For years, people have been flipping over the Layla mattress – literally. The Layla is a comfortable memory foam mattress with both a firm side and a soft side, giving sleepers two comfort levels in one!

Recently, the company released a hybrid version of this very popular mattress. The Layla Hybrid is still a flippable mattress, but it contains individually-wrapped coils in its support layer, not foam. As a fan of the original Layla, I was interested to see if coils would improve an already comfortable mattress – read on for my unbiased Layla Hybrid mattress review!

Layla Hybrid Mattress Overview

The Layla Hybrid’s flippable design makes it a good match for all three sleeping positions. The soft side should feel particularly comfortable for side sleeping, the soft or firm side should work for back sleeping, and the firm side should offer the support that stomach sleepers require.

This versatile mattress could suit several types of sleepers, but it won’t be a match for everyone. Here’s an overview of who might like the Layla Hybrid and who might not.

Who Might Like The Layla Hybrid?

  • Those who are combo sleepers.
  • People who primarily sleep on their side.
  • People who aren’t sure what firmness they want.
  • Hot sleepers who are looking for more airflow.

Who Might Not Like The Layla Hybrid?

  • Sleepers who want a medium-firm mattress – the Layla Hybrid mattress only offers soft and firm.
  • People who don’t like sinking into their mattresses.

Layla Hybrid Mattress Firmness And Feel

When shopping for a new mattress, it’s critical to consider a bed’s firmness and feel. These factors have a big impact on whether a mattress will feel comfortable for different types of sleepers.

How Firm Is The Layla Hybrid?

The Layla Hybrid is a flippable mattress, so it actually offers two firmnesses in one mattress. The soft side of the Layla Hybrid is a 6/10, a bit softer-than-average, and the firm side is a 7.5/10, a tad firmer-than-average.

Sleeping On The Layla Hybrid Mattress

With its thick layer of memory foam, the soft side of the Layla Hybrid offers some exceptional pressure relief; you should sink into the mattress and feel almost no pressure on the shoulders and hips.

Also, when you lie on your back, the memory foam should provide some contouring, and the coils should offer enough support. However, stomach sleeping might be difficult on the soft side of the Layla Hybrid, and you will probably need more support.

Layla Hybrid Back Sleeping

What Does The Layla Hybrid Feel Like?

While the mattress features copper-infused memory foam on both sides, the thickness of these comfort layers really gives each side a different feel.

With its thicker comfort layer, the soft side should allow you to sink further into the mattress and have more of that classic memory foam feel. On the firm side, the memory foam layer is quite thin, so it should feel more like you are sleeping on top of the mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

Because the Layla Hybrid offers firmness options (soft or firm), average weight sleepers should really enjoy the Layla Hybrid mattress.

Both sides should work for average weight back sleeping, however, the firm side should be more supportive. Stomach sleeping may not be enjoyable on the soft side of the Layla Hybrid, however, average weight stomach sleepers should feel plenty of support on the firm side of the Layla Hybrid mattress. Side sleeping, the soft side of the Layla Hybrid should offer exceptional pressure relief, but the firm side should be too firm.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

Heavyweight back and side sleepers should feel supported on the Layla Hybrid mattress. On the soft side, the heavyweight side sleepers should get enough pressure relief to enjoy side sleeping. On the firm side, the larger back sleepers should feel ample support from the coils.

If you are a heavyweight stomach sleeper, the Layla Hybrid may not give you enough support and you should check out our list of best mattresses for heavy people instead.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

Lightweight side sleepers should feel really comfortable on the Layla Hybrid mattress as they should experience the soft contour of the comfort layers as well as great pressure relief on the shoulders and hips, especially on the soft side.

Lightweight back sleepers should also really enjoy the Layla Hybrid as they should feel comfort from the mattress contouring to the body and the support of the lumbar region.

Stomach sleepers who are lightweight may want to look for a mattress with more support. Check out the best mattresses for stomach sleepers to get an idea of what to look for.

Layla Hybrid Mattress Construction

It’s time to look under the cover of the Layla Hybrid mattress and see exactly what’s inside. We’ll look at each layer and see how it benefits the Layla Hybrid.

Layla Hybrid Construction And Layers

Cover

The cover of the Layla is soft and breathable and, with a quick zip of the zipper, it can be removed for easy cleaning.

Comfort Layers

Moving from the soft side of the Layla downward, the first layer is 2.5” of copper-infused memory foam. Below that, there is a 2” layer of Max Airflow Support Foam with air channels cut into it. Both of these foams work to help make the Layla Hybrid feel exceptionally cool. When sleeping on the firm side, the Layla Hybrid includes 1” of copper-infused memory foam followed by a 1.5” layer of Max Airflow Support Foam for comfort.

Support Layer

In the middle of the Layla Hybrid mattress lies the core of the mattress — 6” of individually-wrapped coils with a reinforced edge support system. This coil system adds a lot of support and durability to the Layla Hybrid.

Mattress Height

The Layla Hybrid mattress is 13” tall.

Layla Hybrid Mattress Performance

We put the Layla Hybrid mattress through a range of tests to assess its performance with regards to temperature regulation, motion transfer, edge support, and more. Let’s see how it did!

Sleeping Hot Or Cold

The Layla Hybrid mattress should sleep cool as it contains copper-infused memory foam, and this should help with heat-dissipation. Additionally, the mattress features air channels and coils that should promote airflow throughout the Layla Hybrid.

Motion Transfer

The slow-moving memory foam in the Layla Hybrid comfort layers does a good job of absorbing motion, so this mattress could be a suitable option for couples who don’t want to disturb each other during the night.

Edge Support

While sitting near the edge of the Layla Hybrid, the mattress collapsed a fair amount. Those who enjoy sleeping near the edge or sitting on the edge while getting ready in the morning may not feel very secure on the Layla Hybrid mattress.

Layla Hybrid Mattress - Edge Support

Durability

The coils should add some more life to the Layla Hybrid mattress. Coils are usually more durable than other materials. The Layla Hybrid should be a long-term investment.

Off-Gassing

We noticed a faint smell when unboxing the Layla Hybrid mattress. It is necessary to wait 24 or 48 hours as the mattress off-gasses.

Noise

We didn’t notice any notable sound with the Layla Hybrid mattress. However, it is possible that the coils could begin making noise after years of use.

Sex

The hybrid model offers a mixture of foam and coils that provide a good balance of comfort, support, breathability and bounce. Because of its hybrid make, the Layla Hybrid should be a good mattress for sex.

Complaints

Although the Layla Hybrid mattress has cooling copper infusion layers, it may still be too warm for people who naturally sleep very hot because of the memory foam construction. If you sleep exceptionally hot, you may want to check out our list of best cooling mattresses instead.

How Does The Layla Hybrid Compare To Other Mattresses?

Those who are considering the Layla Hybrid probably wonder how it compares to the original Layla mattress. The Layla Hybrid costs more than the Layla, so is it really worth the extra money?

Compare the Layla Hybrid to other mattresses on our mattress comparison page.

Layla Hybrid Vs. Layla Mattress Comparison

The Layla and the Layla Hybrid vary in their construction. The original Layla is an all-foam mattress while the Layla Hybrid is made with both coils and foam. However, both mattresses contain cooling elements like copper-infused memory foam and both mattresses are flippable, offering two firmnesses in one.

The coils are the biggest difference between the Layla Hybrid and the original Layla. Because of the coils, the Layla Hybrid should give much more support than the original Layla, and the hybrid model should be a better match for heavier people who have more support needs.

The coils should also make the Layla Hybrid mattress a better option for hot sleepers as they allow for more airflow than the polyfoam found at the core of the original Layla mattress. Additionally, the coils should add more life to the Layla Hybrid mattress as they are typically more durable than polyfoam. While the Layla Hybrid may cost more, it should be a better long-term investment.

While the construction may add various perks to the Layla Hybrid, the original Layla might be a bit better for people who want something softer or firmer. The soft side of the original Layla is a 5.5/10, and the firm side is closer to an 8/10. The Layla Hybrid, by comparison, has a 6/10 soft side and a 7.5/10 firm side. Side sleepers who want extra pressure relief or stomach sleepers who need more support might prefer the original Layla.

When choosing between the Layla Hybrid and the original Layla, it ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and support needs.

  • Heavier stomach sleepers who require extra support.
  • People looking for a great mattress for the money that will be a good long-term investment.
