Nolah Construction
Here’s a description of Nolah’s construction with a picture to illustrate:
- The cover is a thin, soft, breathable viscose.
- A top 2-inch layer of a proprietary “AirFoam” ensures cool sleeping and has been shown in studies to relieve pressure better than standard memory foam.
- A 1-inch layer of latex-like Avena foam below the AirFoam layer gives the mattress good bounce and makes it more responsive. The Avena foam is also highly durable.
- A 7-inch layer of high density poly foam sits at the base, similar to most foam mattresses.

Amerisleep Construction
- Amerisleep has five firmness options with different constructions explained in greater depth here. The mattresses range in thickness from 10 inches for the firmest option, the AS1, to 14 inches thick for the softest option, AS5. AS2, AS3 and AS4 are the most similar in construction and contain three layers of the same materials, but in different thicknesses.
- The top layer of AS2, AS3 and AS4 is a comfort layer of Amerisleep’s Bio-Pur memory foam, that is designed to ensure cool sleeping. This layer is thinnest in the firmer AS2 model, and thickest in the softer AS4 model.
- AS1 and AS5 also use Bio-Pur as a top layer, but differ in their middle layer construction. AS5, for example, has under its Bio-Pur layer an additional layer of a special foam that makes it softer and that is not included in other models. AS1, in contrast, goes straight from the Bio-Pur comfort layer to a dense base layer.
- The middle layer of AS2, AS3 and AS4 is a supportive transition foam layer. This layer is thickest in AS2 and thinnest in AS4. AS5 also has a layer of the same material.
- AS2, AS3, AS4 and AS5 all have a 7-inch base layer of dense support foam. AS1’s dense base layer is 8 inches thick.

Construction Differences and Notes
- Amerisleep has more firmness options, which are constructed in different ways.
- Nolah is more temperature neutral throughout, though Amerisleep also uses special materials to ensure you stay cool.
- Amerisleep tries to build more environmentally friendly mattresses by using plant-based materials to cut down on the company’s use of petroleum-based materials.
- I expect the durability of the Nolah and the different Amerisleep mattresses to be about the same.
Firmness and Feel
Nolah is a soft mattress, while firmness varies by model when it comes to Amerisleep. You can see the Nolah is a little bit faster to respond to pressure than the Amerisleep mattresses are.
Motion Transfer
Nolah and Amerisleep mattresses, particularly the softer options of Amerisleep, both isolate motion well and would be good options for couples. However, with its quicksand-y feel and extreme softness, Nolah has an edge and isolates motion particularly well.

Pick Nolah If:
- You change sleep in different positions — While those with an affinity for soft mattresses may be happy with either Nolah or one of the softer Amerisleep options, Nolah is easier to move around in and better for people who frequently change from side to stomach and back positions.
- You want to save money — Nolah’s direct-to-consumer business model and production of a single model of mattresses allows the company to charge lower prices for its mattresses with less compromise on quality. If you’re looking at the softer options of Amerisleep, which are also its more expensive options, definitely consider Nolah as well.
Pick Amerisleep If:
- You’ve had success with memory foam – If memory foam has worked for you in the past, Amerisleep could be a good option for you as it uses the material.
- You want a specific firmness level– Amerisleep has five firmness options, while most online mattresses sellers offer only one or two options. These options also noticeably differ in terms of construction.
Overall
There’s not much comparison between a company with multiple mattresses models, like Amerisleep, to a one-trick pony, like Nolah. However, I hope this post has helped by breaking things down. If you have any specific questions, please ask them in the comments below!
