Brooklinen Down Comforter Review – True Luxury?

We receive free products to review and participate in affiliate programs. See our disclosure page for more information.

Brooklinen is a producer of some very fine linens and bedding. I have personally reviewed a few of their items, so I was excited to try out their down comforter.

The Brooklinen comes in three models: Lightweight, All-Season, and Ultra-Warm. For this Brooklinen Down Comforter review, I received the All-Season Down Comforter, which is designed to be fluffier and warmer than the Lightweight model, but not as warm as the Ultra-Warm.

Brooklinen is known for their luxurious bedding so, to find out if this is true luxury, read on!

Brooklinen Down Comforter Video Review

Take a look at this comforter in action with our Brooklinen Down Comforter video review!

Brooklinen Down Comforter Materials

Comforters are more than just a big blanket you use to keep you warm. Let’s see what goes into the Brooklinen Down Comforter to help you stay nice and cozy underneath.

Cover

On the outside of this comforter, you’ll find a 400 thread count cotton sateen shell. Sateen just refers to the way the cotton threads are woven, and it’ll leave this shell feeling rather soft and satin-like.

RELATED: Percale vs Sateen Sheets

This comforter also features a baffle box construction. A baffle box design means that the down inside should stay evenly distributed throughout the comforter, and the down will be able to expand.

And in the corners, you’ll find loops to attach an outer duvet cover if you choose!

Fill

On the inside, you’ll find high-quality down clusters. Because this is a down comforter, the fill is down feathers. These feathers are responsibly sourced from Hutterite farms in Canada.

These farms never engage in live plucking, and they wash the down clusters before use.

Brooklinen Down Comforter Review

Typically, comforters have something called fill power. This term refers to how much loft an ounce of down can fill up space. The Brooklinen comforter has a 700 fill power, which is on the higher end.

Warmth

With three warmth levels available, the Brooklinen Down Comforter can meet a lot of needs.

But let’s focus on the all-season model, which is what I received. This version of the comforter doesn’t have a ton of warmth to it. This is great if you love to have a thicker blanket on you, but if you’re looking for warmth, go with the ultra-warm option.

Or if you love the year-round use for this comforter, you could always add a thick duvet cover on the outside to add some warmth.

Allergies/Allergens?

Products made with down are sometimes known for trapping allergens in your sleep environment.

However, Brooklinen has made its down comforter completely hypoallergenic. And the comforter is treated with ultra-fresh antimicrobials. If you suffer from allergies, and love the feel of down, this could be a great option for you!

Sleeping With the Brooklinen Down Comforter

The Brooklinen all season down comforter has a very breathable cotton shell on the outside. Because of this, and the fact that we received the all-season model, sleeping with it felt very comfortable.

Brooklinen Down Comforter - Breathable Down Comforter

Hot sleepers should really enjoy the all-season and lightweight model. The feathers also allow for air to easily flow through the comforter. Now, I will say, I think the all-season might not be the best pick for people who get cold quickly or for those cold winter months.

The all-season model isn’t the thickest comforter I’ve tested. And because of this, it might be better to go with the ultra-warm option if you’re looking for something to keep you cozy and warm.

Overall, if you’re a fan of using a comforter over sheets, or if you live in warmer climates like me, this comforter is a great option.

Caring for the Brooklinen Comforter

When it comes to washing your Brooklinen Down Comforter, it’s best to follow the instructions Brooklinen provides for you.

To care for your Brooklinen comforter, the company recommends that you spot clean only. If the comforter is particularly dirty or has something that requires more than spot cleaning, you will need to dry clean it.

Do not use bleach, and do not iron this comforter. It could ruin the down within. To make sure that your comforter stays cleaner for longer, use a duvet cover that can be machine washed.

How does the Brooklinen Compare to Other Comforters?

With so many models available, Brooklinen has something for everyone. However, it’s always a good idea to keep your options open. Let’s compare the Brooklinen down comforter to a couple other popular comforters.

Brooklinen vs Buffy

If you’re looking for a down alternative comforter that’s also eco-friendly, then the Buffy Cloud is a good option to consider.

Unlike the Brooklinen, this comforter has a eucalyptus outer shell. This fabric is known for its moisture-wicking properties, so you shouldn’t feel too hot and sweaty underneath this comforter.

Buffy Comforter

It also has a sewn-through construction rather than a baffle-box like the Brooklinen. Because the fill is a recycled material, it doesn’t need to expand like the down found in the Brooklinen comforter.

Speaking of the fill, Buffy’s is a down alternative fill that is made of recycled materials and designed to be temperature regulating. If you prefer down alternative comforters, this is one to consider.

Unlike the Brooklinen though, the Buffy only comes in one warmth option, and it is a more lightweight comforter. And finally, in terms of price, the Buffy comforter is more affordable.

Who Should Get the Brooklinen Down Comforter?

  • Fans of down comforters
  • People looking for multiple warmth options

Brooklinen vs Cozy Earth

But what if you’re in the market for luxury? Both Brooklinen and Cozy Earth are known for their sheet sets, but these two companies do have some luxe comforters available.

Whether you love bamboo or silk, Cozy Earth’s comforter exudes luxury. It features a bamboo shell on the outside, but you have the option to pick a down alternative bamboo or a silk inner fill. Brooklinen’s down fill is also high-quality and responsibly sourced.

Cozy Earth Comforter - A man pinches the fabric on the comforter.

The Cozy Earth comforter has two warmth options to pick from, while Brooklinen has three. But I will say, both are fairly lightweight, but if you’re looking for fluff, the Brooklinen could be the better option.

Neither comforter is marketed as machine washable, but if you can’t take the Cozy Earth to the dry cleaners, you can put it in your washer on a rinse cycle.

Both comforters are around the same price point — on the more luxury end of the scale, but you get what you pay for!

Who Should Get the Brooklinen Down Comforter?

  • Fans of bamboo comforters
  • Anyone looking for a down alternative comforter

FAQs

Still have any questions about the Brooklinen Down Comforter? Here are some of the most frequently asked questions.

Can You Wash a Brooklinen Down Comforter?

Unfortunately, you can’t. This comforter is recommended to be spot clean only. If it requires more than just a spot clean, it’s recommended that you take it to the dry cleaners.

Is the Brooklinen Down Comforter Fluffy?

In my experience, the all-season comforter isn’t one of the fluffiest comforters out there. However, if you’re looking for fluff, the ultra-warm option will be filled with more down, giving it a higher fill power.

It’s important to note, however, that the ultra-warm only comes in twin/twin xl and full/queen sizes.

Do I Need a Duvet Cover for my Brooklinen Down Comforter?

You don’t! The outer cover is made from high-quality, long-staple cotton. The comforter can work as is without a cover. However, if you’re looking to keep the comforter clean or extend its life span, it does have corner loops to attach a duvet cover to.
