Saatva is known for its luxury mattresses, including the Saatva Classic, the Solaire, and the Saatva HD. The brand’s Rx model is no exception. But in an interesting twist, the Saatva Rx Mattress is specifically designed for people with chronic back and joint conditions. To see how that translates in the real world, we put the Rx through a series of tests to assess its materials, construction, and performance.

Over the past seven years, the Mattress Clarity team has tested more than 500 mattresses and helped some 40,000 people find a great bed. We use that experience to evaluate the Saatva Rx from top to bottom. We also consulted with Dr. Raj Dasgupta, our chief medical officer, for the most informed and well-rounded take possible. Also, our chief medical product tester, Dr. Hannah Habeeb, visited our Charlotte, NC, studio to test this mattress and give us feedback through a medical lens.

The Saatva Rx earned a high overall score with 4.4 out of 5, and its medium feel was a great fit for back and side sleeping. Keep reading to see who else might enjoy sweet dreams on this upgraded hybrid.

Our Saatva Rx Review in a Nutshell

The Saatva Rx is a luxury hybrid with a medium feel. It has upgraded memory foam and coil layers designed for extra support, spinal alignment, and pressure relief, so it’s geared toward people with chronic back pain and joint pain. Our testers found the Rx delivered a weightless sensation with support in all the right places, and it was most comfortable for side and back sleeping positions. Dr. Habeeb found that those with pain in their neck, back, and hip are likely to find the Rx does a good job of offering the support and contouring they need to be comfortable.

Watch Me Test the Saatva Rx Mattress

I Recommend the Saatva Rx For…

  • Those with back and joint pain can benefit from the enhanced support in this bed’s layers, which evenly distribute body weight to help combat pressure and ensure alignment.
  • Back sleepers who prefer a softer bed will find the upgraded layers in the Rx do an excellent job of promoting a neutral spine.
  • Side sleepers should appreciate the softer top layers, which contour well around the hips and shoulders, helping prevent pressure from building.

I Don’t Recommend the Saatva Rx For…

  • Stomach sleepers may find this hybrid too soft, allowing them to sink into the deeper layers and feel pressure on their chests and stomachs.
  • Fans of a firmer mattress should look elsewhere, since the Rx is designed to be softer and more contouring.
  • Shoppers on a budget are likely to find the price tag for this luxury hybrid prohibitive.

How Firm is the Saatva Rx Mattress?

6/10 mattress firmness on a scale

We rate mattress firmness, which describes how a bed feels when you lie down, on a scale of 1 to 10. A lower score indicates more softness, while a higher score means a firmer feel. The industry average is 6.5/10, or medium-firm.

After considering the Saatva Rx across all three sleeping positions, we gave it an average firmness rating of 6/10, which is slightly softer than average. Our in-house tester rated the Rx 5/10 on both her side and back. “The egg-like quilted top feels amazing, and my side has zero pressure points,” she said. On her back, our tester reported almost falling asleep as she lay there: “The mattress hugs you in all the right places, and my back feels weightless.”

Our tester found the Saatva Rx noticeably firmer when she tested it on her stomach. “My chest felt a lot of pressure, and the pillowtop was pressing into me,” she reported. “I need more sinkage in that area to feel more aligned.” She rated the mattress 7/10 for firmness in this position.

How Does the Saatva Rx Feel for Different Body Types and Sleeping Positions?

With a firmness rating of 6/10, the Saatva Rx is a good fit for back and side sleepers. But we anticipate that most stomach sleepers will feel pushback from deeper layers, which can create pressure in the chest and stomach.

Saatva Rx In-Depth Test Results

Pressure Relief

Pressure Relief – 4.5

Pressure relief describes how evenly a mattress distributes body weight, reducing pressure on sensitive parts of the body, such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back. According to Dr. Dasgupta, pressure relief is a key component of mattress comfort and quality.

The Saatva Rx is promoted as a sleep surface for people who have chronic pain, so we had high expectations for its ability to relieve pressure. We weren’t disappointed. We used an average-weight and a heavyweight tester to evaluate the Rx. Both testers spent time resting on the bed in the back and side sleeping positions. Overall, the Rx scored an average rating of 4.5/5.

Our average-weight sleeper, Sosha Lewis, gave the Rx a perfect score when she tested it on her back. “It’s really cushiony, and my spine feels aligned,” she said. “My shoulder and hips feel like they’re at the same height.” She added that she’s not normally a back sleeper, but this position was truly amazing.

On her side, Sosha was almost as comfortable, but she noted a slight dip in her hip that caused a small pinch in the lower back. “If it had a little more support around the hip, it would be perfect,” she said, giving the bed 4/5 here.

Caine Wilkes, our heavyweight tester, had a similar experience and gave the Rx the same scores as Sosha. The mattress couldn’t have performed better when he tested it on his back. “I don’t feel any pressure in a specific spot,” he said. On his side, Caine noted that he was surprised by how much support he felt, given how cushioned the Rx is. He felt a touch of pressure in his shoulder, which he says is common for him.

However, showcasing that the feel of a mattress is subjective, Dr. Habeeb, who is also an average-weight sleeper, preferred the Rx on her side. She said, “It’s super comfortable when side sleeping. the shoulders and hips feel great with no pressure forming, and there’s some really nice sinkage that also relieves pressure.” Side sleeping received a solid 5/5 from our chief medical product tester.

Edge Support

Edge Support – 3.4

Edge support describes how stable a mattress feels around the perimeter. It’s an important category for couples who need room to spread out. Adults with mobility issues also benefit from a bed with sturdy edges. Hybrid mattresses tend to perform better than all-foam beds, but the Saatva Rx ended up with its worst score in this category: 3.4 out of 5.

We assess edge support with both seated and lying down tests. In the seated test, our in-house tester sat on the side of the bed with her feet on the floor. She noted that the edge of the Rx collapsed pretty significantly. “I felt like I was going to slide off the mattress,” she added, and gave the bed 2/5 for this test.

The Rx did markedly better when our tester lay along the edge of the bed. “I didn’t feel any pressure to the edge or that I would tilt or fall off,” she said. “It felt just as comfortable as the middle of the mattress.” In this test, the Rx earned 5/5.

The third test we performed involved using stacks of weighted plates, each representing different weight classes, and measuring the depth of sinkage on the side of the mattress. From lightest to heaviest, the bed sank 3, 5 and 7 inches, earning scores of 5, 3, and 2.

Cooling

Cooling – 4

While memory foam has a reputation for trapping heat, hybrid mattresses typically do a good job of promoting airflow, which helps prevent overheating. The Rx has both memory foam and coils, along with an organic cotton cover for breathability. It earned a respectable 4 out of 5 for its cooling performance in our tests.

Our in-house tester used a thermal gun to measure the bed’s surface temperature. Then she laid on it for seven minutes and took a follow-up reading. The Saatva’s temperature increased from 69 degrees to 76 degrees, a 7-degree change. That’s not a major change, and it wasn’t reflected in the tester’s personal experience.

“I didn’t feel this mattress heating up while lying there,” she said. “Usually ,I can notice a temperature change, but this one remained consistent. I think it does a good job of keeping it feeling cool with the breathable quilted top.”

Motion Isolation

Motion Isolation – 4.7

Motion isolation is another category that matters more to some sleepers than others. Anyone who shares a bed with a partner or pet benefits from a bed that limits motion transfer, because it keeps movement from traveling across the bed. We performed three tests to evaluate motion isolation in the Saatva Rx, and it performed exceptionally well, earning 4.7/5.

Our first two tests involved a glass of water, which we placed on one side of the mattress. Then our tester climbed in and out of the bed and switched positions on the other side, observing the movement in the glass. Getting the glass to stand upright was a challenge in and of itself because the Rx has a plush top with quilted memory foam.

“I noticed the glass did not rock for the first test, but it did slightly for the second test,” reported our tester. “The water did have movement but didn’t splash or slosh in a more aggressive way.” She gave the Rx a 5 and a 4, respectively, for these tests.

Next, we replaced the water with another tester — and this is where the Saatva Rx really impressed us. “This is the best motion isolation I have experienced for a mattress,” raved our tester. “Even when my teammate switched positions, it felt more like the seated test for other mattresses in terms of intensity of the motion.” That earned the Rx full marks.

Response

Responsiveness – 4

A responsive mattress makes it really easy to move around, because materials snap back to their original shape following the release of pressure. Combination sleepers in particular benefit from a quick response time. Contouring materials, like the high-density memory foam found at the top of this mattress, aren’t known for their responsiveness, but the Saatva Rx surprised us. It earned 4/5 in this category.

During the switch test, our in-house tester moved between sleeping positions to assess whether the materials impeded movement. “This mattress is very thick and plush but also firm at the same time,” she noted. It has a textured top, which makes it a little more difficult to switch positions, but not by much. She gave the Rx 4 stars.

In the second test, we used a 44-pound kettlebell and a stopwatch to time how long it took for the bed to return to its original shape after lifting the weight. The Saata Rx took 0.6 seconds, earning a score of 4 out of 5. It’s reflective of the deeper support layers beneath the plush top layers.

Sinkage: Deep

To test sinkage, we put the kettlebell back on the bed and measure how far it sinks. We recorded 4.25 inches of overall sinkage, which qualifies as deep sinkage. That’s logical given the contouring materials and softer feel, earning the Rx our top score.

Sinkage test for the Saatva Rx Mattress

Bounce: High

In the bounce test, we drop a weighted ball on the bed and measure the height of its bounce. The Saatva Rx had an impressive 23.5-inch bounce, indicating significant springiness. Again, that’s because of the deeper support layers in this mattress, which offset the cushioning in the top.

Noise

Noise – 5

Assessing noise on a mattress is simple — our tester moves around on the bed and listens for creaks or the hissing sound that indicates air escaping foam. Our tester reported no sound at all on the Rx, earning a perfect score.

Sex

Sex – 4.1

To decide whether a mattress might be conducive to sex, we average response, edge support, and noise scores. The best mattresses for sex make it easy for couples to move around, offer plenty of support across the entire bed, and don’t make any distracting noises. The Saatva Rx earned 4.1 out of 5, making it a good option for sexual partners.

Adjustable Base Compatibility

Adjustable Base Compatibility – 1

While Saatva promotes its own adjustable base as an add-on to the Saatva Rx, we didn’t find the bed particularly compatible when we tested it on the adjustable base in our studio. “It’s way too thick and has too much material inside,” our in-house tester noted. That affected its ability to flex with the base. Over time, that issue is likely to become more pronounced. We gave the Rx a 1 out of 5 in this category.

Saatva Rx Customer Experience Scores

Since there’s more to a mattress than sleeping on it, we share details about delivery, trial windows, and warranties.

Trial Period

Trial Period – 5

Saatva offers one of the best sleep trials in the industry. You get a full 365 nights to test out the Rx, so you can assess it during all four seasons. Unlike other brands, Saatva doesn’t have a minimum trial window. This is usually 30 days, because it takes time for the body to adjust to a new surface. If you decide two weeks into the experience that the Rx isn’t a good fit, you can initiate a return for a full refund. Just be aware that a $99 processing fee applies. Considering that it is one of the best trial periods we’ve found, the Rx earned a perfect 5/5 in this category.

Warranty

Warranty – 5

The Saatva Rx has a lifetime warranty, but it’s worth reading the fine print. If a defect occurs during the first two years, Saatva will replace your mattress at no charge. Beginning in year three, Saatva will repair and re-cover your mattress if it’s deemed defective, but you’ll need to pay a $149 processing fee.

The brand also has a replacement option. Instead of a repair during years three through five, you can get a new Saatva mattress for 50% of the original full retail price at the time of your purchase. That cost goes up the longer you have your mattress. Even with the caveats, we give this warranty a 5/5.

Unboxing and Moving

Unboxing and Moving – 5

All Saatva mattresses come with complimentary white glove shipping, so this is an easy 5 stars. They’re delivered flat and set up in the room of your choice, so there are no unboxing, rising, or off-gassing considerations. Plus, the removal of your old mattress is included.

Unboxing the Saatva Rx

Saatva Rx Construction

We’ve mentioned a few times that the Saatva Rx has upgraded layers for enhanced support. Let’s take a closer look at the materials doing the heavy lifting here.

Mattress Height & Weight

Measuring some stacked weight plates on the edge of a Saatva Rx Mattress

The Saatva Rx is a 15-inch mattress, which puts it on the taller side compared to the average, which is usually around 12 inches.

A queen weighs 124 pounds. That’s quite heavy, but the Rx comes with white-glove delivery, including setup.

Materials

The Saatva Rx is a luxury hybrid with multiple layers of foam and two separate coil layers. It also has a soft, breathable quilted cover made with an organic cotton blend. It’s finished with an antimicrobial treatment to keep it fresh.

Layers

Construction of the Saatva Rx Mattress

We always cut into mattresses for a first-person look at the layers. While there isn’t usually much in the way of surprises, our in-house tester said the Rx had one of the most unique constructions she’d ever seen.

At the top, she saw a layer of gel-infused memory foam above a one-inch micro-coil layer. In what the brand calls the therapeutic support core, a second memory foam layer is nested over is a thicker layer of coils, which our tester said are larger than those she usually sees. According to Saatva, the foam layer here is zoned and infused with graphite and phase-change material for cooler sleep. Our tester also noted a very thick, dense base to the mattress.

The plush top of the Saatva Rx is memory foam with heavy quilting, which feels dense but soft. The fabric has a smooth and synthetic yet breathable feel.

Between the quilted cover and the first memory foam layer is what Saatva calls a lumbar crown. It’s situated in the center third of the bed for extra support in the lumbar zone. It wasn’t visible in the section we cut.

How To Try and Buy The Saatva Rx Mattress

While Saatva mattresses can be purchased online, the brand is unique in that it has brick-and-mortar showrooms across the U.S. It gives you the opportunity to test out a mattress before enjoying the 365-night home trial.

Saatva Rx vs. Helix Midnight Luxe

The Helix Midnight Luxe is another luxury hybrid that works well for back and side sleepers. It scored higher in edge support than the Saatva Rx, and performed better in our cooling tests as well. The Saatva Rx outperformed the Helix in pressure relief and motion isolation, so it’s a slightly better choice for those with joint pain or couples who are easily disturbed.

Saatva Rx vs. DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid

The DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid wowed our testers, earning perfect scores in three categories: pressure relief, motion isolation, and response. That makes it a great choice for those with sensitive joints, folks who share the bed, and combination sleepers. However, it came up short in edge support and performed quite badly in cooling, with just 2.5 out of 5. Hot sleepers will be much more comfortable on the Rx.

From a price point perspective, the DreamCloud is the better buy. A queen-size is $1,500, which is a huge savings over the Rx, even when it’s on sale.

Our tester back sleeping on a DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid

Saatva Rx vs. Nolah Evolution

With its luxurious Euro topper, zoned support, and three firmness levels, the Nolah Evolution also qualifies as a luxury hybrid. Our test tested the luxury-firm model, which accommodates back and side sleeping nicely. It slightly outperformed the Saatva Rx with an overall score of 4.6. Both beds offer comparable pressure relief, but the Evolution has much better edge support. It also earned a perfect score for its motion isolation, so we’re more inclined to recommend this bed for couples.

Once again, the Saatva Rx is the more expensive mattress. But the Nolah Evolution isn’t cheap. A queen-size size before discounts is $2,277, though regular sales bring that price down considerably. While the Evolution has a lifetime warranty, its sleep trial is much shorter at 120 nights.

Saatva Rx Mattress FAQs

What is the lifespan of a Saatva Rx mattress?

Based on its construction and materials, a Saatva Rx mattress should perform well for 8 to 10 years. Durable high-density foam and dual coil layers should resist sagging and ensure consistent support over time, but keep in mind that individual factors like body weight, sleep position, and how often you rotate the bed all affect mattress lifespan.

Can you flip a Saatva Rx mattress?

No, the Saatva Rx isn’t a flippable mattress. The hybrid has a distinct top and bottom, and turning it over will compromise performance and comfort. Instead, the Saatva Rx should be regularly rotated once or twice a year to promote even wear.

Is the Saatva Rx a good mattress?

The Saatva Rx is a good mattress for people who need targeted pressure relief and upgraded lumbar support. It has a softer feel, but it lacks the slow-moving feel of memory foam.
