If you’ve spent any time researching online mattresses, you have undoubtedly come across Casper. This brand was at the forefront of the bed-in-a-box revolution and it still offers numerous high-quality models.

But, I’d like to go back to where it all started with the brand’s flagship model. Is it actually comfortable, and does it still deserve its popularity? In my Casper mattress review, I discuss its construction, my experience with the bed and who it will be the best fit for.

Casper Original Mattress Video Review

Casper Mattress Review: General Overview

While the Casper brand now sells a slew of different models, it all began with the Casper Original mattress. It was one of the first online mattresses to feature a zoned construction, offering support and comfort for multiple sleeping positions. In addition, this design feature is meant to promote good spinal alignment, preventing and easing back pain.

In my experience, the Casper Original is an online mattress with a lot to offer. However, it is not going to be the best mattress for every type of sleeper.

Pros of the Casper Mattress

  • It is an excellent mattress for back sleepers. Its medium firmness and Zoned Support system kept my spine perfectly aligned when I was back sleeping, while the top foam layers provided a bit of contouring.
  • Lightweight and medium weight combination sleepers are going to love the Casper mattress. The Zoned Support system makes the mattress feel firmer or softer depending on your sleeping position. If you roll around and change positions at night, the Casper has what you’re looking for.
  • Its balanced foam feel makes it easy to move around at night. Those who have dealt with feeling “stuck” in their mattress won’t have that issue on the Casper. It is responsive and allows you to change positions with ease.

Cons of the Casper Mattress

  • Heavier side sleepers won’t get the pressure relief they need on the Casper. If you weigh over 230 lb, you could press further into the mattress and feel some pressure on your shoulders and hips. This will be very uncomfortable and may cause joint pain over time.
  • It doesn’t have a slow-moving memory foam feel. If you like to lie down on your mattress and slowly sink in, you’re not going to get this feeling here.
  • People who just sleep on their stomachs will want a firmer mattress overall. While the bed is good for combo sleepers, if you only sleep on your stomach, a firmer mattress will provide even more support under your hips.

Casper Mattress Firmness and Feel

One of the main things that mattress shoppers should keep in mind is the firmness and feel they are looking for. Let’s talk about just how firm the Casper mattress is and how this will make it feel for different types of sleepers.

How Firm Is the Casper Mattress?

The Casper feels like a 7/10 on our firmness scale, which is just a tad firmer than average. However, the firmness level will depend on the size of the person who is sleeping on it. A larger person might press further into the mattress, so they could feel like the Casper is even firmer; a lighter person might not press in so far and could feel like the Casper mattress is softer.

The zoned support system also plays a role in the mattress’s firmness level. Because the center of the transition layer is more supportive than the rest of the mattress, the Casper feels firmer while back and stomach sleeping.

Sleeping on the Casper

When I slept on my back, the Casper mattress felt like a great match. My hips sank into the AirScape foam at the top, but the zoned support system offered the lumbar support I needed.

Casper Mattress - Side Sleeping

The Casper also felt great whenever I slept on my side. The foam felt soft under my shoulders and offered the pressure relief I needed. When I slept on my stomach, I felt a decent amount of support under my hips from the zoned design. But even so, it wasn’t quite firm enough to keep my spine in the proper alignment. I recommend looking for one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers if this is your preferred sleeping position.

What Does the Casper Feel Like?

Overall, the Casper has a balanced foam feel. This means the top layers have a responsive feel but still offer plenty of pressure relief. I am able to easily move around on top of the mattress without feeling stuck inside the layers.

Sleeper Weight Back SleepersSide SleepersStomach Sleepers
Lightweight (Under 130 lb)Excellent Excellent Good
Average (130 – 230 lb)Excellent Good Fair
Heavyweight (Over 230 lb)GoodBadBad

Is the Casper Mattress Good for Lightweight People (Under 130 lb)?

  • Lightweight sleepers will find a great balance of comfort and support while back sleeping.
  • Side sleepers in this weight range will enjoy the extra pressure relief the Zoned Support system offers.
  • Stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 lb will get plenty of support under their hips.

Is the Casper Mattress Good for Average Weight People (130 – 230 lb)?

  • Back sleepers will feel their hips sink in the right amount while the Zoned Support provides additional lumbar support.
  • Side sleepers who weigh less than 230 lb will get enough pressure relief and will find it to be one of the best mattresses for neck and shoulder pain.
  • Stomach sleepers will get decent support on this mattress, but primary stomach sleepers might want to opt for something firmer.

Is the Casper Mattress Good for Heavyweight People (Over 230 lb)?

  • The Casper will be supportive enough if you weigh closer to 230 lb, but much heavier back sleepers will need more support.
  • Side sleepers will press too far into the mattress and will feel serious pressure on their shoulders and hips.
  • Stomach sleepers will definitely need more support and should check out my best mattresses for heavy people for some ideas.

Casper Mattress Construction

Now, let’s look closely at the Casper mattress’s layout. Here’s what you’ll find in each layer:

Cover

The Casper’s knit cover is thin and soft. It is meant to promote airflow through the top of the mattress and to not interfere the comfort of the top foam layers.

Comfort Layers

The top layer contains AirScape foam, a proprietary material that feels soft and responsive. It is also open-celled and ventilated, which helps sleepers stay cool at night.

A cross section shot of the Casper Original's construction

Below that sits Casper’s Zoned Support layer, a section of memory foam that feels firmer toward the center of the mattress and softer toward the head and foot. As I said above, this is meant to provide additional lumbar support and to promote a neutral spinal alignment.

Support Layer

The support layer consists of a thick, high-density polyfoam. It is designed to prevent sagging in the mattress and to give you the support you need.

Mattress Height

The Casper is 11″ tall, which is an average height for an all-foam mattress.

Casper Mattress Performance

Just how well does the Casper mattress perform when it comes to cooling, motion transfer and edge support? Keep reading to find out.

Cooling

Because the Casper is made entirely out of foam, it was not as cooling as latex, hybrid or innerspring mattresses. That said, it does have many impressive cooling features that help dissipate heat: The top cover is breathable, and the AirScape foam is open-celled and ventilated for enhanced breathability and airflow.

If you’re a particularly hot sleeper, you may want to consider getting the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow mattress.

Motion Transfer

The Casper mattress isolated motion well, which is great for couples. If your partner switches sleeping positions during the night, the thick foams should absorb that movement and keep it isolated to one side of the bed.

Edge Support

The Casper mattress also had excellent edge support. It didn’t collapse too much when I sat near the edge of the mattress, and I didn’t feel like I would roll off the side when I slept near the edge.

Casper Mattress - Edge Support

Durability

The Casper contains high-quality comfort layers and has a durable base layer. Overall, I expect the Casper mattress to last seven to 10 years, which is about three years longer than an average all-foam bed.

Off-gassing

When I first unboxed the Casper mattress, there was a slight chemical smell. This is typical for bed-in-a-box mattresses, but after 48 hours, the smell completely faded away.

Noise

Because the Casper is an all-foam mattress, I did not hear any noise when I moved around or changed positions at night. Noise is much more common with hybrid and innerspring mattresses.

Sex

Mattresses that feel responsive and bouncy are usually better for sex because they make it very easy to move around. Because the Casper mattress has more of a balanced foam feel, sexual partners should have no issues repositioning. In fact, it’s one of the best mattresses for sex.

Casper Company Policies

Thinking about buying the Casper Original mattress? Make sure you understand the Casper’s policies before making a final decision.

Warranty

You will feel protected when purchasing the Casper Original mattress thanks to the 10-year warranty. This covers any manufacturing defects that cause the foam to crack or split. Also, if an indentation deeper than one inch forms, this is covered as well. However, normal wear and tear and softening are not covered by the warranty.

Sleep Trial

Are you worried you won’t love the mattress? Fear no more. The Casper Original mattress comes with a 100-night risk-free trial. The brand asks that you try the mattress for 30 nights and, if it’s not a good fit, Casper will arrange for someone to pick up and donate your mattress.

Return Policy

If you ultimately decide that the Casper Original mattress isn’t the best fit, you can return the mattress for a full refund. Again, you can only do this during 30 and 100-night mark.

Common Casper Complaints

As I scrolled through the Casper Original mattress customer reviews, I noticed complaints regarding customer service and misunderstanding of company policies. Similar to any investment purchase, it’s imperative to carefully review the fine print before buying a mattress. Make sure to review our suggestions for better understanding a mattress warranty before making your final purchase decision.

The Casper and the Purple are two of the most popular bed-in-a-box mattresses on the market, but they have very different constructions. The Casper is an all-foam mattress with zoned support, while the Purple contains the company’s proprietary gel hex grid.

Generally, the Purple mattress feels firmer than the Casper, but this greatly depends on the weight of the sleeper. Larger people might feel the Purple is softer and the Casper is firmer.

These two mattresses have similar price points, and they both work well for combination sleepers. Ultimately, the choice boils down to what you want your mattress to feel like. The Casper has a balanced foam feel, while the Purple feels squishy and firm.

Both Nectar and Casper are all-foam mattresses with an affordable price tag and quality materials. They have a similar construction, though the mattresses feel quite different. The Nectar mattress has a slow-moving memory foam feel, while the Casper feels more responsive.

Overall, the Casper works better for side sleepers because the top layers conform to the body and help alleviate shoulder pain. The Nectar mattress is better for stomach and back sleepers because it is firmer.

The Takeaway

The Casper’s Zoned Support makes it an ideal choice for average weight back sleepers, combo sleepers and fans of a responsive foam feel. However, heavier side sleepers, fans of a memory foam feel and strict stomach sleepers will want to look elsewhere.
