As a company, Amerisleep is all about options. For years, they have offered a line of five memory foam mattresses with five different firmnesses, and they have made it easy for fans of memory foam to find the perfect mattress.

Recently, they released their line of hybrid mattresses. These also vary in firmness, from the firm AS1 Hybrid to the super-soft AS5 Hybrid. Right in the middle, we have the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress, a comfortable hybrid that is not-too-firm and not-too-soft.

I enjoyed my experience with the original Amerisleep AS3 mattress, and I was interested to see how coils would improve the mattress. Read on for my full Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress review!

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid Might Be A Good Fit For …

  • People who want a medium-firm mattress. The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress is a mattress that is not too soft and not too firm. It is smack dab in the middle of Amerisleep’s line of mattresses, so fans of medium-firm mattresses should check it out.
  • Combination sleepers. The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress features a zoned construction and offers good comfort and support. Those who switch positions at night should find it to be a good match.
  • Those who want a balance of comfort and support. The Amerisleep Hybrid AS3 is a medium-firm, hybrid mattress that features soft foam and supportive coils. Those who need both comfort and support will find the AS3 to be a great fit.
  • Fans of memory foam who don’t want to sleep hot or get stuck. The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress has some of that foam feel, but it is also responsive and breathable. Those who love memory foam will like the feel of the mattress, but won’t be getting trapped or overheating at night.

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid Might Not Be A Good Fit For …

  • Those who want an extra firm or extra soft mattress. Those who prefer something on either end of the firmness spectrum aren’t going to find the AS3 to be the best match. People who want something firm should look at the AS1 or AS1, and people who want something soft should consider the AS4 or AS5.
  • Stomach sleepers. Those who sleep primarily on their stomachs might not get enough support from the Amerisleep AS3. They might want to go for the firmer models such as the AS1 or AS2 to get the proper amount of support.
  • Side sleepers. While the AS3 does offer decent pressure relief, people who sleep just on their side will feel better pressure relief on their shoulders and hips by going with the AS4 or AS5.
  • Fans of a pure memory foam feel. While the AS3 does feature memory foam, it is more responsive, and the coils add some bounce to the mattress as well. Those who want to slowly sink deep into their mattress might not love the feel of the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid.

Construction Overview

  • The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress is 12” tall.
  • The cover is soft, breathable, and woven with a material called Celliant.
  • The first layer is 3” of Bio-Pur foam.
  • Below that, there is a layer of zoned pocketed coils.
  • A foam encasement surrounds the coils.
  • The coils rest on a thin layer of foundational foam.

Construction Takeaways

  • The Amerisleep Hybrid mattresses come in five different models and range from the firmest AS1 Hybrid to the softest AS5 Hybrid model. The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid I reviewed is right in the middle of their firmness scale. Read our full Amerisleep mattress buying guide to see how they all compare!
  • The Celliant found in the cover has a lot to offer sleepers. First, studies have shown that it can improve blood flow and speed up muscle recovery. Second, it can pull heat away from the body, making for a cooler night of sleep.
  • Amerisleep’s proprietary Bio-Pur foam is a bio-based, open-celled foam that won’t trap heat the way many types of memory foam are known to do. This will also add some cooling to the Amerisleep Hybrid mattress as will the airflow-promoting coil system.
  • The Bio-Pur foam is also more responsive than standard memory foam. People often complain about getting stuck in memory foam mattresses, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to change positions on the Amerisleep Hybrid.
  • The foam encasement is designed to add solid edge support to the Amerisleep Hybrid mattress. It is meant to keep the mattress from collapsing when people sit or lie down near the edge.
  • The coils feature a zoned support system that makes the center of the mattress firmer than the rest. Basically, the mattress will feel more supportive under the lumbar area when people are back sleeping and softer under the shoulder and hips when they are side sleeping. Stomach sleepers should also feel extra support under their center mass.
  • The combination of foam and coils provides the Amerisleep Hybrid with a great balance of comfort and support.

Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid Vs Original Amerisleep AS3

Until recently, Amerisleep only offered all-foam versions of its five mattresses. Now, they have hybrid versions of the AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4, and AS5, but the addition of coils does add a few hundred dollars to the price tag. So, if someone is looking at the original AS3 mattress and AS3 Hybrid, which should they choose?

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid has some serious advantages over the original AS3. First off, the coils are more supportive than the base foam found in the original AS3. This means the Hybrid mattress should be a better match for heavier people and those who have more support needs. Second, the coils add some real durability to the mattress. While the Hybrid will cost more, it should be a better long-term investment.

The mixture of coils and soft foam also gives the Hybrid a better balance of comfort and support. This makes it a better option for back sleepers and combination sleepers. Finally, the coils allow for more airflow, so the Hybrid should be a more breathable, cooler-sleeping mattress.

Now, if these advantages aren’t too important to someone, they could save money by choosing the original Amerisleep AS3. It really depends on what he or she is looking for.

Firmness And Feel

As I wrote above, the AS3 Hybrid is Amerisleep’s not-too-firm and not-too-soft model. So, it’s not surprising that the mattress felt like a 6.5/10, right about medium-firm. The top 3″ layer of Bio-Pur foam is very soft but, pushing in, I can easily feel the firmer support layers beneath.

The AS3 Hybrid has a great balance of comfort and support and thus is a perfect match for back sleeping. My hips sink into the foam comfort layer just the right amount, and the foam also provides some good contouring. Also, the zoning in the coils is adding even more support under the lumbar area.

Moving to my side, the memory foam is relieving a good amount of pressure on my shoulders and hips. However, I am still feeling a bit of pressure, and those who sleep just on their side might want to look at the AS4 Hybrid or AS5 Hybrid.

Stomach sleeping, the mattress is surprisingly supportive. That being said, anyone who sleeps just on their stomach might want to select one of Amerisleep’s firmer models.

Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid - Firmness And Feel

With its hybrid construction, the AS3 Hybrid allows me to sink in, but not too much. Also, the memory foam on top is very responsive, so it doesn’t have too much of that slow-moving fell. All told, the mattress has a balanced feel, and it is very easy to move around on the AS3.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is something that is extremely important for couples to consider. They want to make sure that each partner can move around at night without disturbing the other. When it comes to isolating this motion, memory foam is one of the best materials out there. Just looking at the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid, I expected it to perform well.

To test out the motion transfer on the mattress, I first placed a glass of water in the center. I then pressed into the other areas of the mattress in an attempt to disturb the water. I really didn’t see that motion transfer to the water glass and make it shake.

Also, I lay down on the Amerisleep and asked Marten to move around on the other side. He got in and out of bed, moved around, and changed positions, but he did not disturb me.

These results let me know the AS3 Hybrid should be a good mattress for couples.

Edge Support

Edge support is also something that couples should keep in mind. A mattress with good edge support will let both partners sleep all the way toward the edge without falling off.

To test out the edge support on the Amerisleep, I sat down on the edge. The mattress collapsed just a bit, but I can feel the foam edge support system helping me stay upright. When I lie down near the edge of the AS3 Hybrid, I also don’t feel like I am going to roll off the mattress and onto the ground.

Overall, the edge support is pretty impressive.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

Finding the right mattress has a lot to do with one’s size and weight. Since I am 5’9” and 160 lbs, about medium-weight, I thought it was a good idea to get the perspective of a larger sleeper. So, I asked Marten, who weighs 250 lbs, to try out the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid and give us his opinion.

While Joe thought this was a 6.5/10, I thought it was closer to a 7/10 because my weight is causing me to sink further into the mattress than Joe did.

I feel like the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is a good fit for a larger back sleeper like myself. The mattress has a great balance of comfort and support, so my hips are sinking in the right amount and the zoned coils are supporting me in all the right areas.

Side sleeping on the Amerisleep AS3, I am feeling some pressure on my shoulders and my hips. Again, I am pressing pretty far into the mattress, so I am hitting those support layers beneath. I have tried the AS4 all-foam model, and I definitely felt better pressure relief on that mattress.

The mattress is too soft for me when I am stomach sleeping and, as Joe said, I would probably consider the AS1 or AS2. Also, our readers should check out my list of the best mattresses for heavy people.

Unboxing The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid Mattress

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress comes in a standard cardboard box and is shipped straight to customers’ doors. Begin by asking a friend to help move the AS3 Hybrid inside and into the bedroom. The box is quite heavy, and it is very difficult for one person to move it by themselves.

Next. open the top of the box, and take out the rolled-up mattress. Place the roll on the bed frame or foundation and then begin to cut through the plastic. Do this carefully, and don’t cut into the mattress and damage it. I usually recommend going one layer of plastic at a time to be safe.

The AS3 Hybrid mattress has coils in it, so it will pop open very quickly. Clear the plastic away, and then give the mattress 24 to 48 hours to fully expand and off-gas.

What Makes The AS3 Hybrid Mattress Stand Out?

  • The mattress is one of five hybrid models from Amerisleep and offers the best balance of comfort and support.
  • The AS3 Hybrid mattress boasts many cooling features and should be a great match for hot sleepers.
  • The mattress is quite responsive, so it shouldn’t make sleepers feel trapped.
  • The AS3 Hybrid mattress should be a great match for those who switch positions at night.

The AS3 Hybrid is another great mattress from Amerisleep and should be a good fit for combination sleepers, hot sleepers, and those who need more support.

It comes with free shipping and returns, a 100-night sleep trial, and a 20-year warranty. Amerisleep offers many other models, including five all-foam mattresses and numerous accessories.

How long will the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress last?

Of course, the life of any mattress will depend on the size of the owner and how much the individual uses it. However, based on the materials and construction of the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid, it should last for between seven and eight years.

Will the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress sleep cool?

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid should be a cooler-sleeping mattress. Its Celliant cover will help dissipate body heat, and its Bio-Pur foam is quite breathable. The coils will also promote airflow through the mattress so that it does not trap too much heat.

Which is better, an Amerisleep memory foam mattress or an Amerisleep hybrid mattress?

Neither model of mattress is necessarily better than the other, and it depends on what shoppers are looking for.

Those who want to save money and also sink more into their mattress will prefer the Amerisleep memory foam mattresses. Those who need more support and don’t want to sink so far into their mattress will prefer an Amerisleep hybrid mattress.
