The Puffy mattress is a 7/10 on the firmness scale. In the mattress industry, we rate mattresses on a scale of 1-10 with 6.5 being the industry average. That means the Puffy is slightly firmer than average.
The TEMPUR-Pedic comes in right at the medium firm average of 6.5/10. This mattress will be softer than the Puffy, but will still be a medium firmness.
Sleeping On the Puffy And TEMPUR-Pedic Mattresses
Back sleepers and most side sleepers should have a great experience on the Puffy. Back sleepers will find good lumbar support and comfort. This mattress should do a good job relieving back pain. Most side sleepers will find this to be a pressure relieving mattress. However, heavier side sleepers might feel a bit of pressure on their hips. The Puffy is not supportive enough for stomach sleepers.
The TEMPUR-Pedic is a great mattress for back sleepers. They will find a good balance of support and comfort. Side sleepers should feel good on this mattress, though lighter side sleepers may not compress the foam enough to get great pressure relief. This mattress will be too soft for stomach sleepers and they should instead look at our best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
What Do The Puffy And TEMPUR-Pedic Mattresses Feel Like?
As an all-foam mattress, the Puffy has a traditional slow-moving feel. Sleepers will gently sink into the cloud-like layers and feel fantastic pressure relief.
The TEMPUR-Pedic has a classic foam feel. When many people think of a memory foam feel, they’re actually thinking of the TEMPUR material. Those who enjoy the slow moving memory foam feel will love this mattress.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
The Puffy mattress should provide a good night’s sleep for average weight back sleepers. Its climate comfort foam was designed to contour to your body and provide support throughout the night in this sleep position. Average weight side sleepers should also find decent support on this mattress. However, it is too soft for stomach sleepers.
The TEMPUR-Pedic mattress should provide good support for average weight side and back sleepers. However, sleepers closer to 130lbs might not compress the foam enough to get the needed relief on pressure points. Stomach sleepers probably won’t find enough support on this mattress. Those closer to 130lbs might find the TEMPUR-Pedic bed supportive enough when they sleep on their stomach.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
The Puffy mattress should provide excellent support for heavyweight side sleepers. Those closer to 300lbs will need a mattress with coils and should check out the Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress review or Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress review, which both are hybrids with coils. Heavyweight side sleepers might feel a bit of pressure on their hips in this sleeping position. Stomach sleepers should look elsewhere as they might bow out on this mattress.
Heavyweight back sleepers should find a good night’s rest on the TEMPUR-Pedic. However, those closer to 300lbs will need a mattress with coils. Heavier side sleepers might feel some pressure on their hips and shoulders. Heavier stomach sleepers will also not get the support they need on this mattress.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
Lightweight people should enjoy the Puffy mattress if they’re a back or side sleeper. They will get enough support and body contouring on either their side or back. However, extremely lightweight side sleepers won’t sink far enough into the mattress and made feel some pressure on the shoulders and hips. Stomach sleepers weighing less than 130lbs should get enough support from this mattress.
The TEMPUR-Pedic will undoubtedly give enough support to lightweight back sleepers, though it may feel a bit firm for the first couple weeks. Lightweight side sleepers might also feel like the mattress is too firm at first, but after it softens, they will receive excellent support as well. Stomach sleepers with a lightweight body type will not get enough support on this mattress.
Mattress Construction Differences
Let’s dive into the construction differences of these two mattresses.
The Puffy has a soft, breathable cover that permits airflow. Their patent stain-resistant cloud cover is easy to wash, hypoallergenic, and ensures you get a quality night’s sleep.
The TEMPUR-Pedic has a stretch cover which is also quite breathable. It’s designed to not trap heat and permit airflow.
The puffy mattress has two comfort layers. The top layer is the cooling cloud layer. It contains soft memory foam and is also infused with gel to help with cooling and heat dissipation. The second comfort layer, the climate comfort layer, acts as a transition. Puffy’s climate comfort layer is a foam transition layer to stop people from sinking too far into the mattress. It also helps regulate temperature.
The TEMPUR-Pedic comfort layer is made from their famous TEMPUR material. It has a stereotypical memory foam feel and allows you to sink into your mattress.
Puffy has a standard base of support polyfoam. This layer ensures you’re getting a balance of comfort and support. Underneath, they have a grip base cover so your mattress will stay in place no matter how much you toss and turn throughout the night.
The TEMPUR-Pedic has two support layers as well. These two layers of support foam provide extra comfort throughout the night.
The Puffy mattress is 10” tall.
The TEMPUR-Pedic is also 10″ tall.

Puffy and TEMPUR-Pedic Performance Differences
Still deciding which should be your new mattress? Let’s look at some key performance differences between the two.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
Because Puffy’s cooling cloud layer has gel-infusions, this mattress will be a great option for hot sleepers. Traditionally, all-foam mattresses sleep hot but Puffy combats that with its cooling technology, offering a responsive foam feel without trapping heat.
The TEMPUR-Pedic also has some cooling technologies as well. However, as an all-foam mattress it sleeps hot for those who are extremely sensitive to this. Hot sleepers should consider the Puffy or check out TEMPUR’s breeze series, such as the TEMPUR-Cloud Supreme Breeze mattress.
Motion transfer is especially important if you share a bed with a partner. A bed with good motion transfer means you won’t feel your partner tossing and turning in the middle of the night.
Luckily, both the Puffy and the TEMPUR-Pedic do a good job at motion isolation because they are all-foam beds.
The Puffy’s edge support isn’t the most secure. If you’re lying near the edge, you should feel supported. However, if you bend down to tie your shoe, you might feel the edge collapse underneath you.
The TEMPUR-Pedic has slightly better edge support. You should feel secure whether your lying or sitting on the edge of a TEMPUR-Pedic.
Both of these mattresses are fairly durable, especially for foam mattresses. However the TEMPUR-Pedic might be slightly more durable than the Puffy because of its signature TEMPUR material.
As a bed-in-a-box, the Puffy mattress will off-gas, or emit an odor when they are first taken out of the box. However, any odor will dissipate within 24 hours.
Some TEMPUR-Pedic models do off-gas, but it’s a similar story to the Puffy. Any smells or odors will dissipate within 48 hours.
Since the Puffy is an all-foam mattress, there should be no noise as you move around throughout the night.
The TEMPUR-Pedic also won’t make noise as you move around during the night.
Because of its all-foam feel and responsiveness, the Puffy is a great mattress for sex.
TEMPUR-Pedic might not be the most responsive mattress and couples may find it difficult to move around during intercourse. Is this is especially important, take a look at our picks for the best mattresses for sex.
