Looking to upgrade your sleep experience without paying a fortune for a smart bed? You might be a candidate for an adjustable bed frame. This type of mattress base transforms any old mattress into a high-tech sleep system with customizable features like head and foot elevation, massage, or even under-bed lighting. And it’s not just for showing off—studies have reported that an adjustable bed can also help to improve sleep quality and duration.
“Adjustable bases can also help with spinal alignment, which is important for overall comfort and support during sleep,” adds our chief medical advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta. “They might also be helpful for sleepers who have sleep apnea, acid reflux, or other concerns that may require them to sleep with their upper half elevated.”
But not every mattress is suited for an adjustable base. Some brands may advertise their beds as such, but sometimes in the studio, these beds are slipping and sliding off the frame, refusing to conform. Rather than take the chance yourself, we’ve gathered a list of 8 beds that are sure to work with any adjustable bed frame and have you well on your way to customizable sleep.
At Mattress Clarity, we’ve tested more than 500 mattresses and 150 sleep accessories, including adjustable bases. Our reviews have helped more than 35,000 people find the right mattress, with 5,919 satisfied customers in 2024 alone. We relied not just on this experience, but also on input from physical therapist Dr. Hannah Habeeb, as well as aforementioned Dr. Raj Dasgupta (MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM) for a specialized approach. Needless to say, these top mattresses should be the perfect match for an adjustable base.
Our Verdict: What’s the Best Mattress for an Adjustable Base?
Our expert reviewers chose the Helix Midnight Luxe as the best mattress for an adjustable base due to its zoned coils which are firmer toward the center of the mattress, providing extra lumbar support. It’s a medium-firm mattress that should work for plenty of different sleeper types, scoring high across the board in our tests, including adjustable base compatibility.

What Matters Most in a Mattress for an Adjustable Base
Our testing methodology includes a range of evaluation methods, in which we judge everything from a bed’s construction to the company policies that come alongside it. For adjustable bases, we focused on performance categories that we think will be most pertinent to creating the best adjustable sleep system.
Adjustable basecompatibility – Most modern mattresses are advertised as adjustable-base compatible, but we’ve found that this isn’t always the case. Some beds conform better to the frame than others, so we always test a new mattress on an adjustable base in our studio. Our testers will cycle through the preset positions (usually TV, zero-gravity, and manual readjustment) and look for any signs of gapping, slipping, or refusal to bend. Every mattress on this list performed well in our test, but we’ll note if any showed some minor issues to look out for.
Support – If your mattress is going to be bent and folded every which way, it’s important that it still provides plenty of support while remaining malleable. A supportive mattress will keep your spine aligned in its proper posture. This can look different depending on your preferred sleeping position. Studies show that medium-firm mattresses are the best for spinal alignment and overall comfort, but some mattress feels will appeal to other sleeper types. We made sure to collect a range of beds that will fit a number of body types, preferred sleeping positions, and any other concerns or preferences you may have.
Pressure relief – Aside from fancy features, many folks choose adjustable bases for pain concerns. It’s important, then, that your mattress offers plenty of pressure relief as you manipulate it into your desired position. The base and mattress can work together to distribute the pressure evenly across the body. During testing, we have multiple testers of varying body types evaluate the amount of pressure they feel on their hips, shoulders, and lower back when lying on their back and side. Their thoughts and ratings help us determine the average score for pressure relief.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a premium medium-firm mattress that offers a hotel-like feel for a relatively affordable price. Its zoned support and supportive coil layers make it a great option for back sleepers. It likely isn’t firm enough for most stomach sleepers, though. If you’re looking for a more supportive bed, check out the Titan Plus. Learn more in our video review.
The Helix Midnight Luxe is an oft-recommended favorite at Mattress Clarity, a luxury hybrid providing plenty of cushioning, comfort, and support. It scored 4s and above across the board in our testing, and I awarded its highest ratings in edge support (4.8/5) and cooling (4.5/5). I also gave it a 5/5 score on our adjustable base test; the bed only showed minor gapping at the center, which is fairly typical and no cause for concern. If I had the room for it, I’d consider getting this mattress and base combo myself!
I rated this mattress at 6/10 on our firmness scale, which is just a touch softer than medium-firm. I most enjoyed the mattress on my side and back, finding the pillow top to be contoured to my hips, shoulders, and lower back, providing nice cushioning comfort. Heavyweight tester Caine Wilkes agreed, recommending the bed for his sleeper type. “I feel pretty aligned overall and well supported,” he said. “The plush top feels really nice and comfortable, while the bottom layers are more supportive.
Dr. Hannah Habeeb agreed with our assessment and further recommended the bed for all those with pain concerns, who may find further relief with an adjustable base. “It cushions enough that people with arthritic pain, chronic pain, and joint pain, would find support and relief,” she said. “I feel like I want to make snow angels on top of it because it is so silky and comfortable.”
The support this mattress offers extends to the very edges, creating a sturdy perimeter that doesn’t dip or bend when bearing weight. I didn’t notice any difference between lying down and sitting at the very edge of the bed. It means this mattress should ensure it holds its shape as you maneuver it into its desired position on the base. However, I noticed more sinkage when tying my shoe at the foot of the bed—something to keep in mind for older adults who need a reliable edge.
As mentioned, this mattress also scored high in cooling, which should benefit hot sleepers wanting an adjustable sleep system. When I lay on the surface of the mattress, I found it felt cool to the touch.
If you’re a combination sleeper like me, you might gravitate towards a hybrid mattress because of its bouncy coils. I’ll note that, although I gave this bed a 4/5 for responsiveness, I didn’t find it as bouncy as I’d have liked. The thick pillow top effectively canceled out the springs below, and I noticed it was more difficult to roll over from my stomach onto my back or side. If you want a bouncier hybrid, you might like the DreamCloud mattress instead.

Pros of the DreamCloud
It is a good option for back sleepers. While it is a bit firmer than average, its balance of comfort and support will keep the spine in neutral alignment.
You shouldn’t be sleeping too hot on this mattress. The breathable cover, gel-infused foam, and airflow-promoting coils should prevent the mattress from trapping heat.
You should never feel stuck in this mattress. The DreamCloud is bouncy and responsive, so you will have no trouble moving around and changing positions.
The DreamCloud is a good value option. Hybrid mattresses can be quite pricey, but the DreamCloud is surprisingly affordable.
Cons of the DreamCloud

The DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress that offers great support for back sleepers and nice cooling for hot sleepers. Its mix of foam and coils ensures you get the right amount of support, while its breathable materials ensure you don’t sleep too hot. It is a bouncier mattress, and if you prefer more of a memory foam feel, consider the Nectar mattress. Learn more in our video review.
Firm mattresses are not only great picks for support and lift, but they can also work great on adjustable beds, holding their shape as they’re bent and folded into all sorts of positions. If you’re looking for a firm bed that won’t break the bank (or that won’t break on an adjustable base), consider the DreamCloud.
This hybrid has an on-top feel that’s balanced by its luxurious pillow top, alongside coils that provide plenty of bounce. The bed earned its highest score for response, a perfect 5/5, and also stunned in our adjustable base test. Our in-house tester had no complaints: “This mattress worked pretty well with the base,” she said. “It did a good job of not gapping too much or bunching up with the cover.”
We rated the DreamCloud at a 7.5/10 on our firmness scale, a feel that should appeal to folks who need extra support. Dr. Hannah Habeeb noted its propensity for comfort in all sleeping positions: “It provides really nice support for the lumbar spine when back and side sleeping,” she said, “On the stomach, there’s enough lift at the hips to keep the lower back perfectly straight.”
This was echoed by our testers. “I definitely feel more on the bed than in the bed,” said lightweight tester Riley Otis. She added that she enjoyed the pressure relief the DreamCloud offered on her side and back, an area in which the bed scored a respectable 4/5. Average-weight tester Sosha Lewis preferred the bed on her back, noting it kept the hips lifted to prevent uncomfortable dipping at the center of the bed.
Regardless of which position you choose, switching between them should be a breeze with how bouncy this bed is. Our in-house tester was able to move around on the surface of the mattress without incident throughout testing. “I didn’t feel stuck in the mattress or that I was fighting the cover to move around,” she said.
Our tester also noted that these bouncy springs helped keep the perimeter of the mattress from sinking beneath her weight. “This mattress has amazing edge support and helps lift you out of the bed,” she said. “It has a bouncy-like feel, and the edge barely collapses when sitting or lying down.” She rated edge support at 4.4/5.
With all this talk of bounce, I was surprised to see that the DreamCloud scored relatively well in our motion isolation test. The bouncier a bed, the more likely movement is to travel across the mattress surface and disturb whoever’s resting on the other side. Our tester noted that she couldn’t feel her fellow tester getting in and out of bed; however, it wasn’t completely smooth sailing. “This mattress does have quite a bit of bounce to it, so I more so felt my partner changing positions beside me,” she said.
As an extremely light sleeper myself, I’m hesitant to recommend the bed to couples who include them. They might fare better on a foam bed like the DreamCloud Premier Memory Foam.

The Leesa Original mattress features high-density foam for a balance of comfort and support, suiting a range of sleeping styles. This bed comes at an affordable price-point. Learn more in our video review.
The dense, squishy makeup of memory foam offers the right malleability for adjustable bases, which is why we frequently recommend them for adjustable bases. There are a prolific number of foam beds out there, though, so it can be tough to choose. For folks looking to pair one with an adjustable base, let me direct you to the Leesa Original.
This firm, all-foam bed earned a plethora of high ratings in our tests. It scored perfectly for cooling and response, two areas we don’t often see these cushy, dense beds excelling in. Our testers found this mattress conformed excellently to the adjustable base—just be sure to only maneuver it once everyone’s in bed, otherwise it might pop up from the base!
The Leesa Original came in at a 8/10 on our firmness scale, but it still scored high in our pressure relief tests (4.5/5), meaning despite being on the firmer side, it should offer plenty of cushion for sensitive areas. Take it from heavyweight tester Caine Wilkes: “I feel very supported for an all-foam mattress,” he said. “I don’t feel any points of pressure.”
Lightweight tester Riley Otis had a similar experience, praising the bed as a great option for back sleepers. “My hips and shoulders feel level and I have nice lumbar support,” she said. “I don’t have any pain or pressure, and I feel very comfortable, cozy, and supported.”
This firmer feel also gave the bed a surprising amount of response. “When changing positions, it was very easy, and I didn’t notice any effort needed to lift my body out of the mattress,” said our in-house tester. She also found that this helped when lying on the very edge of the mattress, as it helped the mattress spring back when she shifted between sleeping positions. However, there was more sinkage when she sat down on the edge, resulting in a 4/5 score for edge support.
Cooling was another area the Leesa Original excelled. Our tester used a thermal gun to measure the increase in surface temperature after lying on the surface for about seven minutes. She recorded a 4.5-degree increase, almost half of what we typically see, at 7.1 degrees. “I felt like the mattress was cool to touch at first and almost a little chilly,” she added. “As I lay there, I noticed it did get more comfortable in temperature, but never too warm.”
While our testers adored the firmer feel of this mattress, it may not be for all shoppers. If you’re looking to sink deeply into your mattress and feel hugged by contouring foams, that won’t be the case here. You may want to check out a bed with a more traditional foam feel, like the Nectar Classic Hybrid.

The Nectar Classic Hybrid is an affordable hybird mattress that offers lots of pressure relief and supportive contouring. It works well for most side and back sleepers, because it helps cushion shoulders and hips. However, the Nectar mattress isn’t supportive enough for most stomach sleepers. Watch our full Nectar Classic Hybrid video review.
Beds with coils are top picks if you like support, bounce, and durability—but some hybrids have trouble conforming to an adjustable base because of the hardware within. The Nectar Classic Hybrid is different. This mattress features an individually wrapped coil system, as well as thick, plush memory foam on top.
This combination allows the bed to conform to the base, which our testers praised. “This is one of my favorite beds on an adjustable base,” said my colleague Sosha Lewis. It also results in a balanced, soft, and contouring mattress. The mattress earned its highest score in cooling (4.5/5) and a respectable 4/5 rating for pressure relief.
I rated the Nectar Classic Hybrid at a 5.5/10 on our firmness scale, which skews more medium or soft. It has that typical memory-foam sink despite the coils underneath providing good lift, earning a 4/5 rating for pressure relief overall. Our testers came to a consensus that back-sleeping was the most comfortable on this bed, including me. Dr. Hannah Habeeb agreed, adding, “For those with back pain, I think the support and pressure-relieving aspect will be a great match.”
Even though the bed is softer, heavyweight tester Matt Shickling was able to get enough support from the coils below. “It has a memory foam feel for a hybrid, but it’s a bit more supportive than that, which is important for heavy sleepers,” he said.
The balanced feel of this mattress extends to its performance in categories such as response and motion isolation, both of which scored 4/5. These areas are usually at odds, as the bouncier a bed is, the more likely motion is to travel across the surface. The Nectar Classic Hybrid absorbs motion extremely well for a hybrid; as a light sleeper, I wasn’t jostled by any of my fellow tester’s movements on the other side of the bed.
I was also able to move around on the surface of the mattress with more ease than on a traditional foam bed, but that cushy pillow top still had a doughy feel that required some extra effort to move around. You might have trouble rolling over fully, but most combination sleepers should be satisfied.
What really impressed me about the Nectar was its cooling. Hybrid beds are typically breathable because they have coils that allow for airflow, but I thought the dense foam on top would trap more heat than the coils could offset. However, the bed is swaddled in a cooling cover that has a slightly cool-to-the-touch feel. It helped to dissipate heat at the surface as I lay on the bed for a few minutes, never feeling sweaty or overheated. Hot sleepers should love it.
The bed’s softer feel, while great for molding into an adjustable base, doesn’t bode well for supportive edges. I noticed them dipping quite a bit when I lay and sat down at the perimeter of the bed. The further I scooched toward the edge, the more liable I felt to slip right off. Older adults and those with mobility concerns may want to look for a sturdier perimeter, like the Saatva Zenhaven.

An adjustable base can upgrade your sleeping experience, so why not add more luxury by choosing a high-end mattress to complement it? The Birch Luxe Natural is a luxury latex mattress. Latex is an excellent material for adjustable bases because of its pliant and buoyant construction. When our in-house tester raised the head and foot of the base, she reported that there was “no lifting” from the mattress. Since the Birch Luxe remained flush with the frame, the tester gave iit a 5/5 for adjustable-base compatibility. The mattress also earned high scores in response (5/5) and edge support (4.7/5), thanks to its bouncy, sturdy feel.
The Luxe is an upgraded version of the brand’s original Birch mattress, another eco-conscious latex bed that has a similar feel. However, the Birch Luxe is stacked with extra layers of organic cotton and wool, culminating in a plush pillow top. Luxury shoppers should also be pleased that their investment comes with a lifetime warranty.
While the Birch Luxe is plenty bouncy, it also provided our testers with ample pressure relief when sleeping on their side and back, earning a 4.3/5 score for overall pressure relief. Our average-weight tester noted that, although she didn’t sink in as much as she’d have liked, it felt supportive and cushioning. “This mattress is comfortable and doesn’t create any uncomfortable positions,” she said. “My spine feels fully aligned.”
The bed earned a 7/10 on our firmness scale, which is just a smidge firmer than standard medium-firm. This firmness is complemented by the buoyant nature of latex, which makes it easy to move around on the surface of the bed when switching positions. “I don’t feel like the mattress is fighting me, and the cover is really flat so I don’t have issues moving around,” our tester explained as she moved on the surface of the mattress.
This firmness also helped the latex retain its shape when bearing weight, especially at the edges. “I don’t feel like I am sliding off or need my hands for support,” our tester said as she sat down at the perimeter. “I’m noticing a bounce that’s assisting me when I get out of the bed.” If you rely on a sturdy perimeter for mundane activities like tying your shoes or sleeping with one leg off the mattress, it shouldn’t be a problem on the Birch Luxe.
Latex’s bouncy nature can make things difficult if you share the bed with a partner. When our tester lay down on this bed, she could feel her fellow product expert getting in and out of bed—with enough force that it jostled her side. As a light sleeper myself, I don’t think I could sleep if my partner’s tossing and turning rocked the boat. I’d recommend checking out a hybrid with motion-absorbing foams on top, like the Helix Midnight Luxe.

Zenhaven is a latex bed made with all-natural materials, so it’s no surprise it’s one of the best organic mattresses available. The Zenhaven also boasts a durable construction and an impressive lifetime warranty.
Side sleepers looking for an adjustable mattress will want one that relieves pressure around the hips and shoulders, while also being compatible with an adjustable frame. The Saatva Zenhaven is one such bed, a latex mattress that performed well in terms of pressure relief (earning 4.5/5) and in our adjustable base test. My colleague Kenny Timper said, “If there’s one bed that should work with any adjustable base, it’s this one.” He also quite enjoyed the mattress when lying on his side, calling it “soft and comfortable” in this position.
Kenny noted that the latex “bends and flops” when you maneuver the mattress on an adjustable base, and it’s this malleability that also makes it great for side sleepers. Although it doesn’t contour to your body like memory foam, it brings plenty of cushioning and allows your hips and shoulders to sink in just right. “I didn’t feel any pressure building up on my side while lying down on this mattress,” Kenny said, even after rating the mattress at a slightly firmer 7/10 on our scale.
Heavyweight tester Caine Wilkes appreciated the feel of this mattress on his side. “I usually enjoy firmer mattresses, and this one checks out,” he said. “My hips feel aligned with my shoulders.” Lightweight tester Bojana Galic enjoyed the “on-top” feel of the mattress for her body type. “I like how my body is not sinking in or dipping in anywhere,” she said. Side sleepers who like a firm yet pressure-relieving mattress will be more than satisfied with the Zenhaven.
If you happen to switch between your side and any other sleeping position, the latex in the Zenhaven’s construction will also make repositioning seamless. “The Zenhaven is just as responsive as Saatva’s other innerspring and hybrid offerings,” Kenny said. “It’s comfortable and beyond easy to maneuver on.” He rated responsiveness for this mattress at a perfect 5/5 score, which should be a boon for combination side sleepers.
Kenny also found that the mattress held its shape along the edges. He noted that there was minimal to no sinkage when resting along the perimeter, regardless of what position he took. “I never felt like I was going to roll off of this mattress,” he said. “If you’re someone who tends to gravitate toward the perimeter of the bed, I think you can sleep on this mattress with confidence.” He gave another 5/5 rating for edge support.
Side sleepers who share the bed with a partner, though, may have to contend with some tossing and turning. Kenny hopped into bed alongside fellow tester Sosha Lewis to mimic what it would be like for two people to sleep on the Zenhaven at the same time. “I could feel Sosha get in and out of bed, and everything in between,” he said. He ultimately rated motion isolation at 3/5 and wouldn’t recommend the mattress for light sleepers who share the bed. These folks might want to check out the Nectar Classic Hybrid.

The Titan Plus mattress works well for many heavyweight back and stomach sleepers. It’s quite firm, coming in at 9/10 on our firmness scale. This means that many side sleepers won’t get the pressure relief they need along their shoulders and hips. Watch our Titan Plus mattress review video to learn more.
Sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may have been let down by so-called supportive mattresses, but this won’t be a problem with the Titan Plus. This mattress was designed with plus-size sleepers in mind, featuring a sturdy coil unit that keeps these sleepers from sinking in too far and compromising their spinal alignment.
This mattress also performed well in our adjustable base test, with our in-house tester able to put it into exaggerated positions without any slipping or sliding. As a result, she awarded it a 5/5 rating for this performance. The bed also earned perfect scores for edge support and response, a sign of its durability and mega-bounce for heavy combination sleepers.
When folks think more supportive, they might think of extra-firm mattresses, which can also sound uncomfortable to some sleepers. This isn’t the case for the Titan Plus, which came in at a 7/10 on our firmness scale, a half-step higher than medium-firm. Even Dr. Hannah Habeeb, an average-weight sleeper, was able to find comfort on this mattress despite not being the target demographic. “I don’t feel pressure on my hip or shoulder,” she said while resting on her side. “My weight feels very evenly distributed.”
Heavyweight tester Matt Schickling, however, most preferred the mattress on his back. “It feels like it’s contouring my back better than it contoured my side,” he said. “It feels more pressure-relieving.” Lightweight tester Cait Giddings also commented that she thought the bed could work for stomach sleepers. “When I flopped down on it on my stomach, my hips and shoulders felt elevated and aligned,” she said. This shows that a wide variety of sleeper types, not just heavy folks, should be able to find comfort on this bed.
Regardless of which sleeping position you take up during the night, the Titan Plus has plenty of response to help toggle through them. Cait took note of the thin comfort layer as soon as she hopped onto the bed to begin the response test. “The mattress essentially turns into a springboard when you need to move around,” she said. “You can push off and use that momentum to get in and out of the bed or into any sleep position almost instantly.”
Cait also noticed the springy nature of the bed when testing out its edge support, which helped her get in and out of bed with a little boost. But she particularly enjoyed lying down at the perimeter: “No matter how close I got to the edge of the bed—even when I dangled off the side to reach my phone on the floor—the bed supported me with no dipping or sagging,” she said, rating edge support at 5/5 and recommending it for seniors and those with mobility concerns.
With its firm, springy nature, the Titan Plus should appeal to many heavy sleepers, but it may fall short for other sleeper types. For one, it offered subpar performance in our cooling test, so I wouldn’t feel comfortable recommending it for hot sleepers. Dr. Hannah Habeeb also noted that some sleepers under 130 pounds could encounter issues: “Light sleepers won’t find much sinkage on this mattress and won’t experience enough cushioning to relieve pressure at the joints,” she said.
If you’re a lightweight sleeper looking for contouring, you might like the Avocado Green mattress instead. You can read more about this bed, though, in our full Titan Plus mattress review.

The Avocado Green is a luxury medium-firm mattress that caters to those looking for a mattress featuring organic and natural construction. Its hybrid construction supports most back sleepers and some side sleepers while also helping it excel at cooling. View our full Avocado Green video review for more information.
Environmentally conscious shoppers looking for a bed that works with their adjustable base should take a look at the Avocado Green. This latex mattress is made from organic latex, wool, and cotton, providing a comfortable and natural sleep experience. This bed conformed to the base with ease, thanks to its bouncy, squishy nature, for which it also earned a 5/5 response score. “Out of all the mattresses we tested, this one worked the best on an adjustable frame,” said our in-house tester.
The Avocado mattress is available in three firmness options: Firm, Medium, and Plush. We tried out the Medium model and rated it at 7/10 on our firmness scale, slightly firmer than medium-firm. However, our testers, including physical therapist Dr. Hannah Habeeb, found this bed to be comfortable and well-cushioned. “My shoulder sinks right in, which feels really nice and pressure-relieving,” said Dr. Habeeb when sleeping on her side. “It’s very squishy and contours to my body really well.”
The bed earned a 4.2/5 for overall pressure relief. My colleague Kate Meier noted that while pressure-relieving, this bed didn’t have you sinking deeply like memory foam would. “You lie ‘on’ this bed, not ‘in’ it, and it’s definitely firmer than other mattresses I’ve tested,” she said.
This on-top feeling also furthers the latex mattress’s innate bounce. Kate found this bed “incredibly easy to move around on” as she cycled through each sleeping position. “I feel like you could tie your hands behind your back and still comfortably move among positions on this bed,” she added. With a response score of 5/5, combination sleepers will be able to happily launch themselves across the bed without feeling “stuck” in the bed at any point.
Kate noticed that this on-top feeling extended to the edges. She only noticed a tiny bit of sinkage when seated at the very edge of the bed, but added, “I didn’t feel like I would slip off.” She mentioned that the foot of the bed was a different story, though, and recommended folks stay away from the ends of the bed for seated activities. However, lying down at the edge was a stellar experience. “This bed knocks it out of the park with lying down edge support in all positions,” she said. Based on her results, she rated edge support at 4.6/5.
Unfortunately, with this bed’s amazing bounce, it falls victim to the motion isolation test. When Kate got into bed alongside a fellow tester, she could feel “every bit of movement” as he moved around on the other side. We’ve come to expect this from latex beds (with some rare exceptions), so it isn’t too surprising, but it’s still bad news for light sleepers like myself. If you want a bed that has my stamp of approval for comfortable co-sleeping, check out the Nectar Classic Hybrid.
Other Mattresses for Adjustable Beds We Researched
Didn’t see what you were looking for? Here are some other beds that we often recommend that didn’t make the cut. These are solid beds, but they just missed the cut by requiring some extra finagling to get them to bend and stick to an adjustable frame. They’re all plenty comfortable and supportive.
WinkBed – The WinkBed offers three firmness options (Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer) to provide a comfortable and supportive mattress for sleepers of almost all body types and sleep positions. Its pillow top provides cushioning while its durable coil unit brings lift to keep your spine aligned. However, though it’s marketed as adjustable-base compatible, we noticed it didn’t perform as well as we’d liked in our studio; there was a noticeable gap between us and the floor.
Nectar Classic Memory Foam– This memory foam mattress provides ample cushioning and a firm, yet slow-moving feel that strikes a nice balance for most sleepers. But I put this mattress on an adjustable base and found it really didn’t want to smush down. I thought the Nectar Classic Hybrid performed significantly better in this category, so it ultimately won out over this model.
Nolah Evolution– This luxury mattress offers excellent pressure relief and support, available in multiple firmness options for your preference. The hybrid design makes the Nolah Evolution great at isolating motion despite having an innerspring foundation. This is great for couples sharing a bed who have issues waking each other up at night. Unfortunately, it didn’t wow us in our adjustable base test, but it might conform a bit better after repeated use when it starts to soften up.
How We Tested the Mattresses for Adjustable Bases
A mattress for an adjustable base should work seamlessly with the base, providing the necessary support and comfort for the sleeper. Here’s how we gauged each category in our testing and decided which beds would make our final list.
Adjustable Base Compatibility
For a mattress to work effectively alongside an adjustable base, it must be able to fit snugly on the frame and move smoothly with it without slipping off. Some beds that have trouble conforming with the shape of the base may leave gaps between the bed and the base. To see if this is an issue with a mattress, we’ll try it out on an adjustable base while we’re testing it in our studio.
We cycle through some common positions, raising the head and foot of the bed independently to contort the bed into every possible configuration a sleeper might want. Two testers will get on top of the mattress to get the best results, as the more weight is on a bed, the better it will fit the base. We focus on the most common: zero gravity (which involves slightly adjusting the head and feet to achieve less pressure on the spine) and TV-watching (sitting up straight, as if to read or watch television). If the bed performs well in these categories, we consider it adjustable-base compatible.
Support
While a mattress for an adjustable bed should be able to bend, it should also be sturdy enough to support whoever is sleeping on it. We judge support by lying down on the surface of the bed in each sleeping position: back, side, and stomach. A supportive mattress will keep the spine aligned and oriented in its proper position, following the natural S-curve. If we feel like everything is in line, nothing feeling too elevated or dipping too far, we would consider a bed to have great support.
Pressure Relief
Also important to consider alongside support is pressure relief. Pressure points occur when parts of your body dig into the mattress, such as areas like your shoulders, hips, or other sensitive joints. A mattress with good pressure relief will cradle these areas to ensure pressure doesn’t build up, which can cause discomfort or even pain. This is usually achieved through the use of softer, cushioning foam or latex.
We test a bed’s pressure-relieving ability using a specialized mat. This mat is rolled out over the surface of the bed before a tester hops in. The mat records where pressure builds up along their body, creating a color-coded map to show areas of high and low pressure. We generally want to see more low pressure, as this means less strain on the tester’s body. We try to ensure a tester of each weight category gets on the bed on both their back and side to get a feel for how pressure will be relieved for a variety of sleepers in each position. Based on the results of the pressure map and feedback from our testers, we rate a bed’s ability to relieve pressure out of 5.
What Else Is Important When Buying a Mattress for an Adjustable Bed?
Aside from the parameters above, you might want a bed that suits your unique preferences and needs. Here are some additional categories I recommend exploring before making your final purchase.
Type of Mattress
Certain mattress types fare better on adjustable bases than others. I’ll go over the most common types and how well they’ll work for an adjustable bed.
A foam bed on an adjustable base.A hybrid bed on an adjustable base.
Foam
Memory foam mattresses are a great match for adjustable bases because they are so flexible. Without coils, they are able to stay flush against the adjustable base while you raise and lower it. Just make sure that your memory foam mattress features durable, high-density foam. Low-quality memory foam mattresses might start to lose their shape if you use an adjustable base.
Foam mattresses are also great for motion isolation and cushioning because of their dense, slow-moving nature. They’re also less expensive than other mattress types. They may not be the bounciest, though, and some traditional foam beds are notorious for trapping heat.
Innerspring
Innerspring mattresses are made of a continuous coil unit and a very thin comfort layer on top. These coils are all interconnected, making the mattress less flexible. Therefore, they aren’t the best for adjustable bases. That being said, some innerspring mattresses are compatible with adjustable bases. Just do your research before buying.
Innerspring beds are best for folks who want support above all. They tend to be super bouncy and on the firmer side. They’re not great if you want cradling, cushioning, or to sink deeply into your mattress surface.
Hybrid
Hybrid mattresses can also work well with adjustable bases, but pay attention to what type of coils are in the mattress. Most hybrid mattresses feature pocketed coils that are flexible and work with adjustable beds.
Hybrid beds are some of the most varied, since their comfort layers can be made up of just about anything. This makes them a versatile mattress type if you’re looking for something super specific. Generally, they provide a balanced feel. Some might be better at motion isolation or response than others, but it comes down to construction.
Latex
Finally, latex mattresses are a great addition to any adjustable base. Latex is a flexible material that is also very durable. You can adjust the mattress easily, but it will keep its shape for many years to come. This is why many of the beds on our list are latex mattresses or latex hybrids.
Latex mattresses make a great eco-friendly option because of their natural components. Latex provides a natural buoyancy to the mattress that makes it great for combination sleepers or sexually active folks. These beds can have some of the highest pricepoints though, depending on the latex’s sourcing and whether or not it’s organic.
Body Type and Sleeping Position
Most sleepers fare best on a medium-firm mattress, which falls at 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, because of its balance of softness and support. However, this can change depending on how much you weigh, as well as what positions you tend to sleep in.
“Sleepers under 230 pounds may want a firmer mattress to better support them,” says Dr. Raj Dasgupta. This is because these sleepers sink further into a bed than expected. They may find a mattress softer than others, or end up “bottoming out” on the super-firm support layer. Either way, it’s an uncomfortable way to sleep. A firmer mattress can help keep them elevated and aligned.
On the other hand, sleepers under 130 pounds may have issues with sinking into the bed because of their lighter frame. They may find beds firmer than advertised because of this fact. We recommend these sleepers choose softer beds that will allow them to feel the full effect of a bed’s soothing comfort layers
Finally, your sleeping position can also affect what firmness or mattress type you should be looking for. Here’s a general overview of what firmness levels we recommend for your sleep style:
Side sleepers: These sleepers need pressure relief around the shoulders and hips especially, so they might want a slightly softer bed that allows these areas to sink into the bed.
Back sleepers: This sleeper may feel most comfortable sleeping on the medium-firm bed we recommended. Just ensure that your bed offers a blend of pressure relief and support, which will keep your spine aligned and fill in the gap at your lower back.
Stomach sleepers: Firmer mattresses are best for stomach sleepers as a bed that’s too soft may allow their hips to sink in too far, which will interfere with spinal alignment and potentially cause back pain. Consider beds with coils or dense foam support layers.
Combination sleepers: Look for a mattress that has some bounce or response, as this will make it easier to move on the surface and switch between your preferred position. Firm foam beds, latex mattresses, or beds with springs may be your best bets.
Durability
A mattress on an adjustable base is going to see more action than your average joe, so it makes sense that you’ll want one that’s durably constructed. When it comes to finding a durable mattress, I always recommend first checking out the bed’s reviews both on and off the manufacturer’s site. If you can find testimonials from owners who’ve had the bed for a while, that’s a great place to start.
We always consider edge support a marker of durability. If a bed’s edges don’t sag when bearing weight, it’s a good sign that the rest of the mattress will hold its shape with repeated use. We rate edge support out of 5, so you can take that score as a possible preview of how likely a mattress is to sag.
Finally, take a look at the bed’s warranty. Most mattresses last around 10 years on average, so this is the standard warranty you’ll see. However, some brands will offer 15-year, 25-year, or even lifetime warranties. This speaks to confidence in the product and its longevity, as well as a fallback if you encounter any defects when using the product.
Budget
Finally, if you’re buying an adjustable base, you may want to cut costs when buying a mattress that’ll work for it. The average queen-size mattress costs around $1,000, so this can be a good starting point to ensure you’re getting a quality mattress. But it’s important to ensure that you’re getting a good deal before you opt for the cheapest option. Take a look at the bed’s construction for high-quality materials, reviews for customer opinions, and any extra policies or freebies offered by the manufacturer.
It can be frustrating to measure all of this without having the mattress in front of you, so I’ll always recommend taking full advantage of any sleep trial offered by the brand. Most brands will offer you a full refund so long as you initiate a return within this trial period. This means you can decide whether you’d pay the price for the product you received before committing.
If you’re still worried about your own judgment, you can rely on us to ensure you get the best value. All of our top picks should be well worth their money, and we have both budget and luxury options for just about every price point.
Best Adjustable Mattress FAQs
What type of mattress is best for an adjustable bed?
We find foam mattresses are some of the best for adjustable beds because of their malleable construction. If you want a mattress with coils, opt for a hybrid over a traditional innerspring, as individually wrapped coils will be able to bend without the higher likelihood of warping.
What is the best thickness of mattress for an adjustable bed?
A mattress for an adjustable bed should be anywhere from 10 to 14 inches thick. Anything thinner might not withstand the base’s maneuvers, while anything larger could struggle to conform effectively with the base.
Do I need a special mattress for my adjustable bed?
Oftentimes, you won’t need a special mattress for an adjustable base. Most modern bed-in-a-box mattresses are designed to work with adjustable bases. However, some thicker innerspring mattresses are not made for adjustable bases as they won’t properly conform to the frame. If you are unsure, read the manufacturer’s details to ensure it will pair with an adjustable base.
Are adjustable mattresses worth it?
An adjustable base and mattress cost more than a standard bed set, but they can be a boon to those who struggle with pain and circulation issues. An adjustable mattress and base can increase blood flow and ease pain on the joints and back.
