Novosbed Mattress Firmness and Feel

Before we investigate The Novosbed’s proprietary materials, let’s examine its firmness and feel. This will help you quickly determine whether it’s the right mattress for you.

How Firm is the Novosbed?

The Novosbed is available in soft, medium, and firm, but we specifically tested the medium model for this review. Like its name suggests, this option has a classic medium-firm feel. It comes in at 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, which is also the industry standard for medium-firm beds.

Choose Soft If:Choose Medium If:Choose Firm If:
You’re a side sleeper who needs lots of body contouringYou are an average weight back or side sleeperYou’re a stomach sleeper or heavier person

Not sure which model you need? Don’t stress. We’ll break down the best firmness options for different types of sleepers below. But even if you pick the wrong one, Novosbed’s Perfect Firmness Guarantee ensures you’ll get the comfort and support you need. All you need to do is contact a Novosbed representative, and they will send you a Comfort+ layer that will soften or firm up your current mattress.

Sleeping On The Novosbed

The medium Novosbed works well for most back and side sleepers. Lightweight stomach sleepers may get the hip support they need on this model, but heavier people may feel their backs craning out of alignment. If you tend to rest on your stomach, opt for the firm model.

What Does the Novosbed Feel Like?

The Novosbed has a balanced feel. The high-density foam layers gently cushion joints, but sleepers shouldn’t feel like they’re “sinking inside” the mattress. If you’re looking for a mattress with more of a “quicksand” sort of quality, check out Puffy or Nolah. Prefer bouncy and responsive beds? The Saatva or WinkBed might be best for you.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Most average weight sleepers will prefer the medium Novosbed. This option offers plenty of lumbar support for back sleepers and ample pressure relief for side sleepers. It’s supportive enough for stomach sleepers who weigh less than 150 lb, but heavier stomach sleepers may prefer the firm model.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavyweight back and stomach sleepers will prefer the firm model because it offers the most support. Some heavyweight side sleepers will get the pressure relief and lumbar support they need on the medium model, but those who weigh more than 250 lb run the risk of “bottoming out.”

If you weigh more than 300 lb, you might want to consider getting one of the best mattresses for heavy people.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Because lightweight people won’t compress the Novosbed’s comfort layer too much, they may think this mattress feels firmer than average and heavyweight sleepers do. For that reason, we suggest lightweight people opt for the soft model. It should offer optimal comfort and support in all sleeping positions!

Novosbed Mattress Construction

What makes this mattress so special? To find out, we’ll need to peel back the covers and check out its construction.

LayerDescription
CoverThe Novosbed has a Ultra-Soft Stretch-Knit Top Cover that feels plush and luxurious. Best of all, it’s removable and machine-washable!

Underneath the top cover sits a Two-Way Stretch Elastic Core Cover, which surrounds and protects the foam layers underneath.

Comfort Layer #1The comfort layer contains Novosbed’s high-density foam. Not only is this material durable – it’s also cooling! The open-cell construction promotes airflow and helps dissipate body heat.

If you find your mattress isn’t quite soft or firm enough, you can place a layer of Comfort+ foam underneath the top cover. A Novosbed representative will help you determine which type of Comfort+ foam is best for your sleep needs.

Support Layer #1At the bottom, you’ll find a layer of Premium support foam. This durable material offers the lumbar support sleepers need in order to maintain the proper spinal alignment.

The Novosbed mattress is 11” tall.

Novosbed Mattress Performance

We can’t stop here! It’s also important to investigate the Novosbed’s performance features. We put this mattress through a number of tests to determine its cooling capabilities, motion isolation, edge support, durability, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

All-foam mattresses tend to trap body heat, but thanks to Novosbed’s open-cell foam, that won’t be a huge problem. Most sleepers should feel cool and comfy at night, but if you already run particularly hot, you may want to look for one of the best cooling mattresses. The Novosbed does help dissipate body heat, but it’s not as effective as a hybrid or innerspring mattress.

Motion Transfer

It’s super important to pay attention to your mattress’s motion transfer if you share a bed with a partner. If your bed doesn’t isolate movement well, you might wake up when your loved one shifts sleeping positions during the night.

Fortunately, the Novosbed’s high-density foam absorbs movement and prevents it from spreading throughout the mattress.

Edge Support

Edge support also plays a large role in how comfortable couples will feel at night. Beds with poor edge support force sleepers to rest closer toward the center of the mattress, and that can make people feel hot and cramped.

Unfortunately, the Novosbed doesn’t have the best edge support. When we sat along the side of the bed, we felt it cave in beneath us. We didn’t feel like we would roll off the mattress, but it may not work well for couples who sleep in a small bed. Take a look at our list of the best mattresses for couples for some more options.

Durability

The Novosbed contains high-quality materials, so we expect it to last at least seven years. This is a typical lifespan for a memory foam mattress, but if you want a bed that lasts a bit longer, you may want to consider getting one of the best hybrid mattresses.

Off-Gassing

It’s common to notice a slight chemical smell after opening a new bed-in-a-box mattress. In the mattress industry, we call this “off-gassing,” and it occurred with the Novosbed. After 48 hours, however, the smell disappeared.

Noise

The Novosbed is completely silent, and because it doesn’t contain coils, we don’t expect it to create noise as time goes on.

Sex

People looking for one of the best mattresses for sex often want beds that feel bouncy and are easy to move around on. If that’s a high priority for you, the Novosbed may not be a great choice. This all-foam bed won’t make you feel “stuck” inside the layers, but it’s not super easy to move around on top of it.

Company Policies

Don’t click ‘add to cart’ just yet! It’s also important to read the company policies before making a purchase.

Warranty Info

The Novosbed mattress is backed by a 15-year warranty.

Sleep Trial

The sleep trial lasts 120 nights.

Return Policy

If you aren’t happy with your purchase, you can issue a refund – as long as it’s during the initial sleep trial period.

How Does The Novosbed Compare To Other Mattresses?

We know how hard it can be to find the perfect mattress. That’s why we compared the Novosbed to two other popular mattresses: the TEMPUR-Cloud and Douglas Alpine.

Novosbed vs TEMPUR-Cloud

The TEMPUR-Cloud, made by TEMPUR-pedic, has a traditional memory foam feel that people love to sink into. It’s not quite as responsive as the Novosbed, so it works particularly well for side sleepers.

A man sleeps on his side on the Tempur-Cloud

The TEMPUR-Cloud does a great job of alleviating pain along pressure points, but it sleeps hotter than the Novosbed. Its luxurious feel makes some people feel like they’re resting at a 5-star hotel, but its high price point could deter some people.

Novosbed vs Douglas Alpine

The Douglas Alpine mattress has a soft feel that’s great for side sleepers. It has three comfort layers that gently hug the body, and the top layer contains cooling gel. This, paired with Douglas’s Polar Active temperature balancing technology, makes it a better choice for hot sleepers.

It’s important to note that the Douglas mattress is only available in Canada, while the Novosbed ships to both the United States and Canada.
