Our Tuft & Needle Original Review in a Nutshell
The Tuft & Needle Original is an affordable, all-foam bed thatโs great for folks who need a simple yet effective mattress. Its medium-firm feel and supportive foams make it a great mattress for back sleeping, but it was also a hit with some of our side-sleeping testers. It earned its highest score for motion isolation, making it a consideration for couples. However, the mattress didnโt give us the robust edge support we wanted, and our heavyweight testers complained of too much sinkageโlikely thanks to the bedโs short profile.
The Tuft & Needle Original mattress is a great affordable pick for folks who want an all-foam mattress with a medium-firm feel. It earned praise for back sleeping and lightweight side sleepers, plus high marks for motion isolation, which couples should appreciate. However, we wouldn't recommend it for heavyweight sleepers or folks looking for strong edge supportโthis mattress is a bit too thin for either.
Tuft & Needle Original Mattress Performance: My Overall Rating
Our testing methodology encompasses everything from how the mattress feels to the company policies that accompany it. Each of these areas gets a rating out of 5, which is then averaged into the final overall score for the mattress. The Tuft & Needle earned a respectable overall rating of 3.9 out of 5.
This number is due to high marks in motion isolation, responsiveness, and customer service, with the bed earning 4s and above. It did score low in edge support and cooling, earning a 2.6 and 3.5, respectively. In the rest of this review, weโll dive deeper into why we rated the mattress this way.

I Recommend the Tuft & Needle Original Forโฆ
- Couples โ The Tuft & Needleโs all-foam construction isolates motion like a pro, perfect for co-sleepers.
- Lightweight sleepers โ This bedโs medium-firm feel offers plenty of sinkage and pressure relief for sleepers under 130 pounds.
- Budget shoppers โ If youโre on a budget and looking for a transitional mattress or a bed for your guest room, this bedโs sub-$1,000 price point is appealing.

I Donโt Recommend the Tuft & Needle Original Forโฆ
- Sleepers who run hot โ The Tuft & Needle scored just average in our cooling tests, and as an all-foam bed, I wouldnโt recommend it for hot sleepers.
- Folks who need strong edge support โ This is where the mattress earned its lowest score, so if you rely on a sturdy perimeter for transfer in and out of bed, Iโd look elsewhere.
- Heavyweight sleepers โ Our heavyweight tester complained of too much sinkage on an older model of the bed, which negatively impacted his spinal alignment in each sleeping position.

How Firm is the Tuft & Needle Original Mattress?

Firmness refers to how plush or hard a mattress feels. Itโs often a subjective measure, but itโs a good indicator when folks are trying to decide whether a mattress fits. Our firmness scale runs from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest.
The Tuft & Needle mattress falls at a 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, which is true medium-firm. โMedium-firm mattresses are my recommendation for most sleepers because they align the spine while still offering some pressure relief,โ explains Dr. Raj Dasgupta, quadruple board-certified pulmonary and sleep specialist.
How Does the Tuft & Needle Original Feel for Different Body Types and Sleeping Positions?
โYour body weight and shape affect how a mattress feels,โ says Dr. Dasgupta. โSleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds tend to think mattresses are firmer than expected, while those over 230 pounds often sink in too far. Either can cause discomfort.โ This means certain beds perform better for certain body types and sleeping positions than others.
As for the Tuft & Needle mattress, this bed was a great match for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers. My colleague Sosha Lewis, an average-weight tester, enjoyed this on her side, but another product expert in the same category didnโt care for it in this position. This was a great reminder of how the feel of a bed is subjective.
Unfortunately, after analyzing a heavyweight testerโs notes of an older model of this mattress and comparing the construction and materials, we donโt think this bed is a match for heavyweight sleepers in any position.
| Sleeper Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
| Light (under 130 lbs) | Excellent | Excellent | Good |
| Average (130-230 lbs) | Good | Excellent | Unpleasant |
| Heavy (over 230 lbs) | Unpleasant | Unpleasant | Unpleasant |
Heavyweight Tester โ 6โ7โ, 270 lbs
โOverall, this bed wasnโt a great fit for me. I felt some serious pressure in all three sleeping positions. If you weigh more than 250 lbs, I would look for a more supportive mattress.โ โ Marten Carlson, testing an older version of this mattress
Average-weight Tester โ 5โ4โ, 165 lbs
โIโm usually not a big all-foam fan, but this struck such a great balance of contouring and support. I wouldnโt want to sleep on this bed every night as a side sleeper, but it would make me happy as a guest.โ โ Sosha Lewis, certified sleep science coach
Lightweight Tester โ 5โ5โ, 130 lbs
โOn my stomach, I felt comfortable and didnโt notice any one area sinking in too much. My chest felt a little pressure, but nothing that would deter me from sleeping in that position.โ โ Riley Otis, mattress expert
Tuft & Needle Original In-Depth Test Results
Pressure Relief
โPressure relief is essential for ensuring comfort,โ says Dr. Dasgupta. โA good mattress for pressure relief will cushion sensitive parts of the body that dig into the mattress.โ These include areas such as the hips, shoulders, lower back, and knees.
To test pressure relief, we have testers representing each weight category lie down on the mattress. They rest on their backs and sides and share their opinion on whether they feel comfortable in each position.
We also use a specialized mat to record where pressure builds up along the body. Using thermal imaging, the mat creates a color-coded outline of the testerโs body. Greens and blues indicate low pressure, while reds and yellows indicate high pressure. More of the former means that a mattress is relieving pressure.
The mat also records the overall pressure buildup across the surface, measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). We compare each testerโs PSI against the average. For side sleepers, the average is 14.58 PSI, while for back sleepers, itโs a bit lower at 12.43 PSI.
Representing our lightweight category was my fellow tester, Riley Otis. She tried side sleeping on the Tuft & Needle first. For this position, her average PSI was 11.14, lower than our average, but still a bit high for sleepers of a lighter weight. Her pressure map results were mostly blue, with a touch of yellow at the hips and red on the shoulder.
โI would recommend this to lightweight side sleepers who like a firmer feel but still want the classic memory foam experience,โ she said. โThere was nice body contouring, but I thought it was maybe a touch too firm on my hip and shoulder joints, as I started to feel pressure building there after a few minutes.โ She ultimately rated side-sleeping pressure relief for lightweight sleepers at a 4/5.

Riley had a much better experience back sleeping. Her pressure map was all blue for this position, and her overall PSI was lower at 9.56. โI felt balanced when back sleeping, and I thought there was enough support to keep me from bottoming out while still cushioning my lumbar spine,โ she explained.
Our average-weight tester had a similar experience to Riley, though she thought the Tuft & Needle had a firmer feel for side sleeping. Still, her pressure map results were favorable: Her PSI was at an acceptable 11.02, and there was only a bit of yellow around her shoulder. โItโs more of a personal preference,โ she noted, rating it at a 3.5/5. This contrasts with average-weight tester Sosha Lewis, who thought the mattress was plenty soft on her side.

This tester had much better luck resting on her back. Her pressure map was fully blue, aside from a yellow spot where her head restedโwhich can easily be corrected with a pillow. Her overall PSI was at an extremely low 8.79. Since she still wasnโt sold on the feel, she rated it at a 4/5 for average-weight back sleepers, noting it was โfineโ for this category.
Conversely, Sosha quite liked the mattress for back sleepers. โI feel very balanced and supported in this position,โ she said. โThereโs plenty of contouring, which contributes to a lack of pressure.โ
These conflicting results stemmed from personal preference; depending on how you carry your weight, you may find the mattress softer or firmer than expected. As a whole, we believe back sleepers should experience ample pressure relief while still maintaining alignment.
We didnโt have the opportunity for a tester over 230 lbs to try out the mattress. But based on heavyweight tester Martenโs notes about a previous iteration of this bed, it wonโt work out well for these sleepers.
โI felt some pressure along my hips and shoulders when I rested on my side,โ he said. โIโm a bigger guy, and that caused me to sink into the top layer quite a bit. I also needed more support when I rested on my back and stomach.โ
These results steered the Tuft & Needle Original toward an overall pressure relief rating of 3.8/5. This is around average, if a little below. Based on this, I wouldnโt choose the Tuft & Needle Original if you have sensitive joints or other pain concerns.
Edge Support
Edge support refers to how well the perimeter of a mattress holds up when bearing weight. A mattress with strong edges has many benefits. You can spread out as much as you like on the surface, use your bed as a second chair, and have extra stability when getting in and out of bed. We also consider robust edge support as a sign of durability, as it shows a mattress is less likely to sag over time.
My colleague Sosha Lewis was responsible for testing the Tuft & Needle Originalโs edge support. Sosha first sat down on the edge of the mattress to gauge its support. It seemed to collapse right beneath her weight. โI could feel the base of the bed frame beneath me,โ she said.
She didnโt find it difficult to get in and out of bed, thanks to the bedโs short 10โณ profile. โI didnโt need assistance, but someone with mobility issues probably would,โ she explained. Based on these results, she gave the seated test a 3/5 rating.

Next, Sosha lay down on the edge of the mattress and cycled through each sleeping position. โI definitely felt more secure when lying down, especially on my back,โ she said. โIt was a big difference from the seated test, but itโs still not something Iโd recommend to couples who want to spread out.โ This test earned another 3/5 rating.
Finally, Sosha performed our weighted edge support test. In this test, we use weight plates to mimic testers of different sizes sitting on the edge of the mattress. Then, we use a tape measure to record how far the mattress sinks. The more it collapses, the worse the edge support.
The results for this test were no better than Soshaโs earlier evaluations. The mattress sank a whopping 5โณ for our lightweight tester, 6.3โณ for our average-weight tester, and 8โณ for our heavyweight tester. This resulted in 3, 3, and 1 ratings, respectively, leading to the bedโs overall edge support score of 2.6/5.
Cooling
Waking up sweaty? A cooling mattress may be in your future. To test whether a mattress works for hot sleepers, we put it through our temperature-regulation test. We use a thermal gun to measure the surface temperature in two instances: first, before anyone has gotten on the bed, and second, after our tester has lain on it for about seven minutes.

When Sosha performed this test for the Tuft & Needle Original, her readings were 68.9 degrees and 77.6 degrees. This 8.7-degree change is fairly high, though not completely unexpected for a foam mattress. As you can see in the chart below, it corresponds with a 3.5/5 rating.
| Less than a 4-degree change | 5/5 |
| 4-6 degree change | 4.5/5 |
| 6-8 degree change | 4/5 |
| 8-10 degree change | 3.5/5 |
| 10-12 degree change | 3/5 |
| 12-14 degree change | 2.5/5 |
| 14-16 degree change | 2/5 |
| 16+ degree change | 1/5 |
Sosha did push back against these results a bit, citing her own experience during her seven-minute nap. โThe cover felt pretty cool at first, and while it didnโt maintain that, I didnโt feel warm lying on it,โ she said. โI was surprised it heated up as much as it did.โ
Still, we wouldnโt recommend the Tuft & Needle for sleepers prone to overheating. These folks might prefer a hybrid mattress, which has coils that allow more airflow.
Motion Isolation
If you constantly wake up to your partner tossing and turning, youโre likely dealing with a mattress that offers poor motion isolation. A bed that isolates motion will absorb movements before they can travel across the surface and cause disturbances.
To test motion transfer, we use two methods. First up is our water glass test. We place the glass on one side of the mattress, then get in and out of the mattress, moving around on the other side. How the water behaves shows us how much motion is felt.
When Sosha got in and out of bed, she barely noticed any movement from the glass. โThe only ripple was from when I plopped down and essentially hit the base and moved the bed about a little,โ she explained. โWhen I was acting like a normal person, it barely rippled at all.โ

Moving around near the water glass also produced similar results. โThe foam seemed to absorb almost all the motion,โ she noted. โItโs kind of a thin mattress, so if you aggressively move, it could cause a little more motion, but for the most part, all good.โ
Our final motion isolation test is our partner test. Sosha had a fellow tester climb into bed alongside her and mimic the nightly movements of a restless bedmate. โI could only feel my partner when he was acting like a tornado,โ she said. โFor the most part, this bed is a monster eating up movement.โ
Sosha thought that the only sleepers who might feel some disturbance are those with a larger-bodied partner or someone who goes into โdeath rolls.โ She ultimately rated each of these tests at 4.5/5, marking the Tuft & Needle Original as a fine bed for couples.
Response
Response and bounce are close cousins. A responsive mattress snaps back into place when you press down or move around on it, which makes repositioning during sleep or sex easier.
To test responsiveness, we switch between all sleeping positions on the surface of the mattress, then give it a rating out of 5
Sosha awarded the Tuft & Needle Original mattress a 4/5 for responsiveness. โDespite it being all-foam and fairly soft on top, it was pretty easy to move around on,โ she said. โThereโs only some sinkage. There may be more for larger-bodied folks, but Iโd still call it good responsiveness.โ
The Tuft & Needle wonโt feel as bouncy as a hybrid or innerspring mattress. So, if youโre after a super-springy mattress, look elsewhere. However, it should still be a solid mattress for combination sleepers.
Sinkage: Deep
Sinkage may sound like a bad thing, but itโs all a matter of personal preference. Do you like to feel hugged and cuddled by your mattress? Then youโll want a bed with more sinkage. Prefer to feel buoyed on the surface? Less sinkage is better.
To measure sinkage, we place a kettlebell on a mattress and use a ruler to measure how far it sinks. The Tuft & Needle sank about 4.5โณ, which weโd consider deep sinkage. However, our testers didnโt find this mattress the most contouring; instead, these results and evaluations make us think that sleepers with a larger frame will likely sink right through it.
| Light Sinkage | 0-2.5โ |
| Moderate Sinkage | 2.6-4โ |
| Deep Sinkage | 4+โ |

Bounce: High
A bouncy mattress isnโt just great to jump on, but it also gives you better ease of movement. Most foam beds like the Tuft & Needle Original donโt offer much bounce, but we ultimately rated it as โmoderate.โ
We measure bounce by dropping a ball from about 6 feet in the air onto the bedโs surface. A yardstick beside the bed measures how far the ball bounces up. The ball bounced 18โณ on the Tuft & Needle Original, which is just on the cusp between moderate and high. Though it wonโt feel like a true innerspring mattress, this bed should feel surprisingly bouncy.
| Low Bounce | 12โ or less |
| Moderate Bounce | 12โ-18โ |
| High Bounce | 18โ or more |
Noise
Throughout testing, the Tuft & Needle Original mattress never made any noise, so we rated it at 5/5. As a foam bed, itโs unlikely to start creaking or squeaking with repeated use.
Sex
The best mattresses for sex will excel in three key performance categories: responsiveness, edge support, and noise. This makes repositioning seamless, lets you make full use of the surface area, and leaves no room for distracting noises from the mattress.
Based on these areas, the Tuft & Needle Original didnโt rocket to the top of our list for this category. While itโs responsive and quiet, itโs not the bounciest mattress out there. Its edge support isnโt anything to write home about either. Most folks should get the job done on this mattress during sex, but it wonโt be a showstopper.
Adjustable Base Compatibility
Many mattresses, including the Tuft & Needle, are advertised as adjustable-base compatible. To ensure this description is true, we test every mattress that comes through our studio on an adjustable base.
Sosha found that the Tuft & Needle Original worked โreally wellโ on the adjustable base. She explained, โWhen you are on it, there is no gap between the mattress and the base. The only issue is how much the fabric bunches up. Iโm deducting a half point because of the excessive amount of material. I think itโd be annoying night after night.โ

Two-Hour Nap Test
One of our lead testers, Marten Carlson, tried out an earlier model of the Tuft & Needle Original. He took a quick nap to determine how the mattress would fare for long-term sleep. In this test, he tries out each sleeping position; as a heavyweight sleeper, he gets a feel for how the bed performs for his body type.
โWhen I slept on my back, my hips sank quite a bit, and I felt some strain on my spine,โ he said. โI felt some pressure on my joints when I slept on my side. I donโt think this mattress is ideal for heavier people like myself. If youโre a smaller person, you should get the pressure relief you need.โ
Unsurprisingly, he didnโt feel much support while resting on his stomach. โI felt my hips sinking out of alignment,โ he said.
Marten also commented on the bedโs cooling ability: โWhen I woke up from my nap, I didnโt feel hot, but I didnโt feel particularly cool either. This may not be the best option for people who tend to overheat.โ
Again, given the similarities between the models, we expect Marten to have a similar experience with the new one. However, as soon as he can take it for a spin, we will update these findings.
Tuft & Needle Original Customer Experience Scores
Now that youโve seen how the Tuft & Needle performed, letโs take a look at what else comes with your new mattress.
Trial Period
Tuft & Needle offers a 100-night sleep trial period. This allows you to sleep on your mattress for 100 nights so you can decide if itโs the right mattress for you. This is fairly standard, if on the lower end, so we rated it at 3.5/5.
If you want to return the Tuft & Needle mattress during your 100-night trial period, you can initiate a return through Tuft & Needle to receive a full refund. Although if you ordered a Tuft & Needle mattress and had it delivered to Alaska or Hawaii, Tuft & Needle does not refund the original shipping fees
Warranty
The Tuft & Needle mattress comes with a 10-year limited warranty. Once again, this is on the lower end of things. Iโd like to see at least a 15-year warranty on a mattress; many brands we recommend even offer a lifetime warranty. This earned another 3.5/5 rating.
The mattress company will repair or replace your bed if it has any manufacturing defects that are covered by the warranty, such as premature indentation and sagging or tears in the fabric cover. Make sure you keep your receipt in case you need to file a claim later.
Unboxing and Moving
Our team had a relatively easy time unboxing and setting up this mattress. โThe box was a bit heavy, but I was able to manage unboxing the bed by myself without the help of another person,โ said our in-house tester. โOnce the bed was out of its box, it was a lot easier to move around, and even more so once it decompressed.โ She gave it a 5/5 for the unboxing process.

Readiness After Unboxing
We also thought the mattress expanded relatively quickly. โWhen I punctured the foam, it took about two minutes to rise to its full shape,โ our tester explained. For best results, Iโd still recommend waiting a few hours before sleeping on your mattress. Most manufacturers suggest at least a full day.

Off-gassing
Our testers commented on a โchemical, factory scentโ upon unboxing the mattress. This is called off-gassing, and itโs expected with a bed-in-a-box, especially one made entirely of foam. It should dissipate the longer you leave the mattress out and shouldnโt cause you any harmโaside from annoying sensitive noses. Based on this, Tuft & Needle earned a 4/5 for off-gassing.
Tuft & Needle Original Construction
Letโs dive deeper into whatโs inside the Tuft & Needle mattress.
Mattress Height & Weight
At 10โณ tall, the Tuft & Needle is a relatively thin mattress, though not the thinnest weโve seen. It should be a good fit for small spaces, like bunk beds. Depending on which size you choose, it can weigh anywhere between 42 lbs and 82 lbs.
Materials
The Tuft & Needle Original is an all-foam mattress, meaning it contains multiple foam layers. Itโs not a hybrid, so it doesnโt have any coils.
Layers

The Tuft & Needle features one comfort layer of responsive foam. Itโs soft and slightly bouncy, so you shouldnโt feel like youโre โsinking insideโ the mattress.
Underneath, thereโs a layer of adaptive foam, which contours the body and offers spine support.
The Tuft & Needle boasts a thick piece of support foam as its base. This dense foam helps lightweight and average-weight people maintain proper spinal alignment while sleeping on their back and side.
How To Try and Buy The Tuft & Needle Original Mattress
There are a number of Tuft & Needle showrooms located throughout the United States. To find the closest one to you, visit Tuft & Needleโs website.
But if you donโt want to deal with pushy salespeople, you can order your mattress online and make use of the brandโs 100-night sleep trial period. So long as you initiate a return within the trial period, you can receive your money back if itโs not the mattress for you. If you fall in love with it, itโs then covered by a 10-year warranty.

Tuft & Needle Original vs. Nectar Classic Mattress
If youโre taking a look at the Tuft & Needle, consider how it compares to another popular all-foam mattress: the Nectar. It has a slightly different feel than the Tuft & Needle; it exhibits that classic slow-moving feel, while the Tuft & Needle has more of a balanced, more supportive foam feel.
Both of these mattresses are medium-firm beds and therefore cater to similar sleeper types, but the Nectar has the edge over Tuft & Needle on cooling. It comes with a built-in cooling cover that pairs well with its breathable foam construction, keeping temperatures low for hot sleepers.
Read the full Tuft & Needle Vs Nectar comparison.

Tuft & Needle Original vs. Bear Original
The Bear Original is another all-foam mattress made for folks on a budget. Like the Tuft & Needle, it provides a supportive, medium-firm feel. Both beds are even 10โณ tall.
The main difference is pricing. The Tuft & Needle typically retails for nearly $900 for a queen before any sales and coupons. In comparison, you can buy the Bear Original for under $700, depending on what deals are running. Another plus is that the Bearโs edge support is far better than the Tuft & Needle, which may appeal to older adults or those with mobility concerns.

Tuft & Needle Original vs. Leesa Original
Weโve expounded on the many virtues of the Tuft & Needle Original, but a major downside is that itโs not built for sleepers over 230lbs. For folks in this category, I recommend the Leesa Original. This firmer foam mattress earned high marks from our heavyweight testers, especially for those who sleep on their back and side.
The Leesa mattress also earned a perfect rating for cooling, outperforming Tuft & Needleโs 3.5/5 rating. It will also be a better mattress for stomach sleepers. The Tuft & Needle earned a higher motion isolation rating, so itโll likely be the favorite for couples.

Tuft & Needle Original Mattress FAQs
Are Tuft and Needle mattresses any good?
Tuft & Needle mattresses are good if youโre after affordable bed-in-a-box mattresses. We donโt think the Original is a good pick for heavyweight sleepers or those who run hot. If that sounds like you, you might like the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid.
What firmness is the original Tuft and Needle mattress?
The Tuft & Needle mattress is a medium-firm mattress. We rated it at a 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, which is true medium-firm. This should provide a nice blend of softness and support, ideal for most side and back sleepers under 230 pounds.
How long will a Tuft and Needle mattress last?
Ideally, a Tuft & Needle mattress should last around 5 to 10 years, the lifespan for a typical mattress. Itโs backed by a 10-year warranty, should you encounter any defects within this timeframe.
