Disclaimer: We tested the Series Three Medium model of the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS. Each series and firmness level will likely differ in feel, construction, and performance.
Our Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Review in a Nutshell
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS is a luxury hybrid that features multiple layers of slow-moving, cushioning foam. We thought the Medium model of the Series Three line had a medium-firm feel, which should provide excellent support for back sleepers. The mattress also excels in motion isolation, responsiveness, and edge support, making it an excellent choice for couples. We wouldnโt recommend it for hot sleepers due to its less-than-stellar cooling performance, and budget shoppers wonโt find a love connection, since any size will cost you at least $3,000.
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS is a high-end hybrid with robust coils and soft comfort layers that create a balanced, luxurious sleep experience. We tested out the Medium option for the Series Three model and found it to be slightly firmer than expected but still plenty pressure-relieving. This bed earned high marks for responsiveness, edge support, and motion isolation, with the latter earning a perfect 5/5 score. However, it doesn't have the best cooling, and at a minimum $3,500 price point, it's not the best match for shoppers on a budget.
Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Mattress Performance: My Overall Rating
Our mattress testing methodology encompasses a wide range of performance categories, from how cool a bed feels to the customer service that comes with it. Each of these areas is rated out of 5 and then tallied into our final score. This gives you a holistic view of how the mattress performs overall.
After testing, the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS earned a respectable overall rating of 4.3 out of 5. It received high score in a number of categories, including pressure relief, edge support, and motion isolationโthe latter earning a perfect 5/5 rating. Its lowest rating was for cooling, a relatively average score of 3.5/5.
I Recommend the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Forโฆ
- Back sleepers of all sizes โ The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS has a medium-firm feel and good pressure relief, which will suit back sleepers best.
- Couples โ This mattress has excellent motion isolation, as well as good responsiveness and edge support, which should appeal to co-sleepers.
- Folks with joint pain โ Thereโs plenty of sinkage and contouring on this mattress to protect any sensitive joints.

I Donโt Recommend the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Forโฆ
- Budget shoppers โ As a luxury mattress, the Black Hybrid XCS costs a pretty penny.
- Sleepers who run hot โ We werenโt impressed with this bedโs performance in our cooling tests.
- Stomach sleepers โ These folks will likely encounter too much sinkage to remain in proper alignment.

How Firm is the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Mattress?

We rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. Most beds fall around 6.5/10 on our scale, or medium-firm. โThese beds provide an excellent mix of softness and support, which can suit multiple sleeper types,โ explains Dr. Raj Dasgupta, sleep science expert.
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS comes in three series and multiple firmness options. We tested out the Medium model of the Series Three, and found it came in at a 7/10. This is slightly firmer than true medium-firm, providing a supportive feel. However, the soft foam upper layers add a bit more contouring.
How Does the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Feel for Different Body Types and Sleeping Positions?
โYour body type and sleeping position both play a role in whether a mattress feels comfortable,โ says Dr. Dasgupta. โThis means that certain beds are better-suited to certain sleeper types.โ
As for the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS, we found that the Medium Series Three model provided a balance of support and slight softness.
Back sleepers will likely have the most success on this mattress. Average-weight sleepers are the best weight category for this bed, followed by lightweight sleepers, who should enjoy side-sleeping on this mattress. Most stomach sleepers (especially those over 230 pounds) wonโt find the mattress comfortable.
| Sleeper Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
| Light (under 130 lbs) | Excellent | Excellent | Good |
| Average (130-230 lbs) | Good | Excellent | Unpleasant |
| Heavy (over 230 lbs) | Good | Good | Unpleasant |
Average-weight Tester โ 5โ6โ, 165 lbs
โI thought I would like this more than I did on my stomach. Somehow, the foams werenโt soft enough around my chest but were too soft around my hips. I didnโt get enough support in my hips. It definitely wasnโt the worst, but if you are a strict stomach sleeper, I think there are better options.โ โ Sosha Lewis, certified sleep science coach
Lightweight Tester โ 5โ5โ, 130 lbs
โThe foam made it super comfortable for side sleepingโI felt like the bed molded to me rather than pushing against me. That being said, thereโs still enough support kicking in from the coil layer to keep me nice and aligned.โ โ Riley Otis, expert mattress tester
Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS In-Depth Test Results
Pressure Relief
The best mattresses for pressure relief will cradle and cushion sensitive parts of the body as they dig in. This is usually achieved with soft, contouring materials like memory foamโof which the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS has plenty.
We test pressure relief by having testers lie on their back and side (the two positions that most benefit from pressure relief) on top of the mattress. Each tester represents a different weight category (lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight) to get a holistic view of how the bed performs. We place a specialized mat beneath each sleeper that records pressure buildup.
Using thermal imaging, this map creates a color-coded map that shows areas of high and low pressure across the body. Blue and green are low pressure, while yellow and red mean high pressure. We want to see more of the former.
The mat also records the overall pressure distributed across its surface, in pounds per square inch (PSI). This reading shows how much resistance the sleeper encounters overall. We compare this against the averages weโve collected after reviewing hundreds of beds: 14.58 PSI for side sleepers and 12.43 PSI for back sleepers.
Our Lightweight Testerโs Evaluation
Our lightweight tester for this mattress was my colleague Riley Otis. She generally enjoyed the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS, noting it had a classic memory foam feel. โThis bed is great if you love the slow-sinking sensation that really molds to your body,โ she said. โIt โremembersโ the shape of my body, which makes for great pressure relief.โ

Riley preferred side sleeping on this mattress, giving it a 4.5/5 rating. Her overall pressure was lower than the average at 10.18 PSI, and her pressure map was mostly blue with only a spot of yellow on her hips and shoulders.
She also rated back sleeping at a 4/5. While comfortable, she liked the bedโs contouring feel better on her side. But for back sleeping, her pressure map was all blue, and her overall pressure was extremely low at 7.86 PSI.
Our Average-weight Testersโ Evaluation
Our average-weight tester had a similar experience to Riley, though she didnโt prefer the bedโs medium-firm feelโshe is a fan of ultra-soft beds. Still, she rated side sleeping at a 4/5, and her pressure map showed no signs of pressure buildup on her hip and shoulder. Her PSI was also quite low at 10.68.
Back sleeping received a lower 3.5/5 rating. Again, her pressure map was mostly blue, but she felt that her spinal alignment was compromised. Her overall pressure was 8.73 PSI, indicating very little pressure.

Sosha Lewis, who handled most of the performance testing for this bed, is an average-weight sleeper herself. Her thoughts on the bedโs comfort for back and side sleepers departed from Riley and our other testerโs opinion.
โIโm not a huge fan of this on my side,โ she said. โIt was too firm to get enough contouring around my shoulders and hips.โ The alignment was โfine,โ but didnโt blow her away.
Sosha had a much better experience on her back. โIt filled in my lower back and gave me a balanced feel,โ she explained. โI think back sleepers should like this more than any other type of sleepers.โ
Our Chief Medical Product Testerโs Evaluation
Finally, we asked our chief medical product tester, Dr. Hannah Habeeb, to give her opinions on how the Black Hybrid XCS will address orthopedic concerns. When she rested on this mattress, she experienced quite a lot of contouring. โYou feel almost weightless on it, and I think itโd be really comfortable for the general population or people with joint pain,โ she said.
Dr. Habeeb also saw the benefits for both back and side sleeping. โWhen resting on my side, I donโt feel any real pressure buildup in my shoulder or hip,โ she explained. But she did note that some side sleepers could feel discomfort: โOver the course of the night, you may see some pressure buildup in the shoulder. I also think sleepers could feel misaligned, since my hips sink a bit lower.โ
โI really like how this bed supports your lower back,โ Dr. Habeeb added. โItโs filling in that gap and curve, which I really like. The mix of support and contouring should work well for these sleepers.โ
But Dr. Habeeb did think the bed could be a problem for folks with back pain. โThis bed could have a bit too much sinkage, which contributes to misalignment. I sometimes felt like my upper body was higher than my lower body,โ she explained.
In the absence of a heavyweight tester, we asked Dr. Habeeb to give her opinion on how well the mattress would work for sleepers over 230 pounds. She ultimately thought they could encounter issues: โIโd be curious how much they would sink down into it. I think they might find themselves bowing into the bed, which could contribute to some misalignment in the back.โ
Edge Support
Strong edge support means the perimeter of the mattress wonโt dip or collapse when bearing weight. This is beneficial for folks who like to spread out on their mattress, or those who rely on the extra stability to get in and out of bed. We also see strong edges as a sign of a mattress that wonโt sag with repeated useโif the edges of the bed stay rigid under stress, the rest of the mattress should follow suit.
We test edge support in two ways. Our first test is our more subjective evaluation, where we sit and lie down at the perimeter, judging how secure we feel in each position.
When Sosha sat down on the edge of the Black Hybrid XCS, her only difficulty was with the bedโs height. โIโm only 5โ4, so I had to sit very close to the edge for my feet to be on the ground. This gave me very little surface area to rest on. I felt more like I was leaning on the bed than sitting on it,โ she explained.
But as for sinking or sliding, she felt nothing untoward. โThere was very little sinkage when I scooted back some,โ she said. She gave this part of the test a 5/5.
Next, Sosha switched to lying down along the edge of the mattress. She didnโt feel any difference between each sleeping position, calling it โsafe and secureโ all around. This โdreamy edge supportโ earned another 5/5 rating.

Our more objective test is our weighted edge support test. We stack weight plates at the very edge of the bed, incrementally increasing the weight to mimic what it would feel like for a lightweight, average-weight, or heavyweight sleeper sitting on the edge. Then we use a tape measure to record how far the bed sinks.
Compared with Soshaโs 5-star ratings, the weighted edge support test lagged slightly behind. We recorded 3.5โณ of sinkage for our lightweight sleeper, 4.5โณ for average-weight, and 5.5โณ for heavyweight. These earned ratings of 4/5, 4/5, and 3/5, respectively.
The combined results of these tests led to a 4.2/5 overall edge support score for the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS. Most sleepers should feel steady and secure at the perimeter of this bed.
Cooling
Overheating every night? Consider investing in a cooling mattress. These beds contain cooling features like gel memory foam, fancy covers, and aerated layers to keep air flowing through a mattress. The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS has some of this temperature-regulating tech, but we wanted to make sure it delivers.
To test cooling, we use a thermal gun to measure the increase in surface temperature after resting on a mattress. We take two readings: one before anyone has gotten into the mattress, and a second after our tester has taken a seven-minute nap. The increase shows how much (or little) heat the bed should hold onto throughout the night. Lower numbers mean better cooling.
For the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS, my colleague Sosha recorded an initial temperature of 71.7 degrees, which then increased to 80.8 degrees. This 9.1-degree increase is quite large, corresponding with a 3.5/5 rating for temperature regulation.

โI didnโt notice it heating up, but the temp gun seems to disagree with me,โ Sosha protested. โIt certainly wasnโt cool to the touch, but I didnโt feel overly warm.โ Still, she was hesitant to recommend it to hot sleepers, โbecause the foams seem to trap heat.โ

| 4-6 degree change | 4.5/5 |

Motion Isolation
Motion isolation refers to how well a bed absorbs movement before it travels across the surface. Light sleepers who share a bed will want a mattress with excellent motion isolation, as it helps ensure they sleep undisturbed.
The Beautyrest Black Hybrix XCS earned an impressive 5/5 rating for motion isolation, scoring perfectly in both our water glass and partner tests. This marks it as a great mattress for couples.
As for how it got these results, let me explain: When Sosha placed a glass of water on one side of the bed and moved around on the other, the water inside barely moved.

โThere was only a slight ripple when I aggressively sat down,โ she said. โThe foams just soak up all the motion. Even very light sleepers like me should be dandy in this bed.โ
When her fellow tester hopped into bed alongside her for the partner test, Sosha was similarly impressed. โI could barely feel my partner,โ she said. โThis mattress wasnโt the one for me in a few ways, but when it comes to motion isolation, it canโt be beat.โ
Response
A responsive mattress will bounce back into shape when you press down or put weight on it. This makes for better ease of movement, as you wonโt feel โstuckโ in the bedโs surface. Combination sleepers and sexually active folks can both benefit from a responsive mattress.
To test responsiveness, Sosha moved around on top of the mattress to gauge how easy it felt. โWith all the thick foam, I was expecting a doughy feeling,โ she said. โSo, color me surprised when I got on it and found it easy to roll around. The bed is a little firmer than medium-firm and I think that helped me turn over more easily than I was expecting.โ
Sosha noted that she didnโt feel any bounce-back from the springs themselves, since they were so covered by the foam. โThe ease of switching positions came from the firmer foam,โ she explained. So, she rated responsiveness at a 4/5.
While Sosha was relatively satisfied with the bedโs responsiveness, Dr. Hannah Habeeb noted it could pose an issue for folks with limited mobility. โThe foams put your body in a hole since it doesnโt rise back very quickly, so I could see some difficulty transitioning yourself out of bed.โ she explained.
Sinkage: Moderate
The term โsinkageโ may have a negative connotation, but for a mattress, it comes down to your personal preference. Deep sinkage means youโll feel hugged and cradled by your mattress, whereas light sinkage means youโll feel lifted on the surface. Moderate sinkage strikes a balance between the two.

To measure sinkage, we place a kettlebell on the surface of the mattress, then use a ruler to record how far the bed dips. For the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS, we measured 3.25โณ of sinkage. This falls into the โmoderateโ category mentioned above, and makes sense with the bedโs medium-firm feel.
| Light Sinkage | 0-2.5โ |
| Moderate Sinkage | 2.6-4โ |
| Deep Sinkage | 4+โ |
Bounce: High
A bouncy mattress makes movement less taxing during sleep or sex. Some folks might also just have a preference for a buoyant bed, like yours truly. To gauge a mattressโs bounce, we measure how high a ball bounces when dropped from 6 feet above the mattress.

For the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS, we recorded a bounce height of 20โ. This is considered high, about 2โณ or 3โณ higher than what we see on average.
| Low Bounce | 12โ or less |
| Moderate Bounce | 12โ-18โ |
| High Bounce | 18โ or more |
Noise
A squeaky or creaky mattress can make it difficult to fall asleep. The good news is that the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS is virtually silent, earning a 5/5 noise score. As Sosha put it, โIt kind of looks like a ninja, and it moves like a ninjaโsuper quiet.โ
Sex
The best mattresses for sex are responsive, have strong edges, and operate quietly. This ensures that you can move around easily, make full use of the bedโs surface area, and get to the main event without any distractions.
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS performed admirably in all of these areas, scoring a 4/5 or higher in each. Sexually active folks should have a grand old time on this mattress and shouldnโt encounter any issues.
Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Customer Experience Scores
Some folks are satisfied with a well-performing mattress that ticks all their boxes. But we like to take a look at the entire mattress purchase and setup. This gives us an idea of how consumers will be impacted by the companyโs policies and practices.
Trial Period
Since most online mattresses canโt be touched or tested before purchase, many brands offer whatโs called a sleep trial. Itโs an at-home trial period that starts the moment the bed arrives at your door. You often get a few months to try out the mattress for yourself, then decide if itโs right for you. So long as you initiate a return within the allotted timeframe, youโll receive a full refund.
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS comes with a 100-night sleep trial. While itโs fairly standard, 100 nights is on the lower side. Weโve seen trials that last as long as a full year, and with a bed that costs this much, we would like people to have more time to make up their minds. For this reason, we gave the Black Hybrid XCS a trial score of 3.5/5.
Warranty
A mattress warranty covers your mattress in the event of defects or flaws caused by the manufacturing process. Aside from peace of mind, we view it as a preview of how long your bed can be expected to last. The lifespan of most beds is between 7 and 10 years, so warranties of this length are common.
Thatโs the case for the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS. It comes with a 10-year limited warranty. Since itโs pretty standard (and not the most generous weโve seen), we gave it another 3.5/5 rating.
Unboxing and Delivery
The majority of beds purchased online are whatโs called bed-in-a-box mattresses. As the name implies, the mattress arrives at your door compressed in a box. It makes setup and transportation easier, but some folks might not want to do the heavy lifting themselves. Youโll also have to wait for the mattress to expand, and you might contend with some off-gassing (that โnew mattressโ smell).
Beautyrest Black mattresses come with free white glove delivery and old mattress removal. A team will come to your house to set up your mattress and take away your previous one. The best part is that you can use your mattress immediately, since it was never compressed.
We took advantage of this service when we tested this mattress. It arrived at our studio without a hitch. You may have to coordinate a delivery time with the movers, but otherwise, it should be a seamless experience.
However, we would like to note that this bed is quite heavy and fairly hard to manuever around. Please keep this in mind if you ever need to move it on your own.
Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Construction
Now letโs take a look at whatโs inside the Beautyrest Black XCS Hybrid.
Mattress Height & Weight
The height and weight of your Beautyrest Black Hybrix XCS will depend on which series you choose. For example, the Medium Series Three modelโwhich we triedโwas 14.5โณ tall. The Series Four and Series Five are 14.75โณ and 15โณ tall respectively.
The weight depends on the mattress size as well. A queen-size will weigh between 145 and nearly 200 lbs.
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS also comes in โsplit headโ sizes, which are compatible with adjustable bases. The upper half of the mattress is split in two, which allows you to move each side of the mattress head independently.
Materials
This bed contains both foam and coils in its hybrid construction.
Layers

Note: The following construction details are for the Medium Series Three model of the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS.
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS starts out with a plush, contouring cover with cooling fabric. The top of this bed is flatโit doesnโt feature a pillow top.
Underneath, the comfort layers contain high-density memory foam of varying firmnesses and thickness. They provide plenty of cushioning for your body to ease into. The topmost layer also contains BlackICE Mass Cooling Technology, developed by Beautyrest to boost cooling by 30%.
The bulk of the bedโs support comes from its innerspring unit. It contains hundreds of individually wrapped coils, dubbed Triple-Stranded Pocketed Coil Technology by Beautyrest. These coils move independently, reducing the risk of motion transfer while supporting your body.
How To Try and Buy The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Mattress
You search for a showroom to try out the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS on the brandโs store locator. Theyโre available at major retailers like Macyโs or Ashley Furniture. However, not everyone has the time to go in-person and deal with pushy salespeople or markups.
In my humble opinion, the best way to try out the Black Hybrid XCS is to take advantage of the 100-night sleep trial. It comes with free white-glove delivery, so no setup is required. You can test the bed long-term in your home and decide if itโs right for you. Simmons Beautyrest offers free returns and full refundsโjust make sure you initiate a return before the 100-night period is up.

Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS vs. DreamCloud
As a luxury mattress, the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS costs a good bit. Itโs also one of the brandโs higher-tier models, which further drives up the price. If youโre after a mattress that you can get for less than $1,000, look no further than the DreamCloud.
The DreamCloud brings the luxury feel without the exorbitant price. It boasts a thick pillow top and responsive coils, as well as a super-supportive, lifted feel that contrasts with the Beautyrestโs contouring. The Black Hybrid XCS should be the favorite for couples, while combination sleepers will love how easy it is to move on the DreamCloud mattress.

Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS vs. Saatva Classic
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS starts out at over $3,000โand thatโs for a twin XL. While itโs certainly luxurious, itโs still one of the more expensive beds weโve tried. Maybe youโre after a luxury mattress in the $2,000 ballpark. Let me introduce you to the Saatva Classic.
This is currently the bed I sleep on. It has a classic innerspring feel: plenty of bounce with super-sturdy edge support. Itโs also got firm support for both stomach sleepers (like yours truly) and heavyweight sleepers. The one downside to the Saatva is its abysmal motion isolation. The Beautyrest has that beat with its 5/5 score, so it should be an easy favorite for light sleepers who share the bed.

Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS vs. WinkBed Plus
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS has a medium-firm feel thatโs a hit with average-weight and lightweight sleepers alike. However, sleepers over 230 pounds are likely to sink too far into this mattress, causing discomfort. For a bed thatโs designed specifically for plus-size sleepers, I recommend the WinkBed Plus.
The WinkBed Plus is another hybrid mattress, featuring industrial-strength coils and a dense pillow top. Itโs firmer than the Black Hybrid XCS, making it the better choice for stomach sleepers. You wonโt sink deeply into the WinkBed, either. The Beautyrest mattress provides closer to the classic memory foam feel, if thatโs your drift. The WinkBed Plus did perform better in our cooling test, which should appeal to hot sleepers over 230 pounds.

Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS Mattress FAQs
Is the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS a good mattress?
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS is a good mattress for folks who love hybrids with a contouring feel. This bed features plush, cushioning foams and robust support that make it great for back sleepers. Itโs also fairly responsive while still isolating motion, a positive for sexually active couples. It is on the expensive side, so it may not be a good bed for those on a budget.
What is the difference between Beautyrest Black and Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS?
The Beautyrest Black is an innerspring mattress that features a similar look and construction. However, the Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS is more expensive, more plush, and excels in a few more categoriesโnamely, edge support. The Beautyrest Black is firmer and better suited to sleepers who need added back support. You can read more in our Beautyrest Black mattress review.
What are the negatives of a hybrid mattress?
Hybrid mattresses are great in many ways, but there are some cons. For one, theyโre more expensive than all-foam beds. Because they contain coils, they might not offer the best motion isolation. Coils are also more prone to squeaking or creaking as the mattress ages.
What is the lifespan of a Beautyrest Black mattress?
Most Beautyrest Black mattresses, including the Black Hybrid XCS, should last about 7 to 10 years. Youโre also covered by the brandโs 10-year limited warranty.
