We ranked the McKinney mattress around 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for average firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests the McKinney is notably firmer-than-average. It layers memory foam over firmer polyfoams to create a sturdy sleep surface.
That said, note that firmness is slightly subjective. Depending on your body weight and personal preferences, you might find that this bed feels a bit firmer or softer.

We found the McKinney mattress to be a good mattress for back sleeping. Its firm feel kept the spine well supported. That being said, some sleepers might feel like it is too firm for this position.
Because the McKinney is on the firmer side, it’s not well suited to side sleeping. We felt pressure around the shoulder and hip. Side sleepers usually want to choose a softer mattress overall.

The McKinney mattress has a firm, balanced foam feel. You shouldn’t sink very far into this mattress, so it’s easy to move around and change positions.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
Average-weight back sleepers should enjoy a balance of comfort and support on the McKinney. Those on the lighter end of this range might think it is a bit firmer, however.
Average-weight side sleepers will almost certainly feel too much pressure in this position and will want to look for a softer mattress for side sleepers.
Average-weight stomach sleepers should experience plenty of spinal support. Their hips shouldn’t be bowing into the mattress whatsoever.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
In general, the McKinney is not a great match for heavyweight sleepers. It’s unlikely to provide adequate support for back and stomach sleepers, and it will feel too firm for heavyweight side sleepers. This bed is mostly designed for kids or guest rooms.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
Lightweight back sleepers should enjoy a blend of pressure relief and spinal support on the McKinney mattress. Lightweight side sleepers might experience too much pressure around the shoulder and hip. This bed should be plenty supportive for lightweight stomach sleepers.

The primary comfort layer on the McKinney consists of 3” of copper-infused memory foam. The memory foam offers a bit of pressure relief, while the copper infusion helps with cooling. Next up there’s a 1” layer of gel memory foam followed by a 1” layer of medium high-density polyfoam. The polyfoam serves as a transition layer between the memory foam comfort layers and the support layer underneath.
Support Layer
The McKinney’s support layer consists of 8” of high-density base foam. This layer offers structure and support for the mattress overall.

Sleeping Hot Or Cold
The McKinney is an all-foam mattress, which means it could trap some heat. That said, it does include several design features to help it sleep a bit cooler, including a cooling cover and gel and copper infusions in the memory foam layers.
Motion Transfer
Based on our tests, the McKinney handles motion transfer very well. The thick memory foam layers absorb movement and help minimize disturbances across the surface of the mattress.
Edge Support
In our experience, the McKinney mattress doesn’t have particularly great edge support. Our larger reviewer didn’t feel very secure while sitting and lying down near its edges. That said, kids and teens should probably feel fine.
Durability
The McKinney is a value mattress, so it’s not the most durable bed around. With proper care, expect it to last for between 5 and 7 years.
Off-Gassing
We did observe some initial off-gassing from the McKinney. Expect this to dissipate within a few days.
Noise
We didn’t notice any real noise while moving around on this mattress. Thanks to its foam core (as opposed to coils), it should remain noise-free.
Sex
The McKinney is a firmer mattress with some bounce, so it should be easy enough for sexual partners to change positions. Partners shouldn’t feel trapped in this mattress.

The McKinney is not zoned.

The McKinney and the Purple feature very different constructions. The Country Living mattress is an all-foam bed that layers memory foam over high-density polyfoam. The Purple uses a unique gel grid to create a one-of-a-kind construction and a temperature-neutral sleep surface.
