If someone is a larger person, they might have trouble finding a mattress to meet their needs, because heavier people need much more support than lighter people do. In addition, they need a mattress that won’t sag under their weight after a few months of use.

When I found out that Saatva was releasing a mattress tailored to larger sleepers, I was very excited to try it out. I have been a fan of Saatva’s many other mattresses, so I was interested to see how the Saatva HD would work for me.

This unbiased Saatva HD mattress review will go over everything consumers should know, including a full breakdown of the construction, the pros and cons, breathability, durability, comfort, support, motion isolation, edge support, and much more.

Saatva HD Mattress Firmness and Feel

When reviewing online mattresses, we always spend a lot of time investigating firmness and feel. That way, we can help you decide if it’s the right bed for you!

How Firm is the Saatva HD?

On our firmness scale, the Saatva HD is an 8/10, or firmer than average. Its high-quality coils are more supportive than what you’ll find in most mattresses, and they’re firmer toward the center of the mattress. This promotes proper lumbar support, which makes the mattress a supportive option for heavier people.

Sleeping On The Saatva HD

While lying on my back, the Saatva HD is a nice match for me. I feel that extra lumbar support from the coils and latex layer. My hips also press in just the right amount for this position.

A man sleeps on his side.

When I move to my side, I am feeling some pressure on my shoulders and hips. Still, I feel some decent pressure relief, and I believe that larger people should feel even better pressure relief.

On my stomach, I feel great support with the Saatva HD. My hips don’t sink in whatsoever, and I feel properly aligned.

What Does the Saatva HD Feel Like?

The Saatva HD has a firm, hybrid feel. You get some soft give from the pillow-top, but then you have some very supportive layers beneath that.

The latex and coils also give the mattress some bounce, so it shouldn’t be difficult to move around on the mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs

Because the Saatva HD was created specifically for heavier people, average weight sleepers may find the bed feels too firm. It’s not the best match for average weight back sleepers. While side sleeping, many people in this category may feel pressure build up around their shoulders and hips. Average weight stomach sleepers, however, should feel supported and comfortable on the Saatva HD. The bed’s firmness level should keep hips in alignment throughout the night.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs

For heavier back sleepers, the Saatva HD is a great choice. The bed provides additional lumbar support and allows hips to sink in just a bit. Heavyweight side sleepers should feel some great pressure relief on the Saatva HD, and stomach sleepers should feel a good deal of support under their hips. This is part of what makes it one of the best mattresses for heavy people.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs

Unless they’re fans of firm mattresses, lightweight people probably won’t like the Saatva HD. Most likely, this mattress will feel too firm for back sleeping. While side sleeping, lighter people may feel some significant pressure on their joints. The Saatva HD may be a better fit for stomach sleepers. But generally, people in this category will have better luck with the original Saatva mattress.

Saatva HD Mattress Construction

Now, let’s see what’s inside each layer of the Saatva HD.

Cover

The cover is breathable and woven with organic cotton to add softness and pressure relief. It’s tufted and quilted with comfort foam to give added padding to the mattress. It also features Guardin, an antimicrobial fabric treatment.

Comfort Layers

The first comfort layer consists of zoned Talalay latex foam, which is also ventilated for breathability. The Talalay latex features five zones, so the mattress varies in firmness across this layer.

Then there is a layer of memory foam to provide pressure relief and great body contouring.

Support Layer

This is followed by a layer of support foam, which acts as a buffer between the comfort layers and support coils.

Finally, there are 12.5 gauge tempered steel coils, which are highly supportive, durable, and breathable. The coils are firmer toward the center of the mattress to ensure proper lumbar support, which makes the mattress a supportive option for heavier people. A foam encasement surrounds the coils to provide added edge support.

Mattress Height

The Saatva HD mattress is 15.5″ tall.

Saatva HD Mattress Performance

Now, let’s see how well the Saatva HD performs. We’ll take a close look at its cooling features, motion transfer, edge support, durability, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The mattress should be quite breathable. The latex is ventilated to allow for airflow, and the coils also promote airflow throughout the mattress. In addition, latex is naturally cooling, so all being said people shouldn’t be sleeping hot on the Saatva HD.

Motion Transfer

If you sleep with a partner, it’s worth thinking about how well your mattress handles motion transfer. If you or your partner move around, will that movement transfer across the mattress or not?

To test out the motion isolation of the Saatva HD, I placed a glass of water on top of the mattress. I pressed into the other areas of the mattress, and I did see some disturbance in the water.

While there is latex near the top of the mattress, there is also a layer of memory foam beneath that. Latex isn’t always the best when it comes to motion transfer, but the memory foam is probably absorbing some motion.

If someone is looking for the best mattress for couples, it is worth noting that they could feel some of their partner’s movements on their side of the mattress.

Edge Support

If you want a mattress for couples, you should also think about edge support. If you sit or lie down near the edge of your mattress, will you be secure or will you feel like you’re going to fall off?

While sitting near the edge of the Saatva HD, I feel very secure. The coils and foam encasement make it so the mattress barely collapses when I am sitting. Also, when I lie down near the edge, I don’t feel like I am going to roll off the Saatva HD.

Overall, the Saatva HD has excellent edge support, as evidenced by the photo below.

A man sits on the edge of his mattress.

Durability

The Saatva does cost a bit up front, but it’s a very durable, luxury mattress. It features some high-quality materials that should stand up to years of use. It should be a longer-lasting mattress that is well worth the investment.

Off-Gassing

When unboxing a new mattress, it’s common to notice some off-gassing, but the Saatva HD doesn’t arrive compressed in a box. This means there will be no off-gassing. I didn’t notice any smell when I took the Saatva out of the packaging it came in.

Noise

We did not notice any noise when testing the Saatva HD. It’s possible the coils could squeak with time, but we do not anticipate this becoming a noisy mattress.

Sex

People looking for a good mattress for sex usually want something that’s responsive and easy to move around on. The Saatva HD’s durable coils give the mattress a good bounce, so this should be a good mattress for sex.

Company Policies

Before investing in a new mattress, it’s always a good idea to read the fine print. Below, we’ve outlined Saatva’s warranty information, sleep trial, and return policy.

Warranty Info

Saatva HD is backed by a lifetime-year warranty.

Sleep Trial

Saatva offers a 365-night sleep trial period.

Return Policy

If you aren’t happy with your Saatva HD mattress during the 365-night sleep trial, you can return it and receive a full refund. Saatva does charge a $99 transportation fee upon mattress pickup.

Common Saatva Mattress Complaints

Though there are tons of positive Saatva mattress reviews, we occasionally come across some not-so-favorable reports. Most of the time, customers are complaining about Saatva’s return policy. If you wish to return your Saatva mattress, you will have to pay a $99 transportation fee. This disclaimer is clearly stated on their website, and we always recommend people read the find print before purchasing a new mattress.

Other people have complained about the Saatva HD’s firmness level. Because this bed is designed to support heavier people, it won’t feel comfortable for lighter individuals. People who weigh less than 230lbs will prefer the classic Saatva mattress or Saatva Latex Hybrid.

How Does the Saatva HD Compare to Other Mattresses?

When shopping for a new mattress, it’s always a good idea to check out several brands. Let’s see how the Saatva HD compares to other popular beds on the market!

For more information on how Saatva HD stacks up to others, make sure to check out our mattress comparison page to compare Saatva HD to other popular mattresses like Helix NightfallNew Purple, and Titan.

Saatva HD vs. Original Saatva

Though they’re made by the same company, the Saatva HD and Original Saatva have many construction differences. Most notably, the Original Saatva has two sets of steel coils, but the Saatva HD only has one. Also, Saatva HD contains a zoned latex layer, while the Original Saatva does not.

Saatva Mattress Review

With the original Saatva people can choose from three firmness options. Consumers cannot choose their firmness with the Saatva HD. Overall, the Saatva HD should be a much more supportive mattress than the original Saatva. It is designed to support much heavier weights than the original Saatva is.

Who Should Get the Saatva HD?

  • Heavier people
  • Stomach sleepers who prefer a firm mattress

Who Should Get the Original Saatva?

  • Average weight sleepers

Saatva HD vs. Big Fig

The Saatva HD and Big Fig mattresses were both designed specifically for heavier people, but they have several notable differences. Although they’re both durable beds, the Saatva HD is higher-end and more luxurious. The Saatva HD has more of a pillow top feel, and it costs more than the Big Fig.

Both mattresses are on the firmer side, earning a 8/10 on our scale. They also feature several cooling features to help dissipate heat. Side sleepers may prefer the pressure relief on the Saatva HD, bit the Big Fig is better at isolating motion.

Who Should Get the Saatva HD?

  • Those who want a more luxurious mattress
  • Heavier side sleepers

Who Should Get the Big Fig?

  • Those who want to save money
  • Heavier back sleepers
