With over 150 years in the mattress industry, the Serta brand must have a reason for its staying power. To find out, weโre reviewing the Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring mattress to decide whether it lives up to its name.
In our unbiased Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress review, weโll examine its firmness, feel, cooling features, and more. We also asked our medical product tester, Dr. Hannah Habeeb (DPT), for her opinion on this mattress from an orthopedic standpoint.
Our team of experts have helped more than 43,000 people find their new favorite mattress. Want to join the ranks? If youโre after a well-rounded firm bed with plenty of pressure relief, the Perfect Sleeper could be the perfect match for you.
Our Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress Review in a Nutshell
We tested the Medium Cascade Range model of the Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring. Though we found it firmer than advertised, our testers praised the bed for its pressure reliefโespecially for those who sleep on their back. The mattress earned high marks for motion isolation, edge support, and responsiveness, marking it as one of the best beds for couples. We wouldโve liked to see better cooling and more generous company policies, but itโs still an appealing jack-of-all-trades bed.
The Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring mattress is a hybrid that boasts, unsurprisingly, a classic innerspring feel. Despite coming across as firmer than expected, our testers enjoyed this bed's mix of gentle pressure relief and robust, spine-aligning support. It earned high marks for motion isolation, edge support, and responsiveness, but faltered in our cooling test.
Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress Performance: My Overall Rating
At Mattress Clarity, we evaluate every performance aspect of a mattress, from how cool it feels to how well it relieves pressure. Each of these categories receives a score out of 5, which is then factored into our overall mattress rating.
The Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring earned an overall rating of 4.4 out of 5. It earned 4s and above in every category, aside from cooling. This marks it as a truly well-rounded mattress.
I Recommend the Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress Forโฆ
- Back sleepers โ This bedโs firmer feel and gentle pressure relief makes the perfect profile for spinal alignment.
- Couples โ Excellent motion isolation, edge support, and responsiveness should benefit sleepers who share the bed.
- Sleepers on a budget โ You can purchase a queen-size Serta Perfect Sleeper for less than $1,000.

I Donโt Recommend the Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress Forโฆ
- Sleepers who run especially hot โ The Perfect Sleeper received mixed ratings in our cooling test, including evidence of high heat retention.
- Shoppers wanting a true memory foam feel โ This bed didnโt offer the same contouring as softer, all-foam mattresses.
- Soft mattress fans โ Even the Medium model of this mattress skewed firm, so if youโre after a super-plush bed, Iโd look elsewhere.

How Firm is the Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress?

Mattress firmness refers to how plush or hard a mattress feels. While it can vary person-to-person, we rate every bedโs firmness on a scale of 1 to 10โ1 being the softest, and 10 the firmestโso you can find out if its feel will suit your preferences.
The Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring mattress is available in multiple firmness levels and heights, and each one has a different name. We tried out the Medium-feel version of the tallest model (14โณ high), the Cascade Range.
My colleague Sosha Lewis found this mattress firmer than advertised, rating it at an 8/10 on our scale. Most medium-firm mattresses, the industry standard, tend to fall around 6.5/10. Despite this firmness, our testers were still able to find comfort and pressure relief resting on this mattress.
How Does the Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress Feel for Different Body Types and Sleeping Positions?
โCertain body types may find mattresses firmer or softer than expected, just as different sleeping positions require certain feels to achieve comfort,โ explains Dr. Raj Dasgupta. This means that no mattress is a one-size-fits-all option.
As for the Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress (specifically the Medium feel of the Cascade Range model), we found it generally accommodates most sleepers. Back and stomach sleepers will likely feel the most comfortable.

โThis mattress felt like a typical innerspring bed to me. It has a very strong support system, which helps keep my spine in a neutral alignment, regardless of my sleeping position.โ โ Riley Otis, expert mattress tester

Pressure Relief
Pressure relief is essential for comfort and preventing pain while resting on your mattress. You may notice that when lying down on your back or side, certain parts of the body dig further into the mattress. A pressure-relieving mattress ensures these pressure points (like the shoulders, hips, or lower back) donโt encounter resistance.
To test pressure relief, we have testers of varying weights and preferences try side and back sleeping on the mattress. They give their opinion of how comfortable they feel, including a rating out of 5 representing whether the bed relieves pressure for their body type.
At the same time, a specialized mat beneath them records the pressure building. Using thermal imaging, it creates a color-coded map of the testerโs body, showing areas of high and low pressure. Red and yellow means high pressure, which we donโt want to see. Blues and greens mean very little pressure.
The mat also records the overall pressure distributed across the bedโs surface. This is measured in pounds per square inch, or PSI. We compare this rating against our averages: 14.58 PSI for side sleepers and 12.43 PSI for back sleepers. A lower number means better pressure relief and less resistance.
Our lightweight tester for the Serta Perfect Sleeper was my colleague Riley Otis. Riley rated side-sleeping on this mattress at a 4/5. Her overall pressure was at 10.79 PSI, a little high for her body type but still lower than the average.
โThe cushioning from the pillow top did a nice job cushioning my hips and shoulders when side sleeping, and I didnโt feel any pressure building in those areas,โ she explained. She commented that she wished there was โa bit more body contouringโ from the mattress, but noted it was a personal preference.

Riley was much more comfortable on her back. She gave this position a 4.5/5. Her overall pressure was also much lower at 8.53 PSI. โI felt really great on my back and loved how the pillow top filled in my lumbar spine and provided a bit of lift in that area,โ she said.
Our average-weight tester had about the same experience as Riley, giving the mattress the same 4/5 and 4.5/5 ratings for side and back sleeping. Her overall pressure for side sleeping was 10.81 PSI, quite low for her body type. Back sleeping came in at 8.6 PSI. Her pressure maps were also completely blue, save for one spot of yellow on her shoulder for side sleeping.

Sosha Lewis, also an average-weight tester, praised that โthe alignment was fantastic on this mattress.โ She waffled back and forth on whether the bed was too firm for side sleeping, but back sleeping was an easy yes. โI think that people who want a firm bed with a pillow top would really like this,โ she said.
In the absence of a heavyweight tester, we called upon physical therapist Dr. Hannah Habeeb to give her thoughts on this mattress. โI think a heavier sleeper would do fine on this mattress,โ she said. โThey will get the benefits of the pillow top and cushiony parts, but I donโt think theyโd sink in too far to where theyโre feeling misalignment or discomfort.โ
Dr. Habeeb also commented on the bedโs ability to maintain proper alignment, which benefits sleepers with back pain and other spinal conditions. โItโs really supportive in all three positions and keeps your spine very neutral overall,โ she explained. โI also love it for scoliosisโit contours the boney parts of the body while still keeping you very well aligned.โ
Edge Support
A mattress with strong edges ensures that you can sit and rest along the perimeter of the mattress without it buckling or collapsing. Itโs beneficial for spreading out and could help folks with mobility concerns make a clean transfer out of bed.
We test edge support in two ways. First up is our subjective seated and lying-down support test.
For this test, my colleague Sosha Lewis first sat on the edge of the Serta Perfect Sleeper to judge how secure she felt. โIt has very good edge support, but I noticed that it angles down when you are sitting on it. It doesnโt collapse, just tilts you a little oddly,โ she said. Getting in and out of bed should still be relatively seamless.
Sosha also found โfantastic edge support when you rest on your back and side.โ She had no concerns about falling off the mattress when she lay near the perimeter, so she gave this test a 5/5.

Next up is our weighted edge support test. In this test, we stack weight plates along the edge of the mattress to mimic sleepers sitting on the edge. Different stacks represent each weight category: lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight. We then use a tape measure to record how far the bed dips.
For our lightweight tester, the bed only dipped 2โณ, which earns a 5/5 rating. This increased to 3.25 for average-weight sleepers and 4.5 for heavyweight sleepers, both of which score 4/5.
Combining all these scores together results in a 4.6/5 total edge support rating. The Serta Perfect Sleeperโs robust edges should provide extra security throughout the night.
Cooling
If you wake up in a sweat (and itโs not from nightmares), it might be time for a cooling mattress. These beds often feature enhanced cooling technology like fancy covers or gel memory foam to wick away excess moisture. The Serta Perfect Sleeper does contain cooling fabric in its breathable cover, plus pocketed coils for better airflow, but is it just for show?
In our cooling test, we use a thermal gun to measure the surface temperature of the mattress. We take two readings: one before anyone has gotten on the bed, and a second after our tester has rested on it for about seven minutes. The increase in temperature shows us how much heat the bed holds onto.
For the Serta Perfect Sleeper, my colleague Sosha recorded an initial temperature of 68.1 degrees, and then found it increased to 79.5 degrees. This 10.4-degree increase is quite high, resulting in a 3/5 score, per our chart below.

But Sosha pushed back against these results, saying she was โshockedโ to see such a high reading. โIt didnโt reflect my experience at all,โ she said. โWhen I first got on it, it was cool to the touch. It definitely went to a more neutral feel, but I was never very warm.โ
With these mixed results, Iโd hesitate to recommend it to hot sleepers. But based on Soshaโs account, I believe most folks wonโt overheat on this mattress.
| Less than a 4-degree change | 5/5 |
| 4-6 degree change | 4.5/5 |
| 6-8 degree change | 4/5 |
| 8-10 degree change | 3.5/5 |
| 10-12 degree change | 3/5 |

Motion Isolation
Ever felt your partnerโs tossing and turning throughout the night? You likely have a bed with poor motion isolation. Motion isolation or motion transfer refers to how well (or poorly) a bed absorbs movement before it can travel across the surface of the mattress. Good motion isolation is paramount for a mattress for couples.
We test this category in two ways. One is our water glass test. We place a glass of water on one side of the bed, then move around on the other. First, we get in and out of bed, then we move around on the other side. How the water behaves (whether it ripples, splashes, or remains still) shows how much movement is felt on the other side. Less disturbance means better motion isolation.
Sosha performed both of these tests for the Serta Perfect Sleeper. She said, โI figured that this bed was going to be pretty good at motion isolation, but I was surprised with how little the water rolled.โ The most difficulty she encountered was finding a steady place to put the cup, thanks to the bedโs tufted surface.
โGetting in and out of bed only produced a gentle bump, not even a wave,โ she explained. When she switched to rolling around, she had similar results. โIt got a little rowdier when I aggressively changed positions close to it, but I was more worried about knocking the glass over than any splashing.โ She rated each test at 5/5 and 4.5/5 respectively.

Next up is our partner test. Another tester tried out the mattress alongside Sosha. He moved around on one side of the bed, while Sosha rested blindfolded on the other.
โI could feel slight movement when my partner got in and out of bed but it was pretty muted,โ Sosha said. โI am a very light sleeper, and I donโt think this would bother me at all. It was a little more noticeable when he was turning over, but he was being overly aggressive in his movements. Hopefully, most couples donโt treat each other that way.โ
Based on her findings, Sosha rated the partner test at 4.5/5. This led to an overall motion isolation score of 4.7/5, marking the Perfect Sleeper as a great mattress for couples.
Response
A responsive mattress snaps back into place when you press down on it, making for easier movement. If youโve ever felt โstuckโ in your mattress while moving around, it likely has poor responsiveness. We recommend responsive mattresses for combination sleepers and sexually active folks, since they make repositioning during either much more seamless.
When Sosha moved around on this mattress, she noted it was โvery easy to switch positionsโ on the Serta Perfect Sleeper. She explained, โThe top is soft and cushioned, but the bed is firm enough that you donโt get stuck. Itโs easy to roll over.โ
This was echoed by Dr. Hannah Habeeb, who noted she didnโt encounter the quicksand feeling when she tried out the mattress. However, she cautioned that the thick pillow top could โinhibit some movement if you need assistance from another person to get out of bed (ie; a caretaker is transferring you).โ
The Perfect Sleeper earned an overall responsiveness score of 4.5/5, so I doubt that most sleepers will encounter any difficulty moving around on this bed.
Sinkage: Light
Sinkage might sound like a negative on paper, but itโs really a matter of personal preference. Folks who like to feel cradled and hugged by their mattress will love deep sinkage, while those who want to remain โon topโ of their bed like minimal sinkage.

To test sinkage, we place a kettlebell on the surface of the mattress and use a ruler to measure how much it dips. For the Serta Perfect Sleeper, we recorded 2.5โณ of sinkage. Itโs on the tail end of โlightโ sinkage, so you still might get a gentle cradle from this mattress. This makes sense, as some of our testers commented they would prefer more contouring from this bed.
| Light Sinkage | 0-2.5โ |
| Moderate Sinkage | 2.6-4โ |
| Deep Sinkage | 4+โ |
Bounce: High
A bouncy mattress isnโt just great to jump on (though we donโt recommend it). It makes moving around easier, which can benefit combination sleepers and sexually active couples.
We measure bounce height by dropping a ball from six feet above the bed. A yardstick measures how high the ball reaches when it bounces. For the Serta Perfect Sleeper, it was a whopping 26โณ of bounceโmarking it as a particularly springy mattress.
| Low Bounce | 12โ or less |
| Moderate Bounce | 12โ-18โ |
| High Bounce | 18โ or more |
Noise
Per Sosha, there was โnot a peepโ from the Serta Perfect Sleeper throughout testing, earning a 5/5 rating. Even though thereโs a chance that innerspring beds could get creakier as time goes on, weโre fairly certain the bedโs durability should combat this.
Sex
The Perfect Sleeper earned 4.5 and above for responsiveness, edge support, and noiseโall areas that should make it one of the best mattresses for sex. Youโll be able to reposition easily on this bed, spread out thanks to the strong perimeter, and there shouldnโt be any distracting squeaking from the coil unit. Averaging these scores together, it earned an impressive 4.7/5 for sex.
Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress Customer Experience Scores
Now that weโve gone over how the Serta Perfect Sleeper performs, letโs go over customer service policies.

Trial Period
A sleep trial allows you to try out a mattress before committing to a purchase. You can usually return the mattress for a full refund, so long as itโs within the sleep trial period. Most brandsโ trials last a few months to up to a year.
The Serta Perfect Sleeper comes with a 100-night trial. This is fairly standard, but not the most generous weโve seen. Therefore, we gave it a 3.5/5.
Warranty
A mattress warranty covers any defects or flaws you may find after purchasing a mattress. A long warranty not only gives you peace of mind, but it shows confidence in the productโs longevity.
Most mattresses should last about 5 to 10 years, so warranties of this length are common; a Serta Perfect Sleeper comes with a 10-year limited warranty. However, weโve seen lengthier warranties from other brands, including lifetime warranties. Therefore, we rated the warranty at 3.5/5.
Note that your new Serta mattress will need a box spring or compatible foundation, otherwise this will void the warranty.
Delivery
If you purchase a Perfect Sleeper mattress directly from Sertaโs website, it comes with free white glove delivery and haul-away. This means a team will come to set up your new mattress and even take away your old one.
We took advantage of this service when testing, and everything went smoothly. This also means no waiting for the mattress to expand or off-gassing (no chemical smell).

Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress vs. Saatva Classic
If you love the classic innerspring feel, Iโd be remiss if I didnโt mention Saatvaโs flagship model. This mattress features two coils units, plus a dense pillow top, to create a luxurious sleep surface. Like the Serta Perfect Sleeper, itโs also a bit on the firmer sideโbut as a side sleeper myself, I love the contouring I get from the Saatva Classic.
The Perfect Sleeper does offer better motion isolation than the Saatva, making it the preferred choice for couples. However, the Saatva does feel a bit cooler, which might make it the better pick for hot sleepers. Finally, as a luxury mattress, the Saatva Classic also costs more than the Serta Perfect Sleeperโthough both beds come with free white glove delivery.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress vs. Helix Midnight Luxe
Cooling is the one area where the Serta Perfect Sleeper lagged behind. If youโre a hot sleeper, you may want to choose a bed that scored higher in this area. The Helix Midnight Luxe comes with a cooling pillow top that creates a cool-to-the-touch feel right at the surface.
This mattress is also a bit softer than the Perfect Sleeper, coming in at around medium firmness on our scale. Itโs a favored choice for side sleepers. Stomach sleepers will likely prefer the Perfect Sleeperโs firmer support. Also keep in mind that the Helix Midnight Luxe is a bit more expensive than the Serta Perfect Sleeper.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress vs. Nectar Classic Hybrid
If youโre a fan of softer hybrid mattresses, let me direct your attention to the Nectar Classic Hybrid. When I tested out this mattress, I was surprised to find it had a plush, memory foam feel. I rated it at a 5.5/10 on our firmness scaleโcompare that to the Perfect Sleeperโs 8/10 rating.
Side sleepers with sensitive joints should love the Nectar, whereas stomach sleepers who need extra support will prefer the Serta. The Perfect Sleeper did fare better in our edge support evaluation, but the Classic Hybridโs cooling cover managed to keep temperatures lower. Older adults will like the Serta, but hot sleepers should stick to the Nectar. Both beds are also fairly affordable.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress FAQs
How long do Serta Perfect Sleeper mattresses last?
Serta Perfect Sleeper mattresses contain high-quality materials, so they should have a long lifespan. We expect them to last at least 10 years.
What are the cons of the Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress?
Our main con for the Serta Perfect Sleeper was that it was a bit firmer than expected. We tried the medium model of the Cascade Range and rated it at 8/10 on our firmness scale. It also didnโt score as well as weโd like in our cooling test. Though our tester found it felt comfortably temperature-neutral, our thermal gun test showed a high increase in surface temperature after her quick nap.
Is Serta Perfect Sleeper good for back pain?
Yes, the Serta Perfect Sleeper is a great bed for back pain. Just take it from physical therapist Dr. Hannah Habeeb: โThe Perfect Sleeper supports all three positions, keeping your spine very neutral. Itโs unlikely youโll sink in too far to compromise alignment.โ
