After Sosha began writing sleep-related content, she knew she wanted to learn more about this important (yet often elusive!) aspect of human health and well-being. She became a Certified Sleep Science Coach to better understand what goes into getting a good night’s rest—including one’s choice of mattress. Sosha now calls upon this training when she tests and writes about beds and sleep accessories.
Sharing the bed with another person has its perks, but also its downsides. For one, there’s limited space, and you and your partner might have different preferences in terms of feel. If they’re a rowdy sleeper and you’re a light one, you might struggle to find undisturbed sleep. Thankfully, there’s a solution to these myriad problems: a split king mattress.
A split king mattress is basically two twin XL mattresses placed side-by-side, creating the same surface area as your traditional king-size mattress. Two different mattresses mean enhanced customization, better motion isolation, and the option for a split adjustable base—so you and your partner can individually adjust the foot and head of your respective mattresses.
To find the best split king mattresses, we focused on models that are best-suited for co-sleepers and high performers overall, including in our adjustable base tests. Read on to find the best picks for your needs.
Clarity’s Clear Winner
According to our sleep experts and testers, the best split king mattress is the Nectar Premier Memory Foam because of its appeal for couples, compatibility with adjustable bed frames, and surprising edge support for an all-foam mattress. It also comes in at a reasonable price for a higher-end mattress.
Edge support means the perimeter of a mattress won’t sag or collapse when bearing weight. It’s a marker of durability and a plus for sleepers with mobility concerns. It also allows you to use the full surface area of your mattress without feeling like you’re going to slide off, which is made doubly important when two mattresses are in the equation, like in a split king. The last thing you want is to feel like you’re slipping in the center of your mattress.
We test edge support by sitting and lying on the edge of the mattress, and by using weight plates to simulate how much it would sink for different sleeper types. For this list, we aimed to include mattresses that earned at least a 4/5 for overall edge support. This should be beneficial for couples and reduce the risk of a cave-in at the middle of your split king.
Most people buying a split king sleep with their partner, so we especially considered performance factors that should appeal to couples. High scores in edge support, motion transfer, response, and cooling can all benefit co-sleepers.
Motion isolation is perhaps the most important, referring to how well a bed absorbs movement before it can travel to the other side of the mattress. The main test we use to determine a bed’s motion absorption is with another tester, where we’re both in the bed, getting a feel for how much movement travels.
Responsiveness can be a priority if you’re sexually active or a combination sleeper. It means that the surface of a mattress is easier to move around on, and you don’t feel “stuck” in the surface at any point. Sharing the bed can also cause things to literally heat up, so you might also want to invest in something with cooling capability.
We looked for mattresses that performed admirably in each or all of these categories to ensure they’ll be a good match for couples seeking a split king. We’d consider anything around or above a 4/5 to be an above-average score.
An adjustable base allows you to transform any mattress into a bona fide smart bed. These bases allow you to maneuver the head and foot of the bed into whatever position you prefer—including zero-gravity, anti-snore, or so that you can read a book or watch TV before bed. Studies show that adjustable beds can improve overall sleep quality and may also help relieve pain from certain conditions.
Split king mattresses are a popular choice for adjustable bases because they mean you can move one side of the mattress independently of the other. Someone can correct their snoring without wrenching their partner into a possibly uncomfortable position, for example.
Many mattresses are advertised as adjustable-base-compatible, but we put all of the ones we test on an adjustable base after they arrive in the studio to see how well they work. Some beds conform better to the base than others, but we sought to include only those that scored well in our adjustable base test. To complement this, we also included a list of our favorite adjustable bases for split king mattresses.
Our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches selected the best split king beds by looking for top performers in edge support, couples’ performance, and adjustable base compatibility.
However, our full process involves testing several aspects of a bed’s performance, including cooling, pressure relief, and more. We evaluate and score these factors using specialized technology and firsthand accounts of how a bed feels to testers with different body types.
Once we have all those scores, we calculate the bed’s overall score using a weighted formula. This overall score is a good indicator of a mattress’s general quality, and is always a number out of 5.
As we decide which mattresses to feature in any roundup, we only include beds with an overall score of 3.5 out of 5 or higher. Even if a mattress does certain things well, we won’t point you towards it if it falls below this baseline.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

The Nectar Premier mattress is a luxurious bed that offers lots of pressure relief. It’s softer than average, which makes it a nice option for many side sleepers. This mattress has cooling gel foam and a cover made with Phase Change Material, so it works well for hot sleepers. However, it may not be supportive enough for many back and stomach sleepers. And because it’s a high-end model, it could be out of some people’s budgets. To learn more, watch our video review.
The Nectar Premier Memory Foam is a higher-end all-foam mattress with everything you could want in a split king. It earned high scores for pressure relief (4.6), cooling (4.5), motion isolation (4.3), and edge support (4). All of these should appeal to couples, and the bed’s balanced medium feel should accommodate a variety of sleeper types. The split king model also retails for under $1,500, and you can even bundle it with Nectar’s Premier Adjustable Base to get the most bang for your buck.
The Nectar Premier came in at a 6/10 on our firmness scale, which is just a touch softer than your typical medium-firm. It has the traditional slow-moving feel of memory foam, providing plenty of sinkage and pressure relief for back and side sleepers.
Average-weight tester Melanie Kassel proclaimed this mattress was “made for side sleeping.” She said, “There’s a fair amount of sinkage but also enough of a supportive base to make this feel quite good.” Our heavyweight tester Matt Schickling agreed, but he also found comfort resting on his back. “I’ve been having some lower back pain lately, and I don’t feel any of that on this bed,” he said. “I’d recommend it for heavyweight sleepers—I also felt supported enough on my stomach.”
Most foam mattresses, especially those in the medium to soft range, tend to lack edge support, which can prove difficult for split king mattresses. However, the Nectar Premier pleasantly surprised us. Melanie, who performed the edge support tests, noticed a slight dip when she sat on the edge of the mattress.
Lying down, though, felt much more secure. “In every position, I was cradled without extra sinkage around the very edge of the bed,” she said. “With my eyes closed, I could tell I was somewhat close to the edge, but never felt like I was going to fall off.”
Because of the Nectar’s cushy feel, we also expected it to perform well in our motion isolation tests, which is a boon for couples looking for a split king mattress. I actually hopped into bed alongside Melanie so she could get a feel for how much motion the bed absorbed. “Overall, Livvi’s movements were very muffled, and I had a hard time noticing exactly when she rolled around,” she explained. “Light sleepers should be all set on this model.”
If you or your partner are looking for a particularly bouncy mattress, though, the Premier isn’t for you. As Melanie tried to move on the mattress’s surface, she encountered significant resistance. “This mattress does hold onto you, and it isn’t springy or responsive. But I think this is a fair tradeoff for how nice and contouring it feels, so it wasn’t unexpected,” she finished.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.
The Saatva is a hybrid mattress. This means it has both cushioning foam and supportive coil layers.
Firmness

Stomach Sleepers
It provides enough lift under the hips for stomach sleepers to maintain spinal alignment.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers should feel fully and evenly supported.
Back Pain
Built-in lumbar support features may help combat lower back pain.
Pros
It’s available in multiple firmness options (and two heights!).
The Luxury Firm model of the Saatva Classic will work well for most back sleepers, as its zoned support encourages spinal alignment.
Its high-density foam and dual coil units should ensure longevity and durability.
Cons
If you like the feel of a memory foam mattress, you’re not going to love the springiness of the Saatva.
This mattress also doesn’t offer much in the way of motion isolation, which could be a problem for light sleepers.

The Saatva Classic is a luxurious hybrid mattress that should be a great long-term investment. Its claim to fame is that it boasts two coil units instead of one, with a layer of shorter micro-coils above its classic innerspring unit. It’s available in multiple firmness options and two heights for lots of customizability.
We think its Luxury Firm model is one of the best mattresses for back sleepers, and two of our Certified Sleep Science Coaches actually own this bed. However, light sleepers with a rowdy partner and fans of memory foam should look elsewhere. Learn more in our video review.
When I think of luxury, I think of Saatva. Granted, I’m possibly biased, since the Saatva Classic is the mattress I sleep on every night. However, from the first night I slept on it, I would call my rest more than luxurious because of it. This bed features two coil layers and a plush pillow top for maximum support and comfort. It has some of the best edge support I’ve encountered in a mattress, earning a perfect score in our tests, which is ideal for making a split king feel like one bed. Otherwise, you might fall into the crack between the two mattresses that make up the set. You can also pair the Saatva Classic with the brand’s Adjustable Base Plus, also one of our favorites.
The Saatva Classic comes in multiple firmness options, including their mid-range Luxury Firm model, which we tested in the studio. I rated this mattress at a slightly firmer 7.5/10 on our firmness scale, though the pillow top still provides plenty of pressure relief. Physical therapist Dr. Hannah Habeeb thought that it “adds a lot of contouring,” especially at the hips and shoulders, for side sleepers. “I feel no pressure at my joints,” she explained.
Our testers echoed Dr. Habeeb’s sentiments. They found the Saatva Classic comfortable on their backs and sides, resulting in an overall pressure relief score of 4.5/5. Heavyweight tester Matt Schickling especially enjoyed the alignment he achieved on his back: “It feels like a stretch when you haven’t stretched in a while.”
I also stomach-sleep on the Saatva Classic without incident, and I find that the slight pressure relief of the pillow top allows for just the right amount of give around the chest. This means that every sleeper type should find comfort on this mattress.
The Saatva’s firmer feel extends to the mattress’s perimeter, yielding rock-solid edge support. You’ll be able to sit and lie down at the far reaches of the mattress without feeling like you’re slipping or sliding off. In a split king mattress, I expect that the space between each of the twin XL mattresses should feel quite stable, perhaps to the point of seamlessness.
Another thing I love about the Saatva is its responsiveness, a category in which the bed also earned a perfect rating. With two coil units, it’s unsurprising that this bed has so much bounce. As a combination sleeper, I can launch myself across the surface into any position I please without ever feeling stuck. This bounce should also be a plus for couples who are sexually active.
Where couples might encounter trouble is when it comes time to sleep—then the bounciness becomes a problem. If you’re a light sleeper, you’re going to feel essentially every movement on the Saatva Classic. The coils amplify motion more than the pillow top can stifle it, so if you or your partner are easily woken up, I wouldn’t recommend this mattress. Opt for a foam bed like the Nectar Premier instead.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a hybrid mattress—it has both cushioning foam and supportive coil layers.

Pros
This bed has a hotel-like feel. The pillow top provides a plush comfort layer to sink into.
The Helix Midnight Luxe sleeps very cool, and impressed us during our temperature testing.
Even though it’s a hybrid mattress, this bed has good motion isolation. That means if you co-sleep, you’re less likely to feel your partner’s movements.
Cons
Stomach sleepers probably won’t find this bed supportive enough to keep their spine in proper alignment.
This is a luxury mattress model, so it wouldn’t be considered a budget-buy.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a premium medium-firm mattress that offers a hotel-like feel for a relatively affordable price. Its zoned support and supportive coil layers make it a great option for back sleepers. The only element in which it scored below average was responsiveness, so if you like a super bouncy bed or you’re a restless combination sleeper, consider another model.
If you’re looking for a split king mattress to deal with pesky back pain, the Helix Midnight Luxe comes highly recommended by physical therapist Dr. Hannah Habeeb. This luxury hybrid offers plenty of pressure relief (earning a 4.2/5 score) and support in its medium-feel profile, the perfect combination for addressing pain and alignment. The bed also has top-notch edge support (the area where the mattress scored highest, at 4.8/5), making it a great pick for a split king mattress, plus admirable motion isolation (4/5) for couples.
Upon lying down on the Midnight Luxe, Dr. Habeeb immediately noticed the bed’s ability to align the spine properly. “The lumbar spine and pelvis feel neutral—it’s so supportive.” She further proclaimed that it was “just great for back pain” overall.
I tried out the Midnight Luxe myself, and I can more than see where Dr. Habeeb is coming from. This mattress has a medium feel —6/10 on our firmness scale—and quite a lot of contouring. When I lay on my back, I could feel the mattress filling in the gap at my lumbar area, keeping it comfortably propped up.
This sentiment was echoed by my fellow testers as they rested on their side. Heavyweight tester Caine Wilkes said, “The plush top feels really nice and comfortable, while the bottom layers are more supportive. Overall, I’m comfortable, and I usually sleep on my side. So, I would recommend this for side sleepers in my weight category.”
The Midnight Luxe is great for support and pain relief, but it’s also great for a split king mattress. When I tested this mattress, I was most surprised by the bed’s edge support. Usually, with a fluffy pillow top like the Midnight Luxe, I’d expect to see a lot of sinkage. I still felt supported as I sat and lay down on the perimeter of the mattress, so I don’t think it’ll be a problem in the center of a split king. However, I will note that the head and foot of the bed don’t seem to offer the same reinforcement, so steer clear if you’re planning to use them to tie your shoes, for example.
Hot sleepers with back pain should also appreciate the Luxe’s cooling capability. When I lay down on the bed, I actually felt cool and crisp around my neck and arms, where my skin directly touched the cover. As the bed contours to you and the further you sink in, you’ll feel cooler; and it takes a while for things to get hot—even then, it’s only temperature-neutral. I doubt hot sleepers will complain of overheating on this mattress, especially paired with some cooling sheets.
While the Helix Midnight Luxe’s doughy pillow top helped the bed absorb some motion, which I find helpful for couples, I was a bit let down as a combination sleeper. Trying to move around in this bed, I felt a bit trapped by the dense surface, especially when it came to rolling from my back to my side. Sexually active couples may want to opt for a bed with a firmer, springier surface, like the Aurora Luxe Cooling.

The DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress that offers great support for back sleeping and a carefully balanced mix of motion isolation and bounce. It’s definitely on the firmer side, so side sleepers may crave more cushion, but we think it’s a solid choice for couples, heavyweight sleepers, and shoppers on a budget.
Split king mattresses can be among the priciest, especially if you have to buy two twin XLs separately to achieve your desired combination. If you don’t want to break the bank but still want a quality mattress, look no further than the DreamCloud. This well-rounded hybrid mattress excelled in our response (5/5), edge support (4.4/5), and pressure relief (4.2/5) tests, earning at least a 4/5 in each performance category.
A split king DreamCloud costs just under $1,200, making it the most affordable on our list. To sweeten the deal, you can also bundle it with the DreamCloud Adjustable Base, which our testers highly recommend.
The DreamCloud hybrid came in slightly firmer at 7.5/10 on our scale, leading to a more “on top” feel, per our testers. Despite this, Dr. Habeeb noted that the mattress still had a relatively orthopedic feel. “It contours to your body without letting you sink in too much,” she explained.
This explains how the DreamCloud earned a 4.2/5 in our pressure relief tests. Both our lightweight and heavyweight testers favored back and side sleeping. “A lot of hybrids that are too foamy up top lose the support factor and you sink too much, but this has a good balance of comfort and support,” said heavyweight tester Matt Schickling. Riley Otis, our lightweight tester, added, “The alignment in both positions is great—I think if you’re a lightweight combination sleeper, this would be a really good option for you.”
Regardless of which sleeping position you prefer, switching between them will go down without a hitch on the DreamCloud. Our in-house tester noted this mattress had “great bounce and responsiveness” as she moved around on the surface of the bed. “It’s very easy to switch positions,” she explained. “I never felt stuck in the mattress.”
Combination sleepers won’t have to worry about rolling off the bed either, thanks to the bed’s sturdy edges—a plus for split king shoppers too. “The edge barely collapses when you’re sitting down,” our in-house tester explained. “Even when I was lying down and trying to change positions, I felt very supported.” If you’re worried about the gap at the center of your split king, it likely won’t be an issue if you have two DreamCloud twin XLs.
Some especially hot sleepers may have a problem with the DreamCloud. Our tester noticed that the mattress heated up the longer she lay on it, but never to the point of feeling overheated. “I think it was more so matching my body heat than actively cooling,” she explained.

The WinkBed Plus is the brand’s model designed specifically for sleepers who weigh more than 230 lbs. Its sturdy, supportive coils help prevent sagging and provide plenty of support for heavyweight back and stomach sleepers. All of this said, it’s likely too firm of a mattress for most side sleepers. Instead, check out the WinkBed. Learn more in our video review.
Sleepers over 230 pounds may often be let down by so-called supportive mattresses, but this isn’t the case with the WinkBed Plus. An upgraded version of the original WinkBed hybrid, this mattress features the same plush pillow top plus industrial-strength coils. It was a hit with our heavyweight tester, and as an average-weight sleeper myself, I found its firmer feel provided exceptional lift. Split king shoppers should appreciate the bed’s strong edge support (which earned 4.2/5), while couples will love the bed’s response for sex and motion isolation for undisturbed sleep.
I rated the WinkBed Plus at an 8/10 on our firmness scale, which is decidedly firm. But even as an average-weight sleeper, I didn’t find the mattress unyielding. You sink just enough into the pillow top to provide some pressure relief—something our heavyweight tester Matt Schickling greatly appreciated.
Matt thought the mattress felt “really good while side sleeping,” despite the aforementioned firmness. “My hips are quite aligned with my spine, and there’s no pressure to speak of in the shoulder or neck,” he explained. Switching to his back, he added, “Overall, I feel really well-supported, which is unique in a firm-feeling mattress. The bed curves very nicely to my lower back and definitely relieves pressure there.” Matt’s findings helped the WinkBed Plus earn an overall pressure relief rating of 4.3/5.
I’ve noticed that most hybrids designed for plus-size sleepers feature sturdy coils along the edges, and the WinkBed Plus is no exception. The only issues I had getting in and out of bed came from just how thick and lofty this mattress is. The topmost foams compress a bit when you sit down at the perimeter, but nothing that would cause concern. Lying down in each position also went over without incident, as regardless of which I took up, there was no danger of me sliding off—even when I had a leg over the edge.
Strong edge support means that couples should be able to spread out on this mattress and make the most of available space. The WinkBed Plus also offers plenty of motion isolation for these sleepers, too, thanks to the dense, doughy pillow top. I was surprised when my fellow tester hopped into bed alongside me; I expected the coils to amplify any motion. I could definitely feel some movement on the mattress, but it stayed consistent, even as my partner tried to move more aggressively. All in all, I think most light sleepers should be able to sleep through it.
The WinkBed Plus earned a 5/5 in our cooling test, which I had the pleasure of performing. I used a thermal gun to record the increase in surface temperature after I took a 7-minute nap on the mattress. The results came to a meager 3.7-degree increase, which is a sign of exceptional cooling and the reason for this score. However, I wouldn’t call the WinkBed Plus a true cooling mattress. There’s still some heat that gets trapped by the pillow top, but you won’t overheat.
If you’re a super-hot sleeper looking for something that’ll actively cool your body down, check out the Aurora Luxe Cooling. Otherwise, you can read more in our WinkBed Plus review.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is Bear’s most high-end mattress. It offers luxury features, like zoned support and extra height, while still offering the temperature regulation Bear mattresses are known for. Based on our testing results, we’d recommend this mattress to average-weight side and back sleepers, as well as hot sleepers. If you’re looking for a cheaper option, check out the Bear Star Hybrid. Hybrid mattresses are prized for their balanced feel of softness and support, thanks to their use of cushy comfort layers and sturdy coils. Both are present in the Bear Elite Hybrid, a luxury mattress geared toward providing restful, rejuvenating sleep for athletes. But you don’t have to be super active to appreciate the bed’s comfort.
This mattress has surprisingly sturdy edges (which earned a 4.6/5 in our edge support tests) a feature not typically seen in mattresses with a plush pillow top, making it a solid option for split king shoppers. Sexually active couples or combination sleepers who share the bed should also appreciate the Elite Hybrid’s perfect response score, which makes moving around on the bed seamless.
The Bear Elite Hybrid comes in three firmness options for your choosing; for a split king, this means each side of the bed can be a different firmness. We tested the mid-range option, the Medium. Dr. Habeeb thought this mattress was softer than expected and recommended it for side sleepers. “It conforms to your body really nicely,” she explained.
Our team, however, found it came in at a 6/10 on our firmness scale, which is a true medium feel. While Dr. Habeeb thought the mattress could be too soft for some back sleepers, it was actually the preferred position among our testers. Heavyweight sleeper Matt Schickling felt more pressure on his side than he did on his back. “I feel like my hips and shoulders are well-aligned,” he said. “If you’re a heavy back sleeper, I’d say this is a good pick.” Based on our testers’ findings, the Elite Hybrid earned an overall pressure relief score of 4/5.
Though the top of the mattress definitely felt soft, my colleague Cait Giddings thought the edges felt reinforced when she sat at the perimeter. Sitting down and getting in and out of bed went off without a hitch, so much so that Cait recommended it for older adults or those with mobility concerns. She added, “I felt like I could lie on the absolute farthest reaches of the bed without sliding or rolling out.”
Cait also awarded the Bear Elite Hybrid a perfect score in our response tests. “The soft pillow top gave me plenty of cushion, but I didn’t sink very far into it,” she explained. “It was a breeze to launch myself in and out of bed or roll around.” This spells good news for both combination sleepers and sexually active couples looking for seamless movement on the bed’s surface.
Though the Elite Hybrid primarily scored well, Cait encountered some mixed signals when it came time to the cooling test. She used a thermal gun to measure the increase in surface temperature after lying on the mattress for several minutes. Though she had no complaints, the machine recorded an increase of 12.6 degrees, more than twice what we see on average. “I didn’t feel the mattress heat up at all while I was lying there,” she said, “so I wouldn’t describe it as ‘sleeping hot’ despite the temperature gun results.”
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Hot sleepers wanting a split king mattress will find their match in the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling. This hybrid lives up to its name, providing cool sleep right at the bed’s surface; it scored an impressive 4.5/5 in our temperature regulation tests, but also stunned in responsiveness (5/5) and edge support (4.4/5). This firmer mattress should be a great pick for a robust split king mattress, especially for combination sleepers and couples seeking a great bed for sex.
The Aurora Luxe Cooling comes in multiple firmnesses, and we tested out the Medium model. Though it ended up feeling more like a 7.5/10 on our scale, which we’d call fairly firm. Dr. Habeeb praised this firmer feel for its support: “It maintains a nice, neutral spine and supports the lumbar spine and lower back—true for all the sleeping positions.”
Among our testers, opinions were mixed on which sleeping position felt best. Heavyweight tester Matt Schickling was surprised he enjoyed the bed on his side. “I feel pretty supported through the core, and more cradled than anything,” he explained. Average-weight tester Melanie Kassel, however, thought the bed was “much better” on her back: “It’s not overly plush, but there’s just enough cradling that it feels like there’s a hint of luxury.”
This firmer feel left our sleepers feeling more “on top” of the mattress rather than sinking in, which only helped out in the cooling tests, as less of your body heat seeps into the bed. Cait Giddings, who performed the thermal gun test, also noted that the cover of the bed felt “crisp” and cool to the point where it was almost “slippery.” After lying on the mattress for 7 minutes, the surface temperature increased by only 5.9 degrees. “The whole time, the mattress never felt like it was heating up,” she added.
Another pro of the Aurora Luxe’s firmness is that it extends all the way to the edges of the mattress. This means that sleepers should be able to spread out on their split king, but also comfortably cuddle in the center without slipping. “I was surprised by how solid and structured the edge of this bed felt,” Cait said. “I could sit and lie at the far edge of the bed without feeling like the edge dipped even an inch.”
The Aurora Luxe’s firmness isn’t for everyone, though. Some especially petite sleepers and folks with sensitive joints may need something a bit softer, so they can better sink into their mattress and achieve more pressure relief. If that sounds like you, you might want to opt for the Bear Elite Hybrid.

If you’re looking for a split king mattress specifically for the adjustable base benefits, we’ve found that latex mattresses are often ideal, and the Birch Luxe Natural is our pick for the best of the best. Latex’s naturally buoyant and squishy feel means that it molds well to an adjustable base—and your body, as we discovered in our pressure relief tests. The Birch Luxe also has great edge support for a latex mattress (scoring 4.7/5), meaning there shouldn’t be any gapping or caving in the center of the bed if you and your partner want to snuggle up.
The Birch Luxe Natural ended up at a 7/10 on our firmness scale, which is just a touch firmer than standard medium-firm. Dr. Habeeb still noted that she felt the mattress was “soft enough” for side sleepers, the position she most recommended for the Luxe. “I feel my body relaxing on my side, but I also feel supported,” she explained.
Our average-weight tester agreed with Dr. Habeeb’s sentiments, echoing, “I feel really great support on my side, and the pressure relief is doing a good job.” However, unlike Dr. Habeeb, she also found comfort on her back. “My spine feels fully aligned and supported,” she said. She did add that she would prefer a bit more contouring from her mattress, but it was nothing that would deter her from sleeping on the Luxe for a couple of nights.
Edge support is an important factor for both adjustable bases and split king mattresses, as you’ll want all the space you can get and for your mattress to maintain its shape as you maneuver it. Thankfully, the Birch Luxe performed admirably in this category. Our in-house tester was able to exaggerate her position lying on the edge of the mattress without slipping off. “And when I sat down, I noticed a bounce that helped assist me out of the bed,” she added, which could be beneficial for seniors.
Latex’s buoyancy means that we expect to see plenty of responsiveness in these mattresses. The Birch Luxe delivered on this front, too, earning a perfect score. “I feel like this mattress has great bounce,” our tester said as she moved around on its surface. “I don’t feel like the mattress is fighting me, so it’s really easy to switch positions.”
This bounciness does spell trouble for some couples, especially if one of you is a light sleeper. While it’s great for sex, it can amplify motion when you’re trying to get some shut-eye after the main event; this means you might feel your partner shifting throughout the night. Our testers definitely noticed this when they tried out the mattress together, especially when someone got in and out of bed. Fellow light sleepers, I’d steer you toward a mattress that performed better in this category, like the Nectar Premier.
If you didn’t find what you were looking for in the list above, you might find what you need in the other options below, which are some more highly rated and recommended mattresses.
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid – The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid offers sleepers the best of both comforting foam and supportive coils in its construction. The mattress is surrounded by high-density rails that keep it strong and retain its edge support, and it has a durable foundation of coils and thick foam. While this bed may offer a lot of motion isolation, the Saatva Classic won out over the Memory Foam Hybrid in terms of edge support, hence why we passed it over for our final list.
Titan Plus Core – The Titan Plus Core is a great mattress for heavy people. It’s on the firmer side, so it’s supportive enough for people who weigh 230 to 500 pounds. This firmness yields stronger edge support and more response, albeit trading off with less stellar motion isolation. Because this mattress is designed specifically for heavy sleepers, people who weigh less than 130 pounds will probably find it too firm. It also might pose a problem for side sleepers with hip or shoulder pain.
Birch – If the Birch Luxe is too expensive for your tastes, you might be satisfied with the OG Birch. This latex mattress is super bouncy with surprisingly decent motion isolation, and relatively secure-feeling edge support. However, it doesn’t offer the same amount of pressure relief as the Luxe Natural, so if you’re a side or back sleeper, you should opt for that model.
Our Top Three Split King Adjustable Bases
Looking to pair your split king mattress with a split king adjustable base? Here are some of our favorites, most of which we’ve even tested in their split-king variations.
The Nectar Premier Adjustable Base makes the adjustable bed experience feel smooth and seamless. This is one of the quietest bases we’ve tested, so there’s no whirring from the motors to keep you up at night as you try to get comfortable. Our testers were especially pleased with the range of adjustability they could achieve on this mattress, so you could likely fold yourself up into a mattress taco if you so desire (though I wouldn’t recommend it).
You can control the base via wireless remote or app for intuitive repositioning. Your options range from zero-gravity, anti-snore, reading, or memory positions in which you can save your favorites. Also, take advantage of the bed’s two massage levels and built-in charging for your phone.
The DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame brings all the features you’d want in an adjustable bed (massage, head and foot elevation, presets, etc.) at a reasonable price and with 2 months to try it out.
The DreamCloud Classic Adjustable Base can hold up to 850 pounds without breaking a sweat, which is why we awarded it the title of most supportive. In the studio, we placed a super-thick mattress on the surface, and our heavyweight tester used and maneuvered the bed comfortably and without incident.
This frame is a bit more simplistic, offering independent head and foot elevation, a zero-gravity and anti-snore preset, and removable legs. It’s great if you’re on a budget, and the perfect complement for the affordable DreamCloud mattress.
The Saatva Adjustable Base Plus should have you sleeping in the lap of luxury with features like head and foot elevation, massage settings, and under-bed lighting—as well as free white-glove delivery.
The Saatva Adjustable Base Plus has some of the most prolific features and add-ons we’ve seen, even by adjustable base standards. Our testers were impressed by the bed’s full-body massage, multiple preset positions, underhead lighting, removable legs, and USB charging. It’s everything you could want and more in a smart bed.
Split king users can purchase this frame in an “Upper Flex” version, which keeps the lower half of your mattresses on the same frame but allows you to move the top portions independently. It’s great for couples who don’t want too much space or sagging in the center, which can happen when you put two twin XL bases side by side.
What We Want to See in a Split King Mattress
We’ve touched on what goes into the best split king mattresses: solid edge support, high couples’ performance scores, and compatibility with adjustable bases. I’ll dive a bit deeper into how we test and evaluate each of these categories, and what’s different when we’re looking at a split-king specifically.
Edge Support
You might like to sit on the edge of your mattress to tie your shoes, or lie down at the very perimeter to make the most of limited space. Sometimes an unsteady edge can make it more difficult to feel secure in either position. That’s why we judge a mattress’s edge support, which is how much or little the edge of a bed sinks when bearing weight.
For split king mattresses, there are a lot more edges than your typical bed. There’s a greater likelihood of gapping at the center where the two twin beds meet, which can pose an issue for couples who like to snuggle as much as they prefer their space. Strong edge support can lessen the sinkage there, offering a more seamless sleep experience.
To test edge support, our testers sit and lie down at the very perimeter of the mattress. They will make note of how stable they feel in each, rating the sinkage as well as how easy it is to get in or out, as well as switch sleeping positions.
We also perform a weighted edge support test, in which we stack weight plates on the edge of the bed and use a tape measure to record the exact sinkage depth. We use different amounts of plates to represent each body type (lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight sleepers) to get a feel for how the mattress will work for each.
The final edge support featured in our reviews is an average of these subjective and objective results, rated out of 5. We’d consider solid edge support to score at least 4/5, with anything above 4.5 being exceptional.
Performance for Couples
Many split king shoppers share the bed with their partner, so it’s only natural that we consider the performance factors most relevant to co-sleepers. As we mentioned, edge support can be beneficial for spreading out and making the most of shared sleeping surfaces. But motion isolation is perhaps the top priority for couples, followed by responsiveness and cooling.
Motion isolation is essentially how much or little you feel your partner’s movements from the other side of the bed. The better the motion isolation in a mattress, the fewer disturbances you’ll feel. We test a bed’s motion isolation in two ways. First, we use a water glass, which is placed on one side of the bed while a tester moves around on the other. How much the water ripples or the glass wobbles is a manifestation of how much movement is felt on that side.
The next test is similar, but we swap the water for another tester. While one tester lies down blindfolded, the other tester moves around, switching positions, getting out of bed, etc. The blindfolded tester raises their hand whenever they feel movement. Each of these tests involves a rating out of 5, and we average the results of both to get a total overall motion isolation score.
Responsiveness is another important feature to consider, especially if you and your partner are sexually active. When you move around on some mattress, you may get stuck in its doughy layers, which makes things difficult. A responsive mattress won’t let you sink in too far, bouncing back into shape and enabling seamless movement. We test responsiveness by moving around on the surface of the bed, switching between each sleeping position, and rating our overall experience out of 5. I’d consider 3.5/5 to be just average responsiveness, so anything higher is a good sign.
Finally, sharing the bed with your partner means more body heat, which can pose a problem for hot sleepers. If this sounds like you, you might want to invest in a cooling mattress with specialized cooling features. We test these cooling features in our thermal gun test: we measure the mattress’s surface temperature before and after our tester takes a 7-minute nap. This increase, combined with our tester’s notes on their experience, makes up the overall cooling score.
Adjustable Base Compatibility
Adjustable bases can upgrade any sleep experience. They allow you to adjust the elevation of your head and feet as you like, as well as into pre-set positions. Zero gravity, for one, helps to take pressure off the joints and give a “weightless” feel. Anti-snoring and TV-watching are also common presets. Some bases even come with added features like massage, underhead lighting, or built-in USB charging.
Split king adjustable bases vs. a queen adjustable base
Split king adjustable bases, like the mattress counterpart, are made up of two twin-XL-sized adjustable bases. This means that you can move each side of the mattress without affecting the other—a possible downside of regular adjustable king-size beds. You and your partner can be at completely different angles, further reducing the risk of disturbances throughout the night.
Many mattress brands advertise their beds as compatible with adjustable bases, often offering bundles with bases from the same manufacturer. To verify these claims, we test every mattress on an adjustable base in our studio. You’d be surprised to learn that some beds conform better than others. (Typically, we find that memory foam and latex mattresses mold better to a base than those with coils.) Our testers rate adjustable base compatibility out of 5, noting where they see any gapping or sliding.
If you’re considering adding an adjustable base to your new split king mattress, we’ve also listed some of our recommendations above to help you on your journey to upgraded sleep.
What Else Is Important When Buying a Split King Mattress?
A lot more than couples’ performance and adjustable bases go into a split king mattress. If you’re still having trouble deciding on a new mattress, here are some other areas to factor into your final decision.
Type of Mattress
There are four main mattress types we often review, and they each offer their own pros and cons in terms of performance, durability, and even price. This can make them appealing to certain sleeper types over others, which can help narrow the field on the best split king mattress for your needs.
Foam
Foam mattresses are made up entirely of different layers of foam, whether memory foam or otherwise. Usually, these beds offer a slow-moving feel with plenty of sinkage, making them top picks for pressure relief. Of course, this can vary depending on their firmness, as we’ve encountered some foam mattresses that are pretty firm and responsive.
These are great beds if you’re on a budget, but we’ll note they’re not always the most durable. If they’re on the softer side, they may not offer the same edge support as a bed with coils. Traditional memory foam can also trap heat more easily, so look for a model that features a cooling cover or open-celled construction for better airflow throughout.
Innerspring
Innerspring mattresses are one of the most traditional types—probably the one you or your parents slept on as a child. They’re made up primarily of a coil layer, plus a thin comfort layer on top. This yields a bouncy, supportive sleep surface that’ll have you feeling “on top” of your mattress. While great for edge support and ease of movement, they don’t offer much in the way of pressure relief because of those thin comfort layers.
Hybrid
A hybrid mattress combines all the bounce and support of an innerspring mattress with thicker comfort layers. These can be made of foam, latex, or other cushioning materials for a nice balance of pressure relief, alongside the lift from the coil unit. Hybrid mattresses can vary in terms of performance thanks to their myriad differences in construction, but they’re generally strong performers in response and edge support. They’re also some of the most expensive options out there, which can deter folks shopping on a budget.
Latex
Latex isn’t just for gloves—like rubber, this natural material offers plenty of bounce, but in a mattress, it can also provide some top-notch pressure relief. Latex mattresses have a uniquely buoyant feel, and they’re popular picks for the eco-conscious shoppers seeking a sustainable model. They can also work great for foam fans who need that pressure relief but hate the at-times stuffiness of memory foam.
However, their mega-bounce can spell trouble for couples wanting motion isolation. Plus, a bed made with organic or natural latex can cost a pretty penny.
Sleeping Position
Split king mattresses are great options for partners who have different sleeping preferences because they allow each person to choose the bed that suits their needs. We generally recommend medium-firm mattresses for their versatility and their purported benefits for spinal alignment, which can reduce back pain. However, as our chief medical advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta says, “Your sleeping position can have an effect on your ideal mattress firmness, so it’s important to take it into account when choosing the right mattress for your needs.”
Let’s go over what each sleeping position needs, so you can get the best mattress for your preferences, without the need to compromise with your partner.
Side Sleepers
When lying on your side, your shoulders and hips will sink further into the mattress than the rest of your body. In order to maintain being comfortable and aligned, you’ll need pressure relief around these areas. For some folks, achieving this may call for a softer mattress than your typical medium-firm recommendation.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers are typically the easiest to please. These folks need a balance of softness and support—just what a medium-firm bed provides. Ensure that you have enough contouring around the lower back, as a gap at the lumbar spine can also cause pain in this area.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleeping requires a more supportive sleep surface to keep your hips from falling out of alignment. Ideally, you’ll want to feel more “on top” of your mattress, rather than sink in too far. Some stomach sleepers might therefore feel best on a firm or even extra-firm mattress.
Combination Sleepers
If you switch between any of the above sleeping positions (or all three), you’re a combination sleeper. A more responsive or bouncy mattress may be better suited to these sleepers as it allows for more seamless movement as you toggle between your preferred positions. The last thing you want is to end up feeling “stuck” in your mattress as you try to roll from your side to your stomach.
Body Type
“Like your preferred sleeping position, how much you weigh can also influence how firm or soft your mattress feels,” says Dr. Dasgupta. This is why we try to get testers representing each weight class to test out our mattresses. For reference, we categorize light sleepers as those weighing less than 130 pounds, and heavyweight sleepers as folks weighing more than 230 pounds.
If you’re on the lighter side, you may actually find that mattresses feel firmer than expected. This is because you might have trouble sinking into the bed’s comfort layers and activating all that plush, pressure-relieving goodness. In this case, we recommend that these sleepers opt for a mattress on the softer side.
Sleepers over 230 pounds can encounter the opposite problem: sinking too far into a mattress. This means they might find the bed too soft or “bottom out” on the support layers, completely bypassing the benefits of the comfort layers. That’s why we recommend firmer, more supportive mattresses to prevent this issue. This may be opting for a bed with coils, or one specifically designed for plus-size sleepers, of which there are plenty.
Company Policies
Buying a mattress can come with a lot of freebies like shipping perks, easy setup, sleep trials, and warranties that often go overlooked. This can sweeten the deal and add overall value to your purchase of a new split king mattress. We evaluate each of these in our customer service score.
Mattress shopping online cuts out a lot of the woes with traditional in-store browsing and deal-signing. Many beds are now delivered (usually with free shipping) to your door compressed in a box, which can eliminate the hassle of having to lug an oversized rectangle throughout your house. For some folks, the easy setup is great. Other folks might dislike waiting hours for their bed to unfurl or the possible off-gassing that comes with bed-in-a-box mattresses. That’s why many other brands (like Saatva, for example) offer free white glove delivery. A team will come to your house and set up your new mattress, oftentimes hauling away your old one.
But some folks might be wary of buying a mattress they’ve never touched or even laid eyes upon. That’s where sleep trials come in. These are typically offered with online mattresses as a way to try the bed before committing to your purchase. Brands will give you anywhere from weeks to a full year to make a decision. In our tests, we give a full year-long trial a 5/5 rating. So long as you initiate a return within the trial period, you’ll usually receive a full refund—though some may charge a shipping or removal fee.
If you do decide to purchase a new mattress, don’t skip over the fine print, especially when it comes to the warranty. A warranty doesn’t just protect your mattress from defects, it can act as a preview of how long your bed will last. We see the length of a warranty as the manufacturer’s confidence in the product’s longevity. A typical high-quality mattress will last around 10 years, so that’s the most common warranty length you see. But some brands will offer 15-year, 25-year, or even lifetime warranties (which score 5/5 in our customer service evaluation)—so you can therefore expect your bed to last quite a long time.
Best Split King Mattress FAQs
Who makes the best split king mattress?
Our pick for the best split king mattress is the Nectar Premier Memory Foam, but what’s best for you will depend on your own needs and preferences. In general, look for beds with good edge support, appealing features for couples, and adjustable-base compatibility, as needed.
Is a split king mattress worth it?
If you’re dealing with poor motion isolation, trouble compromising on firmness with your partner, or are looking for an upgrade with an adjustable base, a split king may be worth it. A split king allows you to have two separate mattresses with different feels; so long as they’re twin XLs, you could even have two completely different mattresses. Adding an adjustable base also means you can move the head and foot of the mattress on each side. It’s a great investment for couples with widely different preferences who still want to sleep side-by-side.
What are the disadvantages of a split king adjustable bed?
A split king adjustable bed is a great investment, but also an expensive one. If you don’t plan on using the adjustable features as much, it may not be worth the extra hassle. You might notice the gap between your two beds more, especially if the halves of the split king base aren’t flush together.
Is a split king 2 twins or 2 twin XL?
A split king mattress is equivalent to two twin XL mattresses, not two twins. The dimensions of a split king are the same as a traditional king: 76 inches by 80 inches.
