Amerisleep Vs. Puffy Overview
The Amerisleep AS3 is one of five mattress models from the Amerisleep brand. Those models include the Amerisleep AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4, and AS5, and they range from firm (AS1) to soft (AS5). This allows sleepers to select the firmness level that’s best suited to their body type and sleep position(s). The all-foam Amerisleep AS3 (which we’ve reviewed here) is smack-dab in the middle.
The all-foam Puffy mattress is made in the USA by the Puffy brand, which is a popular online mattress retailer. The Puffy is the brand’s flagship mattress model; it also sells the Puffy Lux and the Puffy Royal.

- These are both popular online mattresses.
- Both beds come with good customer service terms.
- They have similar base layers in the form of high-density foams.
- Both mattresses have a balanced foam feel.
Key Differences Between The Amerisleep And Puffy?
While these beds have several similarities, they have more differences. Here’s a quick overview.
- Amerisleep offers five firmness options. The Puffy comes in only one firmness.
- The Puffy is firmer than the Amerisleep AS3.
- These mattresses feature different materials in their comfort layers. The Amerisleep uses Bio-Pur foam, while the Puffy uses proprietary Cooling Cloud Foam.
- The Amerisleep AS3 features zoning in one of its comfort layers, while the Puffy is not zoned.
- The Puffy costs less than the Amerisleep mattresses.
Firmness And Feel Differences
To get to know the Amerisleep and Puffy mattresses better, let’s begin by exploring the firmness and feel of both mattresses. These factors will tell you a lot about which mattress might be better suited to your body type and preferred sleep position(s).
How Firm Are The Amerisleep And Puffy Mattresses?
We ranked the Amerisleep AS3 around a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and we ranked the Puffy around 7/10. The industry standard for average firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests the Amerisleep is right around medium-firm while the Puffy is a touch firmer-than-average. Both mattresses layer softer comfort layers over firmer, high-density support foams.
Keep in mind that firmness is a bit subjective. Depending on your body weight and preferences, you might find that one or both of these beds feels a touch firmer or softer than our assessment.
Sleeping On The Amerisleep And Puffy Mattresses
We personally tested each of these mattresses. Here’s how we felt in every position.
We felt great while back sleeping on the Amerisleep AS3. We enjoyed a pleasant balance of comfort and support.
We felt decent while side sleeping, though heavier people and side sleepers who prefer a plusher feel will want to consider the softer Amerisleep AS4 or AS5.
In our experience, the Amerisleep AS3 is not supportive enough for most stomach sleepers. People who spend all night in this position should consider the firmer Amerisleep AS1 or AS2.
As with the Amerisleep AS3, we enjoyed a good balance of pressure relief and spinal support while back sleeping on the Puffy.
We experienced some pressure on the shoulder and hip while side sleeping on this mattress. Lighter-weight sleepers will feel more comfortable here, but heavier folks who spend all night in this position will want to seek out a mattress for side sleepers.
The Puffy felt a touch too soft for stomach sleeping. Our hips bowed into the mattress a bit too far and tugged the spine out of alignment.
What Do The Amerisleep And Puffy Mattresses Feel Like?
The Amerisleep AS3 has some memory foam in its top layers, so it has a bit of the slow-moving feel that people tend to associate with memory foam. At the same time, it’s bouncier than conventional memory foam. This means it’s pretty easy to move around on top of the bed.
Much like the Amerisleep AS3, the Puffy has a balanced foam feel with just a bit of that memory foam feel on top. It’s not too hard to change positions and shift around on this mattress.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
Average-weight back sleepers should enjoy a blend of pressure relief and spinal support (including especially good lumbar support) on the Amerisleep AS3. This mattress could offer decent pressure relief for average-weight side sleepers, though folks who are on the heavier end of the weight spectrum will probably want a plusher mattress. The Amerisleep AS3 is not supportive enough for average-weight stomach sleepers.
The Puffy should be a good match for average-weight back and side sleepers, who will enjoy a blend of pressure relief and spinal support. It could be supportive enough for average-weight stomach sleepers on the lighter end of the spectrum, but sleepers who weigh closer to 230 pounds will probably need to look for a more supportive mattress.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
The Amerisleep AS3 is probably not supportive enough for heavyweight back sleepers, who might want to consider the firmer Amerisleep AS1 or AS2 or a mattress made for heavy people. Heavyweight side sleepers will probably need a plusher mattress, such as the Amerisleep AS4. The Amerisleep AS3 is not supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers.
Back sleepers who weigh close to 230 pounds should find enough support on the Puffy, while folks who weigh much more than that will need a more supportive mattress. Heavyweight side sleepers will definitely not get enough pressure relief on this mattress. The Puffy is also not a good match for heavyweight stomach sleepers, who won’t receive enough spinal support.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
The Amerisleep AS3 should be a good match for both lightweight back sleepers and lightweight side sleepers. Both categories of sleepers should enjoy a balance of comfort and support. The Amerisleep AS3 might be supportive enough for lightweight stomach sleepers, though folks who prefer a firmer feel will want to look elsewhere.
The Puffy should be a good option for lightweight sleepers of all stripes. Lightweight back, side, and stomach sleepers should all enjoy comfortable and supported sleep on this mattress.
Mattress Construction Differences
Let’s pop the hood (or cover) on these mattresses and take a look inside! We’ll assess each layer of these beds’ constructions and share how different materials affect performance and feel.
The Amerisleep AS3 has a soft and breathable cover that allows for airflow through the top of the mattress.
The Puffy’s polyester cover is very soft and breathable.
The Amerisleep AS3’s top comfort layer is made from Bio-Pur foam, open-celled foam that’s a bit bouncier and more breathable than standard memory foam. This layer’s thickness varies depending on the model; the AS1 has the thinnest layer, the AS5 has the thickest, and the AS3 is right in the middle. Underneath the Bio-Pur foam, there’s a HIVE transition layer with a zoned construction. This makes the mattress slightly firmer in certain areas (for extra support) and softer in others (for added pressure relief). The AS1 does not have this transition layer.
The main comfort layer on the Puffy is made from a Cooling Cloud layer that has some of the slow-moving feel of memory foam and is infused with gel to help with cooling. Below this layer, there’s a Climate Comfort Layer that’s firmer and more responsive; this layer adds some bounce to the top of the mattress.
The Amerisleep’s support layer is made from a Bio-Core base foam that’s high-density and supportive.
The Puffy’s base layer is also made from a high-density support foam that maintains the mattress’s overall structure.
The Amerisleep AS3 is 12” tall, while the Puffy is a bit shorter at 10”.

Amerisleep And Puffy Performance Differences
We pitted these mattresses head-to-head in a series of performance tests. Let’s see how they stack up!
Sleeping Hot Or Cold
We called this one a tie. Both mattresses use breathable covers and foams to promote airflow. Still, the all-foam construction on both beds means they might trap some heat.
The Puffy wins out here. Its comfort layers do a great job of absorbing motion, which limits disturbances across the surface of the mattress. This should be a great mattress for couples.
The Amerisleep wins this category. It’s a more substantial mattress, and we felt more secure while sitting and lying down near its edges.
The Amerisleep takes the win. Again, it’s a more substantial mattress, which means it’s liable to last longer.
We observed a bit of off-gassing from both the Amerisleep and the Puffy. This should go away within a few days.
We didn’t observe any notable noise while moving around on either of these mattresses. Because the Amerisleep and the Puffy are both all-foam, they should stay noise-free over the long-term.
Neither one of these mattresses is the most responsive bed around, but they could both still be good mattresses for sex. Sexual partners shouldn’t feel stuck in either bed, and it’s fairly easy to change positions.
Thinking about purchasing the Amerisleep or the Puffy? Here’s a quick look at the company policies that you’ll encounter.

The Puffy’s sleep trial is just a tiny bit longer (by a single day!) at 101 nights.
