Douglas Alpine Mattress Overview

Douglas sells three different mattress models: The Douglas Original, the Alpine, and the Summit. The Alpine mattress is more luxurious than the original model, but it doesn’t have the Summit’s advanced features. If you want a high-end mattress, but don’t want to opt for the priciest model, this could be a good choice.

Douglas Alpine Mattress Firmness and Feel

Before we dissect the mattress’s construction, let’s take a moment to investigate its firmness and feel. Both of these elements will help you decide whether the mattress will offer the comfort and support your body needs.

How Firm is the Douglas Alpine?

Mattress Clarity’s firmness scale ranges from 1-10, with 6.5/10 representing the industry standard of medium-firm. The Douglas Alpine feels slightly softer than average, coming in at 6/10. If you crave a plush mattress that can cushion joints, the Douglas Alpine fits the bill.

Sleeping On The Douglas Alpine

Because of its soft feel, The Douglas Alpine works best for side sleepers. In this sleeping position, folks should feel lots of pressure relief along their shoulders and hips. The Douglas Alpine works well for some lightweight back and stomach sleepers, but it’s not ideal for heavier folks.

What Does the Douglas Alpine Feel Like?

The Douglas Alpine has a traditional, slow-moving memory foam feel. When you rest on top of it, you’ll feel yourself gently sinking into the top layer. This offers ample pressure relief, but it may be difficult for some people to move around on top of the mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

The Douglas Alpine is a great choice for average weight side sleepers. The thick, slow-moving foam contours the body and relieves pain along pressure points. Back sleepers who weigh less than 170 lb will feel a good balance of comfort and support on the Douglas, but heavier people may not be able to maintain the proper spinal alignment.

Stomach sleepers who weigh close to 130 lb should get the support they need, but in general, we don’t recommend the Douglas Alpine for average weight stomach sleepers. The mattress isn’t quite firm enough to support the hips, so stomach sleepers will likely feel themselves sinking into the top layer. This can crane the spine out of its natural alignment and cause lower back pain. Take a look at our list of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers for some better options.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavyweight side sleepers who weigh less than 250 lb should get the comfort and support they need, but we don’t recommend the Douglas Alpine for other types of heavyweight sleepers. Larger folks will need a more supportive mattress that can help the spine maintain its natural alignment. Check out our list of the best mattresses for heavy people for some options.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Folks who weigh less than 130 lb should feel comfy in all three sleeping positions. Because smaller folks won’t compress the memory foam layers too much, they may think the mattress feels firmer than other people do.

Douglas Alpine Mattress Construction

Now, let’s see what sets this Douglas mattress apart from the others. Here’s a deep dive into its construction.

LayerDescription
CoverThe Douglas CoolSense cover contains Infinitex™ fibers, which help wick away moisture and keep sleepers cool at night. Best of all, the cover is removable and machine-washable.
Comfort Layer #1The first comfort layer consists of 2.25” of ecoLight® Cooling Gel Foam with Polar® Temperature Balancing. This proprietary material helps sleepers stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Comfort Layer # 2Underneath that, you’ll find a 2.25” layer Premium Elastex® Foam. This material feels a bit more responsive than the top layer and helps prevent sleepers from “bottoming out” on the bed.
Support LayerThe support layer contains 6.5” of Motion Isolation Support Foam. This high-density support layer offers lumbar support and helps eliminate motion transfer.

Mattress Height

The Douglas Alpine mattress is 11” tall.

Douglas Alpine Mattress Performance

We thoroughly tested the Alpine mattress in order to measure its performance features. Keep reading to see how it fares in terms of cooling, motion transfer, edge support, durability, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Douglas Alpine is a great choice for hot sleepers, because the cover helps wick away moisture and the comfort layer contains heat-dissipating gel foam. This mattress shouldn’t sleep as hot as many other all-foam beds.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is an important element to consider if you share a bed with a partner. Beds with poor motion isolation tend to shake whenever one person shifts sleeping positions during the night.

Fortunately, because it’s made entirely out of foam, the Douglas Alpine mattress isolates motion quite well which is great for couples!

Edge Support

Unfortunately, the Douglas Alpine mattress doesn’t have the best edge support. The mattress feels plush and soft, causing people to sink into the top layer whenever they sit or rest close to the edge. This could force couples to sleep closer toward the center of the mattress, so they won’t be able to utilize the full surface area.

Durability

Most all-foam mattresses last 5-7 years, but because of the Douglas Alpine’s proprietary foam and high-density support layer, we expect it to last closer to seven years.

Off-Gassing

When you unbox a new mattress, it’s common to notice a chemical smell. We call this “off-gassing,” and it occurred when we opened the Douglas Alpine. The smell completely faded away after 48 hours, but if you want to accelerate the off-gassing process, place the mattress in a well-ventilated room and turn on an electric fan.

Noise

The Douglas Alpine mattress doesn’t contain coils, so it should remain silent for its entire lifespan.

Sex

Couples looking for the best mattress for sex typically want a bed that’s easy to move around on. The Douglas Alpine mattress feels a bit like quicksand, making it difficult to switch positions on top of it. Take a look at our list of the best innerspring mattresses for some better options.

Common Douglas Alpine Mattress Complaints

The Douglas Alpine mattress has many positive reviews, but some people weren’t fans of the bed’s firmness level and feel. This mattress is a bit softer than average, and it has a slow-moving feel. If you’re looking for a medium-firm mattress with a balanced feel, you may want to look elsewhere.

How Does The Douglas Alpine Compare To Other Mattresses?

With so many different kinds of mattresses, it can be difficult to find the right one. We’ll help make this decision a bit easier by comparing the Douglas Alpine to two other popular Canadian mattresses: The Logan & Cove and Endy.

Douglas Alpine vs Logan & Cove

Though they’re both popular mattresses made in Canada, these two beds have many differences. Most notably: the construction. The Logan & Cove is a hybrid mattress, which means it contains both coils and foam. This makes the mattress feel a bit more supportive and gives it a bouncy and responsive feel.

A woman rests on her side on the Logan and Cove mattress

The Douglas Alpine mattress has a slow-moving feel, and because it’s a bit softer, it works better for side sleepers.
Unlike the Douglas, the Logan & Cove mattress is available in two firmness options: Luxury Firm and Medium Plush. Because it has more bells and whistles, however, it has a higher price tag.

Who Should Get The Douglas Alpine?

  • Side sleepers
  • Fans of a slow-moving feel
  • People who want to save money

Who Should Get The Logan & Cove?

  • People who prefer bouncy mattresses
  • Folks who want to choose between different firmness levels
  • Those who need a more supportive mattress.

Douglas Alpine vs Endy

The Endy mattress is also made entirely out of foam, but it feels a bit more supportive than the Alpine. It has a classic medium firmness level and a balanced feel, making it a better choice for many back sleepers.

Endy Side Sleeping

The Endy mattress doesn’t sleep as cool as the Alpine, so it may not work well for hot sleepers. If you want to save some money, however, opt for the Endy.

Who Should Get The Douglas Alpine Mattress?

  • Fans of soft mattresses that have a slow-moving feel
  • Hot sleepers
  • Side Sleepers

Who Should Get The Endy Mattress?

  • People who want a mattress with a balanced feel
  • People who want to save money
  • Back sleepers
