Fans of soft beds may have been let down by so-called plush mattresses. If youโre after a super-soft mattress thatโll contour and cradle your body, melting away pressure and pain, then you might like the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid.
Our team of expert testers evaluated everything from this bedโs firmness (or lack thereof) to its performance in cooling, edge support, and more. Weโve tested more than 500 mattresses over the years weโve been in operation, helping more than 43,000 shoppers find their new favorite mattress.
In this Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid review, youโll find out all the need-to-know information, including whether or not this mattress is your match made in heaven.
Our Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Review in a Nutshell
The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid is a super-soft mattress featuring foam and coils. Itโs great for folks who need plenty of pressure relief and cradling around sensitive parts of the body. We also found it felt surprisingly breathable, which could benefit hot sleepers. It earned its lowest scores in responsiveness and edge support, so I wouldnโt recommend it to combination sleepers, sexually active couples, or folks who need a sturdy perimeter to transfer out of bed.
The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid boasts an enviable softness that will contour easily to your body. It's a great pick for sensitive joints and lightweight sleepers, as it should provide plenty of sinkage to keep both comfortable. Its breathability should also make it appealing to hot sleepers after a plush-feeling hybrid. However, we weren't exactly impressed with this bed's edge support or responsiveness, each of which was hindered by the bed's super-cushy, dense feel.
Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Mattress Performance: My Overall Rating
When we evaluate a bedโs performance, we take a look at everything from motion isolation to edge support, rating each category out of 5. These scores are then tallied into our final rating, which represents how well the mattress performs overall.
The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid earned an overall rating of 3.6 out of 5. Itโs a little on the low side, but that is mostly due to the bedโs super-soft feel, which negatively affected its edge support and responsiveness scores. However, the mattress earned high marks for pressure relief and cooling, each scoring above 4.
I Recommend the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Forโฆ
- Fans of soft mattresses โ Multiple testers proclaimed this as one of the plushest mattresses theyโve ever tested.
- Most back sleepers โ Lightweight and average-weight back sleepers should be the most comfortable on the Mint Hybrid.
- Sleepers under 130 pounds โ Most lightweight sleepers will sink into this mattress and still feel supported.

I Donโt Recommend the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Forโฆ
- Sleepers over 230 pounds โ Heavyweight sleepers will sink right through the Mint Hybridโs super-soft layers, compromising their support.
- Stomach sleepers โ To keep their hips aloft, stomach sleepers need a firm surface, which the Mint Hybrid doesnโt provide.
- Combination sleepers โ This mattress is too soft and doughy to promote ease of movement, which makes it difficult for these sleepers to switch between positions.

How Well Did the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Perform?
Our testing gets into the nitty-grittyโwe rate how the mattress performs, but we also take specific measurements for the bedโs sinkage and bounciness. On top of that, we consider how the setup process goes and any company policies that come with the mattress.
To see how the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid fares as a whole, weโve charted every score and metric and pitted it against the average of all the beds weโve tested. This way, you can see how the bed stacks up against the competition.

How Firm is the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Mattress?

We rate firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. Most online mattresses fall around 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, also called medium-firm. The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid came in at a 5/10 on our scale. This is decidedly soft.
โSome sleepers, like those who prefer to rest on their side, may do better on a softer mattress,โ says Dr. Raj Dasgupta, one of our sleep experts. โHowever, be sure your mattress isnโt too soft to compromise your alignment, which can lead to discomfort or pain.โ
How Does the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Feel for Different Body Types and Sleeping Positions?
The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybridโs softer feel is better suited to certain sleeper types. We found that most lightweight and average-weight sleepers will feel relatively comfortable on this bed, so long as they sleep on their side or back. However, this bed will likely feel too soft for sleepers over 230 pounds and those who rest on their stomach.
| Sleeper Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
| Light (under 130 lbs) | Good | Good | Good |
| Average (130-230 lbs) | Good | Good | Unpleasant |
| Heavy (over 230 lbs) | Unpleasant | Unpleasant | Unpleasant |
Average-weight Tester โ 5โ4โ, 165 lbs
โIt was better on my back than on my side. My hips were sinking fairly rapidly. However, in fairness, that is where I carry a lot of my weight.โ โ Sosha Lewis, certified sleep science coach
Lightweight Tester โ 5โ5โ, 130 lbs
โThis bed is probably one of the softest Iโve ever tried. Itโs extremely squishy and doughy, which makes it not very responsive. That being said, the bed is very comfortable.โ โ Riley Otis, expert mattress tester
Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid In-Depth Test Results
Pressure Relief
โWhen you lie down on a mattress, certain parts of your body dig into the bedโs surface, creating pressure points,โ explains Dr. Dasgupta. โA good mattress for pressure relief ensures these areas are cradled and cushioned, so you donโt end up with discomfort or pain.โ
Back and side sleepers often benefit the most from pressure relief. On your back, youโll want the mattress to relieve pressure around the lumbar spine. For side sleepers, keeping pressure off the hips and shoulders is essential. This is why we focus on these positions when evaluating a bedโs pressure relief.
We have testers representing each weight category lie down on a mattress. Underneath them is our specialized pressure mat. This mat records how much pressure builds up on the mattress surface, using thermal imaging to create a color-coded outline of our testerโs body. Red and yellow indicate areas of high pressure, while blue and green mean low pressure. More of the latter means better pressure relief.
The mat also measures the average pressure across its surface, recorded in pounds per square inch (PSI). We compare this number against our averages to see how much resistance you might encounter on the mattress. For side sleepers, our average is 14.58 PSI. For back sleepers, itโs 12.43 PSI.
The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid earned a total pressure relief score of 4.3, thanks to its super-soft feel that kept pressure off the joints.
Riley Otis was our lightweight tester for this mattress. She rated both back and side sleeping at 4/5. On her side, her pressure was 10.36 PSI, and on her back, it was 9.02 PSIโboth well under our averages. Both of her pressure maps were completely blue, except for some green in her side-sleeping results.

โThis mattress is super soft, but the only caveat is that I think it might be too soft,โ Riley said. โIt prioritizes pressure relief over support, so while you get tons of cushioning at the joints, youโre sacrificing proper spinal alignment.โ She worried that sleeping on this mattress for a long time could cause back pain.
Our average-weight tester agreed with Rileyโs sentiments, as she prefers a soft mattress. โI loved how soft and gentle it was on the joints, and speaking strictly from a pressure relief perspective, I see no issues.โ

She rated both side and back sleeping at 4.5/5, and her overall pressure was exceptionally low: 10.99 for side sleeping and 8.37 for back sleeping. This means you should feel virtually no pressure building up along the body. There was only a small yellow spot on her shoulder while side-sleeping, but she reported no discomfort during testing.
We didnโt have the opportunity for a heavyweight tester to try out this mattress, but based on our medical product tester Dr. Habeebโs assessment, itโs unlikely these sleepers will get the support they need. โI think they would really sink in to the point where theyโd have a lot of discomfort in the morning,โ she said. โTheyโd be very misaligned spinally.โ
Edge Support
A mattress with strong edges will hold its shape when you sit or lie down directly on the perimeter. The added stability can also help those with mobility concerns transfer out of bed. Strong edge support is also a good indication that a mattress wonโt sag prematurely, a sign of durability.
Most beds with coils, like the Mint Hybrid, tend to excel in this area. However, this bedโs softness negatively impacted its performance in this category, leading to a final edge support score of 3.2/5.
My colleague Sosha Lewis first observed the bedโs edge support by sitting down at the perimeter and seeing how well it could bear weight. โThis bed has a lot of sinkage,โ she said. โI felt very insecure, like I could slip off.โ
She also evaluated how easy it was to get in and out of bed. โI could get up without any assistance, but I would not want an older person in this bed. Itโs too unstable,โ she said. She ultimately rated this test at a 2/5.
Lying down on the edge of the mattress produced similar results. โI was terrified of falling out anytime I was close to the edge on my side,โ she explained. โIt was slightly better on my back, but itโs still probably the most unstable Iโve felt performing this test.โ Again, this test earned a 2/5 rating.

Our final test is our weighted edge support test, in which we stack weight plates along the edge of the mattress to mimic a lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight tester sitting on the mattress. Then we measure how much the bed sinks.
For our lightweight tester, the bed sank only 2โณ, which earns a 5/5 rating. This increased to 3.5 for our average-weight test, and then to 5.25 for our heavyweight stack, each earning a 3.5/5 and 3/5 respectively. โI understand that numbers are numbers, but how this bed performed in the weighted edge support did not translate to the real life situation,โ Sosha added.
If youโre after a bed with better edge support, weโd suggest opting for a firmer hybrid with more robust layers.
Cooling
Overheating every night? It might be time for a cooling mattress. The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid does contain some cooling tech; its proprietary T&N Adaptive foam features gel and graphite infusions, plus an open-celled construction for more airflow. We put it through our cooling test to see if the bed lives up to the hype.

To see how much heat a mattress holds onto, we use a thermal gun to measure the increase in a bedโs surface temperature. We take two readings: one before anyoneโs gotten in bed, and a second after theyโve rested there for seven minutes. For the Mint Hybrid, these readings were 71 degrees and 77.5 degrees, a 6.5-degree increase.
As the chart below shows, this earns an overall cooling score of 4/5.
| Less than a 4-degree change | 5/5 |
| 4-6 degree change | 4.5/5 |
| 6-8 degree change | 4/5 |
| 8-10 degree change | 3.5/5 |
| 10-12 degree change | 3/5 |
| 12-14 degree change | 2.5/5 |
| 14-16 degree change | 2/5 |
| 16+ degree change | 1/5 |
Sosha, who performed this test, also commented on how the mattress felt while she was lying on it. She said, โIt wasnโt noticeably cooling, but I also didnโt feel hot.โ This temperature-neutral feel should appeal to most sleepers, though especially hot sleepers looking for active cooling may want a bed that scored higher in this category.
Motion Isolation
If youโre a light sleeper like me, youโve probably woken up from your partner tossing, turning, or getting in and out of bed in the middle of the night. This means you were sleeping on a mattress with poor motion isolation. A bed that excels in this area will absorb movement before it can travel across the surface and disturb whoeverโs resting on the other side.
We test motion isolation in two methods. First up is our water glass test. We place a glass of water on one side of the bed, then move around on the other. How the water behaves tells us how much movement is felt on the other side.
My colleague Sosha first got in and out of bed to test the level of motion transfer. โI noticed a small ripple when I was getting in and out of bed,โ she said. โHowever, even when I aggressively sat down, I wasnโt concerned that the water was going to splash out.โ This part of the test earned a 4/5.
Next, she switched positions beside the glass. โI had to get pretty close for the water to wave about,โ she said, giving this test a 4.5/5 rating.

At last comes our partner test. For this test, another tester joined Sosha in the mattress to act as her rowdy partner. Sosha lay on one side of the mattress, blindfolded to see if she could sense his movement, and whether it would be enough to disturb her sleep.
โWhen my partner was sitting down, I didnโt feel a lot of motionโonly when he aggressively plopped down, but still not enough to disturb me,โ she said. โHowever, the bed is so soft and unresponsive that I could really feel him when he was turning over. This was mainly because it took so much energy to roll over.โ Based on this, Sosha awarded the partner test a 3/5.
This brought the overall motion isolation score for the Mint Hybrid to 3.8/5. Most couples should be able to rest undisturbed, so long as neither of you is a super-light or super-rowdy sleeper.
โIt would drive me nuts to sleep with my restless husband in this bed. However, if you donโt sleep with someone who seems to be in a street fight at night like him, I think you would be fine,โ Sosha said.
Response
A responsive mattress will snap back into place when you push down on the surface. This makes moving around feel seamless and not like youโre getting โstuckโ in the bed. Unfortunately, this quicksand situation was exactly what we encountered on the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid.
When Sosha tried to move around on top of this bed, she noted it was โnot easy.โ She explained, โThis mattress is super soft, and you sink deep into it. It takes muscle and effort to move from your back to your side, let alone from back to stomach.โ
The Mint Hybrid earned a 2/5 for responsiveness, its lowest performance score. Based on Soshaโs findings, I wouldnโt recommend this mattress for sleepers who switch positions throughout the night.
Sinkage: Deep
How much sinkage you want in your mattress is largely determined by your personal preference. Do you like to feel โhuggedโ and totally enveloped by your mattress? Then youโll want a bed with deep sinkage. If youโre like me and want to feel like youโre โon topโ of your mattress, less sinkage is best.
To test a bedโs sinkage, we place a kettlebell on the surface and use a ruler to measure how far it dips. For the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid, we measured a whopping 6.75โณ of sinkage, more than double what we see on average. Youโll certainly get that deep โhugโ with this bed.
| Light Sinkage | 0-2.5โ |
| Moderate Sinkage | 2.6-4โ |
| Deep Sinkage | 4+โ |

Bounce: High
A soft mattress like the Mint Hybrid doesnโt usually have much bounce. It earned a 2/5 in our responsiveness test, so I wasnโt holding my breath for this test, either.
In this evaluation, we drop a ball from six feet in the air and see how high it bounces back. Weโd consider anything over 18โณ as โhighโ bounce. Our results for the Mint Hybrid surpassed this at 22โณ, but I donโt think most sleepers are going to feel this bounce. Itโs muffled by the bedโs super-soft and doughy layers.
| Low Bounce | 12โ or less |
| Moderate Bounce | 12โ-18โ |
| High Bounce | 18โ or more |
Noise
Despite having coils, the Mint Hybrid didnโt make a peep during testing. Thereโs always the chance it could start to squeak or creak over time, but weโre fairly confident itโll remain silent. Therefore, we gave it a 5/5 in this category.
Sex
A good mattress for sex will be responsive enough to make repositioning easier, have strong edges to give you full use of your bedโs surface area, and remain quiet so there are no distractions. The Mint Hybrid may be silent, but it earned its lowest scores in responsiveness and edge support. Sexually active couples will find it extremely difficult to move around on this bedโs surface, which can put a damper on the main event.
Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Customer Experience Scores
A new mattress comes with a lot of freebies, like a sleep trial and free shipping. We factor this, along with our experience unboxing the mattress, into our final customer experience evaluation. Letโs take a look at what the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid has to offer.
Trial Period
A sleep trial allows you to try before you commit to buying. Most brands allow you to return the mattress for a full refund, provided you do so within the trial period.
The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid comes with a 100-night sleep trial. While it gives you a few months to decide if the mattress is for you, it isnโt the longest weโve seen. Some brands give you up to a full year to decide. It earned a 3.5/5 for its trial period.
Warranty
Mattress warranties cover manufacturing defects and flaws. Theyโre also a good preview of how long you can expect your mattress to last. Most brands wonโt cover beyond a bedโs perceived lifetime.
Tuft & Needle offers a 10-year limited warranty for the Mint Hybrid. This falls within the typical lifespan of most mattresses (about 5 to 10 years), but itโs not the most generous. Many brands offer 15-year, 20-year, or even a lifetime warranty. As a result, it earned a 3.5/5 warranty rating.
Unboxing and Moving
The Mint Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress, meaning it arrives at your door fully compressed into a box. In our studio, one tester was able to move it by herself. She noted that the box was heavy and the bed began to puff up when its plastic casing was removed.
She noted the mattress was โnot very structurally soundโ when dragging it around the studio. Its soft feel means it flops around, which can make it difficult to move onto a frame. Other than this, the setup was seamless, so she rated it unboxing and moving at 4/5.

Readiness After Unboxing
โWe didnโt have to wait any time for the mattress to fully expand,โ our tester said. She rated its readiness after unboxing at 5/5. You should be able to use this mattress relatively quickly after opening it.

Off-gassing
Our tester commented on a โchemical, factory scentโ upon unboxing the mattress. This is called โoff-gassing,โ and itโs generally harmless, but it can irritate sensitive noses. For this reason, we gave it a 4/5 for off-gassing.
Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Construction
Letโs take a look at whatโs inside the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid.
Mattress Height & Weight
The Mint Hybrid stands 14โณ tall. Depending on the size you choose, it can weigh between 77 and 146 lbs.
Materials
As a hybrid, the Mint mattress contains both foam layers and coils. Iโll dive into the specifics of each layer below.
Layers

The mattress starts out with an antimicrobial-infused cover, which should help keep the sleep surface clean and fresh. Underneath is a thick layer of responsive, breathable foam.
Another layer of ventilated foam allows air to flow through while relieving pressure. The last layer before the coil unit is a thick, open-celled foam infused with both cooling gel and graphite to reduce heat retention as it cushions.
The coil layer is made up of two types of coils: microcoils for pinpoint support and regular-sized individually wrapped coils to align the spine. These pocketed coils also help to reduce motion transfer, as the coils respond individually to movement.
A firm foam base rounds out the mattress.
How To Try and Buy The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Mattress
You can find in-store locations to try out the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid on the brandโs website. For example, multiple Crate and Barrel stores carry the mattress.
If you donโt want to spend the time and effort shopping in-person, take full advantage of the brandโs 100-night sleep trial. The mattress ships free to the contiguous United States. Fees apply for Alaska and Hawaii.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid vs. Helix Midnight
We recommend both the Helix Midnight and Mint Hybrid for side sleepers, but if youโre after more support, Iโd suggest the Midnight. This bed skews closer to medium-firm, which can accommodate heavier frames and other sleeping positions.
The Mint Hybrid did score higher in our cooling tests, making it a better pick for hot sleepers. On the other hand, the Midnight has exceptional edge support. You should be able to spread out on this mattress to your heartโs content. Also, the Midnight is often a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Mint Hybrid, thanks to frequent sales.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid vs. Nectar Classic Hybrid
Both the Mint Hybrid and Nectar Classic Hybrid are soft mattresses with foam and coils. Despite their similar feel, the main difference is their price. You can get a queen-size Nectar for about $800, quite an affordable price for a hybrid. The same size Mint Hybrid will cost double that and more at $2,045.
The Nectar also scored higher in motion isolation, making it the better option for couples. Both beds are also good for back sleepers, but those with larger frames may enjoy Nectarโs superior support.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid vs. Saatva Classic
The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid is priced over $2,000, which is typical for luxury mattresses. But if youโre after a truly luxurious-feeling mattress, I recommend the Saatva Classic. This bed features two coil units, zoned support, and a plush pillow topโit even comes with free white-glove delivery.
The Saatva Classic has a much firmer feel, in contrast to the Mint Hybridโs soft, contouring layers. Itโs a favored pick for stomach sleepers and those over 230 pounds who need added support. The Mint Hybrid is better for sleepers with sensitive joints who want to sink deeply into their mattress.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Mattress FAQs
Is Tuft & Needle Mint a good mattress?
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is a good mattress for sleepers after a super-soft, contouring foam feel in a hybrid bed. Side sleepers and those with joint pain are best-suited to this bed.
What are the negatives of a hybrid mattress?
Hybrid mattresses contain coils, which can sometimes affect motion isolation. They also tend to be more expensive than all-foam mattresses. While feels and construction vary, you may not get the super-sinkage of traditional memory foam from a hybrid.
What is the lifespan of a Tuft & Needle mattress?
We expect the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid to last 5 to 10 years, as is typical of most mattresses. The bed does come with a 10-year warranty, so youโll be insured for that length of time.
Is Tuft & Needle Mint better than Casper Snow?
Both mattresses are soft hybrids with cooling features. Whether oneโs better or not will depend on your preferences and needs. The Casper Snow is significantly cheaper than the Mint Hybrid, which may make it more appealing to budget shoppers.
