How We Tested and Selected the Mattresses
Two bodies heat up faster than one, so finding a mattress that helps both partners stay comfortable throughout the night without overheating is crucial. If you tend to sleep hot or share the bed with someone who runs warmer, a mattress with good airflow and cooling technology will help regulate temperature and ensure a more restful, sweat-free sleep.
We grade cooling on a scale of 1 to 5, and mattresses that perform well on our surface-temperature tests get a 3.5 out of 5 or above. Every mattress on this list earned at least that score, with the majority scoring above 4.
If you find yourself disturbed by your partnerโs tossing and turning at night (or if you are the wiggler in question), then you need to find a mattress with good motion isolation. These mattresses minimize motion transfer to ensure that one partnerโs movements wonโt disturb the other. We grade this category on a scale of 1 to 5, and only included beds on this list if they earned at least a 4 in motion transfer or in responsiveness, which is also important to couples but is often considered motion transferโs opposite.
Responsive mattresses quickly adjust to your bodyโs movements, making them ideal for couples who enjoy a little more bounce in their bed. This responsiveness is great for combination sleepers because it makes it easier for them to switch between different sleeping positions. Plus, a responsive mattress is great for sex.
The ideal mattress for couples should help you and your other half stay cool, comfortable, and undisturbed by each otherโs movements. Many couples also prefer more responsive mattresses, as the additional bounce helps with more ahem physical activities.
For that reason, I prioritized models with superior cooling, motion isolation, and responsiveness while making this list.
That said, my fellow mattress testers and I also look at several other aspects of a bedโs performance, including durability, edge support, and more. We evaluate and score these factors using specialized technology as well as firsthand accounts of how a bed feels to testers with different body types.
Once we have all those scores, we calculate the bedโs overall score using a weighted formula. This overall score is a good indicator of a mattressโs general quality, and is always a number out of 5.
As we decide which mattresses to feature on any roundup, we only include beds with an overall score of 3.5 out of 5 or higher. Even if a mattress does certain things well, we wonโt point you towards it if it falls below this baseline.
I also want to acknowledge that your choice of mattress is only one part of an optimal shared sleep routine. According to Dr. Shelby Harris, a clinical psychologist who specializes in sleep medicine, regularly losing sleep when sharing a bed as a couple can be a health concern as well as a difficult emotional ordeal. The Nectar Luxe is the brandโs most luxurious mattress. This bed has many cooling features that help dissipate body heat. Thanks to its soft feel, this mattress works well for many side sleepers. That said, this mattress isnโt supportive enough for many heavyweight people and stomach sleepers.

- Cooling. This mattress is cool-to-the-touch when you first lay down, and it stays surprisingly cool despite its memory foam layers.
- Pressure Relief. Youโll sink into the foam layers of the Nectar Luxe, which can allow for contouring around the hips and shoulders for great pressure relief in the side position.
- Response. This mattress has a true memory foam feel, so it isnโt very responsive. This can make it somewhat difficult to change sleep positions efficiently.
Why the Nectar Luxe is Best for Motion Isolation
If youโre easily disturbed by your partnerโs movements at night, the Nectar Luxe might be the key to avoiding couples therapy. We tested this mattressโs motion isolation by placing a glass of water on the bed and seeing if it would spill over after rolling around while next to it. The glass remained nearly still while moving around on the bed. During our partner test, we did notice some motion transfer, but our testers said they didnโt think it would be enough to disturb their sleep entirely.
While the Nectar Luxeโs memory foam layers can make it difficult to change sleep positions efficiently, our chief medical product tester, Dr. Hannah Habeeb, DPT, says she recommends this bed for folks with hip and shoulder pain because the foam contours around key areas to better relieve pressure.
The Nectar Luxe also shines in cooling earning a 4.5/5 from our testers. After five minutes of resting on the mattress, its temperature rose by just over 6 degrees according to the thermal gun test. Couples in the market for a hybrid mattress should find what theyโre looking for in the Helix Dusk Luxe. This mattress performed very well across most of our essential categories for couples. Our testers gave the Dusk Luxe a perfect 5/5 for both cooling and responsiveness, along with at least a 4/5 in every other tested category. This mattress is the luxury upgrade of the standard Helix Dusk model and features enhanced lumbar support, a cooling cover, and premium pillow topper.
Hybrid mattresses typically struggle to contain movement to one side of the bed, but the Helix Dusk Luxe is the exception to that rule. Our testers said they could feel some motion transfer during the partners test, but they were surprised with how much motion the bed absorbed given its firmness. Another expert tester complimented the Dusk Luxeโs overall feel (rating the firmness at 8/10), as well as its edge support (which we rated at 4.6/5). - Saatva Rx โ The Saatva Rx is a great bed for couples looking for a luxury mattress that works well for back pain, but it comes with a hefty price tag (over $3,000 for a queen-size mattress). I chose its less-expensive-but-still-luxurious counterpart, the Saatva Classic, because I wanted to give couples the best value for their money. However, if the Saatva Rx is well within your budget, I think you will be thoroughly impressed with it.
- Nectar Classic โ The Nectar Classic is the brandโs flagship mattress and a popular all-foam bed. Given its price and performance, itโs easy to see why. A mattress that balances you and your partnerโs needs can improve your sleep quality and overall health. A 2020 study showed that sleeping next to a partner correlates with getting more REM sleep (and less fragmented REM sleep, too!). Cooling
Research tells us that falling asleep is associated with a marked dip in body temperature, so cooling is a top priority for couples and hot sleepers alike. You and your partner will want a mattress that disperses body heat and promotes airflow. My colleagues and I examine a mattressโs materials to look for breathable covers, innerspring coils, and cooling gels. We also use a temperature gun to measure how much the mattress temperature increases after weโve lain on it for 7 minutes. This helps us determine how well the mattress regulates heat and keeps sleepers comfortable throughout the night.
Response
We measure response to determine how quickly a mattress adjusts to changes in sleeping position. A responsive mattress will allow you and your partner to move around freely and easily, while preventing you from feeling โstuck.โ Responsiveness is particularly important for combination sleepers (those who change positions frequently during the night). We test how well the mattress bounces back after pressure is applied, ensuring you can move freely without feeling trapped.
Motion Transfer
We test for motion transfer to determine how well the mattress absorbs movement and prevents it from moving across the bed. This is especially important for couples or light sleepers. One way we test this is by placing a glass of water on one side of the bed while the tester rolls and shifts positions on the opposite side.
