Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Overview

Helix is a brand that is all about options. It offers numerous hybrid mattress models with a variety of firmness levels, and its sleep quiz makes it easy to find the right model. Its most popular model is the Helix Midnight, a hybrid mattress with a great balance of comfort and support.

The Helix Midnight is available in two versions, the Standard and the Luxe. As the name suggests, the Midnight Luxe is the more deluxe version, while the Standard doesn’t have the same bells and whistles. I slept on both mattresses and, while they are both high-quality, your budget and sleeping preferences are going to determine which mattress you should choose.

Firmness and Feel Differences

You should always think about firmness and feel when you are shopping for a new mattress. There are some slight firmness and feel differences between the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe.

How Firm are the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe

The Helix Midnight has a firmness of 7/10, firmer than average. The top layer of Memory Plus Foam is soft, but the transition layer and coils provide some firmness as well.

The Luxe version is closer to 6.5/10, exactly medium-firm on our firmness scale. The pillow top adds some more softness to the top of the mattress and makes for a plusher night of sleep.

Sleeping on the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe

Starting off back sleeping on the Helix Midnight, it is a good match for me. The Memory Plus Foam contours to the shape of my body, and I can feel the support of the coils below. However, I definitely feel better back sleeping on the Helix Midnight Luxe. The plush pillow top is more comfortable, and I can also feel the zoning provides the lumbar support that I need when I sleep in this position. Both should be good mattresses for back sleepers, but the Helix Midnight Luxe is going to be the better option.

A man sleeps on the Helix Midnight mattress.

Side sleeping on the Midnight, I am feeling some pressure on my shoulders and hips. However, I weigh 270 lbs, and I might be pressing too far into the mattress. I definitely feel better pressure relief on the Helix Midnight Luxe. Still, side sleepers might want to look at one of Helix’s softer models, such as the Helix Sunset.

A wide shot of a man sleeping on his side.

Stomach sleeping, neither of these mattresses are giving me quite enough support under my hips. Stomach sleepers usually fare better on firmer mattresses, and the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe are medium-firm mattresses. If you sleep on your stomach, consider the Helix Dawn mattress, the brand’s firmest model.

What Do the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe Feel Like?

The Helix Midnight mattress is a bouncier hybrid with a balanced foam feel on top. The Memory Plus Foam offers some of that slow-moving memory foam feel, but it also has good responsiveness. Lying on the Helix Midnight mattress, I feel the foam conforming to my body while the coils hold me up.

The Helix Midnight Luxe features a number of the same materials, but it does feel different. This is mainly due to the additional plush pillow top. The mattress is still responsive but, when I lie down, I mostly feel myself sink into the pillow top.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

Average weight back sleepers who weigh closer to 130 lbs should get enough support from the Helix Midnight mattress. If you weigh more than that, the Helix Midnight Luxe is going to offer you an even better balance of comfort and support. The zoning is very noticeable in the Helix Midnight Luxe and will work to keep your spine aligned while you sleep.

Side sleepers of this body type should feel great pressure relief on both mattresses. Again, the Helix Midnight Luxe is softer so, if you need even more relief for pressure points, this is the way to go. If you need even more pressure relief, take a look at one of Helix’s softer models.

If you weigh close to 130 lbs, you could get enough support while stomach sleeping on the Helix Midnight. The Helix Midnight Luxe could work as well, but it could still be too soft. The majority of average weight stomach sleepers should choose one of the Helix’s firmer models.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

If you are a heavyweight back sleeper, the Midnight Luxe should be the better choice. The zoned coils provide more support where you need it and, overall, the mattress is more durable. If you weigh over 300 lbs, take a look at our best mattresses for heavy people.

Heavyweight side sleepers should feel less pressure on their shoulders and hips while lying on the Helix Midnight Luxe. Still, heavyweight side sleepers might need even more pressure relief from a softer mattress.

Heavyweight stomach sleepers will want a mattress that is firmer than both the Midnight and Midnight Luxe. They should check out one of Helix’s firmer models or the Helix Plus mattress, which is made specifically for heavy people.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

If you are a lighter person, you should find a good balance of comfort and support on both the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe. You might not need all the extra plushnes the Luxe provides, and you could save money by choosing the standard Midnight.

Side sleeping, both mattresses should work for you as well. You shouldn’t press too far into either mattress, and you should mostly feel the soft pressure-relieving layers on top.

Being lighter, you could also get enough support while stomach sleeping on these two mattresses. Between the two, the Midnight could feel better as it is the firmer option.

Mattress Construction Differences

Let’s take a look inside the Midnight and Midnight Luxe to see what makes them tick.

Cover

The Helix Midnight standard mattress features a Tencel cover right on top. This breathable cover allows air to flow through the top of the mattress.

When you purchase a Helix Midnight Luxe mattress, you can choose from the Tencel cover or a special GlacioTex Cooling Cover. This material is cool to the touch and designed to dissipate heat while you are sleeping.

Comfort Layer

In its comfort layer, the Helix Midnight mattress contains Memory Plus Foam. This material has some of that slow-moving feel you expect from memory foam but is designed to sleep cool.

The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress features the same Memory Plus Foam with a layer of Gel Visco Foam right beneath that. The Gel Visco Foam is bouncy and helps ease you down into the mattress. Right on top of the mattress, the Helix Midnight Luxe boasts a thick, plush quilted pillow top. The pillow top is quilted with soft foam to add more plushness right on top of the Luxe.

Transition Layer

The Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe have a transition layer made of high-grade polyfoam. It helps keep you from bottoming out on the mattress.

Support Layer

There are pocketed coils in the support layer of both the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe. However, the Luxe’s coils are zoned and feel firmer toward the center of the mattress. This design is meant to help support the lower back, which helps reduce back pain and boosts spinal alignment.

DuraDense foam can be found on the bottom of both mattresses. This base layer helps support the multiple layers above.

Mattress Height

The Helix Midnight is 12” tall, and the Helix Midnight Luxe is 14” tall.

Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe Performance Differences

I ran the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe through a number of tests. Let’s see how each performed.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

These are both hybrid mattresses so, right off the bat, they are going to be breathable. The coils in their support layers will allow for a good amount of airflow. They also feature cooling foams.

Between the two, the Helix Midnight Luxe does sleep cooler. With its optional cooling cover, it does a better job of keeping me cool during the night. I can feel the cover drawing heat away from my body. Read our best cooling mattresses article for more like the Helix Midnight Luxe.

Motion Transfer

If you want a mattress for couples, you want something that will help cut down on motion transfer. This will allow you and your partner to move around on each side of the mattress without disturbing one another.

During my tests, the Helix Midnight Luxe performed better with motion isolation. Lying down on one side of the mattress, I asked my coworker to move around on the other side. On the Helix Midnight, I did feel some of those movements on my side of the mattress. I did not have this issue on the Helix Midnight Luxe.

Edge Support

The Helix Midnight has decent edge support, and I don’t feel like I am going to roll off when I am lying near the edge. The Helix Midnight Luxe has even better edge support. It is a taller, more supportive mattress, and I feel much more secure sitting and lying down near the edge.

A man sits on the edge of the Helix Midnight Luxe

Durability

Looking at the construction of both mattresses, it’s pretty clear that the Helix Midnight Luxe should be the more durable option. It is a more deluxe mattress and features more high-density materials. The Helix Midnight should last for at least 10 years, and the Helix Midnight should last between 10 and 15 years. It is definitely a mattress that should not sag too quickly.

Off-gassing

When I unboxed the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe, I noticed a slight chemical smell. This is a normal occurrence with bed-in-a-box mattresses, and this smell disappeared after 48 hours. I would just recommend leaving the mattress in a well-ventilated area for this period of time.

Sex

Partners who want a mattress for sex should find something on the bouncier side. This will allow you and your partner to move around with ease. The Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe are both bouncy mattresses, so they should be good mattresses for sex.

Noise

When I move around on these mattresses, I don’t hear any noise. However, given that they feature coils, they could start to squeak after many years of use.
