The Avocado mattress company touts its Eco Organic as the most affordable organic mattress in the U.S. With environmental sensitivities on the rise, finding a mattress made from eco-friendly, natural materials makes sense for a healthy home. We examined the Eco Organic from every angle to see if it’s the right organic choice for your bedroom.
In 2024, the Mattress Clarity team helped 5,919 people buy a new bed—and more than 35,000 readers have relied on our expertise to help them choose a mattress since we began operating more than seven years ago. We put each mattress we review through a series of tests, focusing on how it functions and feels for different types of sleepers.
Upon first glance at the Eco Organic, we immediately noticed the neutral-colored mattress’s organic cotton cover, which felt both luxurious and cozy. While we were drawn to the aesthetically pleasing exterior of this GOLS-certified latex mattress, we were even more eager to evaluate what was inside.
Upon closer examination, our product testers found that the Eco Organic offered excellent edge support for individuals with mobility challenges. However, its firm feel may cause pressure points for lightweight sleepers who often benefit from a more plush, contouring feel. Since your body type affects how a mattress feels, we also paid special attention to how testers of different weights reacted to the bed in our testing.
The Avocado Eco Organic is the most affordable of Avocado’s models. It boasts organic latex, organic wool, and organic cotton, but not the hefty price tag of many beds that tout themselves as “natural” and eco-friendly. Our testers were taken with its unflagging edge support and thought its motion isolation was pretty good, too. But there’s no denying that its firmness will be polarizing—people looking for lots of pressure relief may be disappointed.
Avocado Eco Organic Mattress Performance: My Overall Rating
With each mattress we test, our team conducts a thorough inspection of the materials used in the bed’s construction and how the layers work together as a whole. The Eco Organic is a hybrid mattress, constructed with organic latex, wool, and cotton; plus pocketed coils made from recycled steel for a combination of support and comfort.
Once our testing was complete, this bed received an overall rating of 3.6/5 This score indicates some stellar individual scores along with some that are subpar. If you don’t tend to heat up during the night, but are looking for an eco-conscious mattress with great motion isolation and excellent edge support, the Avocado Eco Organic could be a good choice.

I Recommend the Avocado Eco Organic For…
- Stomach sleepers – This mattress boasts the firmness and solid support needed to keep the hips elevated and spine aligned for stomach sleepers, helping to reduce back pain.
- People with mobility issues – The Avocado Eco Organic’s strong edge support provides a steady, safe surface for easy sitting and getting in or out of bed.
- Adjustable bed frame users – The flexibility of this mattress makes it work well on a motorized bed that folds to a zero-gravity mode.

I Don’t Recommend the Avocado Eco Organic For…
- People who weigh less than 130 pounds – Our lightweight product tester found this bed too firm for comfort, noting increased pressure in their shoulders and neck. These shoppers may want to consider some alternative mattresses for petite people.
- Side sleepers – These folks require lots of pressure relief for their hips and shoulders, which they likely won’t find in this firm mattress.
- Those who sleep hot – This mattress features a natural wool material that, while cozy, may heat up too easily for those who prefer a cooler sleep.
How Firm Is the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress?

Our firmness scale goes from 1 to 10, with 1 being pillow-soft and 10 feeling like lying on a plank of wood. The industry average for most beds is medium-firm, which corresponds to a rating of 6.5 on our scale.
At an 8 out of 10, the Eco Organic feels harder than the average mattress, offering little sensation of sinking into the bed, especially for lighter sleepers.
Our lightweight product tester confirmed this: “It felt tight between my shoulders and more like I was just lying on top of this mattress.”
Certified sleep science coach Sosha Lewis, an average-weight sleeper, also struggled to get comfortable on it while resting on her side. While Sosha felt the firmness “was even and balanced enough,” the bed didn’t support her hips adequately and left her dissatisfied.
Ultimately we found that this bed’s firmness was best suited for heavyweight stomach sleepers. When product tester Marten Carlson, who is 6’7” and weighs 250 pounds, tried out the Avocado Eco Organic, he said, “The Avocado Eco Organic is a great match for me when I am on my stomach. I’m enjoying the support it provides, particularly under my hips.”

How Does the Avocado Eco Organic Feel for Different Body Types and Sleeping Positions?
The Eco Organic is a firm hybrid mattress that is best suited for stomach sleepers and heavier folks. However, the firmness makes it somewhat unpleasant for those who weigh less than 130 pounds and people who prefer to sleep on their sides.
Sleeper Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Light (under 130 lbs) | Unpleasant | Unpleasant | Unpleasant |
Average (130-230 lbs) | Unpleasant | Unpleasant | Good |
Heavy (over 230 lbs) | Good | Average | Excellent |
Heavyweight Tester – 6’7″, 250 lbs
Heavier side sleepers could get decent pressure relief on the Avocado Eco Organic mattress. Their weight could sink into that organic latex, helping to relieve pressure on their shoulders and hips. It should also provide enough firmness for back sleepers and stomach sleepers in this weight class. However, buyers over 300 pounds might want to consider a mattress made specifically for their body type.
Average-weight Tester – 5’4”, 170 lbs
Our average-weight tester, Sosha, wasn’t comfortable lying on her side or back on the mattress, though she felt fine on her stomach. “I did not like this bed in the side-sleeping position,” she said. “It was as if I could feel my spine curving and moving. It was also weirdly hard on my ribcage.”
Lightweight Tester – 5’6”, 129 lbs
Our lightweight product tester also described lying on her side as “very uncomfortable.” She said, “My elbow felt higher than my shoulders, but there was no relief, and my shoulders were sinking down. I could feel pressure building up even in the few minutes I was lying on this.” She reported similar discomfort on her back and stomach, as well.
Avocado Eco Organic In-Depth Test Results
Pressure Relief
A mattress that rates well in pressure relief should equally distribute your body weight over the surface of the bed. Adequate pressure relief reduces pain in the joints at the shoulders, hips, and lower back by keeping the spine aligned.
The amount of pressure varies for each person depending on body shape and size, sleeping position, and sensitivities from past injuries. To get a comprehensive overview of how a bed feels, we have testers of various body types evaluate a mattress on their back and sides.
Our lightweight tester thought the Eco Organic’s pressure relief was lacking. “My hips felt aligned, but there was no pressure relief while lying there. My elbow felt higher than my shoulders, which was a weird feeling. I didn’t think there was much pressure on my hips, but definitely in my shoulders and neck.”
Sosha, our product expert who represented sleepers from 130 to 230 pounds, also felt more pressure buildup than relief. “It wasn’t great around my shoulder, but my hip was the major issue,” she said. “It was sinking way too far down, leaving me in a V shape”.

However, lead mattress reviewer Marten Carlson saw potential for heavier sleepers to find comfort. “Their added weight could be enough to compress the dense latex, allowing their hips to sink in the right amount,” he said. Still, he added that “those over 300 lbs should consider a mattress for heavy people.”
These complaints led to the Eco Organic receiving a 2/5 in pressure relief, which is well below the average score of 3.8. Individuals with joint pain should take note and consider a mattress that will offer more of a cradling feel.
Edge Support
The Eco Organic performed significantly better in edge support testing, earning a perfect 5/5 in this vital category.
Strong edge support allows you to stand easily when getting out of bed. It’s useful for anyone with mobility concerns or seniors who could be hindered by a flimsy edge. Our lightweight product tester felt the Eco Organic performed well in this regard. “The edge support on this is great,” she said. “The mattress has a good bounce to it, which allows you to easily sit up from the edge. I did not need to use my hands, and I don’t think that anyone who is more senior would need assistance getting out of bed.”

Adequate edge support also makes it easier to spread out across the bed, giving couples more space. If you’re sharing the bed with a partner, it’s important to feel secure while resting near the perimeter. Thankfully, our tester reported positive results in this case, too: “I also felt very comfortable lying down on the edge. It was not difficult to switch positions from my back to my side and then to my stomach. I did not feel like I was going to roll off in any position.”
Additionally, we measure edge support by placing weighted plates on the side of the bed and measuring how much the side sinks. Ideally, the edge will sink fewer than 5”, indicating a sturdy feel. Results for the Eco Organic were consistent with our other edge support tests, achieving a 5/5.
Cooling
Hot sleepers will probably not find a solution in the Eco Organic, as it only earned a 2/5 in our cooling test.
We conducted our testing by using a thermal temperature gun to record the surface temperature of the mattress before anyone touched it, and then again after our tester lay on the mattress for seven minutes. The Eco Organic registered a 15.8-degree rise in temperature, which is almost double the amount we’d expect in a bed with excellent cooling.

However, although the temperature screening showed a major increase, our tester didn’t feel this bed heating up. “This mattress warmed up considerably just from looking at the testing data, but I could not feel it at all,” she said. “It has a cozy and comforting feel but not warm or hot. I think overall the mattress felt temperature neutral.”
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation refers to how well a mattress prevents the effects of a sleeper’s movement from rippling across the bed and potentially disturbing their sleep partner. In our sleep studio, we test motion isolation in two parts—the ripple test and the couple’s motion test.
With the ripple test, we place a glass of water on one side, get in and out of bed, and switch positions, noting the movement of the water in the glass.
The Eco Organic performed well in this first test, scoring 4/5 and earning praise from our tester Sosha. “The water barely rippled when I stood and sat gently and with control,” she said. “However, if I plopped down, there was a noticeable disturbance.”
During the couple’s motion test, Sosha felt that the bed’s performance depended on the consideration of your partner, stating, “Kate could feel me getting in and out of bed, but it didn’t disturb her. If I were being aggressive with my movements, she noticed it and thought it could cause some issues for light sleepers.”
However, based on the results of these tests, we think most sleepers should have no problem co-sleeping on this bed without disturbing their partners.
Response
A responsive mattress allows for ease of movement, an important metric for combination sleepers who change positions frequently. A bed’s response will also help determine how easy it is to get out of bed.
We test the responsiveness of the mattress by having testers change position and make note of how easy or difficult it feels. On the Eco Organic, Sosha had mixed feelings. “It wasn’t hard to turn over on this bed, but I found it a little difficult to get settled on my side,” she said. We gave the bed a score of 3/5 based on that assessment.
That said, we found impressive responsiveness in our second test, in which we placed a kettlebell on the bed and then removed it to see how quickly the mattress surfaced popped back up to its former loft. The Eco Organic bounced back in a speedy .39 seconds, so it definitely has some springiness to it.
Sinkage: Light

We gauge a bed’s sinkage by measuring how much the surface dips down when a weight is applied. The Eco Organic only sank 2.5” when a kettlebell was placed on the bed, which is much less than the average of 3.12”.
We noted only light sinkage along the edges of this mattress as well—consistent with the excellent edge support we found in our testing.
Bounce: High
Another measurement that indicates how easily we can move on a mattress is its bounce score. Our team drops a weighted ball to see how high it rebounds from the bed’s surface. The Eco Organic was sleepover-approved, with a bounce of 26.5”. The average mattress has a bounce height of 17.89”, so this latex bed should feel quite springy.
Noise
Too much noise from your bed can dramatically impact the quality of your sleep, but the Avocado Eco Organic excelled in this category, providing a silent experience in our sleep lab. “Zero noise with this mattress,” reported our tester.
Sex
To judge how a mattress performs for sexually active folks, we average the three most pertinent factors: noise, response, and edge support. The Eco Organic scored 4/5 here, with the excellent edge support supplying the space and resistance needed for sexual activity. Because this bed doesn’t make a significant amount of noise, waking the neighbors isn’t a concern.
Adjustable Base Compatibility
Despite the firmness of the Eco Organic, our testers found it easy to use on an adjustable base. Kayla praised this bed and others under the Avocado brand, like the Avocado Green mattress. “This mattress brand consistently has been one of the best I have seen work with an adjustable base,” she said. “It bends and conforms amazingly.”

Avocado Eco Organic Customer Experience Scores
We not only want to know how each mattress will contribute to a good night’s sleep, we’re also interested in the fine print. What can you expect from the Eco Organic? We looked at the complete customer experience by reviewing the trial period, warranty, and setup.
Trial Period
Avocado offers a 100-day sleep trial on its Eco Organic but requests that you first try the bed for at least 30 days. It also charges a $99 return fee. This is comparable to what most companies offer and is a fair amount of time to make a decision on whether the mattress is comfortable for you.
Warranty
The Avocado company typically offers a 25-year warranty on many of its mattresses, but only guarantees a 10-year warranty for the Eco Organic. This shorter warranty is due to differences in the Eco Organic’s construction—it has fewer layers, fewer coils, less height, and fewer support zones than other Avocado beds—and reflects the lower price of this product.
Unboxing and Moving
Our testers noted this mattress is too “floppy” to move alone and suggested having help getting it onto a foundation. They didn’t notice any off-gassing scent from this mattress when unboxing it.
Avocado Eco Organic Construction
In addition to evaluating the performance of the mattress, we look at what goes into its construction, which is especially important if sustainability is a priority for you when shopping for a new mattress.
Mattress Height & Weight

This mattress is 10” in height. The weight of the mattress ranges from 62 pounds for the twin and 110 pounds for the California king, with the queen weighing in at 94 pounds.
Materials
A hybrid mattress, the Eco Organic is constructed of both individually pocketed coils and organic latex. The Los Angeles-based company does not use chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, or polyurethane foams. Materials within the mattress are GOTS-certified and GOLS-certified, meaning its wool, cotton, and latex have met the stringent certification standards needed to earn an internationally respected organic label.
Layers

Beneath its cover, the Eco Organic is composed of three layers, all made with certified organic materials. There’s a top layer, a comfort layer, and a layer for support.
Testers loved the soft cover. “The cover of this mattress has a really amazing organic cotton and organic wool-blend feel,” our tester said. “It feels luxurious but also homey.” There are four reinforced handles for turning or flipping the mattress.
The next comfort layer is made with breathable organic wool, followed by two inches of organic Dunlop latex.
The support layer is built with recycled steel coils for stability, encased in fabric that promotes airflow.

Avocado Eco Organic vs. Birch Natural
The Birch Natural is Helix’s organic latex mattress and is composed of almost identical layers to the Eco Organic. Notably, however, the cover is an organic cotton that will sleep cooler than the wool and cotton blend of the Eco Organic. The remaining layers are comparable, composed of an organic latex and individually wrapped coils.
The Eco Organic should be the firmer of the two, with the Birch being described as medium-firm, which might be less appreciated by stomach sleepers who rely on firm support. The Birch Natural also comes at a slightly higher price point, and Helix further offers a Luxe version of the mattress for around $800 more.
The Birch Natural can be purchased online or at any of their showroom partners across the United States.

Avocado Eco Organic vs. Nolah Natural
The Nolah Natural is a hypoallergenic mattress manufactured with organic materials like the Eco Organic. Additionally, the Natural also offers zoned support using a coil system which helps promote proper spinal alignment. It’s a softer bed, rating a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which may be more comfortable for lightweight sleepers than the Eco Organic.
The softness of the Natural may also make it less than ideal for stomach sleepers, who may not feel properly supported. However, this is good news for side sleepers, who should feel supported and get adequate pressure relief.
This is a bouncier hybrid mattress overall, so couples should be aware of some motion transfer that could disturb their sleep. At $2,099, it’s also more expensive than the Eco Organic but does offer additional supportive layers that should make it a contender. Read more in our full Nolah Natural mattress review.

Avocado Eco Organic vs. Saatva Latex Hybrid
The Saatva Latex Hybrid is a luxurious, organic option, with a $2499 price tag that’s much heftier than the Eco Organic’s $1399. While the Saatva model does offer hand-tufted cushioning and a botanical antimicrobial treatment that the Eco Organic lacks, it did not score quite as high in edge support. The Avocado bed also functioned much better on an adjustable base, with the Saatva sliding around in some positions.
However, the Saatva bed does share many traits with the Avocado offering. Both beds have above-average firmness, suitable for stomach sleepers, so that their hips are elevated and not strained. And though the Eco Organic came out slightly ahead in this measurement, the Latex Hybrid’s strong edge support should work well for those with mobility issues.
At 13 inches, the Saatva Latex Hybrid is much thicker, which does contribute to the plush feel. It’s also an extremely durable mattress and uses softer Talalay latex that has more cushion and less bounce. Talalay latex is known not only for pressure relief but breathability, making the Latex Hybrid a better choice for hot sleepers. It was also the better choice for side sleepers (with the exception of our lightweight tester) than the Eco Organic, which received poor marks in this category.
