We all make compromises in our daily lives, but quality sleep should never be one of them. If you think a new mattress might be the solution you seek, but don’t want to break the bank, the Boring Hybrid offers comfort and support at a sensible price.
To assist you with making the healthiest choice for yourself, our team put the Boring Hybrid through comprehensive testing in our Charlotte, NC, studio. Since 2018, we have tested more than 500 mattresses and sleep products, evaluating each bed based on rigorous testing, as well as input from our chief medical adviser, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM.
Is the Boring Hybrid mattress right for you? Ultimately, you will have to decide, but we think this is a solid choice for many back sleepers who are looking for vital pressure relief. Also, the high-quality foam provides excellent motion isolation, while the sturdy springs provide responsiveness for combination sleepers.
The Boring Hybrid mattress may lack fancy frills, but for the price, we think it’s a bit of a steal. It’s both supportive and pressure-relieving, and our tester thought it was an especially good match for back sleepers on a budget. Although it’s bouncy enough to help you change positions with ease, it doesn’t transfer motion nearly as much as other hybrids we’ve tested. It’s biggest drawback is that it doesn’t regulate temperature as well as beds with built-in cooling features.
Boring Hybrid Mattress Performance: My Overall Rating
We use our testing methodology to evaluate each mattress and sleep product by assessing the materials used, construction, and how it performs for a sample of people with different body types and sleep styles. The Boring Hybrid performed very well in several of our test categories, achieving an overall score of 4.4/5. With the Boring brand’s focus on affordability, its hybrid bed deserves a second look.
The Boring Hybrid received its highest scores in both motion isolation and responsiveness. It also performed well in pressure relief, providing comfort for both side and back sleepers. Our testers were also impressed with its edge support and the use of this mattress with an adjustable base.
However, it received less-than-stellar scores in cooling, meaning it is likely not a great match for hot sleepers. It also lacked edge support due to the softer foam perimeter. While this results in a more comfortable surface when you’re lying on the edge of the bed, this mattress does sink significantly if you perch on the edge.
If you would like to know more about each individual score, just hover your cursor over each test category to see its definition.
I Recommend the Boring Hybrid For…
- Back sleepers — The Boring Hybrid performed very well for back sleepers, with a tester noting that it supported their lower back and provided no pressure in their shoulders.
- Couples — This bed’s high scores for motion isolation mean less sleep disturbances for co-sleepers when compared to other mattress brands.
- Adjustable bed owners — This mattress earned high scores for fitting the adjustable base with no gapping or shifting.

I Don’t Recommend the Boring Hybrid For…
- Hot sleepers — Although our testers found the mattress comfortable to sleep on, it didn’t perform as well in our cooling test and may not be a suitable match for those experiencing hot flashes or night sweats.
- Side sleepers — The lack of contouring may make this bed feel too firm for side sleepers, who may want to opt for the Boring AF (the mattress company’s all-foam model)
- People with mobility issues — This mattress has foam borders, which may not provide enough firmness for easy rising.

How Firm is the Boring Hybrid Mattress?

We test mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. The sleep industry standard for most beds is medium-firm, which corresponds to a firmness rating of 6.5/10 on our scale. When our specialists tried the Boring Hybrid, its firmness rating changed depending on the tester’s position.
During testing, we noted the Boring Hybrid’s firmness varied depending on the tester’s position. It was given a universally appealing 6.5/10 on the firmness scale for back sleepers, but scored a little higher when the testers turned to their sides and stomachs, receiving ratings of 7/10 and 7.5/10, respectively.

How Does the Boring Hybrid Feel for Different Body Types and Sleeping Positions?
Individual body weight is an important factor in determining the right mattress to purchase. Our chief medical advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, reminds us, “Just as sleep is an individualized experience, so are mattress preferences. A bed that works wonderfully for me may be terrible for someone else.” Larger-bodied sleepers will typically experience more sinkage, meaning they often benefit from a bed that feels too firm for light and average-weight individuals.
This mattress will suit many back sleepers, and the additional firmness felt in the prone position should be beneficial to average-weight and heavier stomach sleepers. However, the lack of contouring may cause pressure buildup for side sleepers.
Sleeper Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Light (under 130 lbs) | Unpleasant | Excellent | Good |
Average (130-230 lbs) | Good | Excellent | Good |
Heavy (over 230 lbs) | Good | Good | Excellent |
Boring Hybrid In-Depth Test Results
Pressure Relief
Considering that many of us will experience joint and back pain in our lives, testing the Boring Hybrid’s ability to relieve pressure was a priority. A mattress that provides adequate pressure relief can help ease pain and improve our sleep quality.
Dr. Dasgupta said, “If you have a mattress that doesn’t match your needs, it can make your pressure point discomfort worse.” Hybrid mattresses are often a solid choice for those seeking to avoid pressure build-up, as they employ a balanced approach of supportive coils and contouring foams.”
Our testing begins by having sleep testers with different body types and sleep styles try out the mattresses to assess comfort, paying special attention to how well they are supported. This helps determine what bed suits each individual. Additionally, each tester lies on an electronic mat that generates a “pressure map.”

This color-coded map records testers in different sleeping positions, allowing us to identify which areas of the body are most susceptible to pressure buildup. Areas with increased pressure show up in yellow, orange, and red; low-pressure areas are blue or green. A pressure map that’s mostly blue indicates a bed with optimal pressure relief.
The Boring Hybrid was consistent in its test results for pressure relief, performing well for both side and back sleepers. Our average-weight sleep tester, Kayla Godfrey, had particular praise for how she felt lying on her back.
“I feel really great on my back on this mattress. It has a balanced medium-firm feel. I can feel some support in my lower back and no pressure in my upper back or shoulders. I feel more on top of the mattress, but the comfort layer is doing a good job of contouring me in all the right places,” she said.
Kayla did note the firmness of the hybrid and that she would appreciate more give or sinkage when sleeping on her side, but thought it would work for others, saying, “I think if you are a heavier weight sleeper than me the side sleeping position would feel amazing for you but for me I would say it feels pretty average.” This versatility earns the Boring Hybrid its excellent 4.5/5 pressure relief score, making it a solid and affordable choice for those concerned with joint care.
Edge Support
A mattress with quality edge support has sides that won’t sag when you sit or lie on the outside perimeter of the bed. This can make the bed a more functional piece of furniture. A firm edge makes using the mattress as seating possible and gives couples the maximum amount of room to stretch out. Edge support is vital for anyone with mobility issues, but it’s also a sign of quality. A stronger perimeter will sag less with time and prolong the life of the mattress.

The Boring Hybrid has an overall edge support score of 4 out of 5, with our tester Kayla noting that the foam edge has more give than the coils throughout the center of the bed. She sees it as a compromise, saying, “While this creates a more comfortable edge than the springs coming to the edge, I think it does create more sinkage without that extra support. I did notice more sinkage on this model than the all-foam model. It was easy to get out of bed, but you don’t get that springing sensation of a typical hybrid mattress.”
Kayla was satisfied with the edge support of this mattress for actual sleeping, justifying the 4/5 score. “I felt fully supported when I was lying near the perimeter. I think the all-foam model still performed better than this one, so if edge support is really important to you, then perhaps the all-foam mattress is a better choice. As far as the hybrid model goes, the edge support lying down was very good overall, and I did not feel like I would roll off or tilt off the mattress.”
Cooling
If you’ve ever been too hot to sleep, you can understand why we test mattresses for their cooling properties. Cooler temperatures have been proven to help you fall asleep faster and improve your sleep quality. However, before lowering the thermostat too much, consider that your mattress can impact how your body regulates temperature when you sleep.
In addition to evaluating the mattress materials for airflow, our testers use a cooling gun to record the surface temperature before anyone touches it and again after resting on it for seven minutes. The overall increase determines the score, with a 10-degree increase considered average and any amount below that considered good to exceptional.

The Boring Hybrid lacks specific cooling technology, such as cooling gel-infused foam, and scored below average, earning a rating of 2.5/5. Our tester, Kayla, recorded a 12-degree increase during the process. However, she felt that the mattress performed better than the numbers suggested.
“Just going off my senses, I think this mattress did a really good job of cooling. I couldn’t really feel the mattress warming up at all. Rubbing my hand over the area where I lay, I could tell the difference, but not while I was lying down.” The Hybrid might not be the best option if cooling is your top priority, but otherwise, it’s a comfortable choice.
Motion Isolation
Every light sleeper knows how important a mattress’s ability to dampen movements made by a partner or pet can be. Co-sleeping with a restless bedmate is possible with a mattress rated highly in motion isolation, which we test in two parts: the ripple test and the couple’s motion test.

For the ripple test, we set a glass of water on one side of the bed while our tester moves around on the other side. The Boring Hybrid performed beautifully, with Kayla noting, “The water stayed very stationary for this test. There was minimal movement in the glass, indicating that this mattress offers excellent motion isolation. I would expect a hybrid mattress to not do as well for motion, but this one did exceptionally well for motion isolation.”
Kayla was equally pleased with the couple test, which tests the movement when another person is switching positions, or getting in or out of bed, saying, “I noticed the motion for all of my testing partner’s movements, but it was very light overall. I felt the cover stretching more than anything, and a gentle rocking of the mattresses. The mattress has very little bounce, so my body did not move or jostle around.” This earned the Boring a score of 5/5 for motion isolation and appreciation from light sleepers everywhere.
Response
The response of a mattress is a measurement of how quickly the surface reaches its original shape after a weight is added and removed. This is important for folks who change sleeping positions through the night (combination sleepers) and also for sexually active couples, determining ease of movement and resistance from the mattress material.

The Boring Hybrid excelled in this test, scoring a 5/5 in responsiveness. This mattress performed exceptionally during our sinkage, bounce, and switch tests, with our testers noting an ease of movement due to the coils providing a “bouncy design”.
Sinkage: Moderate
Sinkage measures how much the mattress dips when a weight is placed upon it. If you prefer to feel “cradled” in your mattress, as opposed to lying on the surface, then you won’t mind a greater amount of sinkage. However, deep sinkage can make it a struggle to reposition and should be a consideration, especially if you’re a combination sleeper.

This is why Boring Hybrid has a moderate sinkage rating. Heavier sleepers will find significant shrinkage (6 inches, in our testing), which could make the bed difficult to escape in a hurry. Average-weight and lighter sleepers won’t create as much sinkage and shouldn’t have issues with moving about on this bed.
Bounce: High
Another measurement that determines ease of movement across the mattress is our bounce test. To test this, our experts drop a rubber ball onto the mattress and record the height of its bounce.
The Boring Hybrid performed very well on this test, with the ball bouncing 31.5”, which greatly exceeds our average bounce of 18”. This reflects the firmness of this bed and indicates it facilitates easy movement for the user.
Noise
Noisiness is another important category for light sleepers, who will wake up to any noise, regardless of how faint it is. Some mattresses will crackle or creak due to their construction, but that’s not the case with the Boring Hybrid. “The mattress does not make any noise,” said our tester Kayla, cementing the 5/5 score for this hybrid. This also bodes well for those with restless partners.
Sex
For couples who are mattress shopping with sex as a consideration, we look at performance in the areas of edge support and response. These help determine whether the mattress has ease of movement and a supportive surface area. We also factor in how much noise it makes in case you want to keep your intimate moments private. The affordable Boring Hybrid earns a sexy 5/5 in this test, making it a great contender for cost-conscious couples.
Adjustable Base Compatibility
Adjustable bed frames continue to gain popularity, so we look at how each mattress works with adjustable bases to assess the fit. The Boring Hybrid is ideal for an adjustable base. Kayla raved, “This is one of the best mattresses I’ve seen on an adjustable base. It has zero gapping when I’m lying down, and even when I hop off, it doesn’t lift off the base. It stays on the base properly.”

Boring Hybrid Customer Experience Scores
A mattress is a major purchase, so we review the buying particulars to help you understand what to expect when you receive it at home.
Trial Period
The Boring Hybrid comes with a 365-night sleep trial. We rated the trial period 5/5 as a year should give you plenty of time to see if the bed works for you.
Warranty
We were not as impressed with the limited 10-year warranty as we were with the year-long trial. This is an affordable mattress, but the shorter warranty may indicate that this offering from the Boring Mattress Co won’t have the durability of some of its competitors. We felt this warranty earned 3.5/5.
Unboxing and Moving
The Boring Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box, so it will need to be unboxed, so we also rate our tester’s experience to give you a better sense of whether your mattress set-up is a solo job or if you will need to call in reinforcements. “This mattress is on the heavier side for lifting alone. I wouldn’t say it was abnormally heavy for a hybrid mattress, but if you have trouble lifting, I may grab a friend to help with this one.” We gave it a score of 3/5 for this reason.

Readiness After Unboxing
You can use the Boring Hybrid almost immediately, our tester noted: “I was able to open the mattress and within an hour use it without any issues.”

Off-gassing
The Boring Hybrid did not have an issue with odor. “The mattress did have a slight chemical smell, but nothing out of the ordinary or overwhelming. It didn’t give me a headache like with some brands,” said Kayla Godfrey.
Boring Hybrid Construction
Now, we’ll review the manufacturing process of the mattress and what that means for your purchase.
Mattress Height & Weight

The mattress is 10” tall. Depending on the size, it ranges from 45 pounds to 95 pounds, with a queen mattress weighing 80 pounds.
Materials
The Boring Hybrid is constructed with a combination of pocketed coils and foam. It is fiberglass-free.
Layers

The Boring Hybrid features six distinct layers, starting with a breathable knit cover. Following that is the fiberglass-free fire barrier, which is a safety feature.
The next layer is designed with pressure relief and temperature relief in mind. The open-cell structure of the foam allows airflow, which enables heat to dissipate from your body while you sleep.
That’s followed by the responsive support layer that transitions you from plush comfort layers to the supportive coils. This bed also includes foam-enhanced edges that help provide stability and ensure you don’t feel the final layer of coils in the motion-reducing base.
How to Try and Buy the Boring Hybrid Mattress
Boring mattresses can be purchased from the Boring website. I found this site easy to navigate and compare products. Currently, Boring does not have a brick-and-mortar store nor can you get it from Amazon, such as other brands like Tuft & Needle. Instead, the manufacturer tries to save costs by shipping directly to you from their USA-based warehouse.
You’ll have a year to try the bed and see if it works for you, although we recommend starting the return process at least 30 days before the end of the trial period.

Boring Hybrid vs. DLX Premier Hybrid
The DLX Premier Hybrid is comparable in scores to the Boring Hybrid, but offers some of the extras the Boring company eschews for lower prices. The DLX Premier Hybrid comes in three firmness options, making it easier to find the right fit for different weight sleepers. This hybrid also scored higher in our cooling tests, making it a comfortable option.

There is a large cost discrepancy between these brands, with the Boring Hybrid starting at $599, with the queen-size DLX having a hefty price tag of $2,199.
Boring Hybrid vs. Birch Natural
The Birch Natural is considered an environmentally friendly mattress-in-a-box because it’s made with natural latex, organic cotton and wool. This may appeal to those with sensitivities to chemicals used in the manufacture of some beds.

Similar to the Boring Hybrid in terms of responsiveness and edge support. However, the Birch is a much better pick for hot sleepers, while couples and combination sleepers may enjoy the Boring’s superior motion isolation. The Boring Hybrid is a more budget-friendly option.
Boring Hybrid vs. DreamCloud Hybrid
While the DreamCloud Hybrid has firmness scores similar to the Boring mattress, you can also purchase the DreamCloud Hybrid with a pillow-top for added softness, making it a good option if you prefer a nestling feel in your bed.

The DreamCloud also offers a lifetime warranty and starts at a remarkable price of $399.
