreamCloud is a great, more affordable alternative.

Plank Firm Luxe vs. Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid
The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid is designed to deliver enhanced cooling thanks to its treated gel memory foam and airy innerspring layer, which explains the โChillโ in its name. When we tested it, it did demonstrate quality cooling at 4.5/5, but thatโs only slightly better than what we found with the Plank (4/5). The Sapira Chill also had better edge support (4/5), which isnโt surprising, as the Plankโs edge support wasnโt awful, but didnโt impress us.
What really stands out is that the Sapira Chill Hybrid is available in three firmness options (plush, medium-firm, and firm). So if you really like the Sapira Chill model, it may be easier to customize your firmness preference.
But the Plank is really designed for fans of firmer mattresses, and Iโd say multiple firmness options in the same bed is more impressive. I think the Sapira Chillโs softer firmness options make it a better choice for lightweight stomach sleepers, particularly those seeking a quality cooling hybrid. But since it is much more expensive than the Plank and offers only slightly better cooling, budget-minded shoppers seeking a firm mattress will be just fine sticking with the Plank Firm Luxe.
