EDITOR’S NOTE: The Simmons Beautyrest Platinum collection is no longer available and has been replaced with the Harmony Lux collection.

Simmons Beautyrest beds — also known as Beautyrest beds — are a household name and have been around for a long time. The recent collections of beds are broken down into three groups: Black, Platinum, and Silver.

Within each collection are different types of mattresses in a range of prices, comfort levels, and materials. This post focuses on the Platinum Collection. These mattresses are hybrids and innerspring (coil) options ranging in price from $1,299 to $2,999 for a Queen.

There are currently 16 different models to choose from, and this article will help consumers make a better decision as to which mattress is most appropriate for them.

Who Makes Beautyrest Mattresses?

Beautyrest is the flagship brand of Simmons Bedding Company, which was founded in 1870 and is based in Atlanta, Ga. Wisconsin entrepreneur Zalmon G. Simmons started the company. In 1925, engineer John Franklin Gail designed a machine that would coil wire and insert it into fabric sleeves — thus creating the “pocketed coil” design unique to Beautyrest mattresses.

What Sets The Beautyrest Platinum Collection Apart From The Black And Silver Collections?

Currently, the mattresses on the Simmons Beautyrest website are sorted into three categories: Silver, Platinum, and Black.

  • Platinum is more expensive than Silver.
  • Black is the most expensive line.
  • Silver is the most affordable category.

Simmons also has more affordable online mattresses. Read our Simmons Foam mattress review to learn more.

What Type Of Beds/Frames Do These Mattresses Work With?

Per the Simmons website, you should use a Beautyrest Platinum mattress with “a new Beautyrest® or Simmons® foundation. An old foundation unit may not provide sufficient support.”

If people plan to use a foundation, they should also use a frame that provides “rigid center support as well as support for the head, foot, and sides.” The warranty specifically states that “for any queen or king frame that does not have a metal center support, you must use at least five hardwood or metal slats (1″ x 4″) and add legs to the three center slats. By not providing a sufficient supportive frame, damage can occur to the product that will void your warranty.”

If you are using the mattress without a foundation, Simmons recommends that you:

“Add a solid platform on top of any open slatted mattress support system in which the spaces between the slats are greater than 2 inches (5 centimeters). Hardboard, plywood, particle board or a similar material, inserted between the mattress and the slatted platform, supporting the entire surface of the mattress will provide appropriate support. Use of an open slatted mattress support system in which the spaces between the slats are greater than 2 inches (5 centimeters), without the addition of a solid platform, will damage your mattress and void your warranty.”

What Materials And Components Are Standard Across The Beautyrest Platinum Collection?

There are two main types of mattresses in the Platinum Collection: hybrid and innerspring. The hybrid models in the Platinum collection all use alternating Pocketed Coil® Technology and Pocketed Memory Foam™ as well as different types of cooling memory foams:

  • Activpur™ Memory Foam
  • Aircool® Gel Memory Foam

The innerspring mattresses include Pocketed Coil® Technology and a combination of different foams, such as:

  • Airfeel™ Foam
  • Geltouch® Foam
  • Beautyrest® Gel Memory Foam

Who Might Choose A Beautyrest Platinum Mattress?

  • People with a decent budget. The Platinum Collection falls right in the middle between the Black and Silver collections in terms of price and features. The hybrid and innerspring mattresses have a lot to offer in terms of comfort and options, and they’re all priced at just under $3,000 or less.
  • People who want an innerspring bed. This collection has 11 innerspring mattress models in a range of firmness and comfort levels and price points. There are plenty of choices here if you have your heart set on a coil mattress.
  • People who want both pressure relief and good support. Beautyrest promises that its six hybrid models offer “the right balance of pressure relief and support,” and that’s because they’re using alternating layers of foams and pocketed coil technology in their mattresses.

Who Might Not Choose A Beautyrest Platinum Mattress?

  • People who are looking for a foam mattress. These models only come in hybrid (which is a mix of coils and foam layers) and innerspring (which is all coils). There are no all-foam options in the Platinum Collection.
  • People looking to save money. If you want the least expensive Beautyrest beds, definitely check out the Silver Collection. They will be the most affordable options.

Common Praise: What Makes These Mattresses Stand Out?

  • Firmer options seem to help with back pain. Several people describe being very happy with their Platinum model after experiencing back pain with their previous mattress picks.
  • Reviews suggest that it holds up well for heavier-weight sleepers. “Between me and my husband, I weigh 335 and he weighs 297. So, I’d say it holds up very well. Both of us are comfortable and we don’t have a problem with the mattress at all,” wrote one reviewer on Beautyrest’s website.
  • The models offer good motion transfer, which is awesome for couples. “I work nights and wanted to be able to go to bed and not be awakened when my husband climbed out of bed,” wrote another customer.

Common Complaints And Other Things To Note

  • The models with pillow-tops may run hot for a number of reasons. “It sleeps like an electric blanket on its highest setting,” said one customer. “It is extremely uncomfortable due to the temperature that a foam maintains.”
  • Some felt that a few models were too soft and they fell right through to firmer layers. “I swear…the floor is more comfortable as it does not push back between my hips and shoulders like this horrific mattress,” wrote one reviewer.

Trial Periods

If you buy your Simmons Beautyrest Platinum mattress from a third-party retailer, that retailer may offer a trial period, but the details depend on the retailer, model, and other variables.

Warranty Details

The mattress will come with a law tag on it, and the warranty code on that tag will denote the specific warranty offered with your product.
