Weighted blankets are great for helping us relax while we use them, but more often than not, they tend to add some extra warmth. That extra heat leads hot sleepers like myself to kick them off, which means we won’t reap all those great relaxation benefits. One way to get that weighted blanket feel and not trap heat, however, is to look at chunky-knit weighted blankets.

Brooklyn Bedding realized the benefits of promoting airflow while using weighted blankets and created its chunky knit weighted blanket. So, in my unbiased review, I go over everything you’ll need to know if this is what you’re looking for. I cover my testing experience, price, weight options and more, so keep reading.

30-60 Min Nap With the Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket

As a hot sleeper, weighted blankets are usually something I only reach for during the wintertime. But I do enjoy using chunky knit blankets because they are much better for me, as it’s pretty impossible for these types of blankets to trap heat.

Right off the bat, I knew using the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket was going to be much more enjoyable than the average weighted blanket. At the time of writing this review, fall is just a couple weeks away, but in Texas that still means dealing with 90+ degree weather outside. But for me, using a chunky weighted blanket is  perfect for this time of year.

A man sleeps with the Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket.

I will say, when I realized this blanket was only a throw-size blanket, and that was the only size offered, I was a little disappointed. It definitely wasn’t able to cover the queen-size mattress I was testing this blanket out on, and I had to stretch it a bit to make sure it covered me completely.

The blanket did feel a bit stiff right out of the packaging, but with use and washing, I imagine that’ll loosen up and feel much softer. I also didn’t feel hot at all because of the loops in the design. Every time I moved, they were able to open up and let air flow through, so overheating was a non-issue for me.

How Much Does the Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket Weigh?

Brooklyn Bedding offers its weighted blanket in 10 or 15 lb weight options. For this review, I got the 15 lb blanket. I should note, both weight options are only the size of your average throw blanket. I’m pointing this out because some like to use weighted blankets all night on their bed while they sleep. So if you have a queen or a king-size mattress, this blanket won’t fill up the space.

The two weight options are also on the lighter end of the weighted blanket spectrum. If you’re not sure what weight option is best for you, the general rule of thumb is to take 10% of your body weight (or divide your weight by 10) and that’ll give you your ideal weight option, give or take a pound or two.

Lightweight adults or even some teenagers should find ample weight from the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket. But some average and heavyweight individuals who prefer to use heavier weighted blankets should look at our list of the best weighted blankets. There, we list some blankets that are not only heavier than 15 lb, but come in bigger sizes as well.

How Does the Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket Feel?

Truth be told, the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket felt more like a thick, heavy blanket for me rather than a full weighted blanket. I think this is mostly because I’m a bigger guy, and a 15 lb throw blanket won’t feel that heavy on me. So, I didn’t really get that hugging sensation weighted blankets are known for.

Having said that, I still enjoyed using the blanket, as it’s nice and soft. It gives a cozy feel, but the loops prevent the blanket from trapping heat. Overall, as I mentioned, for me it felt more like a thick blanket. If you weigh about 150 lb or less, or have a teen that wants the benefits of a weighted blanket, this is a good option to look at.

Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket Performance

Let’s go over some other important considerations for the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Because of the chunky knit design, this blanket will not trap heat. The loops can open up and let air flow through. This blanket still provides a good cozy feeling, but if you tend to run hot like I do, overheating will not be an issue here.

Care Instructions

Brooklyn Bedding mentions on its website that the blanket is fully machine-washable. However, the blanket will come with instructions saying it’s spot clean only. After chatting with customer support, it was made clear that the blanket comes with spot clean only instructions because of its weight.

Some weighted blankets can ruin machines because of how heavy they are. So, I would recommend making sure your washing machine can handle a 10 or 15 lb blanket before machine-washing. If it can’t, it’s best to stick to spot cleaning.

If you do have a heavy duty washing machine, Brooklyn Bedding recommends washing it on a gentle cycle in cold water with a mild detergent. As for drying, it’s recommended to let it air dry.

Allergies/Allergens?

The Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket is not listed as a hypoallergenic product. The polyester fabric used shouldn’t trap or attract allergens, however. And it is possible to machine-wash this weighted blanket which can help remove any allergens that do land on the blanket.

Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket Construction

The Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket is made up of 100% polyester. The thick yarn used to knit the blanket together is made up of a polyester outer fabric, and inside the fabric is more polyester fluff, which is what gives the blanket its weight. This should feel relatively soft and smooth.

How does Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket Compare To Other Blankets

Chunky knight weighted blankets might not be what you’re looking for in a blanket. Let’s compare the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket to two more traditional blanket styles.

Brooklyn Bedding vs Layla

The biggest difference between the Brooklyn Bedding and Layla blankets will be construction. The Layla weighted blanket is a traditional looking blanket, with two sides to it. The Brooklyn Bedding blanket has a chunky knit design and this makes it perform differently than Layla.

If you’re a hot sleeper, I’d recommend going with the Brooklyn Bedding blanket because it can open up and let some air flow through. But if you’re someone who gets cold quickly, or wants to use weighted blankets for some extra warmth, I’d recommend the Layla blanket. It features two sides with different feels: a cotton side which is soft and smooth and a minky side for a soft yet fuzzy feeling.

Finally, the weight selections and size options will vary between these two blankets. Brooklyn Bedding’s blanket is only offered in 10 or 15 lb, and both will be throw-size. The Layla blanket starts at 15 lb and goes up to 25, and comes in throw, queen or king-size options.

Brooklyn Bedding vs Gravity

If you’re a hot sleeper looking for weighted blankets that won’t make you sweat, then both the Brooklyn Bedding and Gravity cooling weighted blankets are good options. But, again, how these blankets perform and keep you from overheating comes down to the design.

Sleeping with the Gravity Cooling Weighted Blanket

As we know by now, the chunky knit design to the Brooklyn Bedding blanket is what’s going to promote airflow and keep heat at bay. But Gravity’s cooling weighted blanket will do it a little differently. Though this is a traditional blanket design, the outer cover is made with a cool-to-the-touch polyester material that is breathable and has some moisture-wicking properties, which means you won’t feel sweaty.

Gravity is a pretty popular brand for weighted blankets, and as such the brand has a much wider variety of options available for shoppers. Be it color, size or weight options, Gravity’s options are greater than Brooklyn Bedding’s. The Brooklyn Bedding blanket is a throw-size weighted blanket in 10 or 15 lb options. Gravity’s weighted blankets range from 15 to 35 and have a number of color options as well.

Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket FAQs

What if I don’t like my Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket?

You’ll have 30 days to make returns or exchanges on this blanket from the day it arrives on your doorstep. If you decide to return it during this timeframe, Brooklyn Bedding will offer a full refund. If you just need the heavier blanket, you can also make that exchange during this time.

Can I wash the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket?

Yes, but make sure your washing machine is capable of a 10 or 15 lb load. If your machine can handle the weight, just wash it in a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent and you’re good to go. If you’re not sure your machine can handle the weight, it’s best to spot clean.

How long will the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket last?

At least three years with good care. Because this blanket doesn’t have an outer cover and has a knit design, durability might look different from a more traditional weighted blanket that comes with a cover. However, with good care, this blanket should last you several years.
