If youโ€™re shopping for a luxury hybrid mattress to upgrade your sleep setup, youโ€™ve likely encountered the Saatva and WinkBed on your journey to better rest. Both brands are known for hotel-like comfort, sturdy support, and high-quality materials, but which one is a better fit for your needs?

Since starting in 2015, the Mattress Clarity team has tested over 500 mattresses (including the Saatva and WinkBed) and has helped more than 43,000 readers find a new mattress.

For this comparison, our team got hands-on with each bed in our studio, evaluating everything from firmness and motion isolation to edge support and responsiveness.

See how the two models compare below.

Should You Choose the Saatva or WinkBed?

Angled view of a WinkBed mattress on top of a Saatva Classic mattress

While both models are technically hybrid mattresses, the Saatva has two layers of innerspring coils instead of one. This dual-coil-layer construction makes the Saatva one of the best mattresses for combination sleepers seeking a responsive surface to make movement easier. On the other hand, our testers found that the WinkBed was better at isolating motion, making it a better option for couples with restless partners.

Trying the Saatva and the WinkBed Back-to-Back

Mattress expert Riley Otis stacked these models against each other (literally and figuratively) in our studio to make a direct comparison. Despite both beds having a similar hybrid construction, Riley noted a handful of significant differences between the two mattresses.

โ€œAlthough they both feel similar in firmness, the Saatva Classicโ€™s Euro top is slightly loftier than the WinkBedโ€™s Euro top,โ€ Riley said. โ€œIt offers a bit more cushioning around the hips and shoulders when side sleeping. The pressure relief wasnโ€™t necessarily bad on the WinkBed, as it does have a decent amount of foam. That being said, both mattresses were super supportive, both at the center and along the edge.โ€

Key Differences Between the Saatva and WinkBed

During testing, we found that the real differentiator between the Saatva and WinkBed was the additional coil layer in the Saatva. As a result, the Saatva is better at relieving pressure for back and stomach sleepers, thanks to its robust support system. On the other hand, the WinkBed does a better job of preventing movement from rippling across the bedโ€™s surface.

The WinkBed Isolates Motion Better

The only category in which the Saatva performed poorly during testing was motion isolation (2.7/5). To no oneโ€™s surprise, its coil-on-coil construction made the Saatva feel like a springboard. While it is incredibly easy to maneuver on the surface, we would not recommend it for couples or folks who share their bed with a pet. These sleepers will likely be disturbed by their partnerโ€™s movements.

While some movement was noticeable on the WinkBed, it wasnโ€™t nearly as bad. Motion transfer shouldnโ€™t be a concern for most sleepers on the WinkBed, unless theyโ€™re particularly sensitive to movement. Our testers gave the WinkBed a motion isolation score of 3.7 stars.

โ€œThe WinkBedโ€™s performance during the motion isolation test was a pleasant surprise,โ€ said mattress tester Melanie Kassel. โ€œThe foam in the pillow top absorbed a lot of motion. I could feel my fellow mattress testerโ€™s movement very slightly on my side of the bed. I donโ€™t think it would have been enough to wake me up.โ€

The Saatva Is More Supportive

There are very few mattresses that can compete with the next-level support of the Saatva Classic. During testing, we gave the Saatva a perfect 5-star edge support score because of its secure feel that extends from corner to corner.

โ€œI can actually notice the reinforced edges when I sit down, which I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve experienced on any other bed,โ€ said mattress tester Livvi DiCicco. โ€œGetting in and out of bed is almost like sitting on a table. Thereโ€™s no sinkage or slipping that I can notice, a sign of amazing edge support. Iโ€™d say that older adults and those with mobility concerns would be set on this bed.โ€

While the WinkBed also provides solid edge support (4.4/5), the Saatva is the best choice for sleepers who rely on a strong perimeter to stand up in the morning.

The Saatva Relieves More Pressure

The Saatva also earned an impressive overall pressure relief score (4.5 stars) during our testing. The additional support provided by the coils in its construction provides stomach and back sleepers with more lift for their lower bodies. This elevation helps keep the spine in a neutral position, which can help ease tension.

โ€œI can feel the Saatva providing really great contouring at my hips and lower back while also giving me a great level of support,โ€ said Dr. Hannah Habeeb, our chief medical product tester and licensed physical therapist. โ€œIn the back sleeping position, my spine feels aligned, and my lumbar region is supported. My upper back also feels really cushioned, and Iโ€™m not feeling any pain anywhere.โ€

The WinkBed only scored a 3.8/5 in this category, as some of our testers found that they sank further into the memory foam than they would have liked. Excessive sinkage over time can cause pressure buildup.

Both mattresses have a soft pillow top, making them a solid choice for most side sleepers. That said, the Saatva might be too firm for lightweight side sleepers and those with existing joint pain.

Similarities Between the Saatva and WinkBed

Despite their key differences, the Saatva and WinkBed are two hybrid models that share many similarities. Learn more about what the two have in common below.

Both Are Hybrid Models

While the WinkBed is slightly softer than the Saatva Classic, neither mattress delivers that slow-sinking, traditional memory foam feel. Both are hybrid mattresses that combine an innerspring coil system with memory foam layers to balance support and cushioning.

That said, the Saatva has a more traditional innerspring feel overall, which is why you may see it categorized as an innerspring mattress elsewhere.

Both Have Strong Cooling

The Saatva and the WinkBed both performed well in our cooling tests, as the steel coils both facilitate airflow and temperature regulation. Our mattress testers gave both models a 4/5 in the cooling category, meaning hot sleepers should remain cool and comfortable through the night.

Neither Model Is Great for Adjustable Bases

At 11.5 and 13.5 inches thick, respectively, both the Saatva and WinkBed were somewhat difficult to use on the adjustable base in our studio. During testing, our mattress experts noticed that neither bed conformed especially well to certain positions and settings.

In general, all-foam memory foam mattresses tend to be more malleable and better suited for adjustable bases.

Which Bed Is Better For Your Body Type?

Lightweight Sleepers (Up to 130 lbs)

In most scenarios, the WinkBed is a better option for lightweight sleepers because its softer surface (6.5/10 on our firmness scale) provides more sinkage. Lightweight side sleepers, in particular, should find that the WinkBed offers more cushioning and contouring around common pressure points, such as their hips and elbows.

Since the Saatva is a firm mattress (7.5/10 on our firmness scale), itโ€™s not a great fit for side sleepers in this body weight category. However, back and stomach sleepers should find plenty of support on the Saatva.

Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)

Both mattresses are an excellent fit for average-weight sleepers. Back sleepers should find plenty of lift from the pocketed coils in each model to maintain neutral spinal alignment.

The Saatva will likely have a slight edge among average-weight stomach sleepers, thanks to its additional layer of coils. Stomach sleepersโ€™ hips tend to sink more, so the extra support helps them stay in a healthy position.

Conversely, side sleepers will fare better on the WinkBed, thanks to its softer surface and gentle cushioning around the shoulders and hips.

Heavyweight Sleepers (230 lbs and Up)

Sleepers with bigger bodies benefit from more support, making the Saatva Classic the clear winner for this weight category. Back and stomach sleepers in this weight category should get ample support from the reinforced innerspring coils, while side sleepers will sink in just enough into the Euro pillow top cover to get the gentle contouring they need in their hips and shoulders.
