Early in 2018, Serta updated their line of hybrid mattresses and now offer seven new models. The new hybrid mattresses are a combination of exclusive Serta cooling technology, like the exclusive TempActiv™ gel memory foam and a new advanced coil system – the Serta® Hybrid Coil™ – for support.

There are three higher-end and more luxurious models, one of which is the Blue Fusion 1000 Luxury Firm Pillow Top. This 14.5″ tall mattress has a soft and cushioning pillow top feel but still has supportive foam and a coil system that will help retain that firmer comfort level.

To find out if this could be the best mattress review, we’ve put together everything you need to know in the guide below.

Construction Overview

The mattress is approximately 14.5” high and contains:

Serta iComfort Hybrid Blue Fusion 1000 Luxury Firm Pillow Top

  • FireBlocker® Fiber
  • 1.25” Serta® PillowSoft® HD
  • .5” Serta® Support Foam
  • 2” TempActiv™ Gel Memory Foam
  • 2” Serta® Support Foam
  • Serta® Hybrid Coil Support System Firm with Best Edge® Foam Encasement

Firmness Level

The Blue Fusion 1000 Luxury Firm Pillow Top Mattress sits on the firmer end of the comfort level range.

You Might Want To Consider This If:

  • You want a mattress that is firm, but not too firm. This mattress is firm and supportive but also has a 1.25″ inch of cushioning PillowSoft® HD on top, plus layers of memory foam, to keep it comfortable and contouring.
  • You want a “best of both worlds” mattress. Because this mattress has both innerspring coil and memory foam technology, it’s ideal for people who want a bit of both of those worlds.
  • You like the feel of a pillow-top mattress. Pillow top mattresses have additional padding on the top surface, providing another layer of comfort. It really helps give the mattress a luxurious overall feel.

You Might Not Want To Consider This If:

  • You “run hot” while you sleep. When you’re a hot sleeper, you need all the cooling technology you can get. This mattress, in particular, features just one 2″ layer of TempActiv Gel Memory Foam and no EverCool® Fuze Gel Foam. However, the innerspring coils will help promote airflow within the mattress.
  • You are on a budget. The Blue Fusion 1000 Luxury Firm Pillow Top starts at $1,999 for a Queen sized mattress at full price, making it a sizable investment. If you are thinking about a firmer mattress, you could consider the Blue Fusion 100 Firm, which is similar in comfort level but starts at $1,299 for a Queen at full price.
  • You prefer either a pure memory foam or a pure innerspring coil mattress. The hybrid mattress combines the best of both technologies, but it’s not ideal for people who prefer one or the other. Even though there are layers of memory foam within this mattress, you won’t sink in very deeply because you’ll get support and bounce from the coil system.

Common Praise:

  • Some buyers found that the mattress helped with their lower back pain. “We have slept on this mattress for right around two weeks now, and all of our lower back pain has disappeared,” one reviewer wrote.
  • The mattress is an ideal mix of supportive and cushiony for some buyers. One buyer wrote: “You sink into the foam of the mattress and they are met with the firm coils. It cushions you in the proper places and provides the support your body needs while being nice and soft and comfortable.”
  • The mattress is bouncy and resilient. One buyer wrote: “The mattress is so resilient and is very thick…very soft as well and my kids love to jump on it.”

Common Complaints:

  • The mattress may take a while to break in. One reviewer on the Serta website noted that the mattress “took some getting used to,” but now he feels comfortable after owning the mattress for over two weeks.
  • The mattress may initially give off an unpleasant chemical odor. This is from a process called “off-gassing,” and it’s nothing to worry about. The smell should dissipate naturally, though it might take a couple of days.
  • The mattress is higher than other mattresses. This means you may need to use special “deep pocket” sheets — plus, the height can take some getting used to. One buyer wrote: “The only complaint I have so far is that it is significantly higher than our old mattress and actually resulted in me falling trying to get out of bed one morning. It is just a few inches shorter than my hip height (I’m 5’4”). I definitely was not expecting it to be as high as it is.”

Why Pick The Blue Fusion 1000 Luxury Firm Pillow Top Over Other iComfort Hybrid Models?

The Blue Fusion 1000 Luxury Firm Pillow Top is one of the more luxurious and higher-end models in the Serta iComfort Hybrid series. The extra pillow top is cushioning but you’ll find the support foam pretty quickly, which helps it stay on the firmer side.

Overall

The Serta iComfort Hybrid Blue Fusion 1000 Luxury Firm Pillow Top has FireBlocker® Fiber, one layer of Serta® PillowSoft® HD, two separate layers of Serta® Support Foam, one layer of TempActiv™ Gel Memory Foam, and Serta® Hybrid Coil Support System Firm with Best Edge® Foam Encasement. It is a firm mattress with both innerspring coil and memory foam technology.

It may not fit in everyone’s budget and with a 14.5″ height, shorter or more petite individuals may feel like they’re climbing into the bed. No matter what, you’ll experience a good amount of comfort from the pillowtop cushioning without losing support from the firmer foams and coil system below.
