To some, adjustable bed frames might sound like an expensive gimmick. But did you know that studies have shown adjustable bases can improve sleep quality? These frames allow you to adjust the position of your head and feet so you can sleep comfortably, taking the pressure off problem areas—or just making it easier to watch TV or read before you finally close your eyes. Some even feature presets for zero gravity, anti-snoring technology, massage options, USB charging, underbed lighting, and more.
With all that to consider, and a seemingly infinite number of brands on the market, you might feel overwhelmed by options. Thankfully, we’ve tested more than 200 sleep accessories over our years of operation and helped more than 35,000 people find their new bed in 2024 (with 5,919 of them in 2024 alone)—so we’re happy to do the heavy lifting for you. With input from our testers and Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta (MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM), we devised this list of our top picks for the best adjustable bed frames, based on their quality, performance, and value.
Our Verdict: What’s the Best Adjustable Bed?
The Nectar Adjustable Base is one of our top adjustable bases. It’s an affordable option that should work for a variety of folks looking to upgrade their mattress on a budget. It’s easy to set up and offers multiple positions on its wireless remote. For an extra $100, you can upgrade to Nectar’s “Comfort Premier” model for extra features like massage options and USB charging.
When testing adjustable bases, we look at each model’s construction, performance, and company policy. Here’s what we zoned in on when choosing the best of the best:
Durability – Durability is essential for adjustable beds. After all, they can be expensive, so we looked for products that should make for excellent long-term investments. We paid attention to the overall construction and quality of materials. These are naturally an indicator of an adjustable frame’s lifespan.
Features – Adjustable bases can come with the most basic performance features (like independent head and food adjustment) or more specialized luxurious massage. We did our best to gather a variety of options for those looking to simply elevate their sleeping experience, folks looking to address concerns like sleep apnea or acid reflux, and the luxury shoppers wanting the royal treatment from their adjustable bed.
Price – Your final decision might come down to the price of the adjustable bed. While these bases can go for thousands of dollars, there are some high-quality options out there for a fair price. We’ll be sure to note which are especially great deals, though we consider all the beds here to be good values.
The Nectar Adjustable Bed Frame offers customizable comfort with features like head and foot elevation, massage settings, and USB ports, all controllable via remote or app.
Multiple settings controllable by wireless remote or phone app
Often discounted throughout the year
Cons
Not wall-hugging, which may affect bedside table access
No headboard or headboard brackets
The Nectar Adjustable Base has a simple but effective design that will appeal to shoppers who don’t need a ton of bells and whistles. Because of this simple design, the Nectar is priced much lower than many of its competitors. You won’t find fancy massage functions, Bluetooth speakers, or color-changing LED lights in this base, but if all you’re after is a reliable base that adjusts to your preferences, this might be the product for you.
My fellow tester Marten assembled this adjustable base when it arrived in the studio. He called it “very easy to set up,” which should appeal to folks who struggle with multi-step IKEA furniture (yours truly). After completing the woe-free setup and plugging it into an outlet, you can get right into reaping the benefits. ”With this base, you’re going to get some massage features and some great presets,” Marten said.
Of all the high-end features, Marten appreciated the bed’s zero-gravity position the most. “It’s going to raise your head and your feet just the right amount to give you kind of a weightless feeling,” he explained. This can help folks who are looking for pressure relief on the knees, hips, and shoulders, common pressure points if you’re a back or side sleeper, as you can adjust until you don’t feel discomfort building in these areas. Marten also recommended it for older adults, adding, “This can help with circulation too.”
In addition to zero gravity, other presets on the wireless remote include anti-snore, TV (with the head of the bed raised), and the option to save up to three preferred positions. The massage function also has multiple options built in, including three distinct areas, multiple modes, and settings for time limits. For a sub-$1,000 pricepoint, it’s impressive that Nectar manages to pack so much customization into this base, one of the best value adjustable bases we’ve seen.
This base also comes with a 60-night trial, a rarity for sleep accessories, as well as a two-year limited warranty. This warranty is a little short since we expect this base to last beyond two years.
The Saatva Adjustable Base should have you sleeping in the lap of luxury with features like head and foot elevation, massage settings, and under-bed lighting—as well as free white-glove delivery.
Older adults who want the best adjustable bed for them should consider the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus; it’s a high-end base with excellent adjustability. An adjustable bed like this one can help relieve pressure on sensitive joints and keep your back and legs properly elevated. And, even though we found the Saatva Adjustable Base easy to set up, it actually comes with white glove delivery. That means professionals will come and set it up for you, eliminating a lot of the hassle for older folks.
Our testers appreciated the range of adjustability that came with this base, which should help older folks find their favorite position. “The head and foot areas rise up pretty far, giving you really good elevation to help you with circulation and to sit up in bed to watch TV, for example,” our tester Jordan said. The bed also features what Jordan calls “awesome massage features,” including full-body wave massage and three different speeds, great for older adults looking for relief from aches and pains. These can be controlled via the wireless remote or an app on your phone.
Another feature older folks (of any age) might appreciate is the under-bed lighting. Our tester found that it should “make it that much easier to find your way to the bathroom at night,” and should keep you from bumping into the bed when you return—something I deal with aplenty, thanks to blackout curtains. There’s also charging ports along the side of the bed to plug in any devices you want to have within easy reach.
The base also has what we call “wall-hugging” to make reaching for your phone or a glass of water easy. When my fellow tester Marten Carlson raised the head of the bed fully, the entire top portion remained relatively flush to the wall behind the headboard, rather than moving forward and therefore away from it. This feature keeps you close to your nightstand, so older adults should appreciate not having to stretch uncomfortably.
The main drawback that might deter adjustable base shoppers is the price. Even though we’d consider the price fair for all you get, this base still costs more than $1,000 for a queen size, and even more for a larger mattress. You can downgrade to the regular Saatva Adjustable Base if you want to cut costs, but just note you’ll lose some features like anti-snore, zero gravity, charging ports, and full-body massage.
The DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame brings all the features you’d want in an adjustable bed (massage, head and foot elevation, presets, etc.) at a reasonable price and with 2 months to try it out.
Heavier sleepers need a firm bed and durable base of support to prevent them from sinking into it and disrupting their spine’s alignment. The DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame is built with 100-percent solid steel that can safely support upward of 750 pounds. In addition to durability, the frame is quite luxurious and modern. Despite the complex features of the frame, DreamCloud attests that the setup is simple, requiring no tools at all.
As mentioned, the DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame is made with 100-percent solid steel, ensuring a durable and sturdy foundation for heavier sleepers. The frame should comfortably fit both folks with bigger bodies and hefty mattresses. It should last a long time, but I’ll note that the brand only offers a two-year warranty with this frame. However, you can take full advantage of the two-month-long sleep trial before you commit. This is a bonus, as some brands don’t offer refunds at all.
When it comes to features, this frame offers three quiet massage options with varying intensity, multiple preset positions (such as zero gravity, TV mode, and anti-snoring), and two USB ports built on each side for convenient device use (four in total). You can control the settings via wireless remote or an app on your smartphone. Notably, if you’re sharing the bed with your partner, each sleeper can enjoy these features separately from the other with the available split king design frame.
Customers in the frame’s reviews report that they have little concern about the base being able to bear their weight. One sleeper also commented that they woke up pain-free for the first time in months thanks to the bed’s adjustability. A self-described larger sleeper was impressed with the base’s support and customizability, saying, “I would definitely recommend this to friends and family alike.”
Most customer complaints refer to this adjustable base having issues like their mattress sliding off the base, the massage feature malfunctioning, or other technical problems with the remote or wall plug-in. They lament that it’s difficult to contact customer service, especially when these problems occur outside the trial period and warranty, which can be frustrating for consumers.
If you want an adjustable base with a longer warranty, check out Nolah’s Smart Adjustable Base, which is covered for 10 years.
The Nolah Adjustable Base with Wall Glide ensures you stay close to your nightstand as you enjoy its adjustable features, which are backed by a 10-year warranty.
If you’re looking for an out-of-this-world luxury option, we recommend the Nolah Smart Adjustable Base. It allows you to adjust both your head and feet, all at the push of a button. You can even use your voice to control it. There are a number of other nifty features: massage settings, USB charging ports, an anti-snoring setting, and more.
My fellow tester Marten Carlson was really impressed by the “sci-fi” nature of this adjustable base. “It has voice command, something you don’t often see with bases like this,” he explained. Simply give commands like “raise feet,” or “lower head,” and the base will do either for about five seconds before stopping. Marten found that it was “super fun to use and super effective.” This feature really sets it apart from the other bases on this list, which are all only controllable by remote or app (which is also true of the Nolah).
Beyond the high-end edge, the base features a number of position settings we’d expect to see in any adjustable base and excels here, too. “There’s a zero-gravity setting that assists with pain relief and spinal alignment,” Marten noted. He also appreciated the luxurious massage offered by this bed, noting the different intensities offered and the wave function. He claimed that “it’s super, super relaxing to lie on this base.”
Marten was also impressed by the base’s wall-hugging ability, which refers to whether or not the base will keep you in line with your nightstand, rather than moving forward and away from it. You should be able to reach everything on your nightstand without having to lean back behind you. And, not unlike the others on this list, this base features USB charging along the side.
What might deter shoppers is the luxurious price for this base. Even on sale, it’s still over $1,000 for a queen size. Marten also found it squeaked when in use, but he noted it wasn’t anything he didn’t normally see from adjustable bases. Just something to keep in mind if you’re particularly sensitive to sound.
The Helix Adjustable Base should satisfy adjustable base shoppers wanting adjustable elevation for Zero-Gravity and anti-snore positions, alongside bonus features like USB charging and dual-massage.
What if you share a bed with a partner who has a different mattress preference? The Helix Adjustable Base could be the solution. Simply get two twin XL bases and place them side by side. That way, each person can choose the Helix mattress that best suits their needs. The Helix Adjustable Base is sold at a value price, but it still offers a swath of nifty features for a great balance of affordability and luxury.
Couples should appreciate the myriad features this adjustable base offers, not just the adjustability itself. The remote has a pre-set button for the famed zero-gravity posture, which is a sleep position that keeps pressure off the knees and lower back. But if you’re still seeking relief, check out the 3-intensity head and foot massage, which our testers found “could be felt even through a thicker mattress.” Our tester Marten Carlson specifically enjoyed the timed setting, as the massage petered out when he took a cat-nap on this base.
The Helix base also has adjustable legs and zero clearance (meaning you can remove the legs to put it directly on your frame), allowing for completely adjustable height, “which makes it a good fit for pretty much any bed frame,” as our testers put it. If you have a split-king bedroom set already, there’s a high chance you won’t have to buy a new one if you’re looking to upgrade with the Helix. (But if you’re interested in a total revamp, Helix has a swath of tailored, quality hybrid mattresses available in the split-king size.)
Two twin XL Helix Adjustable bases will run you about $1,600, which is fairly good value for all that you’re getting. Though there’s no trial period, Helix backs this bed with a 10-year warranty, which is comparable to the longevity of a quality bed. Aside from its plastic legs (a material probably chosen to make it easier to remove/adjust), Marten found that “the Helix looks to be as durable as bases from other competitors.”
The main gripe that Marten had about this base was how it didn’t fall in line with the nightstand, a feature we call “wall-hugging,” which makes it easier to reach for things at your bedside. “The Helix had no wall-hugging to speak of,” he stated plainly. But he didn’t find this too surprising, as the head of the base didn’t go up very far in general. This might be a pain if you want to easily reach your phone during the night, or even if you want a base that’ll prop you up 90 degrees for things like reading or watching TV.
Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Power Base
The Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Power Base has all you could want in an adjustable base, packed into a slim, sleek design that’s geared toward efficiency without causing stress to your beloved mattress.
Our Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta recommends “a mattress that keeps pressure off of your lower back” for folks who are dealing with back pain. A great way to keep pressure off this area is by adding an adjustable base. The Brooklyn Bedding Ascension adjustable base includes a zero-gravity preset to address this concern. The zero-gravity position takes excess strain off the spine by gently easing it into the proper position with small elevations in the head and foot of the bed. This puts less strain on areas like the lower back, possibly contributing to less pain over time. This frame should bring the necessary support alongside a series of luxury features to enhance your hopefully pain-free sleep experience.
My fellow tester Marten praised how the base’s “great massage features, anti-snore position, and zero-gravity function could be a good option for people with back pain.” The base itself can be adjusted to find proper lumbar support outside of the pre-set options, with consumers able to add their own memory position once they find where they’re most comfortable. For optimal results, you might want to pair this base with one of our best mattresses for back pain.
There’s also no more craning your neck or stacking pillows to watch TV or read. After cycling through the standard features that raise the head and foot of the bed, Marten put the base’s tilt function to the test. “It let me incline the top of the head area just a bit,” he said. This should help mitigate not just lower back pain, but any neck pain you might get from that uncomfortable stretch.
Marten also called out the reasonable price of this adjustable base for all that you get with it. “This is great if you want something affordable because it comes from Brooklyn Bedding, a producer of really great sleep products that are affordable but high-quality as well,” he explained. With frequent sales and coupons, a queen-size Ascension base comes in at just under $1,000. Its largest size, a split California king option, is also only around the $1,600 mark.
Where the Ascension had some issues was in its setup. Marten put together many of these bases in order to test them but had a notable struggle with the Ascension. “You have to line up the two sections of the base perfectly or you won’t be able to bolt them together,” he said. There was also a bit of trouble with the wiring, as it wasn’t a simple plug-and-play like most bases. But Marten eventually prevailed, saying, “after some sweating and a few choice words, I got everything plugged in.”
Our testers tried out each of these adjustable bases to evaluate how well they work and who’d they’d work best for, focusing on the areas that we think would be most important to customers.
Durability
Just like any regular old bedframe, you’ll want your adjustable base to last a long time. And since an adjustable base has a lot of moving parts, you should try to pick something truly durable rather than flashy. Thankfully, we evaluated each of these bases for durability by taking a look at the quality of their construction. We looked for sturdy materials like metal or steel, fabrics that won’t rip or tear easily, and the overall seamlessness of the adjusting mechanisms.
We also considered whether the brands offered a multi-year warranty with these beds, a testament to their belief in the longevity of the product and reassurance that you can get compensation if it doesn’t perform up to par.
Features
Adjustable bases can come with a range of features from simple LED under-bed lighting to fancy multi-level massage. We tried to find a variety of options, though you may notice some patterns. Most adjustable bases come with some form of wireless remote control (either a physical one or through a Bluetooth app), often with preset options for common sleeping postures (e.g., zero-gravity, TV, etc.).
Smart bases are a step up from standard adjustable bases. These might have higher-end features like a dedicated sleep-tracking app and AI-controlled automatic adjustments to help you sleep better. However, they also cost quite a bit more. Whether these are a good fit for you depends on how tricked-out you want your night’s rest to be.
The reason you’re purchasing an adjustable base will likely dictate what features you want. Dr. Raj Dasgupta says an adjustable bed can benefit folks with conditions that affect their sleep, like menopause or spinal stenosis; in these cases, pain relief might be a priority, and they might like one with zero-gravity presets. (Of course, check with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns before purchasing an adjustable base.) On the other hand, you may just find yourself watching TV or reading quite a bit in bed, so a simpler design that raises the head of your bed is all you need.
Price
Adjustable bed frames can cost anywhere from approximately $1,000 to more than $3,500, based on how fancy you want to go. It’s helpful to establish your budget up front so you can narrow your search accordingly, or plan out when you’ll buy your base. Aim for holidays like Fourth of July or Memorial Day when most manufacturers are running sales.
But it’s also important not to just pick the cheapest option. We looked for bases that are worth the splurge, and took into account not just the dollar amount but the value for what you’re getting. This includes the features of the base itself, as well as any policies offered by the company.
What Else Is Important When Buying Adjustable Beds?
Aside from considering the categories outlined above, you’ll also want to make sure that you find the perfect adjustable base for your mattress. Here’s some other things I’d recommend considering.
Mattress Compatibility
Some gapping between the bed and the base is to be expected, but it should be mostly resolved when you lie on the bed.
If you already have a functional mattress, make sure it’s compatible with an adjustable bed before you spend money on this type of frame. If you’re not sure, call the mattress manufacturer. Generally, most memory foam mattresses are more likely to work with adjustable bases than those with coils, but we always recommend double-checking.
Likewise, if you’re purchasing a new mattress at the same time as an adjustable frame, make sure the two products are compatible. You may even want to purchase both from the same brand—this could help cut costs if the brand is running a bundle deal.
In a similar vein, some adjustable beds come with headboard brackets that allow you to mount a headboard on the back of the frame, while others don’t (the brackets often come at an extra cost). If having a headboard is important to you, choose a model that will allow you to use the headboard of your choice.
Size
Many adjustable beds only come in select sizes, so it’s critical to make sure the adjustable frame in question can accommodate the size of your mattress. A lot of adjustable bases only come in twin XL, queen, split king, and California king, so you’ll want to make sure your bed works before making that final purchase.
Assembly
Most adjustable beds come nearly fully assembled, while others will require some sweat equity. If you’re short on time or have limited mobility, you may want to look for a model that doesn’t require too much setup or pay for someone to put it together. A select few, like the Saatva Adjustable Base, also come with free assembly by a delivery team.
Weight Limit
The motor-powered nature of adjustable beds means that many of them have a weight limit. You’ll need to tally up the weight of your mattress, your body weight, and the weight of your sleep partner (if applicable) to determine whether an adjustable base can accommodate you. If you’re not certain about the weight of your mattress, contact its manufacturer.
Company Policies
Some adjustable beds come with a trial period, so you can test them out in the comfort of your own home. These trial periods can range from 30 to 100 days, and you can usually return the frame for free if you initiate the return during the trial period. In other cases, the sale of an adjustable bed is final.
If you’re worried about committing to an adjustable bed sight unseen, look for a model that includes a trial period. Otherwise, you may have to rely on the warranty, if there’s one offered. Many adjustable bases have 10-year warranties, similar to that of the typical mattress.
FAQs
Are adjustable bed frames worth it?
If you share the bed with a partner, are an older adult seeking comfort, or just want to upgrade your sleeping experience, an adjustable bed might be worth it. There are plenty of options out there, including some that retail for under $1,000 for a queen size, like the Nectar Adjustable Base.
Do adjustable bed frames ruin mattresses?
If your mattress and adjustable base are compatible, there shouldn’t be any concern about the base “ruining” your mattress. Always be sure to check the mattress manufacturer’s site for any information about turning it into an adjustable bed. The only thing you might note is that since you are scrunching up your bed more than on a traditional frame, you may notice signs of regular use more quickly. If making your mattress last as long as possible is a concern, you may want to consider another option.
How long do adjustable bed frames last?
Most adjustable frames should last about 10 years with proper use, complementary to the typical lifespan of a mattress. If you’re worried about your adjustable base wearing down or breaking over time, consider buying one with a warranty. As an example, Saatva’s Adjustable Base Plus comes with a generous 25-year warranty.
