Amerisleep AS5 Mattress Firmness And Feel

When you’re considering any mattress, two of the most important elements to look at are firmness and feel. These factors will say a lot about whether the mattress is a good match for your sleep needs and preferences. So let’s take a close look at the firmness and feel on the Amerisleep AS5!

How Firm Is The Amerisleep AS5?

We ranked the Amerisleep AS5 around a 5.5/10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5/10, so this mattress is notably softer than average. It’s also the softest model in the Amerisleep line.

Note that firmness is a bit of a subjective measurement. Depending on your weight, you might rank this mattress a touch firmer or softer than we did.

Sleeping On The Amerisleep AS5 Mattress

We felt well supported while back sleeping on the Amerisleep AS5. Even though this is a very soft mattress, it also contains a layer of Active Flex foam that adds extra support to the top of the mattress. This added support means most back sleepers shouldn’t feel like their hips are sinking too far into the top layers.

Not surprisingly, we found the Amerisleep AS5 to be a great fit for side sleeping. We sank into the thick comfort layers and felt pressure melt away around the shoulder and hip.

Amerisleep AS5 - Side Sleeping

Even with the Active Flex foam layer, the Amerisleep AS5 proved too soft for stomach sleeping. Our hips bowed into the mattress and pulled the spine out of alignment. Stomach sleepers will want to consider a firmer mattress, such as the Amerisleep AS1 or AS2.

What Does The Amerisleep AS5 Feel Like?

The Amerisleep line of mattresses all feature a similar balanced foam feel that is both comfortable and responsive. This holds true for the Amerisleep AS5. It’s soft and plush, so you will sink into the comfort layers a fair amount. But thanks to the responsive design, you shouldn’t feel stuck in this mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

Most average-weight back sleepers should enjoy a balance of comfort and support on the Amerisleep AS5. However, note that folks who weigh closer to 230 pounds might find their hips sink in a bit too much and pull the spine out of alignment. Folks in this category might want to look at one of the firmer Amerisleep models. Average-weight side sleepers across the weight spectrum should enjoy excellent pressure relief on this mattress. Average-weight stomach sleepers will probably find that this bed feels too soft to promote spinal alignment.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

It’s unlikely that heavyweight back and stomach sleepers will obtain appropriate support on this model. A more supportive mattress is best for heavyweight sleepers. Heavyweight side sleepers, on the other hand, should find that the Amerisleep AS5 is an excellent match. They’ll enjoy plenty of pressure relief around the shoulder and hip.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

The Amerisleep AS5 might feel comfortable to some lightweight back sleepers, but many folks will prefer the firmer AS3 or AS2. Lightweight side sleepers should enjoy great pressure relief on the Amerisleep AS5. As with average-weight and heavyweight sleepers, lightweight stomach sleepers will probably find this bed too soft and will want to look for a firmer mattress for stomach sleepers.

Amerisleep AS5 Mattress Construction

Now that you’re clear about what it’s like to sleep on top of the Amerisleep AS5, let’s take a peek under the cover! We’ll review this mattress’s construction and materials with an eye toward performance.

Cover

The Amerisleep AS5 boasts a Refresh Cooling Cover, which is designed to feel cool to the touch and improve circulation.

Comfort Layers

The top comfort layer on the Amerisleep AS5 is made from 3” of the brand’s Bio-Pur foam, which is open-celled and more breathable than conventional memory foam. This material is also found in the other Amerisleep models.

Beneath the Bio-Pur foam, there’s a layer that’s unique to the AS5 model: 2” of Active Flex material, which is soft and bouncy. This layer helps make the mattress more supportive and responsive.

Amerisleep AS5 - Construction

Support Layer

Underneath the comfort layers, there’s a base layer made from 7” of Bio-Core foam. This high-density foam provides structure and support for the mattress overall. (The hybrid version of the Amerisleep AS5 contains coils in its support layer.)

Mattress Height

The Amerisleep AS5 is a relatively tall mattress, standing at 15”. That’s thanks in part to the thick comfort layers.

Amerisleep AS5 Mattress Performance

You know a lot about the Amerisleep AS5 now, but there are still a few key factors to assess! We put this mattress through a range of tests with regard to temperature regulation, motion transfer, edge support, and more. To see how it stacks up to other mattresses, make sure to read our Amerisleep mattress comparisons.

Sleeping Hot Or Cold

The cooling cover and the open-celled Bio-Pur foam help this mattress sleep cooler than some memory foam mattresses. Still, all-foam mattresses are known for trapping heat, and that’s a possibility on this mattress.

Motion Transfer

Even though this mattress is fairly responsive, it still does a great job of minimizing motion transfer. The thick layer of Bio-Pur foam absorbs motion and helps contain it to one side of the mattress, so partners are less likely to disturb each other if they move around in the night. This could be a great mattress for couples.

Edge Support

We found the edge support on the Amerisleep AS5 to be decent but not phenomenal. The edges do collapse a bit when we sit or lie down near the edge. If edge support is particularly important to you, consider the firmer AS3, AS2, or AS1.

Durability

This is a very durable mattress, which is reflected in its longer-than-usual warranty.

Off-Gassing

We did observe some off-gassing from the Amerisleep AS5. This should dissipate within a few days.

Noise

The Amerisleep AS5 is not a noisy mattress at all. We didn’t observe any notable noise from this bed.

Sex

When people seek a mattress for sex, they’re usually looking for a bed that makes it easy to move around. Based on that criterion, the Amerisleep AS5 is a decent match. Even though it’s a plush mattress, its responsive nature makes it easy to change positions.

Amerisleep Company Policies

Before you buy an AS5, you may want to better understand some of the policies associated with it–we’ll explain the most important ones below.

Warranty

The AS5 comes with a 20-year limited warranty. This is extra-long compared to most other warranties we see. If you want to better understand what a mattress warranty is and how to understand the terms of one, you can read our full mattress warranty guide.

What you should know about the AS5 mattress warranty is the first 10 years is a full replacement warranty (Amerisleep will replace or repair the mattress free-of-charge for defects covered under the warranty) and the second 10 years is a prorated warranty (meaning you will have to cover a portion of the costs).

Sleep Trial

When you buy an AS5 mattress, you automatically get a 100-night sleep trial period. Amerisleep gives you 100 nights to sleep on your mattress and decide if it’s a good fit for you.

Return Policy

If the AS5 isn’t working out for you, you can return it for a full refund during your trial period. Though, Amerisleep does ask that you wait 30 days to truly give yourself a chance to break in the mattress and try it out before returning it.

How Does The Amerisleep AS5 Compare To Other Mattresses?

We’ll compare the AS5 to a similar mattress model offered from Amerisleep–the AS4.

Amerisleep AS5 Vs AS4

Amerisleep offers a line of five memory foam mattresses of varying firmnesses. This line includes the AS1 (the firmest) to the AS5 (the softest). The AS4 mattress is the second-softest mattress in the line, so it may be a better fit for someone who wants a medium-soft mattress, but not a super soft mattress like the AS5.

The AS4 and AS5 have many similarities. Both mattresses are very soft, they are good for side sleepers, and they are not an ideal match for heavier people or people who need a lot of support. One key difference is their price point–the AS4 is more affordable than the AS5. However, the AS5 offers a more advanced construction making it worth the extra costs.

Who Should Get The Amerisleep AS5?

  • People who want a very soft mattress
  • People who want a more luxurious mattress with advanced support and responsiveness

Who Should Get The Amerisleep AS4?

  • People who want a medium-soft mattress
  • People on a tighter budget
