Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Overview

One of the main things that put the Casper signature mattress on the map was its proprietary Zoned Support system. Its transition layer was designed to be firmer toward the center, providing additional lumbar support and making the mattress a good match for combination sleepers.

Now, the Casper Nova Hybrid takes that zoned construction to another level. The mattress contains not one, but two zoned foam layers that provide a great mix of comfort and support. Together with a set of supportive coils, these materials make the Casper Nova Hybrid an enticing mattress for many types of sleepers.

Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Firmness And Feel

As the name suggests, the Casper Nova Hybrid is a hybrid mattress with coils in the support layer, plusher foam layers on top, and an advanced zoned construction. Let’s take a look at how these materials and construction affect the firmness and feel of the Casper Nova Hybrid mattress.

How Firm Is The Casper Nova Hybrid?

The Casper Nova Hybrid feels like a 6.5/10 and is just about medium in terms of firmness. The top layer of Airscape foam is quite soft, as is the layer of Airscape foam beneath that. However, the mattress is zoned in two layers so it might feel firmer or softer depending on someone’s sleeping position – the Casper Nova Hybrid might feel firmer and more supportive when someone is back sleeping or stomach sleeping, but softer when they are side sleeping.

Sleeping On The Casper Nova Hybrid

Lying down on the Casper Nova Hybrid, we found the mattress to be an excellent fit for back sleeping. With its two zoned layers, we experience extra lumbar support, the support coils are providing good overall support, and the top layer of AirScape foam is also contouring to the curves of the body.

Casper Nova Hybrid - Back Sleeping

The Casper Nova Hybrid also offers fantastic pressure relief for a majority of side sleepers. The AirScape foam is quite soft and, because of the zoning, the mattress feels softer under the shoulders. Heavier side sleepers, however, might feel some more pressure on their shoulders and hips.

Even with its zoned construction, the Casper Nova Hybrid will not be firm enough for most stomach sleepers. They could feel their hips bow into the mattress, which could lead to lower back strain.

What Does The Casper Nova Hybrid Feel Like?

Overall, the Casper Nova Hybrid features a balanced foam feel that is soft and responsive. The AirScape foam lets us sink in a fair bit, but it is not too difficult to move around or change positions on the Casper Nova Hybrid. Also, because of the zoning, the mattress will let sleepers sink in more in some areas and less in others.

Casper Nova Hybrid - Firmness And Feel

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

Those who aren’t too heavy should find the Nova Hybrid to be a good fit for both back sleeping and side sleeping. The zoning works well to provide back sleepers with a good balance of comfort and support, and the soft foams should help relieve pressure on the shoulders and hips when people are side sleeping.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

Heavyweight sleepers are going to get all the comfort and support they require while back sleeping. However, when they move to their sides, they could feel some pressure on their shoulders and hips. This is because their heavier weight is pulling them further into the mattress, so they are hitting the support layers beneath. Stomach sleeping, they are also going to need more support under their hips.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

The Casper Nova Hybrid is going to be a very good match for lightweight sleepers when they are on their back and side. They will feel supported and comfortable when back sleeping and they should feel almost no pressure when side sleeping. Some very light stomach sleepers could even get enough support on the Nova Hybrid.

Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Construction

There’s a lot going on under the hood of the Casper Nova Hybrid. Let’s open it up and see what the layers are and how they really work.

Cover

The Casper Nova Hybrid features a knit cover that is very soft to the touch and breathable as well. It is designed to stretch in four different directions, allowing sleepers to get the most out of the plush layers beneath.

Comfort Layers

The top layer of the Casper Nova Hybrid consists of something called AirScape foam. It is a very plush proprietary foam that is also quite responsive. It is also ventilated for airflow.

Casper Nova Hybrid - Construction And Foam Layers

Below that, there is another layer of AirScape foam that is zoned. Basically, the center of this layer is firmer than toward the head and foot of the mattress. This design is meant to provide extra lumbar support while making this a great mattress for combination sleepers.

There is another zoned foam layer, called Zoned Support Pro, underneath these two layers. This convoluted layer of foam provides more enhanced zoning that provides support and comfort where it is most needed.

Support Layer

The base of the Casper Nova Hybrid consists of supportive pocketed coils with a foam encasement surrounding them. This foam is meant to provide additional edge support.

The Nova Hybrid also pairs well with the Casper adjustable bases.

Mattress Height

The Casper Nova Hybrid is 12″ tall and is a bit thinner than other types of hybrid mattresses.

Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Performance

We put the Casper Nova Hybrid to the test to find out how it performed in regard to its cooling features, motion transfer, and durability. Let’s see how it did!

Cooling

The Casper Nova Hybrid contains many materials that should keep it from sleeping hot. The coils will promote airflow through the mattress, and the ventilated AirScape foam should also make the top of the mattress breathable. The Zoned Support Pro layer also features air channels that will allow for even more airflow. Because of this, in our experience, the Casper Nova Hybrid slept cool.

If you want to sleep even cooler, read our Casper Nova Hybrid Snow mattress review. It boasts even more advanced cooling features. For something more luxurious, check out our Casper Wave Hybrid Snow mattress review.

Motion Transfer

To test out the motion transfer on the Casper Nova Hybrid, we placed a glass of water in the center of the mattress and pressed into the surrounding areas of the mattress. We did see some disturbance in the water. Also, Marten laid on one side of the mattress while Danny moved around on the other side of the mattress. He did feel some of Danny’s movements transfer to his side of the bed.

The Casper Nova Hybrid is isolating some motion but sleeping partners could disturb one another when they move around at night.

Casper Nova Hybrid - Motion Transfer

Edge Support

Even with its foam encasement and supportive coils, the Nova Hybrid does not boast the most amazing edge support. Sitting near the edge of the Nova Hybrid, it does collapse a good amount. We do feel secure enough to sit on the edge but, when we lie down, it is even more difficult to keep from rolling off.

Casper Nova Hybrid - Edge Support

Durability

Based on the materials and high-end construction, the Casper Nova Hybrid appears to be a very durable mattress that won’t sag. It contains high-density foams and pocketed coils which should stand up to at least seven years of use.

Off-gassing

When we unboxed the Casper Nova Hybrid mattress at home, there was some initial off-gassing. However, we left the mattress for two days and opened a window, and the chemical smell completely disappeared.

Noise

The Casper Nova Hybrid does contain coils that usually cause noise when moving around on a mattress. However, given that they are pocketed coils and are surrounded by a foam encasement, we didn’t hear much notice when we changed positions and rolled around on the Nova Hybrid.

Sex

While the Casper Nova Hybrid features soft foam in its top layers, it is still a responsive mattress, and it could be a good mattress for sex. The AirScape foam and coils provide some real bounce to the mattress, so it should not be difficult for sexual partners to get the leverage and mobility they need.

Casper Nova Hybrid Vs Casper Original Mattress

Anyone who is taking a look at the Casper Nova Hybrid probably wants to know how it compares to the original Casper mattress.
