The Helix Dusk Luxe earned high marks across the board, with an overall score of 4.7/5 stars. But it earned our nod for best innerspring mattress overall because it really delivered on the classic innerspring experience and scored very high in responsiveness, edge support, and pressure relief.

Helix mattresses are designed to accommodate the needs of specific sleep styles. The Helix Dusk Luxe is geared toward stomach and back sleepers with what the brand calls a medium firmness, but our mattress tester found it a little firmer than average. She rated it a 7/10 in all positions and preferred it on her stomach than on her back, though back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel may find it quite comfortable. “My spine felt aligned with no pressure in my lower back,” she reported. During the switch test to assess responsiveness, our tester gave the Dusk Luxe a full 5/5 stars, describing it as pleasingly bouncy and easy to move on. Combination sleepers or anyone who prefers a quick response time should have no issues.

The Helix Dusk Luxe performed almost as well when we tested its edge support, earning 4.8/5 stars. “The bed has a really nice spring-like effect to it that assisted me out of the bed,” she said. “I felt like when I sat down the edge support was really good.” It was a similar story when she lay on her back, side, and stomach on the side of the mattress: “I could lie almost halfway off with zero issues of feeling like I may fall out.” Those with mobility issues or couples who want to maximize their sleep space will be comfortably supported on the Dusk Luxe.

The mattress ended up with 4/5 stars for its pressure relief, an average score based on feedback from three testers of different weight ranges. The lowest score, a 3/5, came from our heavyweight tester, Caine Wilkes, when he tested it on his back. While he described it as “not terrible,” he said he wouldn’t recommend it for dedicated back sleepers in this weight class and preferred the pressure relief he experienced on this side. In that position, he rated it 4/5. 

Riley Otis, our lightweight tester, found the bed veered a touch too firm for her, while the zoned support meant hip elevation was a little excessive. Still, she gave the bed 4/5 stars in both positions. The highest praise came from Sosha Lewis, a medium-weight tester: “I love this on my back! It’s the perfect combo of plush and contouring, with excellent support. It fills in the gap on my lower back nicely and my shoulders feel fantastic. I don’t feel my body dipping anywhere or more than another area.”

For all its strengths, the firmer feel means the Helix Dusk Luxe probably isn’t the best choice for dedicated side sleepers. The 100-night sleep trial is also worth keeping in mind. While it gives you a little over three months to test at home, other brands offer much longer trials that see you through different seasons for a more well-rounded evaluation. The Dusk Luxe is also on the higher end of the price spectrum, with a queen-size mattress retailing for close to $2,400 before sales pricing.

Nectar puts the firmness of all its mattresses at 6.5/10, but we found the Nectar Classic Hybrid was a bit softer. Mattress tester Livvi DiCicco rated it 5.5 to 6/10 depending on the position. She found it best suited to back sleeping. “Sleeping on my back is actually really comfortable, which I’m surprised about after thinking it was a bit too soft on my side,” she said. “The foams on top really conform to my body, filling in the gap near my lower back, and relieving pressure where my shoulders and lower half really start to sink into the bed. I think the coils are doing their work better in this position than on my side.”

Our lightweight tester also found the Classic Hybrid a good fit on her back, with plenty of support in the lower back and bottom to nix any pressure. Matt Schickling, our heavyweight tester, likewise experienced ample pressure relief, describing it as “well-aligning and supportive.” Overall, the mattress earned 4/5 stars for its pressure relief.

We gave the Classic Hybrid another 4/5 stars for its responsiveness. “The cushy foam top layers make it just a smidge difficult to move around on the surface of this bed,” observed Livvi. “I noticed it most when switching from my side to my back or stomach, as my elbows sort of sunk into the bed when rolling over.” But she added that the coils underneath offered just enough bounce to suit most combination sleepers.

Edge support is where we were a little underwhelmed. The Nectar Classic Hybrid earned 3.8/5 stars here, with Livvi pointing out that the pressure-relieving foam layers really hindered edge support when she sat on the side. “Folks with mobility concerns may prefer a hybrid with thinner (or firmer) comfort layers so the supportive coils aren’t swallowed up by the foam,” she noted. On the other hand, people who sleep in the center of the bed aren’t likely to run into issues.

The bed comes in four firmness options to accommodate different needs and preferences, and it’s surprisingly well priced given its high-quality construction and materials. You can snag a queen on sale for just under $1,500.

We tested the most popular model, the luxury-firm, and tester Melanie Kassel found it true to form, rating it 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. “The WinkBed has a very interesting feel — the pillow top is lovely and plush, but you can feel an extremely sturdy and dense base underneath it,” she said. While that proved to be a touch too firm for side sleeping, she thought it was a great fit for back sleepers: “On my back, I wasn’t sinking as much, so I got the full plushness of the pillow top from head to toe, plus a reassuring sense of stability from the base of the bed.” Stomach sleepers may also be pleased. “In this position, the soft Euro top and high-density base combo works well,” Melanie observed. “There was enough plushness up top to keep my chest comfortable, but the sturdy steel coils kept my hips from dipping too low.”

We were equally impressed by the Winkbed’s strong edge support, especially while lying down. “If my eyes had been closed, I would not have been able to tell you I was near the edge,” Melanie said. “Even when side sleeping (usually my most precarious position on the edge), I was fully elevated and it felt like lying on any other part of the bed.” The WinkBed earned 4.4 stars in this category.

As for pressure relief, our heavy and lightweight sleepers scored the bed full marks in the back sleeping position, and our average-weight sleeper wasn’t far behind with 4/5 stars. “It offers really great support and spinal alignment without being too firm or too soft,” reported our mattress tester.

The WinkBed wasn’t as bouncy as we’d expected, particularly given its construction. “There’s something about the denseness/heaviness of the base that muffles the recoil from the individually wrapped coils,” Melanie said. “The plush pillow top also doesn’t assist with movement. It doesn’t trap me or leave me sunken into the surface, but it’s a lot less responsive than I expected.” The firmer model will likely deliver on more bounce, and it should also be a good match for most back sleepers. Just be mindful that the firmer feel will probably mean less pressure relief.

According to Dr. Raj Dasgupta, zoned support is worth prioritizing in a mattress for back pain, and that’s exactly what you’ll find in the Saatva Classic. Overall, we gave this luxury innerspring 4.6/5 stars, and it earned perfect or nearly perfect marks for pressure relief, responsiveness, and edge support.

The Classic comes in a choice of heights (11.5 inches and 14 inches) and firmness options (Plush Soft, Luxury-Firm, Firm). Dr. Raj Dasgutpa says back pain sufferers need a mattress that keeps their spine aligned while offering enough cushioning to prevent stiffness. “Medium-firm is usually the sweet spot—it’s firm enough to keep your lower back from sinking but soft enough to relieve pressure,” he adds. 

We tested the brand’s firmest model, and Livvi rated it 7.5/10 on the firmness scale. She found it worked really well for stomach sleeping. “The pillow top allowed for enough give so my chest and tummy weren’t uncomfortably pressing into the surface,” she said. “My hips were lifted, and I overall felt that my spine was properly aligned. I could also sleep on this bed without a pillow, since the surface is so comfortable.” Still, we anticipate a little tenderness in the lumbar zone for back sleepers who have back pain, so we’d advise the Luxury-Firm model.

Part of the appeal of the Saatva Classic is its enhanced lumbar zone in the coil layer, which supports sleepers however they sleep. The bed also offers standout edge support. “I can actually feel the edge coils and reinforcement when I sit down, which I don’t think I’ve experienced on any other bed,” reported Livvi. “Getting in and out of bed is almost akin to sitting on a table. There’s no sinkage or slipping that I can notice, a sign of amazing edge support.”

The bed’s responsiveness is just as impressive. “It’s super bouncy, enough that I feel like I’m getting launched across the bed every time I move around on it,” Livvi said. “Some people might hate this feeling, but I love it. I switch from my side to stomach quite a bit when I sleep, and on the Saatva, I’m never caught feeling ‘stuck,’ even in the contours of the pillow top. It’s a pretty seamless roll.”

While the Classic earned full marks for pressure relief in both side and back sleeping positions from our average and heavyweight sleepers, that wasn’t the case for our lightweight sleeper. To ensure sufficient pressure relief, the softest model is probably the better choice for those who weigh 130 pounds or less.

On the downside, the Classic is a pricier pick. Before sales pricing, a queen costs $2,139. Fans of a classic innerspring will appreciate the rapid-fire response time. “This mattress is so bouncy and buoyant—cycling through the different sleep positions takes very little effort,” said tester Caitlin Giddings. “I didn’t sink into the mattress surface at all; I felt like I was almost floating on its surface.” That earned the bed 5/5 stars, and it performed just as well when we evaluated its edge support. Both seated and lying on the side, Caitlin found the Aurora Luxe incredibly stable. “I could lie at the far edge of the bed without feeling like the edge dipped even an inch,” she reported.

The bed’s scores dipped somewhat when it came to pressure relief. While Melanie, a medium-weight sleeper, only gave the Aurora Luxe 3/5 stars in the side sleeping position, she did note that she has sensitive shoulders. “My hips feel very cushioned but my shoulders feel more sensitive to the firmness of the bed.” The mattress earned 4 stars for pressure relief in both positions, but it is on the firmer side. Caitlin rated it 7.5/10 in all sleeping positions and found it best suited to back and stomach sleeping.

During testing, Caitlin rated this model a true medium-firm, or 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. It worked well in all sleep positions, especially on her side. “I felt the mattress mold to my curves and absorb any potential pressure in the shoulders and hips,” she said. “The soft pillow top cushioned my body like puffy dough, but I could also feel the firmer support beneath, which kept me from feeling like I was sinking or sagging very far into the mattress. My spine felt supported and aligned by the mattress’s deeper, firmer layers.”

That translated into excellent pressure relief, too. The Evolution earned scores of 4 and 5 from all of our testers when they assessed it on their sides and backs, with an overall pressure relief rating of 4.5/5.

The softer top posed a small issue when it came to responsiveness, though it was minor. “For the most part, it was easy to move around and switch positions, but the foamy pillow top slowed down my movements a bit,” Caitlin noted. “I expected to feel more bounce from beneath the pillow top, but the overall feeling of the bed was more of slow-moving foam and not springy coils.”

The Nolah Evolution is another expensive mattress, with a queen priced at $2,277. However, the brand has regular sales that can save you hundreds. The Evolution has a lifetime warranty, but Nolah does have a shorter sleep trial at 120 nights.
