How We Chose Our Products

Our team of sleep specialists have reviewed more than 600 mattresses, using proprietary analysis and hands-on testing to establish easy-to-understand scores. In addition to an overall score, we measure subscores for support, edge support, cooling, motion transfer, durability, trial period, and warranty. You can read more about our testing methods at the bottom of this roundup.

Hands-on mattress testing in our sleep lab

For our roundup of the best mattresses made in the USA, we obviously had to start with mattresses manufactured in the United States. This automatically cut out a lot of the competition. Then, to ensure the highest quality, we only picked mattresses that had an overall score of at least 3.9 out of 5 or higher.

Pros
Has a bouncy and responsive feel
Offers ample lumbar support
Available in four firmness levels
Cons
Lacks a slow-moving feel

Our Expert’s Take

We think the WinkBed is one of the best mattresses out there because of its innerspring construction. Its support layer of innerspring coils is zoned, meaning the springs are softer in certain parts of the bed and firmer in others. This allows the WinkBed to cushion sensitive areas while keeping the spine in a neutral alignment. The zoned construction also makes the bed excellent for sleepers with back pain.

Overall, this is a firm bed with a lot of responsiveness, making it easy for combination sleepers to switch positions. There are also three firmness levels available: Softer (a nice fit for some side sleepers), Luxury Firm (the best fit for back sleepers), and Firmer (ideal for stomach sleepers). You can even get the WinkBed Plus, which is designed for sleepers over 230 lb.

What the testers say: “I can really tell the WinkBed mattress has a zoned support system. When I rest on my back, I feel the supportive coils in the center supporting my lower back. When I rest on my side, I can feel the plush comfort layers cushion my shoulders and hips. If you deal with back pain, this is a really great option because it helps you maintain the proper spinal alignment” — Marten, reviewer

What We Love About the WinkBed

  • The zoned support system helps sleepers maintain the correct posture, which can help alleviate back pain.
  • It has a hotel-like quality, thanks to its tufted pillow top and supportive coil layer.
  • It’s available in four firmness levels: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus. This means that a variety of people can find a mattress that will work for them.

What to Keep in Mind About the WinkBed

WinkBed US Credentials

  • Each mattress is handmade to order.
  • The beds themselves are made by skilled mattress-makers in the United States.
  • WinkBeds’ factories are based in Wisconsin, Virginia, and Arizona.

Pros
Offers a nice balance of comfort and support
Good for most back and side sleepers
Doesn’t trap body heat
Cons
Not supportive enough for stomach sleepers
Not firm enough for heavier people
Lacks a slow-moving memory foam feel

Our Expert’s Take

Helix became a fast-rising star in the bed-in-a-box industry for its customization. When going to the company website, customers can take a sleep quiz that allows them to select their desired firmness. But they can also opt for an already-existing bed such as the Helix Midnight. One of Helix’s renowned hybrid mattresses, the Midnight has a support layer of individually wrapped coils, topped by multiple layers of foam, including a layer of Memory Plus foam (Helix’s take on memory foam) for added pressure relief.

This gives the mattress a medium-firm feel that should be comfortable for back sleepers and side sleepers alike. We also found the Helix Midnight to be a good fit for anyone who struggles with back pain.

What the testers say: “The Helix Midnight mattress is a great option for many different people. I really like its balanced foam feel and cooling features. But because I’m a heavier person who is 6′ 7,” I didn’t get enough support whenever I rested on my stomach. If you also fall in this category, you might want to consider the Helix Plus mattress instead.” Marten, reviewer

What We Love About the Helix Midnight

  • It has a balanced foam feel, thanks to its coil support layer and plush foam comfort layer. It’s easy to move around on top of this bed, and it offers plenty of pressure relief.
  • Thanks to its medium-firm feel, it works well for many back and side sleepers.
  • The coils help promote airflow, which prevents the mattress from trapping body heat.

What to Keep in Mind About the Helix Midnight

  • Stomach sleepers might feel their hips sinking out of alignment, which can cause lower back pain.
  • It isn’t supportive enough for people who weigh more than 230 lb. People in this category might “bottom out” on this bed.

Helix US Credentials

  • All Helix mattresses are hand-assembled and custom-built at one of the brand’s factories throughout the United States.
  • Because they’re manufactured in the USA, Helix mattresses usually arrive at your doorstep in six to 10 business days.
  • The brand is headquartered in New York City.

Other User Reviews

On the Helix website, the Midnight mattress has an average customer review score of 4.5/5 stars. Many people said it felt great while side sleeping, and others said it slept very cool at night. Some people left one-star reviews, saying the mattress felt too soft and started to sag as time went on.

Pros
A great value

Great for side sleepers
Cons
Not supportive enough for stomach sleepers
Lacks a bouncy feel

Our Expert’s Take

One of the (literal) selling points of a mattress made in the USA is that the company is often able to sell it at a more affordable price to customers. Take the Bear, which you can often find under $1,000 after discounts. Bear is an intriguing company in that many of their mattresses are designed for athletes. The all-foam Original mattress, for instance, has a cover made of Celliant — a material believed by some to assist with blood flow and muscle recovery.

Athletic bonafides aside, the Bear is a medium-firm mattress that should be comfortable for back sleepers and side sleepers — two sleeping positions that each need a blend of comfort and support. The bed should provide pressure relief with its comfort layers, while lifting up the sleeper with the denser foam in the support layer. The top layer of memory foam also has an infusion of graphite to help you sleep cool.

What the testers say: I really love the medium-firm feel. As a back and side sleeper, the Bear Original mattress helps me feel comfy and supported all night long. It’s not supportive enough for stomach sleepers, though.” — Elisa, Reviewer

What We Love About the Bear Original

  • It has a classic medium-firm feel, which is great for most back and side sleepers.
  • It’s sold at a great price, especially after you factor in discounts. It should last between seven and 10 years.
  • Thanks to its breathable cover, this mattress sleeps cool.

What to Keep in Mind About the Bear Original

  • Because it’s an all-foam bed, it lacks a bouncy and responsive feel. It could be difficult for some people to move around on top of this bed.
  • It’s not firm enough for stomach sleepers. In this sleeping position, you could feel your hips sinking out of alignment.

Bear US Credentials

  • All of Bear’s mattresses are made to order and manufactured right here in the United States.
  • The company is headquartered in New York City.
  • Because Bear’s factories are domestic, the company is able to oversee them and make sure they’re free of hazardous emissions.

Other User Reviews

Out of over 10,000 customer reviews on the Bear website, this mattress earned an overall score of 4.5/5. Many people said that, after they broke in the mattress, it helped alleviate joint pain. However, some people left one star reviews, saying the mattress felt too soft.

Pros
Has a medium-firm feel
Offers plenty of pressure relief for side sleepers
Contains cooling infusions
Cons
Doesn’t have the best edge support
Lacks a traditional memory foam feel

Our Expert’s Take

Side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress that offers pressure relief at the shoulders and hips — a mattress like the Nolah Evolution. It has two different comfort layers that offer plenty of contouring. The first is a 2” layer of proprietary AirFoamICE, a material that’s similar to memory foam, but more breathable. Beneath that is a layer of denser high-resilience foam.

The bottom of the mattress has a layer of EcoSupport coils to ensure that side sleepers don’t sink too far into the mattress. They should still feel lifted while getting pressure relief. Finally, we think the Nolah Evolution is an incredibly cooling mattress because of its airflow-promoting coils, AirFoamICE layer, and a gusset that allows hot air to escape. The bed comes in three different firmness levels, but we recommend that side sleepers opt for the Luxury Firm.

What the testers say: “As a side sleeper, I really enjoyed the Nolah Evolution mattress. It has a plush comfort layer that cushions my shoulders and hips, and it doesn’t have that “quicksand” feeling that many foam mattresses do.” — Elisa, reviewer

What We Love About the Nolah Evolution

  • Both the Plush and Luxury Firm models work well for side sleepers, because the comfort layers offer plenty of pressure relief.
  • It sleeps cool at night, thanks to the graphite-infused foam layers and airflow-promoting coils.
  • It isolates motion well, which is good news for couples. This means you shouldn’t feel your partner’s movements on your side of the bed.

What to Keep in Mind About the Nolah Evolution

  • Even though it contains layers of plush foam, it doesn’t have a traditional all-foam feel. If you prefer a “quicksand” sort of quality, take a look at the Puffy Cloud.
  • It doesn’t have the best edge support. If you side or rest near the side of the bed, you may feel it sag.

Nolah US Credentials

  • The brand has eight factories across the United States.
  • Every last mattress is made in the US.
  • The individual materials of the mattress (springs, foam, etc.) are also made in the USA.

Other User Reviews

On the Nolah website, the Evolution Hybrid mattress has a score of 4.9/5. Many side sleepers said it helped alleviate joint pain. Nolah doesn’t publish negative reviews, so I am unable to shed light on any customer complaints.

Pros
Very durable
Available in three firmness levels
Free white glove delivery
Cons
Lacks a slow-moving memory foam feel
Could be too pricey for some people

Our Expert’s Take

The Saatva is known for its traditional innerspring feel, thanks to its coil-on-coil construction. The first layer contains coils of different firmnesses, allowing the springs to contour the body and provide pressure relief. The second layer is more supportive, creating a sturdy foundation at the bottom of the mattress. This results in a bed that’s springy, responsive, and — because of all the room for airflow between the coils — cooling. To give the sleeper some pressure relief, there’s also a Euro pillow-top at the top of the mattress that’s quilted with soft foam.

You can get the Saatva in three different firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. We think side sleepers will be most comfortable on the Soft, back sleepers will be most comfortable on the Luxury Firm, and stomach sleepers (and some back sleepers) will be most comfortable on the Firm.

What the testers say: “As a taller and heavier person, I really enjoyed the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm mattress. It offered plenty of lumbar support when I slept on my back, and I got some nice pressure relief from its tufted pillow top while side sleeping.” Marten, Reviewer

What We Love About the Saatva

  • It’s never compressed into a cardboard box, and it comes with free white glove delivery. This means you can sleep on your mattress right away–no need to wait for it to off-gas and expand.
  • It has a tufted pillow top made with organic cotton. This addition gives it a luxurious, hotel-like quality.
  • Thanks to the coils in its support layer, this mattress promotes airflow and doesn’t trap body heat.

What to Keep in Mind About the Saatva

  • It lacks a slow-moving memory foam feel. If you want to gently “sink” into your mattress, you may want to consider getting the Puffy Cloud.
  • It could be out of some people’s price ranges. At regular price, a queen-size Saatva mattress costs about $2,000.

Saatva’s US Credentials

  • Each mattress is domestically handcrafted.
  • Saatva has 19 factories and 145 fulfillment factories across the United States.
  • Most of the brand’s mattresses travel less than 100 miles from the factory to customers’ doorsteps.

Other User Reviews

On the Saatva website, the classic mattress has an average customer review score of 4.8/5. People rave about the bed’s supportive feel and excellent customer service terms. Some people left one-star reviews and didn’t like the firmness of the bed they chose.

Pros
Solid edge support
Bear furnishes the Elite Hybrid in multiple firmness levels (Soft, Medium and Firm)
Covered by a lifetime warranty
Cons
Received middling motion transfer scores in the sleep lab
May feel too bouncy for some
Luxury mattress means a luxury price point

Our Expert’s Take

While we may more closely associate the manufacturing of luxury goods with countries like Italy, Switzerland, and Japan, the U.S. has plenty of luxury goods to its name, mattresses among them. And if you want the creme de la creme, you can’t go wrong with the Bear Elite Hybrid. The Hybrid aced several tests in the mattress lab, boasting standout scores of 4.5 out of 5 in edge support, cooling, and durability. Those scores are also excellent indicators of a bed with a luxury hotel feel — a vibe that we can personally attest to.

The luxury starts at the top with the bed’s plush, hand-quilted cover infused with phase change materials for temperature regulation. The comfort layers feature copper-infused memory foam, known for its cooling and antimicrobial properties, and zoned comfort foam intentionally punctured to enhance airflow. Pocketed spring coils add responsiveness, and a perimeter of additional coils reinforces the edge.

What the testers say: “The Bear Elite Hybrid is marketed to athletes, and the same features that make it a great fit for active people also make the bed one of the top luxury mattresses. The Luxury Firm model that we tested exudes comfort and offers excellent support.” — Elisa, reviewer

What We Love About the Bear Elite Hybrid

  • The dual coil construction creates an exceptionally well-built perimeter, so if you tend to sleep on the edge of your bed, you’ll feel secure.
  • The brand furnishes the bed in multiple firmness options, so you can get all the cooling and luxury features of the Bear Elite Hybrid in whichever firmness suits you best. This is especially helpful for getting the right support based on your sleep position since side sleepers tend to prefer a soft mattress, while stomach sleepers need firmer support under the hips.
  • It’s backed by a 120-night sleep trial period and an impressive lifetime warranty.

What to Keep in Mind About the Bear Elite Hybrid

  • This mattress doesn’t have great motion isolation, so if you tend to be easily awoken by the movements of a partner, you may want to try a bed that better isolates motion, like the Nolah Evolution.
  • Unlike the Bear Original, our pick for the Best Affordable bed that’s made in the U.S., the Bear Elite Hybrid has a high-end build with a higher price tag to boot.

Bear US Credentials

  • All Bear mattresses are made in the brand’s Arizona facility, the Arizona Dream Factory. It’s unclear where the materials are sourced, however, they are Greenguard Gold, CertiPUR-US, and fiberglass-free certified.
  • Bear oversees the Arizona factory operations from its headquarters in New York City.

Pros
Made with organic materials
Naturally cooling and breathable
Very durable
Cons
Could be too pricey for some people
May not offer enough pressure relief for side sleepers

Our Expert’s Take

Consumers often seek the durability of an American-made product, and the Titan Plus mattress is an excellent example of a bed with a robust build to support folks with heavier frames for years to come. The bed boasts a polyester cover with 1” of gel memory foam quilting for cooling and initial comfort, ensuring durability without sagging. An optional GlacioTex cooling cover is available for an extra cool feel. Its main comfort layer consists of a 2” patented TitanFlex foam, offering responsive contouring and pressure relief.

What really adds robust support and durability though is the bed’s 8” layer of TitanCore coils, which sit on a high-density foam base. The bed’s cooling features helped it earn 4.5 out of 5 for cooling from mattress testers, and a 4.5 out of 5 for overall support.

What the testers say: “At 6’7” and 270 lbs, I’m someone who can really test the mettle of the Titan Plus. And the bed is indeed one of the most supportive I’ve ever tested in the sleep lab. The only problem that can present is that the bed may feel overly firm to those who weight less. But for me, I love the firm support I feel on this bed.”— Marten, Reviewer

What We Love About the Titan Plus Mattress

  • The price is excellent for such a supportive bed, as beds for heavier people tend to come with a weightier price tag. At $1,250 for a queen, the Titan defies that convention.
  • Firm mattress lovers will find a bed that meets their expectations. Many beds that claim to be firm will still feel too soft, especially to heavier sleepers.
  • It’s particularly durable. We expect it to last at least a decade.

What to Keep in Mind About the Titan Plus Mattress

  • Side sleepers might feel too much pressure on their shoulders and hips. We’d suggest the Titan Plus Luxe, which is also for heavier sleepers, but with pressure relief side sleepers more in mind.
  • Soft mattress lovers should also consider the Titan Plus Luxe, which offers adequate support but a less firm feel.

Brooklyn Bedding US Credentials

  • Titan Plus is under the Brooklyn Bedding umbrella, whose mattresses are manufactured in Arizona.
  • In fact, while many of our featured brands in this roundup outsource their manufacturing to US-based factories, the Brooklyn Bedding brand is totally vertically integrated — i.e., the brand owns its US-based manufacturing plant.
  • Vertical integration allows added savings to be passed on to consumers.

Other User Reviews

At publication time, the Titan Plus had garnered 4.7 out of 5 stars among 2,666 reviews. Customers said the bed is an excellent price for the value, given how pricey mattresses for heavier body types tend to run. Some reviewers cautioned that the bed may feel too firm for some.

Pros
Plenty of support for back sleepers
Has a plush, pillow top cover
High-end cooling capabilities
Cons
Lacks a slow-moving memory foam feel
May not be supportive enough for heavier folks

Our Expert’s Take

Although the hybrid Leesa Sapira Chill is bouncy and responsive, it also has a delightfully plush pillow top. This blend of comfort and support is a match made in heaven for back sleepers, who should get a lift from the pocketed coils while snuggling into the bed’s cozy, gel-infused foam comfort layers.

Layers of breathable foam and adaptable memory foam relieve pressure without letting you sink in too deep, for those who like a more responsive feel. The main support layer features individually-wrapped coils, zoned for firmer support where needed, promoting airflow and alignment. And since the mattress has very little motion transfer and decent edge support (both scored 4 out of 5 in the sleep lab), it should accommodate couples rather nicely, too.

What the testers say: “The Leesa Sapira Chill is one of the priciest from the brand, but it’s a worthy investment. This mattress offers plenty of lumbar support when lying on your back, all while providing that plush pillow top that so many sleepers love.” — Marten, Reviewer

What We Love About the Leesa Sapira Chill

  • Its plush top makes you feel like you’re sleeping on a million bucks (figuratively, of course). If you like to gently “sink” into your mattress while still feeling lots of lift under the hips, this is a great option.
  • It offers plenty of lumbar support for back sleepers, while still cushioning pressure points.
  • The foam layers are infused with gel, which helps pull heat away from the body.

What to Keep in Mind About the Leesa Sapira Chill

  • If you want a bouncier, more responsive mattress with a more traditional innerspring feel, you may want to consider getting our top overall pick, the WinkBed, instead.
  • Even though it’s firmer than average, it’s not supportive enough for people who weigh more than 230 lb, in which case, the WinkBed Plus would be a good alternative.

Leesa US Credentials

  • Most Leesa products, including all of its beds, are made in the USA.
  • Sheets, mattress protectors, pillows (minus the Premium Foam Pillow), duvet cover, and weighted blanket are made in China, and the Duvet Comforter is made in Bahrain.

Other User Reviews

Released in the fall of 2023, the Sapira Chill had only garnered 23 reviews thus far among the 25,000+ for the Leesa brand when we checked. One five-star reviewer wrote the following: “My wife sleeps on her side, I sleep on my back, and we both heat up easily. We both sleep so well. It’s so so so comfortable. Easily worth the price.” Lower reviews cited issues getting comfortable on the unique-feeling bed, and customer service issues.

Pros
Affordable
Available in many firmness levels
Coils promote airflow
Cons
Lacks many luxury features
Not supportive enough for people over 230 lb

Our Expert’s Take

The Signature Hybrid is one of the most popular mattress models from Brooklyn Bedding, known for its affordability, multiple firmness levels, and cooling. Its comfort layer has been infused with gel to promote cooling, plus the bottom layer of 8” Ascension Coils leave lots of room for airflow. Sleepers should have no problem staying cool.

We tested the Medium model of the Signature Hybrid, and found it to be a fantastic fit for back sleepers and combination sleepers. Its medium firmness has an optimal blend of comfort and support, and it makes it easy to switch sleeping positions at night. There’s also a Soft model that should be comfortable for side sleepers and a Firm model that might be good for stomach sleepers and heavy sleepers over 230 lb, although we haven’t personally tested it.

What the tester say: “For the price, you can’t beat the Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress. Sure, it lacks some bells and whistles, but it offers a nice balance of comfort and support and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. But if you’re a heavier person, like me, you may want to find a more supportive mattress.” Marten, reviewer

What We Love About the Brooklyn Bedding Signature

  • Because Brooklyn Bedding owns their own factory, the company is able to slash prices.
  • The coils promote airflow and prevent sleepers from overheating at night.
  • It’s available in three firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm.

What to Keep in Mind About the Brooklyn Bedding Signature

  • It lacks some luxurious features. If you want a high-end bed, consider getting the Saatva instead.
  • It’s not supportive enough for people who weigh more than 230 lb. If you fall in this category, you may want to consider getting one of the best mattresses for heavy people.

Brooklyn Bedding US Credentials

  • The company owns its own factory in Arizona, where all of its mattresses are manufactured.
  • Because they oversee their own manufacturing process, Brooklyn Bedding is able to pass savings onto customers.
  • At the factory, each mattress cover is hand-stitched for a clean construction and interior.

Other User Reviews

Customers gave this mattress an average score of 4.7/5, according to the Brooklyn Bedding website. Many people said they loved the RV-size mattress, and others praised the customer service team. Some people left one-star reviews, saying the mattress started to sag as time went on.

Pros
Has a balanced memory foam feel
Offers plenty of lumbar support for back sleepers
Doesn’t trap body heat
Cons
Not supportive enough for stomach sleepers
Lacks a bouncy, responsive feel

Our Expert’s Take

As far as memory foam mattresses go, Leesa is unique in that it has a balanced foam feel — not too soft and not too firm. The bed’s top comfort layer of proprietary LSA200 foam is responsive and bouncy, while the layer below it is more akin to the slow-moving feel of traditional memory foam. Together, they create an excellent blend of comfort and support that should appeal to back sleepers and side sleepers.

Another bonus of the LSA200 foam is that it’s more breathable than traditional memory foam. This makes the Leesa fairly cooling compared to other all-foam mattresses, and should be a good option for hot sleepers.

What the testers say: “The Leesa mattress has a classic medium-firm feel, which helped me feel supported and comfy while side sleeping. As a heavier person, I needed more lumbar support when I rested on my back. That said, this should work well for average weight and lightweight back sleepers.” — Marten, reviewer

What We Love About the Leesa

  • It has a balance foam feel. You’ll feel plenty of pressure relief, but you won’t feel “stuck” inside this mattress.
  • The medium-firm feel works well for most back and side sleepers.
  • It has a breathable cover and a layer of aerated foam, which helps sleepers stay cool at night.

What to Keep in Mind About the Leesa

  • Because it doesn’t contain coils, it lacks a bouncy feel. If you want a more responsive mattress, you may want to consider the Saatva.
  • It’s not supportive enough for stomach sleepers. In this sleeping position, you might develop lower back pain.

Leesa US Credentials

  • All of Leesa’s mattresses (including the luxury Sapira Chill, and the brand’s flagship bed we’re covering here) and foundations are made in the USA.
  • Leesa pillows are also made in the USA, although the Premium Foam Pillow is made in China.
  • Because of the company’s domestic manufacturing, Leesa mattresses usually arrive in three to five business days.

Other User Reviews

On Leesa’s website, the original mattress has a customer review score of 4.5/5. Many people said this mattress helped improve their sleep quality, citing additional support and comfort. A few people left one-star reviews, saying the mattress lacked edge support and had a long off-gassing period.

For more information, read our full Leesa mattress review. Or for more options, see our roundup of the best memory foam mattresses.

Why Should You Buy a Mattress Made In the USA?

There are many benefits to buying a mattress manufactured in the United States. Let’s run down the list!

  • Quality of materials: Mattresses made in the USA tend to be made with higher-quality materials, often domestically sourced.
  • Craftsmanship: Many mattresses made in the USA are handcrafted, rather than mass-produced by machines.
  • Supporting the economy: When you buy an American-made mattress, you’re helping support the country’s economy, which can funnel revenue back into regional and local business.
  • Transparency: Brands that manufacture their products stateside are often very clear about when, where, and how their mattresses are made.
  • Labor laws: Mattresses made in the USA have to comply with American labor laws and manufacturing requirements, such as flammability performance and emissions levels during production. This means your mattress is more likely to be ethically sourced and produced.

Granted, every mattress company is different, and no two manufacturing processes are going to be the same, even if they’re both in the United States. You can check out each mattress’ website for specific details on how they create their sleep products, and even reach out to them through their customer service line if have any questions.
