Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Mattress Topper Review

Mattresses often have tall, sturdy coils to offer support while we sleep. And most of the time, when mattresses are too firm, we turn to toppers made entirely out of foam to soften them. But there is a topper out there that utilizes coils and foam to both soften your mattress, but keep you supported while you sleep on it. I’m talking about the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil mattress topper.

In my unbiased Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil mattress topper review, I’ll cover everything you need to know about this topper. I’ll go over my testing experience, the materials used, company policies, and more.

Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Mattress Topper Firmness & Feel

Let’s go over how you can expect the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil mattress topper to change your bed’s firmness and feel.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Topper’s Firmness?

Brooklyn Bedding offers this topper in soft and firm options. For this review, my sample was the soft version. I have to say, this topper is quite soft and plush. If you’re dealing with an extra firm mattress, this topper should help soften it significantly.

A hand pressing into the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Mattress topper to show off how firm it is.

At Mattress Clarity, we score a mattress’s firmness on a scale from one to 10, with one being very soft, 10 being extra firm, and 6.5 being medium-firm. Because this is a soft mattress topper, I think it could soften a mattress by one and a half points.

The mattress I tested on was a tall, medium-firm, or 6.5/10, hybrid mattress. The microcoil topper made this mattress feel more like a 5/10.

What Does the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Topper Feel Like?

Because this topper is mostly foam, it felt quite soft and plush. I sunk into the foam a good bit, but the coils and dense support foam kept me from bottoming out. It has that slow-moving quality that most foam toppers have, but it did spring back into place a bit faster than something like the squishy, slow-moving TEMPUR material found in most Tempur-Pedic products.

While this is great news for those with firm beds, those with mobility issues may find themselves getting stuck in the topper. This topper is on the thicker side, and while some may find it easy to move around on, when I think about the other toppers I’ve tested, there have been ones that are much easier to move around on. Something with latex like the Plushbeds mattress topper or the Avocado mattress topper should work well for those who need to move around. I’ll explain some different choices for toppers in my comparison section later in this review.

Sleeping on the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Topper

My initial test with toppers is quickly changing between each sleeping position to get a general feel for how the topper will perform before settling into longer tests.

Starting out on my back, I felt my hips sink into the topper a bit, and I felt the foam cradle my body. This is a thick topper, and with the coils and high-density foam at the bottom of the topper, I felt supported in this position. So, I think back sleepers who want to sink into memory foam should find what they need here.

A man sleeps on his back while resting on top of the Brooklyn Bedding MIcrocoil Mattress topper.

Then, I moved over to my side. Here’s where the topper really began to shine. I felt little to no pressure around my hips. I felt a small amount of pressure on my shoulder, but not enough to where I think it would be a problem if I were to sleep on my side with this topper every night.

As for stomach sleeping, I felt comfortable, but after a minute or two, I began to feel a strain on my lower back. I wouldn’t recommend using this topper for more than a quick nap if you’re a stomach sleeper.

I should note, I’ve had an easier time switching positions than other toppers. I could change positions somewhat with ease, but if you have mobility issues, you may feel stuck. Getting in and out of bed was a little challenging to me as well because of the thickness and feeling of the foam. I wouldn’t recommend this topper to those who don’t stay in one spot during their sleep.

30-60 Min Nap with the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Topper

I’m a strict side sleeper, so I completed the nap test lying on my side. The minor pressure I initially felt in my shoulder didn’t develop into any pain, so it could have just been my body adjusting to a new topper.

A man resting on his side while on top of the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Mattress Topper

I’m a hot sleeper, and the GLACIOTEX cover felt very cool when I first climbed into bed. As I settled into sleep, I did feel the cover warm up, but it was a comfortable warmth. It didn’t feel like my body heat was being reflected back to me. I never felt uncomfortably hot while using this topper.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Back and side sleepers who have a bed that’s too firm should find adequate pressure relief, body contouring, and additional comfort with this topper. They’ll sink a bit into the top of the foam, but it should feel comfortable. The coils and high density foam at the bottom of the topper will be enough to keep them from bottoming out.

Stomach sleepers, however, should stick with a firm mattress. The soft version of this topper is not supportive enough to keep their hips elevated. This is likely to cause their spine to dip out of alignment and could cause lower back pain.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

As a heavyweight sleeper myself, I would recommend this topper to my fellow side sleepers. This is a thick enough topper that side sleepers should still feel supported by. You’ll sink more into the topper, but again, the coils and high density foam will prevent you from feeling the mattress underneath. This should also work well for back sleepers who need the additional comfort and cushioning.

Most heavyweight stomach sleepers should stick to using no topper at all, or using a firm topper if your bed is sagging. This will help keep their hips elevated and their spine in a neutral alignment.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lb

Lightweight back and side sleepers should do well with this topper, especially if they want to sink into memory foam. Lightweight side sleepers should feel virtually no pressure on their shoulders and hips because of how thick the topper is, and back sleepers should feel supported.

As is the case with everyone else, lightweight stomach sleepers should sleep on a firm mattress, or firm topper to avoid their spine dipping out of alignment.

Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Topper Construction

Let’s break down the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil topper by its materials.

Cover

The microcoil topper has an outer cover made from a polyester material called GLACIOTEX. This material is intended for temperature regulation and feels cool to the touch. In each of the corners you’ll find an elastic band that helps attach the topper to your mattress. The cover is removable with a zipper.

Comfort Layer

The main comfort material is composed of three layers. On the top you have a 1.5” layer of what Brooklyn Bedding calls premium comfort foam. This is the foam that’s going to soften the top of your mattress, add some pressure relief, and contour to your body.

Underneath that foam you’ll find a .75” layer of micro coils. The coils here help with both body contouring and support. As you press into the foam, the coils will help keep the foam in place as it conforms to your body. The bottom layer of the topper is a 1.5” layer of high density foam. This will help you from bottoming out of the topper.

Topper Height

The Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil mattress topper is 3.75” tall.

Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Topper Performance

Let’s cover a few more performance factors for the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil mattress topper.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

As mentioned above, Brooklyn Bedding uses something called a GLACIOTEX material for this topper’s outer cover. This material is designed for temperature regulation and feels cool to the touch. During my testing, I never felt like I was going to overheat on this topper, despite the main comfort layer being made of foam (which has been known to trap heat). Because of this, if you’re a fellow hot sleeper, I don’t think you should worry about feeling too hot on this topper.

Durability

This topper combines memory foam and coils and comes inside of a removable cover. Because of this, the topper should last a good while. Brooklyn Bedding mentions that the foam is durable and should be anti-sag as well. Considering that this topper comes with a 3-year warranty, I imagine that this topper should easily last that long with good care.

Off-Gassing

The Microcoil topper was sent compressed in a cardboard box. Once I removed the packaging, the topper expanded to full size rather quickly. However, some might notice a chemical smell, which is a result of the compression process. I suggest letting the topper air out for about 24-48 hours to let this smell dissipate.

Cleaning

This topper does come with an outer, removable cover that can be machine-washed. Brooklyn Bedding recommends washing the cover in a cold water cycle with a mild detergent. From there, let it hang dry.

Allergens

The microcoil topper is not listed as a hypoallergenic product. However, the materials used for this product aren’t known to attract or trap allergens in your sleep environment. Additionally, with a machine-washable cover, it’s easy to keep it clean.

Company Policies

Let’s take a look at the company policies Brooklyn Bedding offers on the Microcoil topper.

Warranty

The Microcoil topper comes with a 3-year warranty. Considering the materials, and with good care, I expect this topper to last the length of its warranty.

Sleep Trial

From the day the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil mattress topper arrives on your doorstep you’ll have 30 days to make return or exchange decisions.

Return Policy

If, during the 30-day window, you decide that the microcoil topper is not for you, you can issue a return and Brooklyn Bedding will offer a full refund and a prepaid shipping label.

Brooklyn Bedding also offers free shipping on all orders as well.

How Does the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Mattress Topper Compare to Other Toppers?

Caught between multiple options? Let’s compare the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil mattress topper with two toppers that feature different materials from Avocado and Nolah.

Brooklyn Bedding vs Avocado

Foam is a popular option for mattress toppers, but there’s traditional memory foam, which is a synthetic material, and then there’s latex foam, which is a more natural alternative. Avocado makes a mattress topper out of latex foam, and it will feel much different than the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil topper.

Latex foam is springy and bouncy. This makes it easy to move around on, and you’ll sleep more “on top” of the topper, rather than sink into it like you would on the Brooklyn Bedding topper. Because of this, combination sleepers should be able to move around easily on this topper. Plus, it’s full of certified organic materials, which could be important to some.

A man lies on his back on a mattress topper.

The Brooklyn Bedding topper is very thick and made out of synthetic foam. Sleepers will sink into this topper, but that could be what some need in order to soften their mattress. The main comfort layer also comes inside of a removable cover which can be machine-washed. The Avocado topper comes inside of a cover as well, but it is not removable and recommended to be spot-clean only.

Brooklyn Bedding vs Nolah

The height of a topper can impact how much it will adjust the firmness of your mattress. Thinner toppers like the Nolah mattress topper (2” thick) are a good choice for those who aren’t totally unsatisfied with their mattress, but could use some additional comfort. The thin topper and responsive foam makes this topper easy to move around on and a great choice for combination sleepers.

However, if you’re dealing with an incredibly firm mattress and need some additional pressure relief, go for the Brooklyn Bedding topper. This is almost 4” thick and the foam will contour around your body. The coils will prevent you from bottoming out of the topper, but side sleepers who need pressure relief will find just that with this topper.

Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Mattress Topper FAQs

What’s the best mattress topper?

The best mattress topper will look different for back, side, and stomach sleepers. Back sleepers do well with toppers that provide additional comfort, support, and body contouring. Side sleepers need thicker toppers to offer pressure relief for their shoulders and hips, while stomach sleepers do best with no topper at all or a firm mattress topper to keep their hips elevated.

Be sure to check out our full list of the best mattress toppers to find a topper that fits your needs.

How long will the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil mattress topper last?

I expect around three to four years. The foam used is high-quality and is designed to fight sagging. Plus, the coils should also help keep any indents from forming in the topper. All of this comes inside of a removable outer cover, which helps protect the foam. With all this in mind, this topper should last several years with good care.

What if I don’t like my Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil mattress topper?

You’ll have 30 days from the day the topper arrives to make return or exchange decisions. Keep in mind that it may take several days to get adjusted to your topper. But so long that you issue a return within the 30-day window, Brooklyn Bedding will offer a full refund and free return shipping.
