Plushbeds Goose Down Pillow Review Overview

Plushbeds is known for making, well, plush-feeling beds! We’ve reviewed the Plushbeds Botanical Bliss mattress before, but Plushbeds makes a handful of other sleep products, too.

The brand offers three different kinds of pillows, but this review will focus on the down pillow. Here’s a brief overview of who will enjoy the down feather pillow, and who needs to consider something else:

Who Might Like the Plushbeds White Goose Down Pillow?

  • Fans of down pillows
  • Sleepers of all sleeping positions
  • Anyone who wants a machine-washable down pillow

Who Might Not Like the Plushbeds Goose Down Pillow?

  • Shoppers on a budget
  • Fans of slow-moving memory foam pillows
  • People who prefer to use animal-free down alternatives

Plushbeds Goose Down Pillow Firmness and Feel

Firmness and feel are two important categories when picking a new pillow. Let’s talk about how the Plushbeds pillow feels.

How Firm is Plushbeds Goose Down Pillow?

Plushbeds offers the goose down pillow in two firmness options: medium-firm and firm. For this review, I received the medium-firm option. And for a down feather pillow, I’d say this was more medium-firm than other down pillows I’ve encountered, but it still felt fairly soft and plush. This is typical for a down pillow.

Overall, you’re not going to bottom out of this pillow like you could a softer down pillow.

Sleeping on the Plushbeds Goose Down Pillow

Personally, I prefer more medium to firm memory foam pillows, so using down pillows is always a different experience for me. I tested the medium-firm option, and as a side sleeper, this pillow felt fairly comfortable. But ultimately, as a heavier person, I think I would need the firm option for side sleeping, as I found my head sinking too far into the pillow.

Moving to my back, I felt very comfortable using this pillow. I was able to sink into the cushiony feel of the down, but I still felt some support. This pillow did a good job of keeping my head and neck in a neutral alignment.

Moving over to my stomach, I felt really comfortable. Down pillows deflate when you use them, and you can get them low and flat, which is ideal for stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers will want to stick with the medium option, as the firm pillow might not deflate as much. But overall, this is a very comfortable pillow to use for stomach sleeping.

30-60 Min Nap

When it came time to nap, I decided to try it out with my natural sleeping position: my side. While I still think I needed the firm option, the medium-firm did a decent job of offering support for a quick nap. But over time, I’d be worried about this pillow falling too flat to offer good neck support while sleeping on my side.

I found myself switching to my stomach, which felt much more comfortable. And though down can be an insulator, the organic cotton cover on the outside felt soft, smooth, and cool. Cotton is very breathable, so I didn’t find myself overheating while napping with this pillow.

What does the Plushbeds Goose Down Pillow Feel Like?

Because this pillow features different firmness levels, each version may feel differently. For the medium-firm option I had, the goose feathers made it feel very plush, cushiony, and soft.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230lb

Tthe medium-firm option should work well for all sleeping positions if you’re an average weight person. I’d recommend this pillow mostly for back and stomach sleepers. This is because down can deflate, and back and stomach sleepers should be able to compress the pillow enough to find comfort, but still get enough support.

If you’re a side sleeper with broad shoulders, the firm option would be the better choice. However, if you’re not convinced a down pillow can offer enough support for side sleeping, going with a firm memory foam or latex pillow would be a better option.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lb

Heavyweight side and back sleepers should consider getting the firm option to provide support and keep you from bottoming out while you sleep. The medium-firm option will work best for heavier stomach sleepers because they’ll be able to compress the pillow enough to get it low and flat.

However, this isn’t a pillow I would immediately recommend to my fellow heavyweight sleepers out there. Look at our list of the best firm pillows for more supportive options.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lb

Lightweight sleepers of all three sleeping positions will find everything they need in the medium-firm version. You won’t compress the down as much as heavier bodied individuals will, so the Plushbeds Goose Down Pillow should offer good comfort and support.

Plushbeds Goose Down Pillow Construction

Let’s talk about the materials that make up the Plushbeds White Goose Down pillow.

The Plushbeds Goose Down pillow features a cotton sateen cover that has a thread count of 330. The sateen weave makes this feel very soft and smooth. With a lower thread count of 330, it makes the cover very breathable.

As the name suggests, Plushbeds uses a high-quality, responsibly sourced European white goose down fill for this pillow. The down has been Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified, meaning that the down is sourced in a responsible and ethical manner.

The two popular types of down to use in down pillows are goose and duck down. Goose down feels much fluffier and when made into clusters, gives it a high fill power, which relates to how well the pillow retains heat and stays nice and fluffy.

Be sure to read our full article on understanding fill power to get the rundown!

There are different sizes and firmness options to this pillow, so the weight will range from about 2 to 2.9 lb.

Loft refers to the height of a pillow. Down pillows can be very lofty when fluffed, but you’re more than likely going to push all that air out when you use it.

The Plushbeds Goose Down pillow is roughly 5” tall when fluffed to its full height.

Plushbeds Goose Down Pillow Performance

We’ve gone over firmness, feel, and how this pillow performs in the three sleeping positions. Now let’s cover some other key performance considerations.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Plushbeds Goose Down pillow isn’t designed to be a cooling pillow. However, down is naturally temperature regulating and insulating when it needs to be, but will allow for airflow as well.

Cotton is a very breathable material, so the cover won’t trap heat either. Overall, it’s a decent option for hot sleepers. But if you overheat quickly, or are on the hunt for a cooling pillow, we’ve got a list of the best cooling pillows for you to check out.

The Plushbeds Goose Down pillow is not compressed into its packaging. This means you can use it right away and don’t have to worry about off-gassing or a chemical smell to your pillow.

Care Instructions

Good news! The entire pillow is machine-washable. Here’s what Plushbeds recommends:

  • Wash in a cold water cycle with a mild detergent
  • Tumble dry on the lowest heat setting you have (optional: add in dryer balls)
  • Remove and fluff your pillow as needed.

The goose down pillow is not listed as a hypoallergenic pillow. Down is known to trap allergens in your sleep environment. If you have sensitive allergies, down isn’t the best option to go with. Though you can machine wash this pillow to help combat build up of allergens.

Company Policies

Here’s what you can expect when you make a purchase with Plushbeds for its pillows.

Plushbeds offers a 2-year warranty on the White Goose Down pillow.

Sleep Trial

Plushbeds does not offer a sleep trial for this pillow.

Return Policy

Due to safety and sanitary reasons, Plushbeds does not accept returns on this pillow.

How Does the Plushbeds Goose Down Pillow Compare To Other Pillows?

Doing a little comparison shopping is always a good idea before clicking “check out.” And without a sleep trial to know if it’s the pillow for you, let’s see how the Plushbeds pillow compares to some other pillows on the market.

Plushbeds vs Brooklinen

Down alternative can mean anything, but the most common material for down alternative is polyester microfibers. Brooklinen’s down alternative pillow uses an eco-friendly fill made from recycled plastic bottles. This pillow still feels very soft and plush, but won’t compress as much as the Plushbeds down pillow.

A woman sleeps on her side with the Brooklinen down alternative pillow.

Because of this, side sleepers might feel more support on the Brooklinen pillow. But Plushbeds also offers firmness levels to make it work for more sleeping positions.

If you’re looking to sleep in luxury, the Plushbeds goose down pillow exudes it, while the Brooklinen pillow is a more budget-friendly option.

Plushbeds vs Nolah

Memory foam pillows are all the rage now and can provide amazing contouring and pressure relief. The Nolah Squishy pillow feels exactly as its name suggests. It’s full of chopped memory foam cubes that will mold to your body.

You also have the option to remove the memory foam fill to get a lower loft or different feel. The Plushbeds down pillow feels much softer and plush. It isn’t adjustable but you do have firmness options.

Nolah Squishy Pillow Foam Filling

But if you’re trying to be more eco-friendly, the Plushbeds pillow has many certifications proving so. But this pillow is rather pricey for just one pillow. The Nolah Squishy pillow isn’t cheap, but it’s far less expensive than the Plushbeds pillow. Also, it comes in a 2-pack, so the price you pay is for two pillows.

Let’s answer some of the most frequently asked questions about Plushbeds and its down pillows.

Are goose down pillows good for neck pain?

Down pillows offer a great amount of plush comfort, but they aren’t going to be the first choice for people dealing with neck pain. This is because they deflate when you rest your head on them. This can cause your head and neck to crane downward which is a recipe for neck pain.

If you’re dealing with neck pain, don’t stress. We’ve compiled a list of the best pillows for neck pain!

Why are goose down pillows so expensive?

Down pillows tend to be a luxury these days. Be it duck down or goose down, down is still an animal product, which will always be more expensive than synthetic or plant based products. Plushbeds also went the extra mile to source goose down that has been Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified.

This certification is rather intensive to make sure that before collecting the down, the geese need to be guaranteed to be raised and treated ethically.

How often should you replace a goose down pillow?

Down or down blend pillows are more durable than synthetic down alternative pillows. With good care, they can last you anywhere from around one to three years. And when down pillows can be machine washed, this can help by removing allergens, dust, and dirt that collect. And when you use a pillowcase, this can help make it last longer as well.
